PEKAR, James Eugene 1917-2005. St. Michael opened the gates and on wings of angels Jim's soul found his resting place, in his 88th year on February 9, 2005. He peacefully leaves behind his wife Elizabeth Orban, married 62 years, his only home for 62 years and his church for 62 years. Survived by two sons, Joseph of Windsor and Thomas and friend Jude of St. Catherine's, two daughters Molly Pekar Faubert (husband Ronald) of Chatham and her two sons Jeffrey Shaw of Toronto, Steven Shaw of Sudbury and Jane Pekar Scanga (husband Anthony) of Toronto and their four children Noah, Sarah, Miryam and Rebekah. His brother Julius Bud Pekar (wife Veronica) and niece Deborah. His nephew Richard (son of the late Andrew) wife Ann and their families Raymond and wife Lori, Duane and wife Annemarie and Laurie and husband Rusty Dube. His niece Diana Beneteau and husband David and their families Kathleen (husband Andrew Nicholson), Catherine (husband Fabio Muscedere), Kimberly (husband Don McCutcheon). Cleveland, Ohio relatives. The Pekarik and Orban families. Joseph and Dorothy Williamson from Belle River. Many thanks for those who visited, telephoned and sent cards and letters, our neighbours who helped. Also our Disciple Friends from all over Canada and the U.S. He was a good and likable man always ready to help, he saved many soles for twenty years on Ottawa Street, and many young cooks asked his advice on cuts of meat and how to prepare them. In his lifetime he began working at the larger chain stores Dominion Loblaws and A&P and then in many specialized gourmet shops. He loved fast cars and he loved to tinker with them. He made lifelong friends and he loved to take each of his children separately to the warehouses on Wednesday afternoons for a special treat. Daddy was special! Jim was a member of the Great Western Lodge #47 Windsor District. Cremation has taken place. Alphonse Anthony "A.A." Laporte -- 1930 - 2005 -- Alphonse Anthony Laporte, 74, a retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant colonel, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at his home in Pecan Plantation surrounded by family.Memorial Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Acton, with a reception following in the church hall. Burial: next month in Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, Calif. Memorials: In lieu of flowers those wishing to remember Al, Kindly send donations to either Tomlinson Hospice, 3002 E. The family is indebted to both for their help and kindness.Mr. Laporte was born in New York City, reared in Washington, D.C.; Tenafly, N.J.; and New Rochelle, N.Y. He was a graduate of Iona Prep in New Rochelle and the University of Notre Dame, and received both an MBA and an MPA from National University, San Diego. Following graduation from Notre Dame, he attended Officers Candidate School in Quantico, Va., and in 1952 was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He served his counrty in the Korean War as well as during two tours in Vietnam, where he received commendations and ribbons he never mentioned. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1978 at MCRD, San Diego, and subsequently joined the Small Business Adminstration from which he retired in 1993. He and his wife lived in San Diego and Coronado, Calif., until moving to Texas in 1995.Survivors: In addition to his wife, Edie Smith Laporte, he is survived by his sons, Thomas Gregory of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and Anthony Laurent and wife, Krista, of Houston; his sister, Virginia of Chatham, Mass.; his granddaughter, Jolie of Houston; and his wife's children, Bruce Smith and wife, Ruth, of Sheboygan, Wis., Lynn Phillips and husband, John, of Alvarado, and Craig Smith and wife, Dorrie, of Kingsland, Ga., and their children and grandchildren. DAVIGNON, SUZANNE M. 'SUE' (MATEAU), 54, of Downing Drive, West Warwick died on Friday at the Hernando-Pasco Heath Care Center in Dade City, Florida. She was the wife of Leo R. Davignon. She was born in Warwick, a daughter of Lorraine (Gosselin) Mateau of Coventry and the late Herve Mateau. She worked for the State of RI for over 31 years the last 20 years as a secretary in the RI State Senate Office. She was a member of the West Warwick Lions Club Cubs and a past secretary of the Sunshine Wheelers Camping Club.Besides her husband and mother, she leaves a son, Michael R. Davignon of West Warwick and a brother, Richard Mateau of Coventry.The funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. from the R. Potvin & Son Funeral Home, 45 Curson Street, West Warwick with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, 20 Washington Street, West Warwick. GAFFNEY, Christopher