Joseph Emile Pion, of Hearst Death: January 28th, 2002 Funeral services for longtime Hearst resident and retired businessman Joseph Émile Pion, 80, of 1401 Prince St. were held Jan. 31, 2002. He died Jan. 28 at Notre-Dame Hospital following a brief illness. Born May 15, 1921 in Ste-Cécile-de-Milton, Quebec, he resided in Verner, Cochrane and Kapuskasing before coming to Hearst in 1951. A master cheesemaker at the Hearst Farmers coop until the late 1950s, he then opened his downtown Emile's Groceries (now Hearst Corner Store) until 1973. A fourth-degree Knight of Columbus and member of the Club soleil des aîné-e-s seniors club, he enjoyed camping and travelling. He was described as one who loved life, and who liked to laugh and make others laugh. He was predeceased by a son Raymond Pion of Hearst in 1960, a daughter Marie-Jeanne Desbois of Sudbury in 1999, and son-in-law Roger Desbois of Sudbury in 1987. He leaves: his wife Malvina (née Crépeau) Pion of Hearst; sons Maurice (Lilianne) of Cochrane and Paul-Émile (Linda) Pion of Hearst; and daughters Colette (Ronald) Charbonneau of Sudbury and Suzanne (Nic) Poirier of Ottawa. Also surviving are his sister Lucille Gazaille of Grandby, Que., brothers Aurèle of Montreal, and Aimé, Laurent and Albert Pion, all of Grandby, nine granddaughters and three grandsons, and seven great grandchildren. Rev. Rémi Lessard officiated the morning service at the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral. Interment will be at the Monseigneur Grenier Cemetery. Funeral director was the Salon Lafrance Funeral Home. The family requests that commemorative donations be made to the Foyer des Pionniers Nursing Home. Published on February 6th, 2002

Born in 1945 in Cape Town, South Africa. Died peacefully on February 4, 2002 after a valiant and courageous battle with an aggressive cancer. She will be sadly missed by her husband and soulmate Ronald. Before her illness last Fall she was employed by the law firm Gowling, Lafleur & Henderson as a Legal Assistant. The members of this firm provided Isabel with an enormous amount of support, kindness and compassion. Thanks goes to the doctors who attended to her as well as nurses who tended to her needs, especially those at the Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital, whose care and compassion were beyond the call of duty and service. A very special thank you to Dr. N. Matuk, Isabel's friend and doctor of many years whose care and compassion and love gave Isabel an immeasurable amount of encouragement, peace and comfort. Ed Sivonen It is with deep regret the family of Ed Sivonen of Fort Frances, ON announce his passing on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 at the age of 78. Ed will be sadly missed by his six children, Gary (Susan) Sivonen of Winnipeg, Nancy (Brian) Allan of Devlin, Judy (Doug) Sivonen of Fort Frances, MaryAnn Christianson of International Falls, MN, Terry Sivonen of Victoria, B.C., and Tina (Jamie) Roth of Fort Frances; and his seven stepchildren, Leonard Maki, Karen Maki, Sharon Maki, Evelyn Fraser, Albert Maki, Ron Maki and Bradley Maki. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his canine friend and companion, Sheena. Ed was born April 23, 1923 at the family farm on Frog Creek Road, where he resided until the time of his death. He lived all of his life in the Rainy River District and led a full life with many interests. Ed was a self-employed farmer, logger and trapper. He also was employed by Boise Cascade in 1952 for over 33 years until his retirement in 1985. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Ed was predeceased by his common-law wife, Betty Maki; his parents, Arvid and Manta Sivonen; an infant sister, Maria; and his grandson, Eric John Sivonen. Visitation was held Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with funeral service following at 2 p.m. Rev. Marietta Marshall officiated, with a private family interment afterwards at Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. Friends joined Ed’s family for lunch after the services at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 in Fort Frances. Pallbearers were Gary Sivonen, Terry Sivonen, Jamie Roth, Brian Allan, Leonard Maki and Doug DeBernardeaux. Honourary pallbearers were Jack Smeeth, Bert Smeeth, Arnie Lahti, Steve Caul, Wilf Lockman, Raimo Tryvainen and Bob Gadd. Raoul Rondeau Raoul Rondeau, 2-14 McPherson St., died at Sensenbrenner Hospital in Kapuskasing, died on January 31, 2002. He was 73 years old. He was born on March 19, 1928 in Hearst. He worked as a Turbine Attendant. He enjoyed his HAM radio and riding his Harley Davidson. He was also active in the UNO Club. He is predeceased by: his parents Hermas and Joséphine ; two sisters; Cécile Parker, Jeanne Cormier; one brother Wilfrid. He is survived by: one daughter Danielle Rondeau of Ottawa; one son Marc (Lauren) of Ottawa; one sister Adèle Begin of Hearst; one grand daughter Cynthia Lachance of Barrie. The funeral services will be held at he Guenette Chapel on February 7, at 10 am. Rev. Fernand Villeneuve will perform the service. Cremation took place at the Hillcrest Crematorium, Matheson.

Born in February, 1896 in Cardiff, Wales, Matilda lived most of her life in Bristol, England and emigrated to Canada when she was 82. The widow of William Payne, she shared her love with her 4 children, Muriel Price (Ottawa), Phyllis Harper (Ivy Bridge, England), Bill Payne (Carlisle, England), and Allan Payne (Bristol, England), 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grand-children. We wish to express our gratitude to the residents, staff and volunteers at New Orchard Lodge who made her last days more comfortable. There will be no visitation.
