SMITH, Eric Thomas December 21, 1925 - August 11, 2009 Eric passed away peacefully at his own residence, at the age of eighty-three, on August 11, 2009, in Ormstown, QC. A gentle, spiritual, intelligent friend to all, he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Beloved father of Tom (Lorraine Toscano) and Ellen (Daniel Leger), proud grandfather of Megan and Patrick Smith. Former husband and dear friend of Margaret McCardell. A long-time member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church, Eric enjoyed a long career of service to others at the Royal Victoria, Montreal Children's, Queen Elizabeth and Montreal General Hospitals in audiology, medical electronics and administration. He was a well respected and popular figure in the Ormstown area, which he retired to almost twenty years ago. He had a kind word and ready smile for all. An active and proud member of both the Royal Albert and Chateauguay Masonic Lodges for many years. The brethren of the Chateauguay Lodge will be performing a Masonic Ritual funeral service as part of our celebration of his life. The service will be held at the McGerrigle Funeral Home, 70 Lambton, Ormstown on Monday, August 17 at 2 p.m. - visitation as of 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to Shriner's Hospital for Children (Que) Inc., 1529 Cedar Ave., Montreal, QC., H3G 1A6 or the Women's Auxiliary of the Barrie Memorial Hospital, 28 Gale, Ormstown, Qc J0S 1K0 would be appreciated. STEIGER, Max It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Max Steiger on Thursday, August 13, 2009. Beloved husband of Dora Rotenberg, the late Rachel Colton and the late Frima Wurcel. Cherished father and father-in-law of Eva and Steven Stark, Blooma and Leonard Stark. Adored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and by Dora's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his seven siblings who perished in the Holocaust. BROMLEY , Percy Ludwig July 15, 1910 - August 9, 2009 On August 9 at the age of 99, Percy went to be with the Lord he loved and served all his life. Born in Narsapur, India, of missionary parents, Percy was educated in India and England before coming to Canada in 1928 to study at Prairie Bible Institute, where he met and fell in love with Elsie McElheran. After graduating from PBI, Percy returned to England, then went to China in 1932 with the China Inland Mission. Elsie followed him three years later; they were married in China in 1937. Percy spent his life teaching in Bible schools and colleges - seven of fourteen years in China, one year in Jamaica, eight years in Three Hills, Alberta, three years in Malaysia and nine years in Singapore. Upon retirement in Calgary, he continued teaching in home Bible studies. After the death of his wife Elsie, he moved to Vancouver, BC, and lived in Blenheim Lodge, where he continued to teach the Bible via his writings and occasional sermons. Percy is survived by his six children - Alan (Helen), Lois (Warren) Hammond, Elsa (Roy) Henderson, Ralph (Donna), Blake (Marion), Jack (Sue); sixteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He outlived Elsie, his wife of fifty years, his second wife Frances, and his five brothers and sisters. Percy will be missed by his family as well as the staff and his caregivers at Blenheim Lodge, where he was deeply loved and respected. A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, August 20, at 3:30 p.m. at the Three Hills Cemetery, where his ashes will be interred, Rev. Ron Berg officiating. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, August 24, 2:00 p.m., at Sixteenth Avenue Gospel Chapel, 2756 W. 16th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V6K 3C4, with Rev. Jeff Imbach officiating. CAMPBELL , Leone (nee Graham) June 9, 1942 - August 12, 2009 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Leone Campbell in Calgary, on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the age of 67 years. Leone was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, the eldest child to Murray and Margaret Graham (nee McIntyre). She did her teacher's training in Truro, Nova Scotia and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1963. Her career included working with Indian Affairs in New Brunswick, teaching in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and for the past thirty-five years as a teacher and guidance counselor in the Calgary Catholic School Board. Leone was predeceased by her parents Marg and Murr. She will be forever missed by her husband of forty-three years, Joseph Alexander Campbell; son Mark (Tracy) and grandson Morgan of Monroe, Washington; daughter Kerri of Calgary; siblings Donna (John) Curtis of Halifax, Paula (Ken) Rayner of Markham, Kenneth (Lynn) Graham of Sydney River, and Anita Graham of Halifax; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Leone had an enthusiasm and love for life, and she will be remembered for her strength, kindness, wisdom and guidance. FOSTER , Marion Elizabeth October 13, 1917 (Calgary) August 3, 2009 (Vancouver) Marion, beloved sister, daughter, treasured aunt, dear friend, humanitarian. Survived by sister, Marguerite Elliot, brother-in-law, William Elliot, nieces Susan Ferris, Janet Connerton, Patsy Morgan, nephews David Lee, John Elliot, Rob Weir and four great-nieces, seven great-nephews. Predeceased by