OBITUARY ALEKSANDER KURYLOWICZ Born September 12, 1924 in Poland; Passed away June 13, 2009 in Montreal, Canada. Aleksander Kurylowicz, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on June 13 at Sacre Coeur Hospital in his eighty-fifth year of life. Aleksander is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Aleksandra and their three children: Kazimierz (Casey) (Helen; Paul, Daniel and Michael), Anna (George; Catherine), and Stefan (Mary; Jonathan and Stefan Jr.). His death is also mourned by numerous nephews, nieces, extended family, and friends in Canada, United States and in Poland. He will be deeply missed by colleagues of the Polish Combatants Association (SPK) and by members of the Polish-Canadian Aid Association (PKTWP) of which he was a long standing member. Aleksander was predeceased by his siblings, a sister and three brothers. A veteran of WWII, Aleksander was conscripted at age seventeen, served in establishing communications and telegraphy for the Polish Army, and was awarded numerous medals and citations for his active participation and bravery in actions on the Russian and German fronts. His is a story of harsh and difficult winter war campaigns, loss of a brother in the waning days of the war, and of lost youth. In Poland, after the war, Aleksander continued his education, was trained and excelled in the practice of forestry management. Aleksander and his young family immigrated to Canada from Poland in 1964. His technical background and knowledge allowed him to seek and gain employment at Canada Wire and Cable Company where he worked as a technician and die maker for the next twenty-five years prior to taking his retirement. Aleksander was blessed with a loving family and friends. Always a cherished father, grandfather and devoted husband, you will remain in our hearts forever. God bless and keep your eternal soul. PIEROTTI, John (William) Jack - aged 59 years. Sadly Jack passed away on Thursday, June 11th. He died peacefully at home. Dearly beloved husband of Yvonne, proud and loving father to Jackie Mazyak and Shelley (Kent) Confurius. He was also the loved and loving “Joe“ to his grandchildren Brandon, Madison and Dawson. Dear brother to Jim (Donna), Barry (Audrey), Karen and Ron (Sharon). Predeceased by his parents Louis and Ivy Pierotti. We will miss Jack's love, humour and talent every day. BOURDEAU, Vincent - 76 years, of Tilbury, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 12, 2009. Dearly missed by his son Wayne, his daughter Karen, and their mother Donna Bourdeau. Dearest godfather of Monique (Leboeuf) Olthorp and Christine Mailloux. Predeceased by his parents Francis Bourdeau and Marie (Bourassa) Bourdeau. RUMBLE, Richard Ivan - Passed away at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on Sunday June 14, 2009 at the age of 63. Richard is survived by his loving wife Jane (Crewe), by their sons Mark (Charlene) of Guelph and Philip (Shannon) of Strathroy and by their grandchildren Aidan and Alex. He is also survived by his only brother Fred (Sondra) Rumble of Blenheim, by his niece Sarah Girty of Blenheim and by his nephews Neeland Rumble of Sarnia, Warren Rumble of Blenheim and Greg Girty of Amherstburg. He is predeceased by his parents Ivan & Helen (Scoyne) Rumble and by his infant sister Margaret Jean Rumble. Richard, whose favourite saying was “be the best at whatever you are“ was a teacher not only in a school but in the community that he lived in. His teaching career took him to W.J. Baird Public School and to Ridgetown Public School. He was a coach and referee for Blenheim Minor Hockey, he was a life member of the Merlin Legion, the Blenheim Blades Alumni, the Chatham Maroons Alumni, and the Blenheim & District Freedom Library & Military Museum. He was the Past President of the Merlin Legion, the Blenheim Community Golf Course and the Blenheim Minor Hockey Association. He was currently on the executive of the Blenheim Blades Hockey Club. Even after his retirement from Ridgetown Public School, Richard continued to volunteer at schools which showed a dedication and commitment to future generations. Recently Richard and Jane were able to enjoy vacations to the Western and Eastern parts of Canada, to southern points, cruises and most recently to New Zealand. In his quiet times, he enjoyed golf, bridge and gardening. KNOTT, Raymond John - At his home on Saturday, June 13, 2009 in his 71st year, Raymond John Knott. Much loved son of Bert and Ev Knott. Dear brother of Bobbie Stanbridge, Sandy White and Brian Knott and his wife Jan. