BUNSE, Howard George April 14, 1919 ~ October 9, 2009 On October 9, 2009 Mr. Howard G. Bunse of Sherwood Park formerly of Edmonton passed away peacefully at the age of 90. DOULL, Ruth On Wednesday, October 7, 2009, Mrs. Ruth Doull passed away at the age of 81 years. She is survived by her loving family, husband, Alexander, of 61 years; three children, David, Terri (Greg) Feihle, and Edith (Gary) Lutz; six grandchildren, Krystal, Allison, and Dylan Feihle, Braden, Larissa, and Riane Lutz; two brothers and two sisters,Cecil (Elenore) Quist, Ted (Isabel) Quist, Dorothy Anderson, and Doreen Peterson; as well as numerous other family and friends. EICHHORN, Elsie Martha (nee Hansen) Elsie, also known as "Granny" formerly of Sangudo, Alberta passed away on October 7, 2009 at the Mayerthorpe Hospital at the age of 95 years. Left to mourn her loss and cherish her memory, her loving family; daughter Grace, sons Ralph (Sharie), Leo and Howard (Carol). Elsie is also survived by nine grandchildren, twenty one great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren as well numerous nieces and nephews. Elsie was predeceased by husband Walter in 1987; her parents, mother, Louise and father, Hans Christian, two sisters, seven brothers, one son-in-law, (Rod) in 1990 and one granddaughter-in-law, (Debbie) in 1998. Elsie was a great mother, and Granny who dearly loved all her family. She had a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her. Funeral services for Elsie will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the Sangudo United Church in Sangudo, Alberta at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Liz Richards officiating. ELASCHUK, William August 18, 1930 - October 7, 2009 William Elaschuk of Vernon, BC, formerly of Edmonton, AB, sadly passed away suddenly at his home at the age of 79. He is survived by and will be dearly missed by his daughter, Sherry Gano; and his son Kevin (Lori). He is predeceased by his loving wife Marge; son Darryl; sisters Anne, Dora, Doris, Lena, Mary, Olga; and brothers George, John, Nick and Steve. STEWART, Barbara Louise Barbara Louise Stewart died in her home on October 5, 2009 from breast cancer. Her family, friends, physicians and caregivers were honoured to serve her. Born in Norman Wells, NWT, Barbara grew up in Edmonton where she became a teacher and helped to establish programs for low vision in the Edmonton Public School system. Her first son has Autism; she became involved in support for people with this disease, becoming president of the Edmonton and later Alberta and Canada Autism societies. This led her to become an advocate the disabled and she was given the Premier's Award of Excellence in 1998 for her work. She was adventurous; it was Barbara who encouraged the family to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. She was involved in issues in her community, and was a benefactor and long-time volunteer for CKUA. Barbara dealt with her cancer and its many problems by joining Breast Friends Dragon Boat Team and living her life to the fullest. A memorial to appreciate and celebrate her joys, her accomplishments, and her life will be held at her home in Edmonton on November 8, 2009 from one to five in the afternoon. SYKES, Amy Ellen Amy passed away peacefully on October 6, 2009 at the age of 99 years. Amy was originally married to William Clark who passed away December of 1932. They had one daughter, Patricia. She remarried William Sykes in November of 1934. They had four children together. CARTER Kenneth Bruce Passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 83 on September 25, 2009 at the Kopernick Lodge. Bruce grew up in Grand Forks, Langley and Trail before attending UBC where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He then went on to article and become a Chartered Accountant. Bruce was a quiet and gentle man who enjoyed the simple things of life; camping, Couples Club, fishing, bowling, gardening, history, and traveling. After retiring in 1981 he and Cecilia spent several months each year relaxing in Arizona or California. He also spent many rewarding years volunteering at Fairhaven Seniors Home before the onset of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Predeceased by both his parents Doug and Ada as well as his older brother Gordon (Lois), Bruce will be greatly missed by his wife Cecilia, son Doug, daughter Lynne, sisters Kath and Irene (Maury) and the many nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 2 pm at West Point Grey United Church, 4595 W 8th in Vancouver, BC, with light refreshments after. CLARKSON Larry Wayne 1939 - 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Wayne Clarkson on October 9, 2009 at the age of 70. Larry was born March 28, 1939 in Creston, B.C. