OBITUARY SEBASTIAN SCHLESAK Peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa on Thursday, January 18, 2007 in his 66th year. Sabastian Schlesak, son of Theresia and the late Johann Schlesak. Beloved husband for 42 years to Helga Schlesak. Devoted father of Robert, Karl (Heidi) and Nathalie. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Alex and Anna Kopacek. Dear brother of Joseph (Elizabeth) and Theresa. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews, and will be fondly remembered for his love and loyalty by all. Mable Isabelle Bandy died on January 20, 2006 at Hastings Centennial Manor in Bancroft. She had been living in the Bancroft area since 1957. She was born in Hudson Township to Arthur Messenger and Myrtle Russ. Mrs. Bandy was a dedicated mother and housewife. She enjoyed knitting, quilting, cooking, baking bread and very much enjoyed being around her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Sam Bandy, daughter Irene, son George and siblings Clarence, Elsie, Arthur, Elmer and Verna. Mrs. Bandy is survived by her children Bill and Louise Bandy of Bancroft and daughter-in-law Vera Bandy of Havelock; grandchildren Brian and Linda, Darlene and Robert, Michael and Tammy, Todd and Debbie, Rob and Patricia, Michelle and Jeremy; nine great-grandchildren; siblings Kay Wilson of Thessalon, Hazel Faulkner of Georgetown, Helen Wallace of Mississauga, Gladys Sherritt of Sudbury and Don Messenger of New Liskeard. Mrs. Bandy was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and the funeral was held at the Baragar Funeral Home on January 23. Mr. Floyd Bruce officiated and cremation took place at Elmwood Crematorium in Belleville.

DERMODY, Howard J. - In loving memory of Howard J. Dermody, 87 years, of Onaping, who passed away Friday, January 19th, 2007 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Center. He was born in Kennedy, Saskatchewan and married Luella Anne (Ranger) in Ottawa in 1947. Howard settled in the Sudbury area in 1948 and he was a well liked long time Onaping resident. A proud Canadian he served overseas during World War II with the Canadian Army in Sicily, Italy and Holland in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #503, Onaping Falls. He was a miner at Falconbridge for 28 years, retiring in 1978. He was a former member of the Elks Lodge. Howard was a Roman Catholic who belonged to St. Bartholomew's Church. He was an avid gardener whose “green thumb“ produced beautiful flowers. The focus of Howard's life was his loving family. Beloved husband of Luella Anne “Lou“ (Ranger) Dermody predeceased 2001. Loving father of Gaye (wife Vicky) of Chelmsford, Garry (wife Sheila) of Cranbrook, B.C., and Glenn predeceased. Cherished grandfather of David (Melissa) Dermody, Patrick Eimer, Christopher Eimer, Jamie Eimer (Susan), Amy Featherling (Dean) and great grandchildren Meghan, Ashley, Kaylie, Layne and Daniel. Dear brother of John (wife Vera predeceased) and predeceased by George, Robert, William, Rose (husband Dan), Ethel, Mary (husband Bill) and Charlotte. STAUFFER, Ernie. April 4, 1930 to January 18, 2007. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather (Dampa Ernie). Ernie passed away at Maison Herron in Dorval on January 18, 2007. He was predeceased by his parents and all twelve sisters and brothers. Ernie is survived by his beloved son Bruce, his wife Lisa and their children Cameron, Bronwyn and Rebecca of Victoria B.C., son Dean and his daughter Emerson of Calgary, Alberta; and his daughter Karen, her husband Mike and their children, Lauren and Katherine of Dorval, Quebec. Ernie will be greatly missed by his many family members and friends and by all those who knew him. Ernie was a very special man with a great sense of humor and a beautiful smile. He was a very generous person and he enjoyed imparting his wisdom with others. He will be remembered for always seeing the positive side of things. Born in Berne Switzerland, Ernie came to Canada at the age of twenty-six and opened Chambly Tool and Heat Treat Corporation. He loved animals, walking in the woods, picking mushrooms and especially gardening. Ernie was particularly proud of his rose garden. OBITUARY ROBERT "PEARSE" HUGHES 1918-2007 Robert "Pearse" Hughes, beloved husband of Betty, of Calgary passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at the age of eighty-eight years. Pearse was born on August 23, 1918 in Vegreville, AB, but spent most of his growing years in Lemberg, SK. After wartime service in the Air Force he attended the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During this time, he met and married Betty Brooks of Abernethy, SK. After graduation, Pearse and Betty moved to Toronto, ON