SHALLOW, James "Jim" Philip Joseph In loving memory of James "Jim" Philip Joseph Shallow, 61 years, who passed away Thursday morning, April 22, 2004 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital-Laurentian Site. Born in Calvert Township, he married Louise in Sudbury in 1970. He worked in Timmins and then at the INCO Levack Mine for 32 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 503, Onaping and the Golden Age Club. Jim loved the outdoors, swimming, and snow mobiling, he was a member of the Skidoo Club and served as a Trail Warden. He will be remembered as a kind and generous man, who had a strong will and a big heart. Jim loved all kids, especially his grandchildren. Beloved husband of Louise (Campbell) Shallow of Onaping. Loving father of Joanne (husband Tom Ferguson), Bonnie (fiance Brian Bigney) and Jamie (partner Jesse Jenkins) all of Onaping. Cherished grandfather of Heidi, Tommy and Tanner. Sadly missed by Murphy, Tara and Holly. Dear son of James and Isabelle Shallow both predeceased. Margaret Lillian Meldrum ( Doucette) September 22, 1939 - April 06, 2004 MELDRUM, Margaret Lillian - 64, Dartmouth. After a complex battle with illness, Margaret passed away on April 6, 2004, in Dartmouth General Hospital ICU, with her family by her side. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and friend. She worked as a nurse, was a trainer for St. John Ambulance and retired from the Home of the Guardian Angel. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, playing a good card game, spending time with family and was an avid Royal Family follower. Friends and family were her pride and her grandson was her joy. In her spare time she volunteered for various organizations. She is survived by mother, Mayme Doucette; husband of 47 years, Alvin Meldrum; son, Brent Meldrum; daughter, Seanne (Ben) Dort; grandson, Solomon Dort; sister, Darlene (Kenneth) Roberts; nephews, Kyle and Evan Roberts; lifelong friend, Marie Helene Delaney; aunts, uncles and numerous cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, David Doucette and "Dad" Charles Doucette. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 9, both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, in St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Caledonia Road, Dartmouth. Burial to follow in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Joan E Smith~Hislop (née Bennett) April 11, 1935 - April 06, 2004 It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at her residence. Joan is lovingly remembered by her husband Jack, her children Kerri (Wayne) Lipischak, their children Kyle and Wesley, Doug (Donna) Smith, their children Kaitlyn and John, Brian (Cheryl) Smith, their children Tyler, Ryan and Jennifer, Sharon (Glenn) Golin, their children Stephanie, Conrad and Warren, her brother Bill (Grace) Bennett, her step-children Mark (JoAnne) Hislop, their children Brandi and Jude, David (Roxanne) Hislop, their children Vanessa, Marlee, and Lauren, Tracy (Kevin) Hislop. Mom enjoyed the outdoors, especially spending time at her summer getaway in Pinawa. She really enjoyed fishing, her flowers, feeding the birds and selling her crafts at the Pinawa Craft Sale. In the winter season, she loved to walk in the mall. She cherished her two special feathered friends Casey and Spooky. The whole family always looked forward to dinner at Grandma’s on special occasions because of her amazing meals. She never let anyone go hungry in her household; it just wasn’t allowed. Joan was born and raised in Winnipeg, where she spent most of her life, raising her family and watching her grandchildren grow. Prior to her retirement, she enjoyed the time spent working for Versatile Manufacturing. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12, 2004 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). Louis "Bud" Sidney Heughan January 02, 1924 - April 10, 2004 Heughan Peacefully at Parkwood Hospital on Saturday, April 10, 2004 Louis Sidney (Bud) Heughan of London, formerly of Oakville in his 81st year. Louis was a sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941 to 1946. From 1948 to 1968 Louis served as a sergeant in the Royal Canadian Engineers. Bud was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Beloved husband of the Late Patricia Heughan (1999). Loving father of Ann and her husband David Bowles of England and Roby and his wife Shirley Reid of London. Proud grandfather of ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Cecil of Pictou, Nova Scotia and Esther Wagensveld of Drumbo, Ontario. Predeceased by two brothers Warren and Ira, two sisters Edna and Viola and brother-in-law Jan Wagensveld. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Gloria Bertrand August 10, 1907 - April 08, 2004 Passed away April 8, 2004 in Penticton, British Columbia. Gloria was born in Montreal, Quebec on August 10, 1907. She moved with her parents at the age of three, as they worked their way west on the railroad until they arrived in Saskatchewan where they began homesteading in the Brock area. Gloria cared for her four siblings after her mother passed away when she was thirteen years old. She married Frank, her husband of forty-six years who predeceased her on May 24, 1974. Together they homesteaded at Eston, Saskatchewan where they raised fourteen children. They continued farming until 1956 when they retired to Calgary. In 1989, she moved to Naramata, British Columbia to live with her daughter Esther. She was also predeceased by her brothers, James, John, Thomas and Gordon Campbell, and sisters Sadie Bertram, Dorothea Reeves, and Ruth Juzwishen. Gloria is survived by her brother Bob Campbell and sister Mary Ainsley; daughters, Audrey Kattelus, Margaret Pederson, Esther Moss, Frances Gustafson, Helen Corcoran, Patricia Steinberg, Mary Fraser, Shirley Knopke and Barbara Fry; her sons, Leonard, Edward, Henry, Robert and Joe. She was proud of her forty-nine grandchildren, seventy-six great- grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren, whom she could remember by name. Helen Irene Lalor Helen Irene Lalor Peacefully, on Friday, April 16, 2004, at the Fort Garry Care Centre, passed away at the age of 84 years. .She will be lovingly remembered by her husband George, son Kevin, daughter Katherine-Mary (Patrick Martin), her four grandsons Myles, Reilly, Carey and Kelley. Helen was born at the Kingston Military College where her father was on staff. When Helen was six years old, she and her family moved to Montreal. Helen met George in Montreal where he was stationed in 1940. They married in 1943 and were married just over 60 years. Helen was a loving mother and homemaker. She will be dearly missed. Cremation has taken place and a memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at Mary Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Dr. with Father Carl Tarnopolski celebrant. A private family interment will take place at a later date in Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Special thanks to Dr. Sheldon Permack for all his years of support and kindness. Hector Beaton May 27, 1922 - April 10, 2004 Beaton, Hector With the courage that carried Hector throughout his life it is with deepest sorrow that his family announces his passing to be with the Lord, Jesus Christ on April 10, 2004. Hector was formerly of Port Hood, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and the late of Windsor (Cencourse Apartments).Hector was the beloved son of the late Duncan J. Beaton (1956) and Mary Jessie (Cameron) (1966). He was the loving brother to Teresa MacMaster and husband the late John and sister-in-law Doreen Beaton. Hector was predeceased by sisters and brothers Rachell Carroll and husband George, Margaret Gray and husband Bernard, Malcolm Beaton, Christine Fregoe and husband Gordon, Jerome Beaton, Alexander Beaton and Catherine Beaton. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and many friends throughout his life. His presence will be greatly missed in the lives of those who loved him. James Harold Shawcross James Harold Shawcross, on Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Deer Lodge Centre, Winnipeg. He will be sadly missed by his children; sons, Wesley and his wife Debbie, Rick and his wife Judith, Steven and his wife Tracy; his daughter Judy and her husband Jerry Reardon-Smith; his dear friend and companion for many years, Sarah Toogood, whom he loved dearly till his final days. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Tiffany, Andrea, Christopher, Alexandra and Dylan; as well as his great grandchildren, Joshua and Kieran. Jim was predeceased by his wife Olive in December 1979; and his sister Margaret McDonald of Toronto. Jim was born in Sarnia, Ontario on March 25, 1922 and moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1966 where he worked at Metal and Alloys until his retirement in 1981. He also served overseas during the Second World War. During his retirement, Dad was at his happiest spending his days on the golf course and in clement weather, a crib game was always a good second choice. In compliance with Dad’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. Our family would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Centre for their care and understanding during Jim’s failing health. Edgar’s career as a Conservation Officer initiated several moves for the family then finally settling in Regina. Following Edgar’s death in 1984, Irene moved several times then in 2003 to the Lutheran Home. Irene’s family extend special thanks to Pastor Dennis Fingas & the incredible resources of the Regina Lutheran Home. Irene is at peace and now in the arms of her Heavenly Family. Marion Josie Bales (née Qually) May 30, 1912 - April 12, 2004 Peacefully, at West Park Manor Personal Care Home in Winnipeg at the age of 91 years. Marion is survived by sons, Vern (Lori) and Brian of Winnipeg; daughters, Bonnie Gasper (Fred) of Ashern, Merle Bloom (Richard) of Winnipeg; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; sisters Eunice Storey and Mabel Piper of Abbotsford, B.C., Valetta Petterson (George) of Winnipeg; brother Stanley Qually (Norma) of Vancouver, B.C.; sister-in-law Mary Qually; and many nieces and nephews. Marion was predeceased by husband Vivan, mother Martha, father Billiam and Tillie, brother Douglas