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Lila, his sisters Ruth Scott, Gloria Sharpe (Jim), Norma Smythe and his brother Raymond. He will be dearly missed by the love of his life, Nancy his son Doug, his daughters Lori and Tammy, his eight grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews. Larry is also survived by his sisters Laura (Ralph) and Peggy Daly and his brother Richard (Barbara). Larry was in the construction industry working in numerous areas of B.C., Alberta and the U.S. until he could no longer perform his duties due to his illness. He never lost his sense of humour and was loved and respected by all who knew him. Special thanks to Dr. Tarr of Osoyoos B.C. and the Palliative Care unit at the hospital unit in Oliver. CONNOR Robert (Bob) John January 2nd, 1925 - October 8th, 2009 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and friend Bob, on Wednesday October 8th after a very long and courageously fought illness. Bob was a veteran of WW II. After the war he traveled to Mexico to learn Spanish, on the way he met a young Costa Rican lady on her way home from school in the United States. He decided to continue down to Costa Rica; six months later they were married. In 1957 Bob joined Canadian Pacific Airlines where he enjoyed a long and successful career until his retirement as Vice - President Asia Latin America in 1983. Bob leaves behind his wife of 62 years Yelita, daughters Ellen (Art), JoAnn (Mike) and Patricia (Marek), his grandchildren Stephanie (Dan), Andrew, Timothy (Kristin), Lauren, Marta, and his great grandson Rhys. The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Davidson, Dr. Varelas, pharmacist Paul Sarvari and his staff and most of all to Arlene, Myla, Nancy, Emelin and Allison who provided loving care throughout the years. GOMES Luis Freitas With great sadness we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Luis Freitas Gomes, born on April 04, 1930 in Fazenda das Lajes, Island of Flores, Acores, Portugal. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years Maria Salome, sister Otilia (Antonio) Silva, daughter Maria (Robin) Pillainayagam, daughter Odete (Steve) Bell, son Louis (Monica) Gomes. Luis was a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather to Michelle (Joe), Michael, Jason, Ryan, Christopher, David, Patrick, Mateus and Sophia. Luis was the first of his family to immigrate to Canada in 1956, and was joined by his wife and daughter in 1957. Luis was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Portuguese Canadian Seniors, Portuguese Band and Soccer Team. Luis's generous spirit inspired many, and will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. Our thanks and appreciation to the nurses and medical staff at VGH. Margaret was best known for her strong faith, contagious smile, kind heart, and genuine concern for all persons she came in contact with. WHITON Dorothy May September 17, 1936 - October 8, 2009 Born in Port Alice, BC, Dorothy passed away peacefully in her home on October 8th after battling cancer for four years. Predeceased by Geoffrey Arthur Whiton, her beloved husband of 41 years. Lovingly remembered by her 2 children, Robert Arthur Whiton, James Geoffrey Whiton and her 5 grandchildren (Trevor, Ben, Geoffrey, Ethan and Kae-Lin), daughters-in-law Karen Whiton and Barbara Lee, sister Myra Haraldsen, her husband Ken, nephews Vincent and Sean, relatives back east, Zilpha Whiton, Thomas (wife Janice), Jonathan and Michael Whiton, plus many other friends. Dorothy was a passionate school teacher for over 30 years, many of them at Charles Dickens Elementary School. Musically talented, Dorothy gave her gift of music to hundreds of her school children. Dorothy loved preparing dinners and parties at her home. She made holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas, a special time for everyone. When Rob and Jim were young, she was there for their hockey games, tennis matches, and tournaments. She loved making crafts and was really good at drawing with her grandchildren. She chatted with her daughters-in-law weekly, and enjoyed walking with her friends. She was a gracious wife, amazing mother, and super grandma. We will miss her forever! The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 15th, 11am at St. Stephen's Anglican Church located at 885 - 22nd Street in West Vancouver. He is survived by his loving wife, Diana; daughter, Anita (Jim), son, Christopher and step-daughter, Vicki (Chris); grandchildren, Tiffany, Linden, Savannah, Amanda and Bruce; brother, Arthur of Guelph, Ontario and Sister, Elinor of Dundas, Ontario. KING Kenneth John Born April 1, 1931 in New Westminster, B.C. Passed away October 1, 2009 at Royal Columbian Hospital, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. STENBACK 2009-10-11 Mrs. Wilhemina “Mimi” Edna Mary Stenback (nee Johnson), age 59 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, on Thursday, October 8, 2009. Mimi was born and raised in Fort William and lifelong member of the Fort William First Nation. Survived by her husband Dan Stenback, sons Raymond Carl “Tinker” (Wanda) Bannon and Derek Tourigny; daughters Jacqueline Brady and Margaret Tourigny; mother Agatha MacCall, sister Jennifer Roach; brothers Alfred Johnson, David Johnson, Clifford Johnson, sisters-in-law Rosey Stefanato, Peggy Dromisky, Shirley Hill, Beverly Simms, Gail McEachern, Debra Canelliere; brother-in-law Dave Stenback as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive. MORRELL, Violet