Gaffney Consulting Ph.D, JCD 1946-2005 With great sorrow, we announce Chris' death, of cancer, on February 13, 2005, at home attended by his family. Chris was born in Bradford, U.K. and was ordained to the priesthood (C.Ss.R), in 1970. In addition to directing innumerable religious retreats in the U.K., as Director of Publications of Redemptorist Publications he was instrumental in building an international presence for them and for several of its publications. In London (U.K.), he served as Vicar Provincial of the London Province and as Rector of St. Mary's Clapham. Through his work and studies, he travelled and ministered extensively throughout the U.K., Africa, Europe and North America. While studying in Ottawa, he worked at both St. Patrick's Basilica and as Chaplain at the Riverside Hospital in Ottawa. In 1990, he was granted a Ph.D. in Philosophy from University of Ottawa, as well as a Pontifical Doctorate (Canon Law) from St. Paul University. Thereafter, he founded and directed Gaffney Consulting, a vibrant local career development company, and once again tended the important needs of many private and corporate clients. Chris was graced with many, many qualities, chief among them a generosity of spirit which ensured that we all revelled in his humanity, integrity, exquisite sense of humour, good counsel, balanced perspective, deeply held faith, superb oratory, comic theatrical style, love of history and literature, enthusiasm for emerging technology, romantisicm, a healthy appetite for good wine and fine food, sense of occasion, stories galore, and seemingly limitless joy and optimism. His loss will be profoundly felt by his wife, Cynthia Harris, his step-son Ryan Evans, his mother Kathleen, his devoted dog Norah, and his extended family (Claire, Bruce, Dan and Sue, Gretchen and Steve, Jen), his nieces and nephews (Kurt, Stephanie, Dan, Bryanna, Dylan, Max, and Emily in England), his Redemptorist family, work colleagues, as well as many good friends. Born in Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late John and Annie (Morvan) Hansen. Marie worked for many years with the Nova Scotia Light and Power Company as secretary to the president. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Parish for more than 40 years. She loved traveling and traveled extensively with her sister, Nora and their friend, Constance McKenna. She was also a beautiful dancer, a pastime she greatly enjoyed. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Surviving are sister, Nora Granter; brothers, Gerald (Doris) and Edward (Joan); sister-in-law, Martha; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mrs. Esther A. Dumont (Quillin) 10/02/1918 - 2/13/2005, loved each day as if it was her last. She was proud of her Irish heritage and no one appreciated family more than she. It was her belief that grudges were a waste of precious time in our short lives. Esther instilled in her family the pride of knowing you are as good as anyone else but no better, and that a simple smile could make anyone beautiful. She believed above all else that God is always present in our lives, that loneliness and being alone are two different things, and that faith is the most precious gift we will ever receive. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Raymond, and her infant son, Daniel; her parents, Daniel and Margaret Quillin; her brothers, Frank and Lester; her sisters, Margaret Dudick, Kathryn Wessely and Mildred Bechtold. She is survivied by her daughters, Yvonne (Paul) Sydloski, Yvette (Brian) Becker; her grandchildren, Brian (Kelly) and Kevin Becker; and her great-granddaughter, Grace Anna Becker; her brother-in-law, Richard Bechtold, sisters-in-law, Sister Valentine Dumont, Loretta (Ted) Hitchcock; and many cherished nieces and nephews. Beloved wife of 51 years to Elio Pierobon. Loving mother of Teresa Page, Paul (Laurie) Pierobon and the late Frank Pierobon (October 29, 2003). Nonna will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Jason (Michelle), Jacob, Roberta, Matthew, Emma and Ashley and by her great grandson Elio Jacob Frank. LeMAY, Armand, 86, of New Port Richey, passed away Friday, February 11, 2005, at Windsor Woods Convalescent Center in Hudson. Armand was born in West Warwick, R.I., and came to this area from Coventry, R.I., 35 years ago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and was a carpenter at the Naval Station Quonset Point. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW, and the Eagles Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Mary LeMay of New Port Richey; three daughters, Donna Sechio of West Warwick, R.I., Gail Tatangelo of Coventry, R.I., and Sharon Nowicki; one brother, William LeMay of Cape Coral, Fla.; one sister, Rita Bell of West Warwick, R.I.