OLDFIELD, David L. M.D. David passed away peacefully at Markham Stouffville Hospital on June 5, 2002 with his family at his bedside. He was 79 years old. He had experienced 32 years of various medical adventures which he accepted with his usual lighthearted manner. David was a pilot in the RAF during WWII after which time he attended Guy’s Hospital Medical School (London, UK). Upon graduation in 1954 he served an internship and then worked as a general practitioner for several years. In 1959 he joined the RCAMC and came to Canada to serve as a medical officer with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada. In 1965 he was offered a residency at University of Toronto in the Department of Otoiaryngology. Upon completion of his residency in 1970 David suffered his first medical problem in the form of a ruptured cerebral aneurysm. Despite losing many of his skills he never lost his sense of humour which stayed with him until the end. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Gladys, daughters Stephanie, Rachel, Maria (Gabe), Megan (Joe) and son Shane (Jane), As well as his sister June Hamilton in Belfast, Ireland. His grandchildren, Alexa, Julia, Max and Olivia will not forget their Oupa. Heartfelt thanks to all the staff on 3C and 1C at Markham Stouffville Hospital for their superlative care. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation (905-472-7059). Cremation has taken place. Joseph R. Webster Retired RCMP Constable Suddenly due to complications of Diabetes Joe passed away on May 8, 2002. He is survived by his parents Joe and Betty Webster (nee Joyce) and sister Dody Guindon (Denis). Joe was predeceased by his sister Cathy and his grandparents George and Dorothy Joyce. He was born in Korbecke, Germany. He attended High School in Soest and Lahr Germany and LaSalle Secondary School, Kingston. He was accepted into the RCMP on February 15, 1974 as a bilingual Constable and retired on April 15, 1994. He served in Val Dor, Quebec, Sault Ste Marie and Ottawa Ontario. He completed many RCMP qualification courses. Joe enjoyed drawing cartoons and received an award from the Rideau Valley Art Show. He played the guitar and drums in the Church band while in Depot Training, Regina, Sask. Joe also played the organ at his Sister’s wedding. Joe will be sadly missed by his niece Danielle and husband Alastair Ross and nephew Guy Guindon. Also by Aunt Beth and Uncle Bob Simpson and his cousins Roberta Johnston, George and wife Shelly and Jim Simpson. Funeral was held May 11, 2002 with Rev. Bruce Sweet officiating. Elle fut prédécédée par 4 soeurs: Thérèse Paquette, Éva Leroux, Marguerite Gauthier et Rose-Alma Lalonde et 1 frère, Joseph Gauthier, ainsi que 2 beaux-frères: Roger Paquette et Wilfrid Lalonde. On peut imaginer à quel point Marie-Jeanne aurait été fière de voir l'amour et le soutien exprimés autour de sa famille lors de son décès. (nee Hutchinson) Surrounded by her family, Liz passed away peacefully on June 5, 2002 in her 82nd year. Predeceased by her beloved, Ted. Dear mother of Tom (Barb), Ian (Anne), Rob (Daniele) and Hugh (Jennifer). Nan to Jennifer, Kristian, Brendan, Molly, William, Colin, Katie. Liz is lovingly remembered by her brothers-and-sisters-in-law, her nieces and nephews and in the hearts of many, many dear friends in Toronto, Burlington, Ottawa, Vancouver and elsewhere. Her active life included studying voice and piano at the Julliard School, seven exciting years living in Brazil, successfully tackling a mid-life career in Ottawa real estate and raising four angelic sons. Youthful summers in Algonquin Park inspired a love of the Canadian wilderness, and Liz continued canoeing in the Park until recently. Throughout her life, she made time to help wherever she was needed, most recently as a volunteer for the Toronto Symphony and Mission Air. We deeply appreciate all those who gave their time to give her the gift of independence over the last few years. Thank you. Sophie Basaraba It is with great sorrow the family of Sophie Basaraba announce her sudden passing Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. Sophie was born Feb. 1, 1932 in Gardenton, Man. to Kost (Jack) and Wasylka Melnychuk. She moved to Fort Frances as a young woman. She was united in marriage to John Basaraba on Feb. 3, 1951. Over the years, Sophie worked as a waitress at numerous cafes and restaurants in the area, and later at Rainycrest Home for the Aged. She loved to spend time with her family, especially with her children and grandchildren. Sophie also enjoyed spending time in her kitchen, listening to Elvis, camping, and spending time in the camper with Judy. She leaves behind her husband, John; daughter, Kathy and her husband, Greg Downing; sons, Ken and wife, Karen, Kim and wife, Carla, and Carey and wife, Tammie; and grandchildren, Troy, Shannon, Kevin, and Scott Basaraba, and Johnathan Downing. Also surviving are her brothers, Nick Melnychuk and wife, Olga, and Alec Melnychuk; sister, Mary and husband, Ilio Gushulak; brother-in-law, Pete Basaraba