Ligate (nee Liptrot) 2009-09-11 It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Violet Ligate Morrell. On Saturday, September 5, 2009, passed away at home with all her family around her. Originally from Bolton, Lancashire, England, and coming to Canada as a child. The family moved to Port Arthur, ON and later settled in Winnipeg, MB. Violet married Sandy Ligate in 1943 and moved to Port Arthur, ON. After his passing, she remarried; Hugh Morrell in 1977. They traveled to Texas and wintered there for the next 18 years. Violet volunteered at an orphanage and school in Mexico. She and Hugh were active in the Kartome Shrine Club. Violet and Hugh moved from Thunder Bay in 1996 to Sarnia to be closer to their two youngest children and their families. Violet will be sadly missed by her children Sandy (Birtha) Ligate of Thunder Bay, Betty (Gary) Smith of Austin, TX, Bill Ligate (Rox-anne Devine) of Sarnia, Barbara Townsend (Harry Donegan) of Sarnia, and her special friends June Livingston and Ralph Clair. Also survived by 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Robert and Lily Liptrot, brothers Eric and Robert and sisters Gladys and Joyce. Also predeceased by husbands Alexander (Sandy) Ligate (1974) and Hugh Morrell (1998) and granddaughter Melissa Lynn Littlefield. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. G. HOWELL 2009-10-11 Sharman Howell, age 59 years of Stardust Crescent, passed away on Friday October 9th, 2009 in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Sharman was born in 1950 to Bud and Pansy Howell in the Dryden Red Cross Hospital on a very cold day in January. She grew up in Dryden, Ontario and at the age of 18 moved to Thunder Bay to train as a nurse. She graduated from the Lakehead Regional School of Nursing in 1971. Her career began as an Operating Room nurse in St. Joseph‘s Hospital, Thunder Bay, followed by a variety of nursing positions at the Dryden District General Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, Port Arthur General Hospital, the VON, and the Community Care Access Centre. At the time of her death, she was a Utilization Coordinator with the CCAC at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. In her younger days she achieved her Grade 8 in piano with the Royal Conservatory of Music, along with three of her sisters. She also sang and played at Music Festivals in the Dryden / Kenora area. She had a love of travelling, visiting Canada and the United States from coast to coast, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, England, Scotland and Wales. She had exciting plans to travel Europe and Africa after her retirement. Her life was fulfilled by being a mother to her sons and watching them grow up. Later in life she met the person she had waited for all her life, Patrick Kunza, and they had eight wonderful years together. She is survived by her sons Morgan Little of Barrie, Reese Little of Thunder Bay, their father Patrick Little of Toronto, partner Patrick Kunza , mother Pansy Howell of Dryden, 4 sisters; Glenice (Keith) Sveinson of Dryden, Frances (Dr. Roderick) Landymore of Worcester, England, Margaret (Peter) Schneider of Fort St. John, BC, Jennifer Howell of Dryden, and her one brother Dr. Ted Howell of Aberdeen Scotland. Also 6 nieces, 1 nephew, 4 great-nieces, and 3 great nephews. She was predeceased by her father Hubert (Bud) in 1996, who was, along with her mother, an inspiration to her. They taught her the importance of both humility and achievement. They were both her heroes. And finally, a quote from one of Sharman‘s memoirs: “Paddy taught me about being happy, to always look at the best of things and never to regret. My sons taught me to be myself.” A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday October 13th, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of the HARBOURVIEW FUNERAL CENTRE, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. EVANS Wendy Diana (nee Kilborn) November 18th, 1951 - October 4th, 2009 Wendy passed away peacefully at VGH at the age of 57. Predeceased by her loving partner Ed, survived by her dear mother Hilda, brother George, daughters Dawn (Geremy) and Robin (Kyle), grandchildren Kyla, Kaitlyn, Riely and Thomas, her loving Chuchie, her cats Tiva and Mia, many extended family members and friends. She truly enjoyed going to work each day, never complained and loved her co-workers at VCH. She enjoyed working in her garden, going to garage sales and going on Wendy excursions and will always be remembered for her positive outlook and sayings like "darn tootin". She loved her family dearly and will be missed by so many whose lives she touched. We will be honoring Wendy's wishes with a private memorial for the family. MASON, Wenonah Colleen On October 4th, 2009, Wenonah Mason of Edmonton passed away at the age of 54 years. She is survived by her loving companion Scott Montgomery, daughter Diane (Brendon); son Randy (Jackie); grandchildren Salena, Deklin, Taylor, Kyra, and Garin. Nonie also leaves numerous other friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her husband John Mason.