parents, Elizabeth and Havelock, sisters Dorothy Lee, and Pat Weir, and nephew David Elliot. In her teens, Marion relearned to walk after contracting polio and overcame the early death of her father with her mother's support. Marion graduated in social work (UBC) and had a distinguished career with the National YWCA and the World YWCA working in the Caribbean (Suriname (Dutch Guyana), Trinidad, Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis). She later moved to Vancouver to be with her mother and worked with the Vancouver - Richmond Association of Mentally Handicapped Persons. Marion was a champion for the physically and mentally challenged and supported many clients even after her retirement. She possessed remarkable qualities of compassion, humility and modesty. HAWK , Donald Broomfield 1925 - 2009 It is with great sadness that the family of Don Hawk announce his sudden passing on August 11, 2009 after a short illness. Don was born in High River, Alberta on July 31, 1925 and lived his entire life on the Hawk homeplace west of Parkland. He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Shirley (Caldwell); daughter Linda of Stony Plain; son Brian (Pauline) of Nanton; and three granddaughters, Quinn, Jaycee and Cory. Don is also survived by brother Ken (Doris) of Nanton, brother-in-law Howard (Mary) Caldwell of Adams Lake and numerous nieces and nephews. KAMPHUIS , Johanna April 17, 1916 - August 11, 2009 Johanna Kamphuis went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 11, 2009 at the age of 93 years. Dear mother of John and Handan, Henry and Joanne, Linda and Neil, Edwin and Barb, Richard and Linda, and Ingrid and Frank. She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband Albert, daughter Edna, grandson Geoffrey, and daughter-in-law Nellie. She will be remembered for her dedication to her family and church, as well as her strong will and determined spirit. She was happiest when she was serving her family and friends and we will all miss her. Joseph was born in Gasztony, Hungary and immigrated to Canada in 1956. STEELE, Harold 2009-08-13 Mr. W.H. (Harold) Steele, resident of 331 Bolton Crescent, passed away at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital on Monday, August 10, 2009, with family by his side. Born on August 27, 1922 in Fort William, he was raised and educated here and attended Fort William Collegiate high school. He was employed as an electrician first with Fort William Transit and then as a Telephone Technician with Thunder Bay Telephone, retiring in 1983 after over 30 years of service with the City. Harold served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 to 1944, receiving his "wings" in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and was stationed in the Orkney Islands, Scotland during the war. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 6. Harold married Norma Berglund in 1952. They had two daughters, Janis and Roma. He was predeceased by Norma and later married Jessie Finlayson, in 1984. Harold was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a kind man, always willing to lend a helping hand, and known for his generosity, quick wit and sense of humour. Harold is survived by his wife, Jessie; children Janis Steele and Roma (Ken) Kopechanski; stepchildren Bill (Jana) Finlayson, Jayne (Keith) Henry and Judy Christian; grandchildren Lauren (Aaron Casella), Kaitlin and Kristine Kopechanski, Jason and Joshua Henry, Gary (Cherise) and Paul Finlayson, Ryan, Cole and Skylar Christian; sister Shirley (Jack) Burns, and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife Norma in 1981, mother Margaret in 1976 and father Alfred in 1982. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 15, at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, reception to follow at the Travelodge Airlane Hotel. Internment will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

MacLEOD , Ian Colin November 28, 1927 - August 11, 2009 Ian (Dusty) Colin MacLeod died peacefully on August 11, 2009 at the age of 81. He will be lovingly remembered by Anne (nee McEachern), his wife of fifty-seven years, his five children, Sandy (Paul), Beth (Emmet), Ian (Jo-Anne), David (Donna) and Duncan (Cheryl) and thirteen grandchildren, Tom, Dan, Michael, Austin, Steven, Veronica, Kevin, Meagan, Casey, Jordan, Taylor, Connor and Elyse, and his sisters Joan and Denise MacLeod. Ian was born in Arichat, Nova Scotia on November 28, 1927 to Ian Colin MacLeod and Estelle (nee Boucher) MacLeod. He grew up in Glace Bay, N.S. where he attended St. Anne's High School. He received his BSc. in Chemistry from St. Francis Xavier University in 1950 followed by his Bachelor of Engineering from Nova Scotia Tech in 1952. He was in the reserves while in university and throughout his career in Canada. He maintained his membership in the Sarnia Legion for fifty-seven years. He met Anne at St. F.X. in 1949 and they were married in Sarnia, Ontario on September 23, 1952. Ian had joined Imperial Oil in Sarnia in the summer of 1952. Their five children were born in Sarnia. The family transferred with Esso overseas to Libya in 1964 and to Aruba in 1972. Following his retirement in 1982, he and Anne made Aruba their home. They enjoyed travelling extensively visiting Europe, the Mediterranean and Canada. One of their travel highlights was a trip to the Arctic