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Ray was a longtime resident of Brantford and a hard working, honest Canadian and proud of it. Ray was an employee of A. G. Spalding for 27 years where he personally made the game balls for the Canadian Football League and was called upon personally to oversee the making of the footballs for 27 consecutive Grey Cup Games. MASK, Darlene Dorothy Ellen (nee Kirby) - Peacefully at home on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at age 64. Loving wife of Clemens for almost 45 years. Much loved mother of Jayson and Tyler. HICKS, Vera - On Friday, June 12, 2009 our dear wife and mother was welcomed by the angels into her heavenly home. LYONS, Robert Bruce - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, cousin and friend, Robert Bruce Lyons at Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre on Friday June 12, 2009. Bruce was born in Fort Frances October 27, 1946. Moving with his family to Port Arthur at a very young age. Bruce is survived by his wife of 44 years, Donna "Lou" Lyons (nee Sinclair), his son Tab Lyons (Lucie), daughters Tamara Jane Day (Scott), Traci Dawn Lyons-Barney (Jason), his grandchildren, Justin, Kayla, Jaidyn, Issac, Ilicia and Ilias. Bruce is also survived by his Father Alexander B. Lyons, his brother F. D. Edward Lyons (Margaret Hunter), his sister Debra D. Lyons (Raymond Maksymiw) and his best friend Fred Pukila. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles and other relatives also survive. Bruce loved life and enjoyed spending time with his family and especially going to his grandchildren’s sporting events. He loved watching them play hockey, baseball, soccer, and watching their dancing recitals and karate meets. Bruce was "our go to guy" to have all of our computer needs looked after. Bruce enjoyed fishing and watching car racing. He was an alumnus of Lakehead University, having gone back to school after many years to obtain his Bachelor of Arts degrees in Indigenous Learning and Philosophy. Bruce is pre-deceased by his mother Dorothy Violet Lyons (nee Fenton), his grandparents Mary Jane & Edward Lyons and Edna & John Fenton. Memorial Services for Bruce will be held Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 11:00 am at the Thunder Bay Free Methodist Church, located at 920 Sprague St in Thunder Bay with Rev Andre Korstanjc officiating. BAILEY, Robert Passed away peacefully at home in Ottawa on Friday, June 12th, 2009 in his 78th year. Beloved husband of Marilyn (nee Wilkinson). Loving father of Heather (Brian Tapscott), Kevin (Lynn Erichsen), Colleen (Tim Nason) and Chris (Sue). Cherished grandfather of Matthew, Jenna, Erich, Brianne, Kendra, Alexandra, Halle, Logan, Aidan and Coleman. Predeceased by his children Karen Sue and Darrell Robert and sisters Dolly Le Geyt and Julie Berrill. Bob was born in Calgary, the youngest of 8 children and is survived by his siblings Mona (Warren Stewart), Jean Le Geyt and John Bailey of Calgary, Bette (Bob Durrant) of White Rock and Bill Bailey of Victoria. Fondly remembered by sisters-in-law Carol Halton, Beverly (Michael Marshman) and Sandra (Frank Mertz). Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Bob graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1955, and later obtained post-graduate diplomas in Traffic Engineering (Yale) and Town Planning (University of Toronto). After six years as a Traffic Engineer with the City of Calgary, he moved his family to Ontario. His career included 11 years with city and regional governments in Hamilton before he came to the City of Ottawa in 1976 as the Commissioner of Community Development. After his retirement in 1987, Bob put his considerable talents to work solving problems, formally as a mediator for the OMB, and informally as everything from a handyman to a financial advisor for friends and family. Bob was also an active member of Rideau Park United Church. He spent many happy years travelling the world but best loved camping with family and friends on Georgian Bay, sugaring-off in the spring, and helping to build or renovate almost anything. A kind and generous man, he loved and was loved by many. Special thanks to Dr. Louise Coulombe and caregivers Sonia and Maureen. A Memorial Service will be held at Rideau Park United Church, 2203 Alta Vista Drive on Friday, June 19 at 2:00 pm, with reception to follow. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 12:15 pm. Dear husband of Elizabeth for 58 years and father of Stephen (Linda), Terri (Bob Elgie) and Douglas (Diane). Loving granddad of Bill, Melissa and Matt Elgie and Stefanie, Andrew and Geoffrey Boyd. Cliff is the son of the late George Boyd of Gore Bay and Florence McDonell and later step son of Betty Boyd. Brother of Michael (Sharon), Donald (Dawn) and Patricia Tossell (Chris). He is also survived by his special cousins and many nieces and nephews. Cliff joined the army at the young age of 17 and at the end of the war continued on to finish his education. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto in 1951, graduating in the top 10 of his class. After returning to Manitoulin Island he opened his law practice in Gore Bay and in 1965 was appointed a judge of the Provincial Court Criminal Division in Sault Ste Marie. He was the president of the Provincial Association of Ontario Judges (Criminal Division) in 1972- 1973. Cliff retired in 1989. He and Elizabeth moved back to Manitoulin Island and remained there until his death. Cliff had been a member of many organizations over the years and was an avid sportsman. He loved his fishing and boating years and the fall deer hunt. Curling was enjoyed but his great passion was golfing. Friends may call at CULGIN FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. WEED , Gordon Charles March 15, 1924 - June 13, 2009 It is with great sadness that the family of Gordon Weed announce his passing from cancer on Saturday, June 13, 2009. Gordon was predeceased by his parents Earl and Lillian Weed. He is survived by his wife Iris of sixty-one years; son Garry (Lynn) Weed of Breton, AB and daughters Gail Weed and Gwen (Jack) Hughes of Calgary. Also mourning Gordon's loss are grandchildren Gord Magrum, Adam Weed, Heather Gillespie, Andrea Gillespie, Chance Pearle, and Jason and Kristina Hughes as well as Gordon's sisters Helen Johnson (Stan) of Moose Jaw, SK; Earline (Richard) Woodall of Windsor, ON; June (Jim) Gillies of Guelph, ON and Lynne (Barry) Ashton of Hay River, NWT. Gordon was a journeyman carpenter spending many years as construction superintendent for Wilson Homes before starting his own custom finishing company with Jess Mitschke as Weed & Mitschke for six years, then on his own as Weed Construction. Gordon was a finishing contractor for local builders including Springer Construction, T.H. Nielson and many others but during the last forty years of his career worked primarily with Morrison Homes. His reputation for hard work, quality craftsmanship, honesty and reliability led to ongoing job offers long after the advances of age forced him to retire at age seventy. After retirement Gordon and Iris spent summers traveling in their motorhome and helping on son Garry's farm near Breton, AB. Gordon always enjoyed curling and skipped with the Old Timers curling league for several winters after he retired. The family would like to extend special thanks to Gordon's long-time friends, Yvonne Hodak and Bob and Dorothy Korstad for looking out for Dad's well-being over the past several years. Our appreciation also extends to Doug Stuart and all the staff at Mayfair Care Centre for their caring and compassion to Gordon and his family in the last weeks of his life. Gordon was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, a cherished brother, and a dedicated friend. He will be deeply missed but his memory will live on in those who knew and loved him. TAYLOR , Florence Marjorie October 25, 1924 - June 12, 2009 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Florence Marjorie (Marj) Taylor on June 12, 2009. She passed away surrounded by her family at the Agape Hospice after a lengthy battle with cancer. Marj leaves her four children: Pam Scrobogna (Al), Joy Taylor, Doug Taylor (Norma) and M. Scott Taylor (Josette