BELCHERTOWN - Rodney J. Champoux, 54, of Daniel Shays Highway died June 27 at Mary Lane Hospital in Ware. Born in Northampton, MA on February 13, 1951 he was the son of the late George and Marion (McBride) Champoux. Rodney grew up in Northampton and graduated from Northampton High School. He has lived in Belchertown for the past 16 years and previously resided in South Hadley. He started the Auto Collison Technolgy Program for Westfield Vocational High School and worked as a instructor there for the past ten years. He enjoyed time at home, reading and trips to the beach with his daughter and brother. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Tammy (Erickson) and daughter Meagan , his daughter Nicole of Amherst as well as his brother George B. Champoux and his wife Leslie of Belchertown. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. EASTHAMPTON - Arlene M. (Daigle) Deschaine, 81, died at home Sunday June 26. She was born in Frenchville, Maine, December 16, 1923, the daughter of the late Willie and Alexenia Daigle. She attended school in Maine. She was a former twenty-seven year Holyoke resident and resided in Easthampton for the past fourteen years. She was retired from UMASS Amherst as a nutrition specialist. She was predeceased by her husband, Alphonse Deschaine in 1979. She is survived by six sons: Richard, Ronney, Larry, Leroy, Bryan, and James; and three daughters, Deabra, Darlene, and Sandra. She will be sadly missed by sixteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers and four sisters. The funeral procession will form Friday July 1st. between 8:45 and 9:15am at the Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton St., (Route 5) Holyoke, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am at Immaculate Conception Church, 33 Adams St., Easthampton. NORTH ADAMS -- Harvey E. "Pat" Denault, 69, of 47 Taft St. died Monday at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. Born in North Adams on March 16, 1936, son of Harvey and Mary Elliott Denault, he attended schools there and was a 1954 graduate of Drury High School. An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal. He was employed for many years at the General Cable Co. in Williamstown. Mr. Denault was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church in North Adams. He was a former member of the Greylock Community Club and was a daily member of the Northern Berkshire YMCA. An avid sports fan, he also enjoyed riding his bike and playing horseshoes. Ethel Keller was born in Edgard, La. and moved to Church Point with her husband, Dr. Clifford Keller, after completing training as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in New Orleans. She was a loved and respected member of the Church Point community for over 60 years. After her husband's death, she moved to Lafayette to live closer to her children. Her loving, warm, gracious and generous spirit will be missed dearly and remembered always by family and friends. BRUNSWICK -- Joseph P. Thibeault, 40, of James Street, died Sunday, June 25, 2005, the result of a motorcycle accident. He was born in Brunswick on June 14, 1965, a son of Ernest A. and Patricia Menard Thibeault. He graduated from Mount Ararat High School, where he was a member of the wrestling team. He was employed as a pressman at the Brunswick Times Record for 20 years and most recently was employed at the Kennebec Journal. He also worked in the produce department in the Brunswick and Freeport Shaw's Food Stores. Joseph enjoyed riding motorcycles, reading, drawing and fishing, especially the trip with his father and two brothers to Florida in 2003. He was a member of the Barber Shoppers and had a brown belt in martial arts. He is survived by his father, Ernest A. WATERVILLE -- Cecile M. Roy, 93, of Winslow died Monday, June 27, 2005, at Mount St. Joseph nursing home after a brief Illness. Cecile was born in Waterville on Sept. 29, 1911, a daughter of Henry and Edith (Mercier) King. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Winslow and as a child was a member of the Children of Mary. Cecile worked well into her 80s at C.F. Hathaway Co. and continued to live independently until the past few weeks. She loved gardening. Cecile was predeceased by her husband, Harold Roy, and two brothers, Ralph Roy and Lionel Roy. Surviving are two daughters, Yvette Poulin of Winslow and Germaine Wallace of Warren; a sister, Loretta Desveaux of Winslow; eight grandchildren, Stephen, Roger, Joyce, Bruce, Christine, Michael, Karen and David; 12 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harriett H. LaRocque passed away on Monday, June 27, 2005. She was 92 years old. Harriett was the loving wife of John LaRocque, who passed away in 1994. Mrs. Breaux was also a member of the Catholic Daughters for 50 years. Prior to her retirement, she was employed with Southern Pacific Railroad Company for 17 years. Survivors include one daughter, Lisa B. Karré and her husband, Albert M. Karré Jr.; one son, Michael D. Breaux and his wife, Kelley; one