Circle and London, England was a favourite destination. Ian collected stamps from the time he was a boy and he was a published amateur photographer and a talented woodworker. His sharp analytical mind and wit served him well in life and he enjoyed the company of many good friends from his time at St. F.X., the reserves, and Sarnia, Libya and Aruba. A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. Gerard's Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Monday, August 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. A private Graveside Service in Queen's Park Cemetery will follow. CORNISH , Dennis James Dennis James Cornish, aged 37, went missing on February 24, 2008 from 100 Mile House, BC. Dennis was born in Calgary, AB on September 13, 1970. His family, in consultation with an R.C.M.P. investigative team, now feels he has passed on. Dennis is lovingly remembered by his daughter Chalynn Wellington, father and mother, Dennis and Janette Cornish, older sister Corinne Cornish as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Dennis' life was full of adventure and he lived on the edge. He grew up in the community of Mapleridge, Calgary. Dennis loved water and snow skiing and became a Certified Canadian Ski Instructor in his early twenties. He had an inherent understanding of mechanics, technology and computers became his passion. He received Computer Technology Certificates from SAIT. He worked for Apex Cable and then five years as a computer analyst at the Calgary Board of Education. From Calgary, Dennis found his way to Canmore, Kelowna and finally Northern BC. He had a beautiful spirit and he touched many people with his warm and charming nature. In acknowledgement of Dennis' life his family is hosting a gathering on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel, 2620 - 32 Avenue N.E., Calgary, in the McKnight Room - 2:00 p.m. Our intention is to honor Dennis as the amazing person he was. This is a casual gathering. In order to create an uplifting atmosphere, please come with a smile, dress casual and colorful. Born on May 1, 1938 in Reisjärvi, Finland, Raili and Pentti came to Sudbury with their two young daughters in 1969, with Tero born shortly after their arrival. Together, they hand built their family summer log home on Onaping Lake – a true labour of love and an everlasting legacy to their family. Raili has been the President of the Ladies Auxiliary of Finlandia Village for the past 12 years. During this time, she was instrumental in their ongoing fundraising efforts, motivated by her deep desire to help establish an all encompassing retirement residence for the Finnish community in Sudbury. Her influence is evident everywhere at Finlandia Village. Raili was an extraordinary human being – an accomplished seamstress and rug weaver, the BEST pulla baker, an exceptional handywoman - she could simply accomplish anything and everything that she set her mind to. She loved fishing, her regular trips with Pentti to Mexico and the States and bargain shopping, amongst numerous interests. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family. The family wishes to thank the entire nursing staff on the Medical floor at Laurentian site who cared compassionately for Raili and a very sincere thank you to Megan from Oncology. BAKER, Brian F. - Born September 9th, 1945, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 11th, 2009. He was the son of John and Frances Baker (deceased), brother to Lorraine (Barker) and Stan. Brian graduated from Denis Morris High School and the GMI Institute in Flint, MI. Early on he worked for his father at Baker's Radiator Inc., in St. Catharines. He was later a partner in establishing Bugsy's Dining Lounge (1978 until 1987) and Tin Pan Alley (Lewiston, NY) and also held various hotel management positions. Brian was fundamentally involved in many worthwhile promotions for the benefit of the City St. Catharines: a member of St. Catharines Municipal Council (holding 3 terms as Alderman of Port Dalhousie Ward 1983-1991); was past Director of St. Catharines Business Club; served on the Lincoln County Catholic Separate School Board of Trustees; was a member of the St. Catharines Transit Commission; was a member of the Community Vision Committee; and, was the co-founder of CARE-LINE and a generous supporter of Niagara Peninsula Children's Centre Foundation. He was also a member of the Faculty of Niagara College in Business Development and Hotel Management (since 1996) teaching successful business strategies. He was an avid supporter and/or coach of minor hockey and baseball teams (i.e. Director of St. Catharines Minor Hockey Association; Director of the Jaycees). Brian was a devoted Chicago Blackhawks and Hamilton Tiger Cats fan. He will remain a chartered member of the BBB Team. His voice and great humour as a radio personality and broadcaster on the Oldies Show at CHSC, as well as being a disc jockey at the Castle, will be fondly remembered. More recently he was an Account Executive for Astral Media and his presence and strong personality will be missed. Brian is survived by his best friend and fiancée, Carol Blue; his beloved son, Kevin and daughter-in-law Julie; his 2 daughters Kim (Parrish) and Kelly (Brian) and their children Makenzie, Morgan, and Connor; Carol's children Christopher (Miranda and their son Damien), Matt (Emily) and Alicia Bowlby; and, his close friends in the Friday Night Gang, as well as Anne Baker, mother of Brian's children. He was well loved and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and co-workers. He will be best remembered for his humour, passion, opinions, enthusiasm, and generosity. FITCH , Clyde Andrew (Bud) Passed away peacefully at Southwood Hospice in Calgary, on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the age of 84. Loving father of Drew Fitch (Geri) of Calgary, Pam Clark (Christie) of Toronto and Chris Fitch of Calgary. He will be greatly missed by his granddaughters, Christie, Julie, Stephanie and Laura. Dear brother of Dorothy (Don) Gowanlock and predeceased by sisters Joyce Wrobel and Lois Mitzel. Born in Amherstburg, Ontario, Bud grew up in Windsor and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1949 with a degree in civil engineering. After enjoying a career as an engineer, Bud spent the past thirty years living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In the fall of 2008 Bud moved to Calgary to be near family during his battle with cancer. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Frank Cunningham, the staff of Lake Bonavista Village and Southwood Hospice for their compassionate care. POLUCHOWICZ, John Micheal 2009-08-13 It is with deep sorrow that the family of John Micheal Poluchowicz announces his peaceful passing, on Monday, August 10, 2009, with his family by his side. John was born in Pinsk, Poland in 1937. As a young teenager, he immigrated to Canada and began a new life in Thunder Bay. John attended Selkirk High School and later married and began a family. He was employed at CP Rail, Parnell Bread, and Palm Dairies. He was a long time member and past president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #149. John was also a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus #1447. In addition to his many memberships, he proudly served with the R.C.A.S.C for over twenty years. Aside from his greatest pleasure of spending time with his family and grandchildren, John was an avid fisherman who enjoyed camping at Whitefish Lake. It was during these times that John taught us patience and the importance of family time. Among his various interests, he also enjoyed cheering on his favourite local Thunder Wolves hockey team for many years. John touched the lives of all those who knew him. He was a kind and compassionate man who would not hesitate to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. John enjoyed sharing his time with the community, whether it was peeling potatoes to make pierogies at the legion, serving spaghetti suppers at the K.C., or helping and socializing with his neighbours. John was predeceased by his parents, Maria and Walter, his brothers, Marion and Walter, and children, Joseph and Katherine. He will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by his surviving daughters, Shelly (Patrick) and Tina (Shoji), sister, Teresa, and the lights of his life, his grandchildren, Dylan, Amanda, Mia, and Noah. Also surviving nieces and nephews in Thunder Bay and other family members in Poland. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Casimir‘s Church on Thursday, August 13th, 2009 beginning at 1:00pm. SUWOROW, George 2009-08-13 Mr. George Suworow Sr., age 83 years, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 10, 2009 at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. George was born on December 18, 1925 in Kiev, Ukraine to Mike and Tamara Suworow. In 1943 he went to Germany to work in the camps. After the war ended, he married Lena and together they moved to Belgium in 1946 and in 1952 they moved to Canada. George worked in the elevators until his retirement in 1989. He enjoyed travelling, fishing and cars. Survived by his wife Lena, daughter Lucy (William) Glass and granddaughter Lena Tamara Glass. Predeceased by his son George in 1999. VENTRUDO, Gene 2009-08-13 VENTRUDO Gene Ventrudo died peacefully surrounded by family at his daughter’s home in Calgary on Monday, August 10, 2009. Born in Fort William on May 10, 1933, Gene lived in Thunder Bay until he moved to Calgary two years ago to be near his family. Gene worked for more than 30 years in the family grocery business, Consumers Foodland, before moving on to positions at K-Mart, Thunder Bay Bearings and, in retirement, Everest Funeral Chapel. An excellent athlete, Gene was always involved in hockey and baseball, either as a player, coach, or spectator. But his passion was golf, and he was at one time one of the best amateur golfers in the region. He was a longtime member of the Fort William Country Club and Chapples Golf Course, where he served on the board of directors. He will be deeply missed by his wife Miriam (Lacey) of 49 years; his son Brian (Lorie Zorn) and granddaughters Katherine and Amanda of Ottawa; son James (Luigia); daughter Lisa (Michael Broeders) and daughter Gina Maier (Mark) and grandchildren Brayden and Helena, all of Calgary. Gene is also survived by brothers Albert (Wilma), Jerry (Susan); sister-in-law Joyce; brother-in-law Pat (Donna); sister-in-law Janice Norris (Art); numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Thunder Bay and Italy and lifelong friends Peter and Dodie Campaner. SAINIO, Reino 2009-08-14 Mr. Reino John Sainio, born March 19, 1928, passed away unexpectedly in an auto accident on August 11, 2009. Reino will be lovingly remembered by son Wilfred and wife Carol, daughter Annemarie and husband Mike Prpic, granddaughter Jennifer and husband Michael Picard, granddaughter Marcia and husband Ed Foekens, grandson Raymond and wife Marissa Sainio, great grandchildren Joshua and Alec Picard, Landon and Lucas Foekens and Sarah Sainio, as well as a dear friend Shirley Delin. Also holding fond memories of Reino are his extended family - Ingo Roetscher and Cindy Cockell, Ursula and Stan Flesher, Ingrid Sabatier, Bill St. John and Denise Roetscher. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years Margitta Sainio, parents Anna and John Sainio, sister-in-law Elsie St. John and brother-in-law Horst Roetscher. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. Reino worked for 40 years at Manitoba Pool Elevators, before enjoying many years of retirement with his family. He was very proud of his great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much. He enjoyed traveling all over North America, from Mexico to Alaska. Reino particularly enjoyed the outdoors, spending a lot of time fishing and hunting over the years. Another passion was going to his camp on Nalla Lake. Reino has been an active member of Epiphany Lutheran Church for many years. He has volunteered many hours at Shelter House over the years, helping those in need. HOGG , Dr. David C. September 5, 1921 - August 9, 2009 Dr. David C. Hogg, beloved husband of Jean Hogg of Boulder, Colorado, passed away on August 9, 2009 at the age of 87 years. Dr. David C. Hogg was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan on September 5, 1921. As a young child he moved to North Battleford, SK, growing up a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church in North Battleford, and later St. John's Episcopal Church in Boulder, CO. David received his BSc. (Radio Physics) from University of Western Ontario in 1949. He received his MSc. (Physics) in 1951 and Ph.D. (Physics) in 1953 from McGill University. He joined the Canadian Army in 1940 and took a luxury liner converted to a troop ship to United Kingdom and arrived in Glasgow, Scotland on Christmas Day 1940. It was during his five years of service overseas that he learned about a new radar system that influenced his education and career. He met Jean MacMillan ("The prettiest girl at the dance.") on the outdoor dance floor at Wonderland in London, ON and in 1947 they married. In 1953, Bell Telephone Laboratories recruited him to Holmdel, New Jersey and he stayed with the company until 1977. During his distinguished career at Bell Laboratories, he was closely associated with the Nobel Prize winning physicists Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson. He was a contributing author for "The Big Bang Theory" (published in 2009) and had more than eighty publications relating to fundamental research in microwaves, radio propagation and attenuation from rainfall, antenna design, optics, satellite communications and remote sensing. Dr. Hogg was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1978 for his work at Bell Labs. He joined the NOAA Wave Propagation Laboratory (now ESRL/PSD) in 1977 and was chief of the Environmental Radiometry and Radio Meteorology Program Areas (1977 - 1986). He was instrumental in the design and implementation of Wind Profilers, Radiometric Profilers, and many of their applications to remote sensing of the atmosphere. From 1983 to 1994, David also enjoyed a career as an Adjoint Professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In addition to his membership in the NAE, he was a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, was awarded the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society's Distinguished Achievement Award in 1984 and received a U.S. Department of Commerce Silver Medal in 1983. He contributed to two NATO Institutes to committees of the U.S. Army services and holds numerous patents. He was a member of AAAS and a past United States Chairman of URSI Commission. David had a lifelong passion for music with many pieces of his classical music published by Voice of the Rockies. He was a vocal composer, as well as a choral, strings and piano composer. He participated in many public performances as a vocalist, pianist and composer. He sang at the 1938 Regina Exhibition, where he composed both music and lyrics. In 1992, David received a composer award from the Colorado Music Educators Association. Recently, David completed a large musical composition to the Canterbury Tales. Dr. Hogg also had a passion for fishing, a love for his English Springer Spaniel (Brandy) and was an avid golfer, tennis player and "Over the Hill Gang" skier in retirement. With his wife, Jean, David traveled throughout the world, Canada and the United States many times. Dr. David C. Hogg is survived by his loving wife Jean; children, Randal Hogg of Aurora, Colorado and Rebecca Ferguson and son-in-law Richard Ferguson of De Winton, Alberta; three grandchildren, Stevie McKinney, Caitlin Ferguson and Ryan Ferguson; sister, Margaret Hierlihy of Picton, Ontario, as well as many nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his grandson, David Hogg and daughter-in-law Peggy Hogg. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colorado in early October 2009.
