BROCK-SMITH, Mary Alma Mary Alma Brock-Smith passed into heaven, Sunday, October 18, 2009 in Victoria, B.C., Canada, at the remarkable age of 101. She was born February 21, 1908 in Concorde, Massachusetts, to Hugh Sheasgreen and Alice Elhatton. The family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where Alma attended Notre Dame de Sion. She went on to study music under the tutelage of Lyell Gustin, Edwin Hughes, Jeanette Durno, Emanuel Bay and Percy Grainger. As a concert pianist, Alma performed with the Saskatoon Symphony, as well as Stanford University, California, and recitals in Vancouver, Seattle and San Francisco. While in San Francisco she married Mark Requa Harrington, and gave birth to her only child, Garth Harrington, who survives her, living with his wife Rosemary in Medford, Oregon. After long term professorships at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the University of California, Berkeley, Alma remarried Harding St. John Brock Smith and returned to Canada. Alma emerged from her performing career remarkably prepared to teach, train and coach others, who in her words "carry on the work, " joining the faculty at the University of Manitoba and the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and serving as a visiting professor at Sir Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario. The testimony of her life is the talent she raised and sent forward to the world of music. This long list contains, among others, the distinguished two-piano duo of Garth Beckett and Boyd McDonald, who performed internationally and earned widespread recognition and honours. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Pepin, of Ontario, Canada and grandchildren and greatgrandchildren in Canada, the United States and Italy. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mary Alma Brock-Smith will be held at St. Andrews Cathedral in Victoria, on Tuesday, November 3 at 2:00 in the afternoon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Gustin House, a provincial heritage property in Saskatoon, and centre of musical history preservation. STELLA EMILY STICKLAND STELLA STICKLAND, born August 10, 1918 on the family homestead at Broadview, Saskatchewan, passed away gently at Sunset Extendicare Home, on October 30, 2009 at the age of 91 years. Debilitated by arthritis in her last years, she has gone to a better place to be reunited with her beloved husband, Leonard; son, Gary; parents, William and Edith Hunter; two brothers, Archie and Bill Hunter; sister, Grace Koepke; and many close friends. Stella was a true daughter of the prairies, growing up in Broadview, and living always in Saskatchewan. It's been said that as a child she could run across a field, jump on a horse and ride bareback! As a young woman she attended Regina Normal School, and taught at Inglesfield School, (near Maryfield) and at Govan. At Maryfield she met her future husband, Leonard, and married him in 1944. They moved to Regina, and raised their family in their Cameron Street home. During their married life, Mom worked at RH Williams during WWII, and then became a stay-at-home mom until the middle 60's when she embarked on several new occupations including managing the Melodyland Music store (a co-owned family venture), and worked as an employment counselor at Canada Manpower. To each of these jobs, as to raising her family, Mom brought great commitment, dignity, high expectations of herself, and a sense of privilege and grace! Stella and Len were active in the life of St. Peter's Anglican Church, where she taught Sunday School, belonged to and sometimes presided over the Mothers' Union, and Anglican Church Women's groups, played the church organ, and sang in the choir. Mom was a gifted pianist, and music was a large part of family life. She and Dad hosted many gatherings of friends in our home, with Mom playing while guests sang all the old familiar songs. Gatherings at our home were always well attended and loved! Stella was a clever, loving, intelligent woman, fiercely supportive of her husband, children and their families. She had a wonderful smile, deep affection for all the people and things that she loved, and lived her life with purpose, dignity and grace! She will be missed by friends and family who survive her including daughter, Sharon (Ed) Waddington, of Kanata Ontario; son, Eugene Stickland of Calgary; Tom (Alison) Stickland of Regina; and grandchildren Hanna Stickland, Dr. Ashley Waddington (with whom she proudly shared a birthday), Geoff (Silvana) Waddington; and greatgranddaughter, Ellena Waddington. We will remember Stella at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3337 15 Avenue, Regina on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 11:00 am. Flowers are most graciously declined. TREMBLAY (Mme Jacqueline Asselin) Le 2 novembre 2009, est décédée à la Résidence des Années d'Or, à l'âge de 88 ans et 6 mois, Mme Jacqueline Asselin, épouse de feu M. Médéric Tremblay, demeurant à la Résidence des Années d'Or, autrefois rue St-Dominique, Jonquière. La famille a accueilli parents et amis à la Résidence funéraire du Saguenay, 2580, rue St-Dominique Jonquière. Les funérailles ont eu lieu le vendredi 6 novembre 2009 à 11 h à l'église St-Dominique. Après les funérailles, Mme Asselin a été incinérée et les cendres ont été déposées au columbarium St-Dominique. Elle était la fille de feu Mme Alice-Hermance Tremblay et de feu M. Albert Asselin. COLE, Paul Emerson of Wiarton and formerly of Windsor, peacefully at home, on Saturday, October 31, 2009, in his 79th year. Beloved husband and best friend of Sue, and cherished father of Dr. Chris Cole of Belle River, Kathy (Reg) Prince of Zephyr, Jennifer (Van) Quinn of Newmarket, and Geoff (Susan) Cole of St. Thomas, and stepfather of Vanessa (Jason) Palmer of Clarksburg and Drew (Briana) Shankman of Guatemala. Special grandpa to Kevin, Conrad, and Cory Cole; Chelsea and Brandi Prince; Bridget and Charlotte Quinn; and Andrew and Harrison Cole. He will be sadly missed by his mother Joan Cole, brother David Cole (Jim Wickens), and sisters Bonita Cole and Sylvia (Stephen) Shanfield of Windsor. Paul was predeceased by his father Emerson Cole, brother Gary Cole, and first wife Jane Warren. Paul retired in 1994 from the Bruce County Board of Education following a very successful thirty-seven year career in education. He and his young family moved to the