grandchild, Joseph F. Karré, all of Lafayette; and two step-grandsons, Lyle Guidry and Logan Guidry, of Breaux Bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luke O. Breaux, who died in February of 1986; her parents, Rex Edward and Eloise M. Martin Olivier; one sister, Ann Sallinger; and one brother, Kearney Olivier. A rosary was prayed at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Martin & Castille Funeral Home. FORT KENT- Rock Ouellette, 86, of Hall Street died Monday, June 27, 2005, at his daughter's residence in Brunswick. He was born June 3, 1919, in Fort Kent, a son of Joseph and Modeste (Roy) Ouellette. He graduated from Fort Kent High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Aug. 24, 1948, he married Corinne Clavette in Edmunston, Canada. He owned and operated Rock's Motel & Diner and was part owner of the Century Theatre. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, eating hot dogs and spending time at his camps in Lake Eunic, New Brunswick, Canada and St. Pamphille. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus and Past Commander of VFW from 1949 to 1952 all in Fort Kent. He was predeceased by his wife, Corinne Ouelette, Aug. 20, 2004; one brother, Valerie Ouellette; two sisters, Evangeline Martin and Martha McFarland. He is survived by one son, Philip Ouellette of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Frances Ouellette Merz and her husband, Walter, of Hollywood, Fla. and Lynn Pelletier and her husband, Gerald, of Brunswick; one brother, Ludger Ouellet and his wife, Sylvia "Vi", of Fort Kent; and one sister, Dolores Blanchette and her husband, Damien, of Fort Kent; three granddaughters, Katie Pelletier, Megan Pelletier and Amy Pelletier; and many nieces and nephews. BEVERLY O. CONTOIS -- SPOKANE, Wash. — Beverly O. Contois, 79, entered into rest in Spokane on June 25, 2005. Beverly was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Ortonville, Minn., the youngest of seven children born to Alaskan gold miner Charles Overby and his wife, Mathilde Ostlund. She grew up always expressing the sparkle and joy of life that drew us all to her as our loving mother, friend, and wife. As a young girl, she sewed shiny machineshop metal bits to a homemade circus costume and practiced on a trapeze, so she would be prepared for an exciting life. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas, and met her military husband, Paul Contois, at the Alamo in 1942. She received her degree in sociology from Eastern Washington University in 1978. Beverly was an accomplished pianist and studied music in Minneapolis. She was an expert seamstress, an avid antiques aficionado, and a dedicated caretaker in recent years for her sisters and friends. For 20 years, Beverly traveled the world extensively with her husband and family, living in Japan, Germany, Alaska and Cambodia, before settling in Spokane, where she resided for the past 40 years. She is survived by her four children, Ann Contois and husband Steve Reynolds, Paul Contois and wife Lynn, Tom Contois, Brian Contois and wife Melissa; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn and Myrtle; and several nieces and nephews. Beverly was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and four brothers. PITTSFIELD -- Beverly M. Brodeur, 64, of 123 Seymour St. died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. Born in Pittsfield on July 3, 1940, daughter of the late Isadore Plant and Virginia Mundy Plant of Dalton, she attended Dalton schools and lived in Dalton for 18 years. She also attended Berkshire Community College. She moved to Pittsfield in 1958. She worked from her home as a child care provider for 25 years until November 2003. Before that, she was employed by the former Grand Union supermarket in Pittsfield for five years. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting, traveling, fishing and roller skating. She and her husband, Robert C. Brodeur Sr., were married on Nov. 29, 1958, at St. Agnes' Church in Dalton. Besides her husband and mother, she leaves a son, Robert C. Brodeur Jr. of Pittsfield; two daughters, Lorie Dombkowski of Pittsfield and Cheryl Jasewicz of Dalton; a brother, David Plant of Dalton; three sisters, Marie Casella of Pittsfield and Bernice Noyes and Donna Houghtalin, both of Dalton; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandson. GREER, BURTON HAROLD The death of Burton Harold Greer, of Island View, NB, husband of Emily (Gould) Greer, occurred on June 27, 2005 at Pine Grove Nursing Home. Born in Temperance Vale, NB on October 20, 1917, he was a son of the late Harold and Elva (Cole) Greer. Mr. Greer and his family lived in Harvey Station from 1939 until 1978, when they moved to Noonan, NB. He was a selfemployed Lumber Contractor who worked for Harry Corey and J.D. Irving Ltd., retiring in 1982. He liked horses and also farmed for a few years in Harvey. Burton was an avid hunter. He was one of the founding members of the Harvey United Pentecostal Church; served on the Board of Elders and was Sunday School