where Pearse pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Toronto. His working career was in the field of aeronautics, beginning with the AVRO Arrow and continuing with TCA/Air Canada in Winnipeg, MB and Montreal, QC. He retired from Air Canada in 1983 after thirty years. His interests were many and varied. Pearse loved photography and woodworking, enjoyed playing baseball and hockey, and latterly, golf and curling. Consistent with his values and his desire to serve, Pearse was always active in his community and his church. In Winnipeg, he coached house league baseball and hockey and was involved with the Air Cadets. Pearse was deeply committed to the United Church of Canada all his life. One of his greatest pleasures was to share the cottage at Falcon Lake, MB with family and friends, where many gatherings were held over fifty years. Besides Betty, his wife of fifty-eight years, Pearse is survived by four children, Ann and Tom (Martha) of Calgary, David of Toronto, and Joan (Gary) of Lausanne, Switzerland; and seven grandchildren, Andrew, Michael, Christopher, Robert, William, Sarah, and Jennifer. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Thomas United Church (100 Hawkwood Boulevard N.W.) on Monday, January 22, 2007 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Deborah Lannon, and Rev. Roslyn Campbell, Presiders. DUNN, Lois Margaret (Kyle). Airdrie, Alberta, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2007 at home with her family. Born November 11, 1939 in Huntingdon, daughter of the late Charles and Amy (Hunter) Kyle. She enjoyed horse back riding, golfing, doing crossword puzzles and was an avid bridge player with her friends in Huntingdon. She loved getting together with her family and friends, both old and new. She and Ken recently traveled Alberta with their RV club. Dearly missed by her beloved husband, Kenneth Dunn, sons Kyle, Airdrie, AB, Paul, Edmonton, AB and daughter Heidi, Carstairs, AB; adored grandchildren, Jessica, Nick, Stephanie, Zack and Baily. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation held by request. A celebration of Lois' life will be held in the spring. Date and time will be announced in the Gleaner. Burial will take place at the Dunn Cemetery in Franklin Centre. OBITUARY DR. LAUDER BRUNTON (Sir Edward Francis Lauder Brunton, Bart) passed away quickly and peacefully January 1, 2007. He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie Lewis, and is survived by his sister Alice Hoskins, his son James (Beverly Freedman), daughter Nancy Willson (Ian) and their children. Dr Brunton was born November 10, 1916 in Montreal. He took his science and medical training at McGill University, before serving with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps from 1943 to 1945. On returning to Canada he married Marjorie Lewis, his life companion and muse. He completed post-graduate medical training in internal medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal and specialty training in Haematology in Salt Lake City Utah. He joined the medical faculty of McGill University and the Haematology staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital where he practiced and taught until 1973 when he retired to Guysborough, Nova Scotia. His retirement marked the start of a second career in community service in health care and education in rural Nova Scotia. His most important contributions were the recruitment and mentoring of excellent physicians, brokering the construction of a joint hospital-nursing home complex and raising the standards of the local hospital so that it was one of the first rural hospitals in Nova Scotia to receive accreditation. He worked tirelessly to improve the school system in Guysborough County. His most important contributions were the reorganization of the Board structure and procedural rules and the recruitment of outstanding individuals including board members, administrators, and teachers to serve the students. He was appointed to the Executive of the Nova Scotia School Boards Association. In matters of healthcare and education he was a volunteer and a leader, but above all a mentor. He was also a passionate art collector who had a fine eye for visual arts. He served on the Board of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and chaired the Acquisitions Committee from 1987-1993. He was an Honorary Governor from 1994 until his death. He donated a major collection of art in honour of his wife Marjorie. Lately he battled courageously with physical disability, but was able to live independently due to the caring and selfless devotion of his staff and second family from the area. OBITUARY R.F. PATRICK CRONIN M.D.C.M., F.R.C.P. Born