Cousin of Anne Marie Johnson, Charles and Marie Graham and John Brundage. Godmother to Barbara Johnston and long-time family friend of Anne (Johnston) Browne and Stuart Johnston. She will be sadly missed by Suzanne (Kinsman) Carlaw, Stephen and Sandy Kinsman, Rodney Holden, Tina Edgar and many other close friends. A private burial will be held in Hudson, Quebec. Lovingly remembered by his wife, Elizabeth, his children, Frederick and his wife Monique, Viki and her husband Anthony, and Robbie. Affectionately known as Grandaddy by his grandchildren Christine and Nicholas, and as Papy by Sascha and Bianca. Beloved brother of Pauline Amy Grose of Calgary, beloved uncle of Mary Carol Fields of Simi Valley, California, and Sue Ellen of Calgary. Also affectionately remembered by Sandra Charlene of England, as well as many nieces and nephews. A special mention to the many friends he made during his 37 years on the road in northern and eastern Ontario as a Manufacturers' Agent. Friends of Dad and of the family are welcomed to attend a gathering at the home of his son, Frederick, 1590 Dixie Street in Ottawa, on Sunday, January 27, between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. As per Dad's wishes, he will be cremated in a private ceremony, and his remains interned with those of his mother, Olive Dorothy, and father, Colonel Rupert Bland, in London, Ontario. After a courageous struggle with cancer, Andy passed away on January 24, 2002 in his seventy-eighth year. He leaves behind his devoted wife and partner, Magdalena "Madie", whom he adored; his five children Andrew (Lise), Ronald (Linda), Brian (Jane), Nancy and Thomas; his three step-children, Eric Kilbertus (Joan), Ellen Hersey (Scott) and Gary Kilbertus (Carol), sixteen grandchildren Nicholas, Julia, Andreas, Alexander, Jennifer, Kimberley, Stephanie, Christina, Laura, Paul, Jaclyn, Brent, Kelly, Brenna, Reed, Derek who will miss him dearly. Andy unfailingly showed respect to everyone he met and was always kind and generous to anyone who needed his support. His legion of devoted family and friends is testament to his strength and character and continual good humour. He gave out of love, and without expectation, and everyone who came to know Andy was a better person for the experience. He loved sports and was an avid golfer and long time member of Wyldewood G.C. He spent most of his adult life in Canada except for his service during the Second World War in the United States Navy. He studied at St. F.X. University in Antigonish, Queens University in Kingston, Ont. and Chapel Hill in South Carolina, U.S.A. He taught at St. F.X.; Loyola University, Montreal and retired after 25 years at University of Ottawa in 1986. He is survived by brothers, Elmer (Carol), Dartmouth; Roy (Joan), Dartmouth; Rubin (Irene), Prince Edward Island; sisters, Mary Ellen "Nellie" Collins, Duxbury, Mass.; Muriel (Pete) George, Dartmouth; Jean (Conrad) Baldwin, Gays River; sister-in-law, Mary Gallant, Glace Bay; numerous nieces and nephews. Companion of the Order of Canada One of the truly great men of Canadian diplomacy, has died of a stroke in Ottawa on Thursday, January 24, 2002 at the age of 85. Born in 1916 in Andover, New Brunswick, Ed Ritchie graduated from Mount Allison and went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Assigned to the British Ministry of Economic Warfare in Washington, in 1941 he married the love of his life, Gwen Perdue, of British Columbia. Following the war, he joined Canada's Department of External Affairs and was seconded to various assignments with the fledgling United Nations and related organizations. There followed a rapid rise through the ranks of External Affairs, with postings in Ottawa, the United Kingdom and the United States. He served as Canada's Ambassador to the United States during the Johnson and Nixon administrations, returning to run the department as the Under Secretary of State for External Affairs. At the height of this remarkable career, in 1974, he was stricken with a heart attack followed by a crippling stroke. To the amazement of his doctors, he recovered sufficiently to serve Canada one more time, as Ambassador to Ireland, before taking a well-earned retirement. His many awards included recognition as the outstanding public servant, the highest rank of Companion of the Order of Canada, and numerous honorary degrees. Over the last