Superintendent for over 20 years. In later years, he attended Noonan United Pentecostal Church and served on the Board there as well. Besides his wife, Burton is survived by two sons, Donald (Luanne) Greer of Harvey Station, NB and Robert Greer of Beaver Dam, NB; two daughters, Myrtle (George) Dayton of Island View, NB and Carol (Keith) Reed of Moncton, NB; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister Marjorie (Kenneth) Carr of Geary, NB and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by one son Paul (infant 1951); four brothers, Hedley, Garnett, Clifford and Donald; and three sisters, Jeanette McHatten, Viola Whitlock and Leona Robichaud. HUGHES, Donald Robert Stewart Age 64, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away at home on Monday, June 27, 2005, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Regina, he was the son of the late Robert and Margaret Hughes. Don is survived by his wife of 40 years, Beverley; three children Jennifer (Bruce) MacMillan, Toronto; Heather (James) Leck, Dartmouth; David, Dartmouth; two grandchildren Ewan (13 weeks) and Zoe (11 weeks); his brother Wayne (Linda) Hughes, Winnipeg; and brothers-in-law Robert (Judy), Gordon (Pat) and Brian Law, Ottawa. Don was an avid golfer and curler. He was a past President of the Dartmouth Curling Club. His major passion was music and music education. He began his career in the RCMP Band in Ottawa. Leaving the band in 1967, he studied at the University of McGill, School of Music. After completing his Masters at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, he returned to a teaching position at McGill. In 1976 he relocated to Antigonish, teaching in the Music Department where he was the founding Director of the Jazz Studies program at St. Francis Xavier University; a truly unique program for Nova Scotia and Canada. Don was appointed the Supervisor of Music for the Dartmouth School Board in 1985. Under Don's vision, energy and leadership the music programs flourished and grew. He retired from the Dartmouth School Board in 1997. He continued to teach at Acadia University until 2003. The past three years have had many challenges for Don as his illness progressed. Throughout these times, Don never lost his determination, courage and sense of humour. His focus and enjoyment throughout his life has always been for his family and friends. Don will always be remembered and missed. In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be made to a music scholarship that has been established in memory of Don. WHISSELL, Rosario Alexander Born in Ottawa, Ontario on October 4, 1924. Passed away on June 27, 2005 in Richmond, BC Survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Violet Denniston. Rosario and Vi have four loving children: Patricia (Ivan) Slatten, Violet (Gordon) McGregor, Sylvia Watt and Jim (Deanna) Whissell; grandchildren Sandra (Ryan) Fuller, Jeff Slatten, Andrew (Kate) and Hayley Watt, Joshua and Nathan Whissell and Zachary; two elder sisters Berengere Sabourin (Quebec) and Pauline (Al) Mulholland (Toronto); cherished sister-in-law Dorothy Sample (Ottawa) and sons Frank (Betty) and Rick. Rosario was a devoted member of French Baptist and Bethany Baptist Churches (Ottawa) and Grandview Calvary Baptist Church (Vancouver). He worked for the Federal Government Health and Welfare (Ottawa) and was a dedicated driver for the Cerebral Palsy Association. He was wounded in World War II and struggled with Parkinsons for over 21 years, with a sense of humour to the end. Rosario was a skilled craftsman and left a legancy of wooden treasures. He loved sports, missed becoming a hockey player, and enjoyed playing pool with his friends at the Minoru Seniors' Centre. HANS FRITZEMEIER Hans Fritzemeier, 86, of Emo, Ont., passed away Thursday, June 23, 2005 at the Emo Health Centre in Emo. He was born Sept. 24, 1918 in Sonderborg, Denmark to the late Heinrich and Sophie (Hansen) Fritzemeier. Hans came to Canada in November, 1951. He had worked for INCO in Copper Cliff, Ont. from 1953 until his retirement in 1979. He liked spending time with his granddaughter, Deirdre, and he enjoyed gardening and puttering around. Hans is survived by his daughter, Gerd O’Sullivan; sister, Thea of Denmark; grandchildren, Deirdre, James, Timothy, and Anne; great-grandchildren, Danielle, Sarah, Tara, Maia, Johannes, Beatrice, and Francesca; and nieces and nephew. He was united in marriage to Ingeborg Hansen on Oct. 28, 1939, who predeceased him. He also was predeceased by his parents and three sisters. A celebration of Han’s life was held Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Long-Term Care Facilities in the Emo Health Centre, with Rev. Frances Flook officiating. CRANDLEMIRE, BRIAN MURRAY Brian Murray Crandlemire of Woodstock passed away on Sunday June 26 at his residence at the age of 54. Although Brian's life was much shorter than he had hoped, he left with no regrets. He had lived it completely; accumulating more friends and leaving more positive memories than most people