September 1, 1926 in London, England. Passed away quietly January 13, in Montreux, Switzerland with his beloved wife by his side. The son of doctor-turned-novelist A.J. Cronin and his physician wife, May, Pat was raised in London & Greenwich, Ct. He attended Princeton University and served in World War II with the R.C.A.F. and the British Army. He obtained his medical degree in 1953 from McGill University and his M.Sc. in 1960. In 1954, he married Shirley-Gian Robertson and together they raised three children, David, Diana and Daphne. Pat practiced cardiology and was affiliated with the Montreal General Hospital. He was a member of the McGill Faculty of Medicine from 1959-1984 and served as Associate Dean and Dean of Medicine at McGill from 1969-1977, and continued as Professor of Medicine until 1984. He served as President of the Graduates' Society and served as a Governor of the University. Throughout his career he strove to help developing countries improve their medical and nursing education programs working in conjunction with CIDA in Kenya, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Ethiopia, Pakistan and Tunisia. After leaving Montreal, Pat served as a Medical Consultant to the Aga Khan Health Services and was Director, Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi. Pat was known for his intelligence, his generosity and his wonderfully dry sense of humour. He is survived by his loving wife Sis, son David (Amelie), daughters Diana (Michael Platz) and Daphne; and five grandchildren, Christine, Andrew, Nicholas, Julia and Maximilian. Also by his brothers, Vincent (Chantal) and Andrew (Anne) and their families; and his brother-in-law Ken (Sheila) and their family. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank his caregivers in Florida and Switzerland for their devotion throughout his challenge with Alzheimer's Disease. Funeral services and burial to take place in Montreux, Switzerland. A memorial service will be held in Montreal in the spring. OBITUARY MICHAEL BRIAN 1932-2007 After a full and colourful life, the "inimitable" Michael Brian died peacefully at home with his family around him. Predeceased in May by Mary, his devoted wife of forty years who he lovingly cared for at home throughout her long illness, he leaves a void in the lives of his cherished and grieving daughters, Connie, Imogen (Chris) and Jessica (Kevin) and his force-of-life grandsons Sam, Jacob and Ronan, whom he adored and doted on. Beloved baby brother of Joy (Bill), Denis (Martine), Tony (Carol) and the late Rose Mary (Phil), he will be missed by his large extended family whose lives he filled with stories, laughter and wonder. Born in Orpington, England, Mike studied at Oxford, then came to Canada via California. He settled in Montreal, where he taught English Literature at Concordia University for over thirty-five years. Joycean scholar, professor to hundreds of captivated students, departmental chair, union leader and writer, he left his body to science so that he could keep on teaching. An avid gardener, piano player, gourmet cook, world traveller and dog-lover, Dad was a true original with a renaissance mind full of eclectic knowledge and ideas who loved life, recognized the beauty in everything and believed that nothing was more important than family. He died with no regrets. We are indebted to his very special support team; Dr. Paul Lysy, whose visits and conversations Dad enjoyed so much, the CLSC Metro and Hopital Maisonneuve-Rosemont caregivers, his at-home helpers, Ligaya, Jonathan, Venus, Renato, and his gentleman's gentleman Kevin, all of whom helped us realize Dad's wish to remain at home until he died. Brisson Bélanger, Gertrude 1914-2007 À Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, le 10 janvier 2007, à l’âge de 92 ans, est décédée Mme Gertrude Brisson Bélanger, épouse de feu Yves-Marie Bélanger. MANSELL, Donald Michael 1939-2007. On January 3, 2007 we lost a good man, Donald Michael Mansell (A.K.A. Mon Onlce) died after a brief battle with a head injury, after slipping due to the ice storm on December 22, 2006. He leaves behind his brothers Allan, Gordon and Douglas, his sisters Pearl, Beatrice and Evelyn "We will see ya later, Sam." He will be missed by his very best friend Jean Henderson, her two sons Danny and Gerald, daughter-in-law Andrea and their two sons Brandon and Corey. The burial will be June 1, 2007 at 11 a.m. in the Cote-des-Neiges Cemetery in Montreal. GOSSELIN, Rhéa 1920-2007 À la Résidence Champagnat, le 18 janvier 2007, à l'âge de 86 ans, est décédée madame Rhéa Gosselin, demeurant autrefois à St-Sébastien. Il était l'époux de Jocelyne Roy et fils de feu Yvan Archambault et de feu Yvonne Chauvin.