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. AUGUSTA -- Oscar Romain Morin, 84, of Pleasant Hill Road went home to the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, following a brief illness. He was born in Livermore Falls on Feb. 28, 1920, to the late Charles and Clara (Pelletier) Morin.Mr. Morin worked at various shoe shops in the Augusta and Boston areas during his early adulthood. He also built roads along the Maine coast while working for the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. During World War II, Mr. Morin served in the Marine Corps as an aerial photographer. He then moved to the Boston area, where he graduated from the Industrial Technical School of Boston, specializing in HVAC and refrigeration. Upon his return to Augusta in the early 1950s, he entered employment with the U.S. Postal Service in Augusta, from which he retired after 30 years of service. He also owned and managed several apartment and office buildings for more than 40 years. He loved to garden, fish, hunt, tinker with his tractors and spend summers at the camp he built on the lake.Mr. Morin was a lifelong communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church, a life member of the Calumet Club, a member of Abnaki Council 334 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and Abnaki Assembly 346 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Cushnoc Senior Citizens and the Association of Retired Federal Employees.In addition to his parents, Mr. Morin was predeceased by three brothers, Lionel, Conrad and Ernest Morin; and a sister, Rose St. Amand.Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Cecile (Patenaude) Morin of Augusta; four daughters, Lucie Dunn and her husband, Patrick, of Augusta, Elaine Morin Reilly of Holland, Mich., Dr. Louise Morin Davy and her husband, Bart, of Derry, N.H., and Alice Morin Sloan and her husband, Michael, of Venice, Calif.; five grandchildren, Catalina Dunn, Dylan and Samantha Reilly and Katrina and Andrew Davy; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where officers and members of the Calumet Club are asked to meet at 7 p.m. Friday to recite prayers for their departed member. Alvina "Winnie" Knecht September 30, 1915 - February 13, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Glen Eden Funeral Home (Winnipeg) It is with much sadness that we have to announce the passing of Alvina Knecht on February 13, 2005, In early years the family resided on Alexander Avenue and then moved to Gallagher Street, where Winnie grew up with her two brothers Ted and Ernie, who have since predeceased her as well as her parents Peter and Elizabeth (Koch) Knecht. As a self taught and determined lady, Winnie worked as a domestic, as a laundress and then worked at Investors Syndicate where she remained until her retirement. She loved traveling but enjoyed being home with her pet dogs. Winnie was exceptional when it came to crochet. He unique designs and many works of crocheting were of her own imagination and made with little effort. It landed her first place at the exhibition. All of us have something to treasure and remember her by and shall keep and use them always. When Winnie's health failed, she resided at the Golden Door on Pembina Highway. She was the only lady who controlled the hallways with her electric wheelchair. Her chair peeled rubber as good as a Mustang. Never used a horn - just hollered BEEP and everyone moved. She didn't believe in speed limits. When not riding around, she was consumed with her crocheting. Winnie was one of a kind. Thank you Golden Door staff for all the kindness, care, patience and understanding throughout Winnie's stay. Winnie is going to be very much missed by her best friends; Marilyn Brown (Les) (Marnie), her life long childhood friend Mary Neilson, Debbie Urbanski (Chris), the Gallagher girls and her pet dog Holly. Winnie is survived by her sister-in-law Kae Knecht; nieces Bonnie and Barb; nephews Brian and Jim. At Winnie's request, no funeral service will be held. Cremation has taken place. Raymond J. Damour, 80, of Centre Street, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association's Hospice House in Concord. Raymond was born in Warner, the son of the late Joseph H. and Exilda (Duperon) Damour and was a graduate of Henniker High School and New Hampshire College of Accounting. Raymond was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II in B24 and B29 heavy bomber groups as an air crew member. He worked for the New Hampshire Highway Department from 1950 to 1962; the city of Concord from 1962 to 1964 in the assessing