LILLICO, Frances (nee Spratt) Peacefully at the Ottawa Grace Manor on June 30th, 2009 in her 93rd year. Youngest daughter of T.A. Spratt and Annie Gamble. Predeceased by her husband Bill and twelve brothers and sisters. She will be greatly missed by her children: Don (Irene), Bruce (Alison), Brian (Sherri) and Jane (Steve Sargent). Proud and much loved grandmother of Kimberley (Oliver), Lauren (Joe), Joanne (Shane), Susan (Guy), Sandra, Eric (Amanda) and Tom. Great-grandmother of Antonio, William, Isabelle, Chelsea, Jayden, Mathieu, Jaden, predeceased by Melissa. Fran was a founding member and past president of the Granite Curling Club (Ladies). For many years she was an active member of the Westboro United Church. Fran was an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying curling, golf, lawn bowling, bocci and a long time supporter of the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Summers at Lake Bernard were spent with family and friends enjoying many parties and card games. We will miss her great hospitality, wonderful sense of humour and zest for life. HARTY , Gwen June 17, 1925 - June 29, 2009 Gwen Harty passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Monday, June 29, 2009 at the age of 84 years. She is survived by her loving husband Frank; son Ernie (Jeanette); daughter Debbie (Paul) Gibney; four grandchildren Craig, Chris, Micheal and Amanda. Gwen was predeceased by her twin brothers Arthur and Roland Moore. Gwen will be most remembered for her faith and love of the Lord, her unconditional love of her family and friends and her positive outlook on life. MATTHEWS , Walter (Wally) Llewellyn Walter (Wally) Llewellyn Matthews passed away June 30, 2009 at the age of 76 years. Wally was born in Winnipeg, attended schools in Edmonton and Calgary, graduating from Central High School. He was employed by Alberta Government at the Land Titles office from 1953 to 1988. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Daisy Matthews and companion Kathy Kever. He is survived by his two children, Scott (Mauna) Matthews and Cindy (Mike) Chauncey; granddaughter Michelle (Matt) Chauncey and Carol, his former wife. His interests included curling and golf. RYAN , Daniel April 3, 1958 - July 1, 2009 Dan Ryan of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the age of 51 years. Dan was born in Montreal on April 3, 1958, moved to Calgary in 1976 and has since resided here. Dan was an avid lover of all sports. He lived on the golf course during the summer, and the hockey arena in the winter. He coached his daughters for fifteen years, along with many other softball players, to many provincial and national championships. Dan was a natural leader, which led to a prominent identity in the Information Technology world. He was an amazing father, leader, boss, and a wonderful friend to all who crossed his path. Dan is lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Stephanie and Kristen (fiance Jason Grierson), their mother Tracy Ryan, Joanne Major and her daughter Rachel, his mother Barbara and one brother Michael, all of Calgary. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends. Dan was predeceased by father Jim and sister Janice Ryan-Lee. Rev. Louis Van Gool Died suddenly on June 25, 2009 at the age of seventy six. Born in Utrecht, The Netherlands on June 8, 1933 to the late Louis Van Gool and the late Josepha Van den Broek. Beloved brother of Thea (Casey), Rudy (Barbara), Eddy (Christine), and Hetty (Lambert). Dear uncle to nieces and nephews, Maria, Peter, Karl, Kristoffer, Karisma, and Miranda. Dear great uncle to Alexa, Maya, Justin, Emily, Claire, Gillian and Anne-Liese. He will be dearly missed by his extended family, friends and colleagues. Father Louis was ordained to the priesthood on September 24, 1976. A series of appointments as curate followed at St. Jean Brebeuf, St. Gabriel’s, and St. John Fisher. He was also chaplain at Sacred Heart School of Montreal for more than seven years. In 1984 he was appointed pastor of Corpus Christi where he remained for eighteen years. He then served as assistant at St. Patrick’s Basilica from 2003 until retirement in 2007. Upon retirement Father Louis remained in residence at St. Patrick’s and continued to minister to God’s people. Father Louis had great devotion and love of the liturgy and especially loved to celebrate God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. He quietly ministered to the poor, the sick, the elderly and those on the fringes of society. HEWTON, Lloyd A. S. - of