McGregor); nine grandchildren: Kirk Bothwell (Rachel Schachar), Reid Bothwell (Julia Herscovitch), Lisa Monk (Paul Naphin), Amy Deligny (Donovan), Karen Monk (Grant Loftus), Sara Polzen (Tyler), Geoff Taylor, Evelyn and Jonah Taylor-McGregor as well as two great-grandchildren: Chance and Emily Polzen. Marj was predeceased by her husband Jim (2007) and granddaughter Jill (1979). Marj was the only child of Leslie Douglas Hughes and Ellen Conway of Manchester, England. The family moved to Canada in 1927. They spent winters in Winnipeg and Edmonton and summers in Waterways. She was a very precocious child, and had a special gift for dance. She excelled at tap, and became a favorite child dancer in Edmonton bringing in the New Year at the MacDonald Hotel in 1929. She spent her summers biking and exploring. In Edmonton she went to boxing and football matches with her father who adored her and was likewise adored. In the fall of 1943 she was introduced to her future husband James (Jim) Taylor by an aunt. Jim was in the Royal Canadian Air Force and after his training in Edmonton they corresponded continuously. After the war, Jim and Marj were married in June of 1946. Their Edmonton house filled with two daughters and a son, and after they moved to Calgary their second son was born. Marj and Jim explored the world together: first with their kids in tow, often with friends, and later as a retired couple. They bused, cruised, drove and flew through Europe, Asia, all of North America and Australia. Marj was the gas pedal of their life, while Jim kept the car on the road with skilful steering and occasional braking. Life was punctuated by trips, parties and pregnancies. Kids were raised, graduations attended, and life was good. The energy for this existence came from Marj. She was a fantastic sports woman and always up for a challenge. Apart from dancing with Jim, she enjoyed swimming, tennis and golf. She picked up downhill skiing at fifty-five and was an active member at the Calgary Winter Club. In the last two years as her opportunities for exercise narrowed, she took special delight in vaulting off examination tables much to the chagrin of attending physicians. The Irish have a word for our mother - she was a Corker - fun, feisty and fearless. Her good cheer and zest for life filled our home with laughter and her grandchildren's hearts with love and admiration. Marj was not one to look back. She sat for a glamorous photograph and knowing the odds of Jim returning from war were only one in three, she sent the photo to Jim and two other servicemen. Given only two weeks to live, she set out to enjoy most of the next year introducing Happy Hour to the hospice. Facing a terminal illness, she refused to join the chorus of woe is me; and when, in her final hours she struggled to keep death at bay, she reminded us all, of the prize fighter she was in life. The Taylor family would like to thank the staff at the Agape Hospice where Marj lived for almost six months. The Agape is a special place filled with dedicated and beautiful people who made this last chapter of her life very special. DEAGAZIO, Giovanni - It is with great sadness that the family of Giovanni DeAgazio announces his passing on June 14, 2009, at St. Joseph’’s Care Group. Giovanni was born on July 15, 1917 in Torre Di Ruggiero, Cantanzaro, Italy. He came to Canada in 1958 after serving in WWII, to build a better future for his family, who joined him in 1962. Giovanni worked for CN Rail for 24 years, until his retirement in 1982. He had a passion for gardening and always celebrated life to the fullest. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family and friends and loved to entertain them with his harmonica. Giovanni is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Marianna; His children, Nick (Vincenza), Joe (Dolly), Giovanna (Alfredo) Fabiano, Gerardo, Tony (Joni), and Emilio (Anne); grandchildren Maria (Marco) Mollicola, Frank (Rosa) Fabiano, Marianna (Sam) Galeotalanza, Lisa (Fortunato) Scopacasa, John (Marie), Anthony (Lindsay), John (Alexandra) Fabiano, Michael (Andrea), Amanda (Derek), Daniel, Joshua, Nicole, Marcus, Jordan, Ellen & Benjamin; and great grandchildren, Julia, Mathew, Caitlyn, Brianna, Victoria, Francesco, Noah, Alyssa & Luca.
