We celebrate the life of Ernest Quinn (of Kingston), husband of the late Iva Duncan, after a short struggle with cancer. This strong man celebrated 90 years after a full and harty life. Peacefully at Rosewood Retirement Home on Saturday, February 16, 2002. His strength, hardwork and perserverance are the legacy he leaves to his family. He will be missed by his Ottawa family, his only daughter Catherine, her son Bryan (Tara) Hetherington, her daughter Kimberly (Brian) Appel, seven special great-grandkids Katelin, Stephanie and Chad Hetherington, Aaron, Zachary, Alyssa and Hayley Appel and his nieces and nephews. Died peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at her home in the Glebe Centre. Born in 1906, the second child of William and Annie Eldorado, Hastings County, Ontario. Ena was predeceased by her sister Isobel, brothers Moore and Leonard, and her husband, Frederick. A musician and teacher, Ena served as organist for St. Bartholomew's Church, Bannockburn, before moving to Ottawa in 1952. Graduate of the Ontario Hospital, Whitby (Class of 1934) she worked in her profession, notably the Ottawa Civic Hospital, Department of Psychiatry. Her calm and generous disposition, sparked with humour and fun, remained steadfast through years of illness and encourages all people to hold to the goodness of life, the foundations of family and the love of Almighty God. Ena is mourned by her dear sister, Margaret Long, her son and daughter-in-law Sandford and Dixie, daughters Margaret and Anne and son-in-law Sol Shmelzer, grandchildren Cynthia and David Powell and family, Terence and Lisa and family, David and Peter, and nieces and nephews. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Miriam (nee Arrington) Block on February 17 at Chateau Westmount. After ninety-five and a half years of a very full life, her presence will be sorely missed by her daughter, Victoria, her son-in-law, David Astrof, her brother, Robert Arrington, niece, nephews and many friends. David and Victoria thank the staff at Chateau Westmount, her caregiver Karen Lapointe and especially Alma White whose wonderful care (and cooking) made Miriam's last years so good. Miriam's love for life was contagious. She inspired us all with her various creative pursuits: poetry, art, music, cooking - and by her undying love for her husband of forty-six years, Victor Richard Block who passed away in 1991. Daniel James “Dan” Foran It is with immense sadness that the children of Daniel “Dan” Foran Jr. announce his passing. Dan, 65, of 616 Church St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away suddenly Friday, Feb. 15, 2002 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances. He was born Dec. 27, 1936 in Fort Frances to the late Daniel Joseph Sr. and Olive Foran. Dan attended St. Mary’s School and Fort Frances High School. As a boy and young man, Dan loved hockey. He spent hours playing and practising at local rinks and in his own back yard. Dan excelled at the game. In 1953, at the age of 16, he was invited to the Detroit Red Wing Jr.’s spring training camp in Brandon, Man. The exceptional left-winger was noticed for his talents by “Pops” McLean (a trainer for Detroit) and was asked to return that fall to try out for a spot on the team. Unfortunately, that summer, after receiving a full-time job at Sand Island Falls, Dan opted for full-time work rather than a part-time hockey career. He started working at Sand Island Falls on the “Gator.” From 1954 to 1958, he worked on the “393” and the “340,” winding up his lake career towing logs from the upper Rainy Lake to the mill in Fort Frances on the “Hallett.” He started working for Ontario Minnesota on Aug. 4, 1958. He worked for Boise Cascade for 30 years, finishing his career as a Class ‘A’ pipefitter. He enjoyed working on the pipe gang and made many lifelong friends. He was well-respected by union members for his strong convictions. On Oct. 27, 1958, Dan married Margaret “Joyce” Fagerdahl. Dan and Joyce had four children, Carla, Dana, Thomas, and Janine. Dan spent many happy hours at his “cottage” on Rocky Islet Bay, fishing and relaxing with his family and friends. His pride and joy were his children and his grandchildren. Dan was predeceased by one brother, Donald “Butch” Dault; and one sister, Emma, and her husband, Leonard Thorne. Daniel is survived by his four children, Carla and husband, Gordon Galbraith, of Fort Frances, Ont., Dana and husband, Robert Lynn Cain, of Devlin, Ont., and Thomas Foran, and Janine and husband, Ernest Cousineau, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; and six grandchildren, Joseph, Sasha, and Jon-Paul Galbraith, Jill Foran, and Nathan and Daniel Cousineau. Also surviving are one brother, Pat Foran, and sister-in-law, Loretta Foran of Fort Frances, Ont.; sister-in-law, Harriet Dault of International Falls, Mn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A vigil service will take place Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances, with Fr. Eugene Whyte O.M.I. officiating. Interment will take place in Devlin Cemetery in Devlin at a later date. Honourary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Peacefully, in hospital, on Friday February 15, 2002. Claude Whisselle in his 59th year. Beloved fiance of Collette Varney. Father of Jeannine, stepfather of Marian. Loving grandfather of Martin, Sarah, step-grandfather of Jean-Paul, Chris, Sylvain, Steven. Also survived by 8 brothers and 6 sisters. Predeceased by his sister Claudette. Survived by many relatives and friends. Friends may pay their respects at Racine, Robert & Gauthier Funeral Home and Chapel, 180 Montreal Rd. on Sunday February 17, 2002 from 2 to 5 p.m., 7 to 10 p.m. and Monday after 10 a.m. until service time at 2 p.m. in chapel.