would in two lifetimes. He will always be alive in the memories of his family and friends. Even after having been diagnosed with terminal cancer, he continued to live life to the fullest. With the generosity of his friends, he established the Victory trust Fund, which will continue to help families suffering the consequences of cancer. MARSHALL, MARY THERESA Mary Theresa (McMenamon) Marshall died at home on Tuesday, June 28, 2005. She was born in west Saint John on October 21, 1919, the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Mary Anne (Smith) McMenamon. She was predeceased by her husband Harold Edward Marshall, her eldest son Thomas James and four brothers, Kermie, Pat, Jim and Beau. She graduated with a B.A from the university of New Brunswick in 1941 where, as editor of the Brunswickian Mary was the first woman editor of a student newspaper in Canada. Her involvement with the university continued throughout her life, serving as president of the UNB alumnae and as a member of the board of governors. Mary was active in university women's and was a life-long member of the IODE. She was a leader of the St. Dunstan's Brownies and Girl Guides, president of the ladies section of the Fredericton Golf Club and active in the support and promotion of junior golf in the province. She was also active in the hospital aid, and served on the board of the Victoria Public Hospital. She had a life long passion for needlework. As a hooker and stitcher Mary was a member of local and national guilds. From her university years on she was a competitive bridge player and an avid reader. Her love of travel included four years living in Botswana and many trips to Europe. She is survived by her son William Kermack (Susan) of Fredericton, daughters Penelope Jane of Fredericton and Sally Margaret of Saint John; six grand children Christina, Caleb, and Brendan all of Fredericton, Michael of Oromocto, Elizabeth of Montreal and Owen of Toronto; and one great grandson Anthony of Fredericton. Mary is also survived by two sisters Kathleen (Ole) Kiar of Dresden, Ontario and Rosemarie (Simon) Marchant- Smith of York, England, several nieces and nephews and many life long friends. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations to the University of New Brunswick class of '41 scholarship fund, the learning disabilities association of New Brunswick or a charity of your choice. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held at St. Dunstan's church at noon on Thursday, June 30 followed by a reception in the Monsienor Boyd family centre. DYER, HELEN GRACE - Miss Helen Grace Dyer of Sussex, New Brunswick passed away at Sussex Health Centre on June 28, 2005. Cora McEachern June 19, 1907 - June 28, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Chapel Lawn Funeral Home Cora passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at the Victoria General Hospital at the age of 98 years. Cora was born in Baie St. Paul, Manitoba to Oval and Mary Oshel. The family later moved to the Pilot Mound district where she attended floral school. She married Lorne McEachern in 1929 and they made their home in Pilot Mound. In the early 40’s they moved to Treherne. There she was employed by Marshall Wells Hardware. In 1955 they took up residence in Winnipeg and she was employed by Eaton’s until her retirement. Cora was very close to all family members and showed interest in all of them. She was an active and much respected member of the Queen Esther Rebekah Lodge. For the past year she has been in a personal care home, and although her sight and hearing had failed, as well as her mobility, until very recently she has been able to carry on a conservation. She was predeceased by her husband Lorne in 1973, and by her sisters; Blanche Lacroix, Ethel Vahl, Alma Popplestone, Pearl Day, Violet Hunter and Laura Wallace, as well as a brother Alva Oshel. She was also predeceased by nieces; Annie Allarie, Beatrice Lacroix, Violet MacDonald, Corinne McClymont and Dahlia Zornes, and by nephews Floyd Lacroix and Walter Lacroix, as well as by Grand nephews; Walter Allarie, James Morgan, and Lucien Lacroix. Left to mourn her passing are nieces; Dahlia Braden, Yvonne Byrka, Doreen Morgan (Ken), nephew Harold Popplestone and their families, as well as many grand nephews and nieces and great great nieces and nephews. A special thanks to the nurses and staff at Vista Park Lodge and Dr. Tomy and nurses at the Victoria Hospital. Also the support of Janet Cutler and Elias Heppner has been much appreciated. In lieu of flowers, friends so wishing may make a donation in Cora’s memory to a charity of one’s choice. Our iron man is gone. He used to laugh when we called him that. “The iron is getting rusted”, he would scoff. But the rust was not the problem; in the end the engine just couldn’t keep up with his iron will any longer. George enjoyed 44 years in the Coast Guard serving on the West Coast and in the Arctic. Retirement years spent in Victoria with friends and family. His grandchildren were the light of his life.