quarter century, as his health deteriorated, his mind remained sharp. Finally, despite loving care from the staff at the Glebe Centre Nursing Home over the past few years and of the Neurological Ward of the Ottawa Hospital (General Campus) over the last few days, he passed on following yet another stroke. He was predeceased by his parents, sister and brothers. His is survived by Gwen, his loving wife of more than 60 years; and by his great-grandchildren, Megan and Owen; his grandchildren, Jillian (and Husband Bruce) and Martin (wife Naz), Sarah and Aesop, Kieran and Matthew, Melanie and Heather; and children Gordon (wife Marg), Heather (friend Peter), Donald (wife Susan) and Holly (husband Carie). His family announces with great regret that Dr. Ivan Rival passed away unexpectedly, in Ottawa, on January 22, 2002, of heart failure. He was 54. Words cannot express our shock and sorrow. Ivan was a great father, loving husband, dear friend, software innovator and internationally renowned scientist. Ivan grew up in Hamilton where his parents instilled in him a strong work ethic. He studied mathematics at the University of Manitoba. He not only excelled in his studies, completing his doctorate in 1974, but also participated fully in the political life of the campus. It was in these years that he also acquired a profound interest in the arts, music and literature, an interest he nurtured in himself and in others his entire life. He met his beloved wife, Hetje, in Holland in 1974. It was love at first sight--the two married the same year and grew ever closer over the years. From his early days as a mathematician at the University of Calgary, Ivan quickly became a leader in many fields. Through the international conferences he organized in Banff, he brought the theory of ordered sets into prominence and became a world leader in the field, inspiring a generation of mathematicians. Over the years, Ivan discovered applications of this theory and involved dozens of scientists in this pursuit. He joined the University of Ottawa Computer Science Department in 1986 where he used his exceptional talent in pure science to realize practical applications for a broad public. One of these applications is "Degree Navigator", an innovative software product that combines a sense of esthetics and science and is currently used by over one million people in the academic community. This work led to the founding of DAG, which under his leadership and vision grew to a dynamic and highly respected software company with clients worldwide. DAG specializes in software for the academic world--bringing him back to his academic roots as a successful businessman. Ivan was not just an outstanding scientist and entrepreneur. He also possessed a tremendous ability to inspire and lead many others in turning an idea into a successful reality. He traveled extensively abroad and always brought his family along on a memorable cultural adventure. Together with his wife, he encouraged his children to study hard, to love learning, to adopt a scientific outlook and to be culturally broad-minded -- his presence will forever be felt. Ivan is survived by his wife, Hetje; children, Robert, David and Katia; daughter-in-law, Chantal; and his parents, Edith and Zoltan. Beloved husband of Luella (nee Johns) passed away at home with family on December 9, 2001. "Bill" was born September 22, 1913 in Moose Jaw, SK, began his career in 1940 with CBC - Radio Canada at CBK in Watrous, SK, and transferred to Montreal, PQ in 1943 where he worked until his retirement in 1976. He and Luella returned to Saskatoon in 1977. Bill was a member of the Saskatoon Amateur Radio Club and an active "ham" until November 23. Bill will be missed by his wife of fifty-eight years; son David (Sharon) and their children Hilary and Roxy; daughter Donna and her children Stephen (Nathalie) and Clifford. SZYPER, Jan - Passed away January 23, 2002 at the North Bay General Hospital McLaren Site in his 84th year. Beloved husband of Rita Szyper (nee Fraser) of North Bay. Dear father of Donna Day Hoyle (Kenneth Hoyle) of North Bay and Trina (Arthur Radyk) of Lively. He will be sadly missed by three grandchildren: Christopher Radyk, Alicia Radyk and Dyan Day. Jan was born in Poland, served in the Polish Navy during WWII and emigrated to Canada in 1951. He worked at the Dover Turnbull Elevators in Toronto for 33 years.