and brothers-in-law Gordon Storey and Arnold Piper. Marion, the eldest of six children, was born at her parents home in Dacotah, MB on May 30, 1912 where she resided most of her life. She was a mother, farm wife and she did parttime work away from home. Her main interests were cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, knitting and she was an accomplished piano player. The family would like to thank home care providers Hilda Stoesz, Edith Bergen, Tammy Robertson, Shelia Froude and Isla Sauter. Thank you to her special friends Eva Pichurski and Mary Filsche who visited her regularly and most especially to the compassionate and caring staff of West Park Manor. Lois Pearl Stewart October 01, 1919 - April 14, 2004 With sadness we announce the passing of Lois Stewart on April 14, 2004 at Deer Lodge Centre. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister Helen; brother-in-law Fred Rew; and nephew Larry. Lois is survived by her niece Linda (Don) Wikander, their sons Clint and Doug (Megan), daughter Karyn (James) Hope and their sons Jordan and Zachary; as well as other friends and family. Lois was born on October 1, 1919 to parents Minnie and Serl Stewart in Marchwell, Saskatchewan. She spent her early childhood in Mt. Hope, Washington until the family settled on a farm in Gladstone, Manitoba. As a young woman, she moved to Winnipeg and began her long career with Hudson Bay, first with the Northern Stores, and eventually as one of the early computer programmers. A long-time member of Knox United Church, she was an independent and caring woman with many friends but always with time for family. “Auntie Lois” will be missed. He had 27 years service with the Provincial government as a steamfitter for the Department of Transportation and Public Works. William "Bill" Smitzniuk Peacefully, on April 2nd, 2003 at the Vista Park Lodge, William Smitzniuk passed away. Left to cherish his memory is his wife Julia (nee Boyko) and 7 children, Wilbert (Terry) Smitzniuk, Merlyne (John) Werezak, Sharon (David) Nazar, Laurie (Kathy) Smitzniuk, Bernice Kralka, Dale Smitzniuk, Melvin (Linda) Smitzniuk, as well as 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. William is also survived by sister, Sophie Toffan and brother Alex Smitzniuk. Dad was born on October 12th, 1917 in Krasne, Saskatchewan. Dad and Mom were married in Medicine Hat, Alberta where he was stationed in the armed forces at Suffield. They settled in Wynyard, Saskatchewan where he worked for the CPR and the Town until retiring to Winnipeg in September 1999. They were to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary on May 4th, 2003. Throughout Dad's life family always came first and foremost. He was a great kibitzer and had a knack for finding a humorous side to every situation. Cremation had taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m.Saturday, April 5th at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd, (South of the Royal Canadian Mint). Interment will follow at the GLen Lawn Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will also take place in the reception centre. Ann Koshowski October 23, 1905 - April 19, 2004 Peacefully on April 19, 2004, Ann passed away at Oakview Place. She was born in the Western Ukraine on October 23, 1905 and came to Canada in 1929. In 1931, she married Steve Koshowski and enjoyed 64 years of marriage until his passing in 1995. Ann is survived by her son Bob (Sharon); grandson Christopher; Sharon’s family; Ann’s sister Olga and her extended family in the Ukraine; as well as her niece, Verna Birban and her family in Trenton, NJ. Besides her husband Steve, Ann was predeceased by her parents; three sisters; four brothers; and nephew John Birban. Ann was a determined, smart person who learned the English language on her own quickly. She worked at several jobs during difficult times to help her family as a young woman. She never forgot about her family in the Ukraine and never stopped helping them. She was a great cook and gardener. Her garden and her flowers were always beautiful. She loved to have her fingers in the dirt. Being an animal lover, she would bring home many strays and gave them a better life. This gave her great satisfaction. We would like to express our gratitude to the staff of Oakview Place and especially the Third Floor North Staff who treated Ann with sensitivity, love and compassion for 12 years. You cared for her, enriched her life, provided emotional support and real concern for us. Thank you. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 26, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue with Reverend William Michalski officiating. Joseph Henry Goldston September 15, 1919 - April 27, 2004 GOLDSTON, Joseph Henry - Dartmouth. Born in London, England on September 15, 1919, died in the Dartmouth General Hospital Tuesday, April 27, 2004. He was predeceased by his wife, Vera (Nafthal); grandson, Jason Brinton; parents, Henry and Priscilla (Pearl) Goldson; brother, Jack, who was killed during the Second World War. Joe came to Nova Scotia in 1943 with the Royal Air Force and was stationed in Greenwood. He met and married Vera Nafthal in 1944. After returning to England at the end of the war, Joe and Vera began their life together in Middleton. Together they brought up a family of five children and it was a common sight in town to see the whole family riding their bicycles, with Joe at the head of the group. Joe was a cyclist in England, where he belonged to two cycling clubs. He obtained a scaling license for pitprops and worked for Mac M. Nafthal Limited both in the company and as manager of "the family farm" in Nictaux. He then became part owner of A.W. Allen & Son. Later, after taking a portrait course at the New York Institute of Photography, he opened Goldston's Photography Studio in Middleton. Several years later, he became Managing Editor of The Mirror for Fundy Group Publications. Joe served on the Middleton Town Council and was chairman of the Police Commission. He was a member of the local Lions Club and a very active community member. For more than 25 years, Joe and Vera enjoyed square and round dancing, traveling across Canada and the United States to pursue this interest and making many friends along the way. For several years Joe was a business counselor with the Federal Business Development Bank counseling those wishing to improve on or start new businesses. Since 1979 Joe and Vera made their home in Dartmouth near their children. Joe became an avid bridge player and enjoyed being a member of the Dartmouth Players and Northwood Players. He loved being outdoors, taking long walks, traveling, often driving to Florida for the winters. He loved to read and enjoyed reciting stories and poems to family and friends. He volunteered with the Literacy Program in Dartmouth as well. He is survived by his children, Janet Imbeault, Jack Goldston, Sharon Goldston, Peggy (Wayne) Brinton, Bill (Muriel) Goldston; grandchildren, Suzanne, Patricia, Heather, Sarah, Lee, Matthew and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Josh and Tori. Joe was a greatly loved man who will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Visiting 7-9 p.m. today and funeral service 10 a.m. Friday, followed by a reception, all in Atlantic Funeral Home, Dartmouth, Rev. David Watt officiating. Interment in Nictaux Cemetery, Nictaux, at 3 p.m. Friday. A reception at Falcourt Inn (the original home of Joe and Vera Goldston) will follow the interment. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or charity of your choice.

Harvey Kirck October 14, 1928 - February 18, 2002 Harvey Kirck, a news anchor for CTV News for more than two decades, died on Monday, February 18, 2002. He was 73. Mr. Kirck died at home, in Toronto, of a heart attack. Mr. Kirck, was the national news anchor for the privately-owned Canadian Television Network (CTV) from 1963 to 1984. He has been called Canada's version of Walter Cronkite. Born in Uno Park, Ontario. Kirck got hooked on broadcasting as a boy growing up on a farm in New Liskeard, listening to radio personalities like Jack Armstrong, All-American Boy, and CBC newscaster Lorne Greene, who would later become Pa Cartwright on the TV western, Bonanza. Beginning in 1948, Kirck served a long apprenticeship in broadcasting as an announcer who hosted programs, narrated commercials, wrote, delivered, and occasionally reported the news. He worked at radio and TV stations in Sault Ste. Marie, Barrie and Hamilton and in Calgary and Toronto. In 1960 he became a news anchor for a television station. Three years later, he joined the CTV news service, then stationed in Ottawa. The fledgling network, only two years old, was determined to challenge the dominance of the established CBC Television News. In 1966, after a change in the ownership structure of the network, CTV News was moved to Toronto. For Kirck, it was a mixed blessing. He lost his position as news editor to concentrate on being the on-screen presenter (though he also continued to participate in the writing of the newscast). CTV's strategy at the time was to present a different take on the news than that of the industry leading CBC. It hoped to produce a bright and lively newscast that would contrast with the supposedly stodgy CBC approach. The strategy worked, as a 1972 CBC survey discovered, when CTV News scored higher as "more complete, lively, aggressive, fresh, friendly, interesting and in-touch". That success owed something to Kirck's persona. He was tall and heavy-set with a craggy face that signalled experience. With his deep and authoritative voice, Kirck was eminently believable. He anchored the national newscast from 1963 until 1984 — for the last seven of those years co-anchoring with Lloyd Robertson. Mr. Kirck read his final newscast for CTV in April, 1984. After his final sign-off, Kirck travelled the country and did a series of on-the-road features for Canada AM. He also did some work for W Five and wrote a 1984 book called “Nobody Calls Me Mr. Kirck”, about his years in the news business. Kirck was married three times; to Maggie in 1947 (divorced); to Renate in 1962 (divorced); and to Brenda in 1983. Knowlton Nash, Kirck’s CBC rival at the time of his final newscast, referred to Mr. Kirck as "an old friend to millions of Canadians."
