DUNCAN, Constance A - It is with sadness we announce the sudden passing of Connie at McMaster University Hospital in Hamilton, on June 6, 2009. Beloved mother of Stanley (Nancy), Aileen, Myron, Sandy (Michele), Lucretia (Allan), Gladys (Rick), Pat, Gerry (Debbie). Proud grandmother and granny to Sheryl, Christina (George), David (Sarah), Monique, Kyle, Kris, Ken, Arethea, Amanda, Aleesha, Keesha, Cassandra, Thomas, Matthew, Justin, Lynsy, Tyson, Quinton and great- grandchildren Dylan, Christian, and Aaron. Sadly missed by her siblings Stephen, Stanley, Philip, Thelma, Marilyn and Carol. Predeceased by her parents Gordon and Lorna, brother Bill and sister Kathleen. Connie was a veteran of WWII, serving with the Canadian Women's Army Corps, was a member of the Women's Auxiliary Canadian Legion Branches 90 & 163. Connie was a leading member of the Breathworks Program at St. Peter's Hospital and will be sadly missed by all. A special thank you for Dr. Kinzie and staff at Stonechurch Family Medical Centre and Dr. Pugsley and Anne Bartlett for their longtime care and compassion. As per Connie's wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 17 at 11 a.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery, Brantford Ontario. A celebration of her life will be held following the service at Stewart Memorial Church, 114 John Street North in Hamilton starting at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Stewart Memorial Church Elevator Fund would be appreciated by the family. DURHAM, Ross - With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ross David Durham in the early morning of June 10, 2009, in his 89th year, with family at his side. Born to Mary Green and James Durham on the family farm in Beverly Township on May 4, 1921, Ross went on to raise his family on the same homestead, moving to St. George, then Vanessa, then Simcoe in his later years. Adoring and devoted father of Heather Durham, Lorraine Greey (Stephen LeDrew), and Meredith Durham (Bill). Loving grandfather of Ali and Meredith and step-grandfather of Lindsay, David, Michael and Victoria LeDrew. Beloved brother of Dorothy (Paul Witteveen), the late Duff (Muriel), Norma (Cecil Green), Roy (Doris), Burwell (June), Dan (Marianne), Mary (Jim Hunter), Gerald (Marianne), and the late Esther. Uncle, great-uncle, and great-great-uncle to a large and ever-growing family. Ross took great pleasure from his family, and from helping neighbours, friends, and even strangers. He could fix anything. Skating and dancing gave him a new lease on life after a near fatal illness in his fifties. He provided the music for skating and dance groups in St. George and Brantford, and belonged to a number of clubs in the area. In his final years he took delight in sponsoring music programs at Norview Lodge in Simcoe, where he spent his last three years, participating actively in every musical event that came along. Ross's family extends great appreciation to all who made him feel so at home at Norview Lodge and provided such loving care: the nurses, PSWs, and activity and support staff. Much gratitude also to Helen Jordan, who over the past year enriched Ross's life with many special outings and caring visits. In keeping with Ross's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at BECKETT-GLAVES FAMILY FUNERAL CENTRE, 88 Brant Avenue, Brantford, ON N3T 3H3 on Saturday, June 20th. RATZ, James Rayburn 'Ray' - Ray Ratz of North Bay, born June 29, 1921 passed away at the age of 88 years on June 11, 2009 at North Bay General Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents George and Effie Ratz of Restoule. Ray was born and raised in Restoule, and in his youth played hockey for Restoule and was an avid horseshoe player. From 1942 - 1946 he was in the armed forces and a member of the Canadian Legion North Bay Br. 23 for 30 years. He loved his card games and played as often as he could at the Legion and surrounding small towns. He and his companion of 15 years, Ann Gate, loved to travel and went to many places in Canada, U.S.A and Britain as well as wintering in Florida. He is survived by his companion Ann Gate, his brothers and sisters Vernon Ratz (Olga) of Huntsville, Violet Bain of Callander, Ken Ratz (Evelyn) of Powassan, Noreene Arthur of St. Agatha and their families. KURIATA, Lucy (Leokadia) - Peacefully and surrounded by her family at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Thursday