Peninsula in 1968. Paul was principal of Bruce Peninsula District School, Wiarton District High School, and Saugeen District Secondary School before being appointed to his most recent position as Superintendent of Human Resources. There will be a service to celebrate and honour Paul's life, at the Water View Resort, 501201 Grey Road 1, Wiarton, on Saturday, November 7, 2009. The family will receive visitors starting at 12:30 p.m. with the service to start at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception. Cremation has taken place. HOLDEN VERBURG, Anita On October 31, 2009, Anita Holden Verburg passed away at the age of 74 years. She is survived by nieces and nephews in England; Adrianne (Damian) Heywood, Anthony Colbourne, Christopher (Gladys) Colbourne, Martin (Catherine) Holden and Erika (Andrew) Holden and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She will be missed and fondly remembered by her step-daughters and their families, Jennifer (Ray) Fennema and children, Sarah, Rachel, Joel, Aaron, Stephanie, Kaden and Connor; and Sandra (Michael) Kowalenko and children, Rebekah, Hannah, Esther and Abigail, Elizabeth (Rodney) French; and other friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Daisy Holden; her sister Jean Colbourne; her brother, Frank Holden and her niece, Debbie Colbourne. Anita June Holden was born in Birmingham, England to Daisy and Walter Holden on December 9, 1934. She had an older sister, Jean and older brother, Frank. After she completed her BA in London, England, Anita taught French at a convent in Bournemouth and at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Following this, she moved to Hamilton, Ontario and obtained her MA at McMaster University in 1963. On September 1, 1964 she arrived in Edmonton where she taught French at the University of Alberta until her retirement in 1992. In the early 1980's, Anita brought her mother over from England to live with her and lovingly devoted herself to her care until her mom died in 1987. After retirement Anita volunteered weekdays teaching ESL to new immigrants until she was no longer able due to the progression of her illness. She was an intelligent woman who loved travel, languages, books, gardening, cooking, a glass of sherry, a cigarette, spending time with friends and family. She was often helping others in a quiet way. Words cannot express our appreciation for the tender and dignified care that Anita received for the past 22 months at Devonshire Care Center. She felt loved. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 5 at 2:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Howard & McBride Westlawn, 16310 Stony Plain Road, Edmonton. KURZ , Edward "Eddie" Carl June 24, 1924 October 29, 2009 Eddie Kurz long time resident of Calgary, formerly of Moose Jaw, SK, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Eddie was predeceased by his wife Helen in 2003. He leaves to mourn his three children: John (Marie), Danny (June), and Glenda; grandchildren: Blake, Dustan (Lori), Robin (David), Reece, Tyler, Danny Jr. (Naomi) and Scott; three great-grandchildren: Maya, James and Sadie; as well as his sister Winnie and brother Willice. THOLENAER , Bruce Arnold March 28, 1958 - October 31, 2009 Bruce Tholenaer, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the age of 51 years. Bruce was born and raised in Calgary. Bruce loved Celtic music and had just returned home from a ten day trip to Cape Breton's Celtic Colors with his buddy Ron. Bruce was happiest when he was tinkering around in his garage with his friends and a bottle of Alexander Keith's. He will be missed greatly by his loving wife of thirty years Delee and by his precious daughters, Amy (Donny) McDuff and April (Jon Moyen), and granddaughter Kiely, who was his pride and joy. He is also survived by his mom Johanna, brother Mike (Veronica), sisters Brenda (Jamie) Scott, Janine, Carolyn, brother Gerald and many nieces and nephews. BLUM, Irene 1948-2009 Irene Blum, of blessed memory, died on November 1, 2009 at 10:25 p.m. in Edmonton. She was born on November 13, 1948 in Bucharest, Romania, the first child of Richard and Martha Blum (nee Guttmann). She immigrated to Israel with her parents at the age of 18 months, and a year later in July 1951, Irene and her parents joined Martha's family in Halifax, Nova Scotia, entering Canada through Pier 21. A year in Wolfville, Nova Scotia saw the birth of her brother Alexander (d. 1983), and in 1955 the family settled in Saskatoon, where Irene and Alexander grew up. Under the influence of her parents, Irene developed a deep appreciation for languages and the arts. At Aden Bowman Collegiate under the guidance of Bob Hinitt, and beyond to university and the professional stage, Irene took her place as an accomplished and sensitive actor. She studied French in Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan, and in Toronto at the University of Toronto where she received her Master of Arts degree in the French Language. She also had an excellent knowledge of German and Romanian. For the last 15 years, Irene fulfilled her calling as an outstanding teacher of French, working for Formation Linguistique Canada, Edmonton Continuing Education, and Metro College, as well as coaching many appreciative private students. She also volunteered on scholarship boards and various community projects. Irene's exceptional aesthetic sensibility allowed her to experience art, theatre, and music to their fullest. Her lively sense of humour endeared her to her many friends and students; her courage and tenacity sustained her to the end. Irene was predeceased by her father in 2004, and her mother in 2007. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at Agudas Israel Synagogue in Saskatoon (715 McKinnon Avenue at the intersection of 10th Street and McKinnon Avenue) with interment at Agudas Israel Cemetery and the Meal of Condolence following at Agudas Israel. BROST, Rose Susan February 18, 1912 - October 29, 2009 Our gracious mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones, at the age of 97. Left to cherish and honour her memory are her siblings, Sister Marcella Haag, Josephine Steffen and Alexander Haag; her children, Noella (Ted+) Rimmer, Mary Lorimer, Angela Cramer, Albert (Louise) Brost, Leo (Denise) Brost, Ida (Ray) Hamans, Diane (Bob) Croteau and Barb (Len) Landry; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