department; the New Hampshire Tax Commission and the New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration from 1964 until 1984; and as a member of the New Hampshire Board of Tax and Land Appeals from 1984 until his retirement in 1988. He had served as finance officer for the Hooksett Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol since 1967 and participated in the summer encampments as well as teaching aerospace courses to the C.A.P. cadets. He loved traveling and visited England and Europe whenever possible. He also traveled over most of the United States by motor home and Amtrak train. He had a passion for flying and flew his antique Piper J-5 over New Hampshire and New England. Raymond is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rose M. (Abruzzese) Damour of Concord; two sons, Donald Damour of Concord and David Damour of Contoocook; three granddaughters; one grandson; three sisters, Theresa Young of Manchester, Irene Fisher of Micco, Fla., and Evelyn Bracy of Henniker; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Alice, Rita and Lillian; and six brothers, Paul, Maurice, Eddie, Donat, Louis and Charlie. Calling hours were held yesterday at Waters Funeral Home in Concord. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, 135 N. State St., Concord. OAKFIELD - Frank L. Boutilier, 86, of Oakfield, slipped peacefully beneath the waves, Feb. 13, 2005, at the Houlton Regional Hospital with family at his side. He was born on May 21, 1918, in Oakfield, the son of Roy W. and Vera (Shorey) Boutilier. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Medical Corps in the ETO as well as serving stateside with the Military Police. He started working for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad as a Carman in 1952 and worked there until his retirement in 1983. After his retirement he spent many enjoyable hours scouting for moose on the Duck Pond Road and knew most of them by their first names. A confirmed bachelor for 57 years, Frank met Mona Horten Godsoe at the Hilltop Lanes while bowling for pennies on Monday evenings. They were married for 24 years when she passed away in May 1998. He leaves behind his stepdaughter, Joyce Blake and her husband, Kenneth, of Houlton; six stepgrandchildren, Roger Blake and his wife, Denise, of Linneus, David Brown and his wife, Julie, of Houlton, Margene Young and her husband, Jamie, of Windham, Rhonda Brophy of Shin Pond, Kristy Swallow and her husband, Gregory, of Hodgdon, Kendra Thorton and her husband, Malcolm, of Houlton; 15 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great- grandchildren; brothers, Ronald H. and his wife, Helen, Clyde O. and his wife, Patty, all of Oakfield, and William S. Boutilier of Smyrna; many nieces and nephews, one special nephew, Ronnie Bragg of Houlton. He was predeceased by brothers, Earle J., Kenneth R. and Wellman R.; sisters, Minnie Bustard and Helen Bragg. Frank was of a rare breed and was a nice person, even before he died, he will be missed by many, especially by Dutchie Hamm and Gordon Morton and his two cats, Suki and Tom. LAWRENCE -- Sister Lena Breton, SGM, 85, died Thursday at Mary Immaculate Nursing/Restorative Center.Born in Lowell and educated at St. Joseph's School in Lowell, she entered the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, "Grey Nuns," in 1940 in Cambridge and made her profession of vows in 1943.Sister Lena earned her licensed practical nurse diploma from the former Holy Ghost Hospital, now Youville Hospital in Cambridge, in the 1940s. She was a child-care worker for nine years, both in Worcester and Nashua, N.H. She worked 32 years at Youville Hospital, 20 of which she served as supervisor of Patient Equipment Services, four years at The Protectory of Mary Immaculate in Lawrence and 14 years at St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.In 1993, Sister Lena celebrated her Golden Jubilee as a Grey Nun. She retired in 1995 and moved to Youville Place in Lexington, where she participated in the Grey Nun Adult Day Health Care Program. She later moved to MI Nursing/Restorative Center.She leaves her sister Mrs. Donald Morin of Andover, brother Roland Breton of Dracut, and nieces and nephews.ARRANGEMENTS: A Mass of Christian Burial was today at Youville Place Chapel in Lexington. "Smokey" Rabideau Sr., 78, passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with cancer.He was born Sept. 2, 1926, in AuSable Forks, the son of Henry and Roseanne (Gero) Rabideau.On Sept. 9, 1948, he married Lucretia (Pat) Hewston. They had 52 years together until her death June 7, 2001.He served in the U.S. Army B BTRY 74th Field Artillery in the Philippines during World War II.