and wife, Polly; sister-in-law, Helen Kitzul; numerous nieces and nephews; very special friend, Heather Thompson; and close neighbours and friends, Lawrence and Judy Carter and their children. September 21, 1907 - May 31, 2002 Isabel Gould dedicated her life to her family, teaching and the art of music. Daughter of the late Isaac James Jr. Gould and Hughina McPherson of Uxbridge, Ontario. Sister of the late Jack (Amelia) Gould, Aunt to Johnny, Murray (Sarah) and Darcy, Great Aunt to Jessie, Sara, Morgan and Liam. Isabel was always a central figure in the lives of the people who loved her. Isabel's distinguished career in music spanned more than 70 years. A gifted visual artist, vocalist and pianist, the Royal Canadian Conservatory honored her with the first place award for women's singing in 1950. Isabel loved fostering the talents of her students - particularly children. Over the decades, she taught hundreds of students in towns across Canada including Cupar, Saskatchewan, Woodbridge, Ontario, Ottawa and Manotick, Ontario. She was also an active member of the Ottawa Music Club and the Woodroffe United Church choir. Isabel's music touched the lives of the people who knew her. As a young woman during the 1920s and 1930s, she regularly played piano with the dance band in Cupar. In later years, her music was an essential part of family Christmas Eve traditions. Christmas will not be the same without her. Peacefully on May 31, 2002 Isabel's music came to an end. She will be dearly missed. Growing up in Sudbury he joined the Scout movement, becoming a leader and winning the King Scout award. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. and served in England, Italy, and France. After the war he went to work for Bill Muirhead at Muirhead Stationers and retired in 1987. Walter was a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge and a devoted member of the Church of the Resurrection. Dad was a special father who loved his family dearly. He was gentle, compassionate and caring, always available to offer advice and words of encouragement. Dad made good times even better with his sense of humour. Laughter to him was good medicine and all who knew him were uplifted by his jovial nature and quick wit. Dad enjoyed the simple things in life and spent hours outdoors communing with nature. One would have thought he actually talked to birds and chipmunks. He loved his yard and his garden and tended his vegetables with caring hands. Dad was extremely knowledgeable and could devise ways and means to solve most problems. He was innovative and clever and people admired his vivid imagination and creativity. Dad was fun to be with and enjoyed people. He thought the world of Mom and went out of his way to make her happy. She authored the play "Stars in the Sky Morning" also "A Tale of the Hardships of the Women on the Northern Peninsula of Nfld." Rhonda also travelled extensively living and working in London, England, Africa and Sri Lanka. Rhonda will be remembered by her family and friends for her exuberance for life. SOLSKI, Bronek "Bruno" In loving memory of Bronek "Bruno" Solski, 79 years of Sudbury who passed away Thursday morning, June 6th, 2002 at the SRH - Memorial Site. Born & raised in Coniston and married Stella (Pozdyk) in 1951 in Sudbury. Bronek was a life resident of the Sudbury area. He worked in the Transportation Dept. at INCO having 43 years service retiring in 1984. A Roman Catholic he belonged to Holy Trinity Church. In his younger years he played in the Coniston Marching Band. A keen outdoorsman he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed baseball and he was an avid Blue Jays fan. Bruno was devoted to his loving family especially his grandchildren who fondly called him "GeGe". He took a great interest and pride in their activities and accomplishments. CSJ (Sister Theodosia) Sister Pauline entered into her eternal rest at St. Joseph's Motherhouse on June 5, 2002 in the 68th year of her religious life. Left to mourn her loss are her sisters in the Congregation, her sister Joan (Joseph O'Neil) of Tallahassee, Florida, her brother Lorne Maher of Gatineau, Quebec, and her sister-in-law Pauline Davies Maher of Meaford, Ontario, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, friends and former students in Killaloe, Barry's Bay, Renfrew, Douglas, Quyon, Sheenboro, St. Joseph's, Allumette Island, Chapeau and Petawawa, where she ministered. Sister Pauline is the daughter of the late Thomas Maher of Lindsay, Ontario and Ida McTeer of Chatsworth, Ontario. She is predeceased by her sister, Helen Maher, and brothers, Charles, Thomas and John. She was involved with the Theresians of Canada since 1967. On her retirement from the teaching profession, Sister worked at St. Joseph's Centre, Chapeau, Quebec where she was organist in St. Alphonsus' Church for 17 years. Resting at St. Joseph's Motherhouse, Pembroke, Friday, June 7th from 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. In the Chapel with interment at St. Columba's Cemetery, Pembroke.
