Former resident of Ottawa. Peacefully at Carleton Place District Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, January 14, 2003. Beloved husband of Emma (nee Severson). Loving father of Linda Tranton (Randy), Debra Steele (Ron), Valdina Relyea (Rob) and Walter Hall (Missy). Devoted grandfather of Deborah (Chris Waghorn), Shawn, John, Lisa, Julie, Matthew, Jennifer, James, Heather and Morgan. Dear great-grandfather of Quinn and Harper. Predeceased by his parents Valdina and Walter Hall. Loving brother of Mary Hall Goodier (the late Alan) and the late William (the late Mae). Dearest uncle of Judy Schryburt and Mary Jayne Vollrath. A member of Ottawa Tech teams in 1939 and 1940 with Arnie Morrison as a coach. They called him "Dimples", but there is nothing to that name when it came to playing a hard game at inside wing. George moved to the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1941 winning the Grey Cup. Enlisting in 1942, he served 4 1/2 years with the Royal Canadian Air Force and played football with the Lachine RCAF team in 1942 and 1943. In 1944 he was attached to the Montreal Navy team, along with Eric Fleet, and performed on Glen Brown's squad that won the Dominion Championship. Rejoining the Rough Riders in 1946, he played a second season for Ottawa and moved up into a regular berth on the local line under coach Sam Fox. Retired after a long career with Brewer's Retail. Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Friday, January 17, 2003 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service in the chapel on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Interment Pinecrest Cemetery. After several years of living with the effects of a stroke, George Ryan died peacefully on January 16, 2003 at the Perley Rideau Veterans Hospital at the age of 91. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Irene, daughters Marjorie (George Charlton) and Wendy (Erik Scobie), and son Michael, as well as three grandchildren (Laura, David, Robbie) and two great-grandchildren (Katie, Christina). He was predeceased by his first wife Marion Coldwell, daughter Dixie and son-in-law Earl Weatherall, as well as brothers Arthur, Dan and Freddie, and sisters Bessie, Pearl, and Jennie. He had a long interesting career starting as a young boy working in the Digby sawmill, next having a successful grocery store on the main street in Digby, then 20 years in the RCAF having survived a bombing in England. Upon discharge he worked as a civilian for the RCMP and then had his own electronics business until he retired. He loved to play golf and poker and missed these hobbies after he had his stroke. Special thanks to all the wonderful caregivers George had over the 7 years he battled his stroke. Friends may visit at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry 1200 Ogilvie Rd at Aviation Parkway on Saturday, January 18, 2003 from 9:30 am until service time in the chapel at 11 am. LEGERE, MARY (GRETA) ELIZABETH The death of Mary (Greta Elizabeth Legere of New Avon, NB occurred on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at the Queen's North Health Complex, Minto, NB. Born in South Minto, NB, she was the daughter of the late Bruce and Elsie. Greta is survived by four daughters Hazel Roser of Oshawa, ON, Rena Legere of Fredericton NB, Jeannie Legere and Betty Wheaton (Darrell) both of Minto, NB; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; several half brothers and sisters. In addition to her parents Greta was predeceased by her husband Luke and two grandsons Danny and Trevor. Resting at the Minto Funeral Home, 327-3490 with visiting Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 12:00 Noon January 18, 2003 from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Minto with Father P. Ayant maitrise la langue Ojibway, il passa la majeure partie de sa vie missionnaire aupres des autochtones au nord du Manitoba et en Ontario. He began as a Brother from 1933 to 1944 then was ordained a priest on June 18, 1950 at the Scholasticate at Lebret, SK. Having mastered the Ojibway language, he spent the major part of his missionary life among the Native People in Northern Manitoba and Ontario. His last obedience was for St. Ambroise, MB in 1984 until 1996 when he retired at Casa Bonita, St. Boniface, MB. TARBUSH, MARTHA MARGARET ALBERTA (MARG) Passed away suddenly at her home in Victoria, BC on January 9th, 2003 in her 86th year. She was born in Toronto, Ontario on the 27th day of April, 1917, the only child of the late Albert & Edith Couch. Marg was a lifelong resident of Angus and Barrie until the early 1980’s when she moved to Victoria, BC. Predeceased by Her loving husband, Bernard, in 1978. She was much loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Survived by daughters Miriam Krause (Barton), Carol Berard (Bill) and Sharron Carpenter (Bill). Grandchildren Deborah Handy (Walter), Cheryl Krause, Michele Bowman (Rick), Scott Carpenter (Katrina), and Nicole Desroches (Pat). Great grandchildren Michelle, Christopher, Melissa, Kate, Danielle, Joshua, and Alexus. Great great grandchildren Simon, Jessica, and Heather. Marg was a cheerful, loving person with many friends. She played golf, was an active member of the Cedar Hill Art Club in Victoria, and a past member of the Barrie Art Club. She had recently produced a quilt for each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, 13 in all. She wished to be cremated with interment beside her husband in Angus, Ontario. Dr. Edward W. National Archives of Canada Canadian Museum of Civilization Passed away peacefully at the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre on January 15, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer. Ed was born in Montreal in 1940, and received his Ph.D from McGill University. He was the leading historian and expert on the Finnish-Canadian Community and Finland. Beloved husband of Liisa (nee Ahokoski), and brother of Elna Hardie. Cousins in Finland and Canada. Thank you to all the wonderful staff on the 5th floor at the Ottawa General Hospital and the wonderful staff at the Elisabeth Bruyere. Also many thanks to the Oncologist of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre who looked after Ed for the past three and a half years. Thanks to Ed's many former colleagues from the National Archives of Canada for all their support and kindness. Heartfelt thanks to our friends, Roger, Kay, Bev, Nancy, Klaus, Judy, Carl, Yvette, Janet, Angela, Harry and Leo for all their help and kindness. BLAIS, Anna On Tuesday, January 14, 2003, Mrs. Anna Blais of Edmonton went to be with her Lord and Saviour at the age of 93 years. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughter Ada Clelland; son Fidele (Helga) Blais; grandson Ken (Karen) Griffiths; sisters Nellie and Katie; Helga's family: Bernie, Myrna, Brett and Maureen; and numerous other relatives. Anna was predeceased by her husband in 1971; also an infant daughter and son. She was a kind and gentle mother who served her Lord through kindness, generosity and compassion to others. COMEAU, GERTRUDE M.-At her residence on January 14, 2003 Miss Gertrude Mary Comeau of the Rocmaura Nursing Home and formerly of Fairville. Born in Richibucto N.B. she was the daughter of the late Felix and Mary (Richard) Comeau. Miss Comeau was a resident of Saint John since 1917 and was the last surviving member of her imêmediate family. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Parish and a member of the C. W. L. of St. Rose. She is survived by Nieces Thersa (Bourque) Stauffer and Rita (Bourque) Duplessis. Resting at the Castle "Fallsview" Funeral Home 309 Lancaster Ave (634-1701). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church on Friday January 17, 2003 at 10 am. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring.