Edmonton and formerly of Lion's Head and Port Elgin. Lloyd passed away unexpectedly on June 27, 2009, at the age of 77. Cherished father of Debbie and grandfather of Linda. REFF, Sister Rita, c.s.c. (Sister Elizabeth Ann) Sister Rita, a Sister of Holy Cross, died on Monday, June 27, 2009 at St. Joseph Pavilion, St. Laurent, Quebec, at the age of 91, 73 years in religious life. She was the first-born of Charles John Reff and Mary Elizabeth Moineau, Clayton, N.Y. In addition to her Holy Cross family, Sister is mourned by her siblings Virginia Comins (the late Raymond) of Clayton, N.Y., Sister Faith, c.s.c. of Ottawa, Grace Ahlheim (John) of Watertown, N,Y., Charles (Pat) of Watertown, N.Y., Robert (Pat) of Campbellsville, Kentucky, and their extended families. Predeceased by her brother John (Lorraine). Sister Rita was loved as an educator, especially by her high school students in Montreal and at Iona Academy, St. Raphael's West. As a religious education coordinator, she served generously in New York State at Rouses Point and Clayton. Her service to the community included novice director, local superior in several houses, and more recently in service to the sick and senior sisters at the infirmary. Her spirit of compassion and understanding endeared her to all. Visitation will be at St. Joseph Pavilion, 900 Cote Vertu, St. Laurent, on Friday, July 3. from 6 to 9 p.m., prayer service at 7:30. She was born in Beiseker, Alberta on February 16, 1922 and lived most of her life in Alberta. She is survived by Ronald, her loving husband of sixty-eight years. Beloved mother of Kathleen Johnson of Calgary and Elizabeth Johnson (Ian) of Mississauga, Ont. She was predeceased by her loving granddaughter Karyn Rachel Johnson (1996) and her beloved daughter Sandra (Sandy) Eileen Galloway (March 18, 2009). John Leonard HODGES SR. Muriel M. Way formerly of Charlie Lake, NB, was held at Flewelling Funeral Home, Nackawic on June 24, 2009 with Douglas Peeling officiating. Interment was in Hillman Cemetery. Muriel and her husband Willard operated Shogomoc Sporting Camps at Charlie Lake for over 50 years. She passed away at Dow's Special Care Home, Scott's Siding, NB on June 21, 2009. Born in Port Colborne Betty has lived in this area all of her life. She ran Doan's Esso in Port Colborne, worked for Tuck's Jewellers for 40 years and then worked at the Port Colborne General Hospital for 21 years as office manager from where she retired. She volunteered for the Port Colborne General Hospital Auxilliary after her retirement. Betty was a member of the Central United Church, the UCW and the Grace Rebekah Lodge, I.O.D.E. Chapter. Elle demeurait à Haut-Sheila. Née le 12 octobre 1924, elle était fille de feu Raguel Richard et de feu Vitaline Benoit. HORNE , Donald M. 1932 - 2009 It is with sadness, but pride, the Horne family announces Don conducted his last passenger train trip to Heaven June 30, 2009. He was born July 1, 1932 at Tracy, NB, the eldest son of Madeline and Gerald Horne. Don is survived by his wife of fifty years, Marilyn, son Mark (Marilou), daughter Katrina (Dan) and his two special granddaughters Mikaela and Alison Horne; two sisters Patricia Tait and Pamela (Jim) Lockwood; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Eugene and sister Deborah. Don was educated in NB, joining the CPR in Saint John, NB in 1955 with summer employment at the former CPR hotel, Chateau Lake Louise. There he met Marilyn Buck and after four years of romancing in the blue Canadian Rockies, Marilyn and Don were married in 1958 in Banff. While yearning for hometown NB, where the young couple resided for nearly two years, the mountains and the Calgary Stampede were calling them back to where their roots began. Transferring to the Calgary division of the CPR, Don worked his way up from brakeman to conductor, retiring in 1990 after thirty-five years of service. During his working career he was very involved with the UTU and AA. During his retirement years, Don enjoyed gardening, going to Florida in the winters, learning to paint, continuing to help others through AA and the Cardiac Wellness Institute of Calgary. Don was also an active member of First Baptist Church. Attended Caterknowle Council School in Sheffield, England. Gerald served with the British Army in Britain and Europe and landed on Normandy Beach during the D-Day Invasion of June 1944. Last surviving founding member and Past Chairman of the British Fellowship of the Services (218 Mess) and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