June 11, 2009. In her 83rd year, “Lucy” Leokadia Kuriata (nee Walicka), beloved wife of the late Walter Kuriata. Loving mother of John Kuriata (Kathy), Regina (Ross Brown) and Stan Kuriata (Janet). Loved grandmother of Jonathan, Christopher, Amy, Nathan, Vanessa, Michael, Kristy, Matthew and five beloved great grandchildren.Lucy was born in Poland, she was forcefully deported to Siberia when Russia invaded. She survived the labour camps but lost her mother and many friends during the horrific evacuation from Siberia to Palestine. Lucy arrived in Canada in 1949, Walter and Lucy raised their family and finally found peace. She retired as a dietary aid at the General Hospital and enjoyed travelling widely and growing her garden. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Luce and Dr. Gruber for their efforts. The nurses and staff were a great comfort. Lucy could not have been in better hands. Friends may call at the PATRICK J. GOOD, Gordon 1933 - 2009 It is with great sadness that the Good family announces the sudden passing of Gordon, our beloved husband, father, and Grampy, on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. He was taken from us all too soon, at the age of 75. Born in Radcliffe, Lancashire, he immigrated to Canada with his wife, Jean in 1966. Gordon quickly found work with Campeau Corporation where he remained for 11 years until an opportunity arose for him to return to his love of teaching. Gordon spent the next twenty five years as the head of the Interior Design Dept. at Algonquin College, until his retirement ten years ago. Throughout his career, Gordon also performed freelance work for various other companies within Ontario. Gordon's love for life, his family and enormous circle of friends were his main priority and he made that clear daily with his kind and generous nature. He had a great passion for the performing and visual arts, and participated in several dinner groups where he enjoyed sharing fine food and wine with his many friends. He will be loved forever and missed so dearly by his wife Jean, daughters Jane (Trey), Emma (Alex) and his treasured grand-children Cameron and Thomas. The Good family would like to thank all their extended family and friends for their thoughts, care, and love expressed now and throughout Gordon's life. HOPE , Calvin Douglas February 25, 1956 - June 4, 2009 Calvin Douglas Hope of Calgary, beloved son, brother, uncle and brother-in-law passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the age of 53 years. Cal was born February 25, 1956 in Banff, Alberta and worked in the Banff area before moving to Calgary. Throughout his life, Cal was a voracious reader, with a particular love for science fiction novels. He was well read and outspoken on a variety of subjects. He was also an ardent golfer and skier, activities he greatly enjoyed sharing with family members. He was passionate about travel and hoped to visit Nova Scotia to attend his niece Katie's graduation in the fall. Cal owned his own business for a number of years, as a drywall installer and taper, working on a large number of projects in and around the City of Calgary. Cal's family was very important to him. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews when they were growing up, taking them on road trips and for family vacations. He was very close to his grandparents and other family members. Cal's courage and compassion for others in the face of his illness was remarkable. His optimism and independence of spirit never faded. He will be missed by his family and friends. Cal is survived by his mother Joyce; brother Bill (Susan); sisters, Terry (Steve) and Trish (Paul); nieces Katie (Ben), Cara, Caleigh, and Tarilyn; and nephews, Stephen and Timothy. He was predeceased by his father Bill Sr. and his by his grandparents. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wilma Jeannette Alexina Rodgers of Noonan, NB, wife of William Rodgers on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on July 13, 1939 in White Rapids, NB, she was the daughter of the late William and Olga Sturgeon. She was a member of St. Margaret's Anglican Church. Wilma was a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4, Fredericton, also a Life Member of Branch #4 Ladies Auxiliary, where she was president for two years, 2001-2002. Wilma was the bookkeeper for the family business. Wilma was a very strong and courageous person; she fought the battle with cancer on three separate occasions over the past 20 years. She loved the simple things in life such as gardening, flowers, picking berries, singing, dancing, sewing and cooking. Wilma's greatest joy in her life was her family. In addition to her husband of 47 years, William Rodgers of Noonan, NB, Wilma is survived by her two sons, Neil (Trina) and their children, Michelle, Matthew, Thomas and Jakob. David (Earla) and their children, Samantha, Cole and Jenna. Two daughters, Kelly (Vincent) Sturgeon and their children, Connor, Turner, Hunter and Lauren. Lana (James) Adamson and their children, Michael and Derek. She is also survived by three sisters, Yvonne (Paul) Dunn, Verna (Jack) MacDonald and Tammy (Gordon) Sturgeon; one brother, Clarence (Bonnie) Sturgeon all of Miramichi, NB. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. SCOTT , Brian Edward March 28, 1936 - June 10, 2009 With love and fond memories we announce the passing of Brian Scott, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend at the age of 73, who passed away peacefully at home in the loving arms of his wife Sheila. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba as a late surprise to his parents William and Annie (nee Mair). His father, William predeceased him when he was only two years old as did his brother Jack in 1944 while in the service of his country during WWII. Brian's care fell to his mother (d. 1997) and sister Margaret (d. 1996) who gave unselfishly of themselves in order that he would have an opportunity to succeed .. And succeed he did .. He studied History and Political Science at the University of Manitoba. He received his B.A. in 1957 and his LL.B. in 1961. He started his law career with Canadian Pacific and continued with them until 1972 when he accepted the position as City Solicitor for the City of Calgary. In 1976 he joined Fenerty Robertson Fraser and Hatch, was admitted to the partnership in 1978 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1986. In 1994 he was appointed Provincial Court Judge and from 1995 to 2007 served as Assistant Chief Judge in charge of the Civil Division of the Provincial Court of Alberta. From 2007 forward he continued as a Provincial Court Judge. Brian was Calgary Police Commission Vice Chairman 1981, Chairman 1982 - 1988; Co Chairman Security 1988 Winter Olympics; Calgary Police Museum Society (Vice Chairman) 1992 - 1998 and is an Honorary Officer of the Calgary Police Pipe Band. He was Officer Commanding of The Old 78th Fraser Highlanders (Hon. LT./Colonel) from 1993 to 1996. He was also recipient of Queen's Jubilee Medal and Alberta Centennial Medal for public service. Brian loved Christmas and was known as Santa for many years. He also loved reading, movies, and everything Scottish .. including his terriers. Brian is survived by his loving wife Sheila; sons David (Erika), Kyle (Lynn) and Andrew; daughter Kathleen (Doug) and his seven grandchildren that he loved so much Iain, Kristie, Jacklyn, Shayne, Alexandra, Jessie and Liam; brothers-in-law Roy and Leonard, sister-in-law Lenora (Mark); extended family of his heart who will miss him include: Ed and June, Gord, Kyra, Kari, Lynda, Phil, Sherry and his mini-wire Georgie Girl, to name a few. The family would like to extend their thanks to Nurses Next Door and Genesis for all their help in allowing Brian to pass away at home. Palliative help was so appreciated from Rockyview and Cochrane homecare. Also The Tom Baker Cancer Centre supported him immeasurably. SORENSEN, Bent “Benny“ - Suddenly at his residence on Wednesday June 10th, 2009 in his 64th year. Beloved husband of 41 years to Rosemarie Sorensen. Loving father of Dalanna Sorensen, Danny Sorensen and his wife Yvonne and Randy Hann all of Niagara Falls. Loved grandfather of Sarah, Robert, Nicole and Branden Sorensen. Brother of Annie McCann (Jim) of Niagara Falls, Birgit, Annette and Soren, all of Denmark. Surviving are many nieces, nephews and great friends. Benny will be missed by his puppy (Cupcake) Askur and his grand-doggies Tula and Otis. He was predeceased by his parents Tove and Chris Sorensen. Benny is known in the community as the owner and operator of the Daisy May Coffee Truck, which began in 1966. It was his passion second only to his wife children and family. At Benny's personal request, cremation has taken place. There will be a private service to take place on a later day.
