BOKOVOY, William (Bill) Passed away on June 2, 2009 at the age of 80. Son of the late Anthanasi Bokovoy and the late Zena Lahomsky. Beloved husband of Germaine Picard. Father of Peter and Debbie. Brother of Edna, of Chase, BC, John of Forest Grove, BC, and Sarah of Toronto and the late Victor, Boris, Alex, Paul, George, Tom and Willard. Bill grew up in Gatineau. He attended MacDonald College and Sir George Williams University. He worked at Frost Chemical in Montreal for several years then moved to Ottawa where he began a long career at Statistics Canada. Bill will be missed by his extended Picard and Bokovay families and his many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Elizabeth Bruyere Centre or the Palliative Care Outreach Program. GRANGER, Nancy Lynn It is with great sorrow that, after her long journey with cancer, announce the passing of Nancy Granger (nee Lamoureux) at the age of 52. She was the most adored wife and best friend of John Granger. The most beloved mother to her two children, Joey Granger (Charlene) and Lyndsay Doyle (Ryan). A devoted daughter to her most cherished parents, Thelma Lamoureux and the late Lucien Lamoureux. Nancy was a constant source of friendship and love to her only sister Susan Ladaroute (Joel). Nancy is survived by her aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and colleagues. Nancy will be greatly missed by her best friends Joan Farrell and Susan Pugh. Nancy had many long-standing, wonderful friends who were so deeply important to her. She will be missed for her wonderful spirit, her intense connection with life, family and friends. HEADRICK, Alfred Martin "Tom" (RCMP Assistant Commissioner, Ret.) Peacefully, in hospital, on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the age of 78. MARSON, Charles C. Peacefully on June 2, 2009 after a brief struggle with pneumonia. He was 77 and finally pain free after almost 30 years of Parkinson's disease, renal failure and other ailments. This strong, artistic, caring, patient, uncomplaining, funny, charming Australian joins his wife Kati Vita, whom he missed so much since her death in 2001. Living in Ottawa with his daughter Claire, he is also survived by a son in Calgary. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him in Canada, Australia, England and the U.S. Memorial gathering for friends and caregivers on June 11 from 5 pm to 7 pm at 92 Dufferin Road followed later by a private burial in Montreal. McKENDRY, Alexander "Spence" Air Traffic Controller (Retired) Peacefully with his family by his side on May 30th, 2009 in his 81st year at Kingston General Hospital. Beloved husband of Felicity (Bennett) McKendry for 53 years. Treasured father of David (Karen) Ottawa and Sandra (Jim Mundle) Calgary. Cherished grandfather of Chelsea, Matthew and Allie McKendry. Dear brother of Harold (Betty) McKendry and Carolyn Anglin (Graham). Fondly remembered by his niece Susan Kenney (Chris) and nephews Jeff (Geralyn) and Scott (Margaret-Anne) Anglin, and his great nieces, nephews and many relatives. Predeceased by his parents Alexander Harold McKendry and Olive McKee Spence. After attending Ontario Agricultural College, Spence worked in the farming business and was an active Junior Farmer. He later became a licensed pilot and was among the first to be trained as an air traffic controller, serving at Ottawa International Airport. Spence then moved to Air Traffic Control headquarters to become International Liaison Coordinator between Canada and the United States, Acting Director of the Transport Canada training centre now in Cornwall, and a specialist in technical services. Upon retirement, he returned to the Kingston area. Spence was a life-long member of the United Church of Canada and added his tenor voice to many choirs. He was a long standing volunteer with 'Meals on Wheels' and an ardent member of the Antique Classic Car Club of Canada. He fought valiantly yet lived gracefully with Parkinson's disease for over 20 years and was a pioneer recipient of a Deep Brain Stimulator in 1995. Spence's legacy will continue through tissue donation to Parkinson's research. In keeping with his wishes, cremation will be followed by a memorial service to celebrate his life at James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd. Kingston on Monday June 8th. Visitation at 1:00 pm and service at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow. Interment will be at Cataraqui Cemetery. SMITH, Leonard Fraser Leonard Fraser Smith, 83, of Bedford, passed away May 18, 2009, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born in Halifax he was a son of the late Leonard V. and Lena (MacKeen) Smith. He was educated at Tower Road School, Kings Edgehill, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Technical College and University of Toronto. He was employed by the Defence Research Board at the Department of National Defense in Valcartier, Que. and in Ottawa. During the Second World War he served with the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. During his years in Ottawa he was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. He retired in 1989 and moved back to Nova Scotia in 1995. He was a life member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Porte; daughter, Catherine Egan and her partner Jeremy Green, Courtenay, B.C.; son, Robert Smith, Ottawa, and his wife, Stephanie (Rusch); grandchildren, Andrew and Caroline Smith. He was predeceased by brother, Donald H. Smith. Funeral service was held on Saturday, May 23 at All Saints Church, Bedford, Nova Scotia. YORK, Joan Dolores (nee Paradis) Passed away peacefully on May 31, 2009, on a sunny afternoon in the backyard of the home she loved so much. Beloved wife of 45 years to Richard Mackay Brown York. Loving mother to Julie York, and Christine York and her husband, Derek Chapman. Cherished grannie to Alexander and James Chapman. Joan was born in Pentanguishene on May 6, 1941 to Alden and Dolores Paradis. She lived in many places throughout her life, including Ottawa, Detroit, Chicago, Markham, Ontario and, finally, South Surrey, British Columbia. In her life, Joan was a businesswoman, gardener, hostess, and above all, a dedicated, selfless, and loving wife, mother and grannie. Joan had many talents and brought her strong intelligence, passion, hard work, and warmth to everything she did. She instilled in her children the tremendous value of family and will be heart achingly missed. Joan was a great friend to many and the family would like to thank those who remained so close and helpful throughout Joan's life. The family would also like to thank those doctors and health care professionals who provided support through Joan's later years. At Joan's request, the family will be hosting an informal reception at the home she shared with Rick, in lieu of a formal service. Kind notes would be appreciated more than flowers. OBITUARY ELISABETH (BETTY) COUMBIAS 1935-2009 With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Elisabeth Coumbias on May 25, 2009, of cancer at Vancouver General Hospital. She leaves behind her husband of fifty years, George Coumbias; her two daughters, Juanita and Manuella; their husbands, Jean-Yves and Gary; and two grandchildren Joelle and Emmanuel. Betty was open, honest, loyal and caring and, to her friends and family, was a fierce friend who was always ready to listen and offer her counsel. She was never too busy for a chat and made friends wherever she went.. from the Aquatic Centre where she swam to the Granville Island Market, people knew her name and called her friend. She was caring to many and this has been reflected in all the wonderful messages the family has received on her behalf and we thank you for your kind thoughts. DARCY, Muriel Ann (nee Campbell) Muriel passed peacefully at Extendicare Mississauga on Thursday, June 4, 2009 after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Muriel, dear daughter of the late Gordon Campbell and Sadie McCabe, beloved wife of the late Hugh James (Jim) Darcy and loving mother of three sons, Brian (Bev), Gordon (Gayle) and Michael (Paulette). Muriel will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Karen, Christine (Miro Pusic), Kelly (Robert Rossl), Samantha, and Ryan and her great granddaughters Kira and Gabrielle. Muriel also leaves her brothers James Campbell (Ruth) of Montreal and Donald Campbell (Avie) of Mississauga as well as sisters-in-law Shirley (the late Bill Campbell) of Beverly, Massachusetts, Evelyn (Graham Beeby) of Haliburton, Ontario, and her mother-in-law Evelyn Darcy of Belleville, Ontario. Muriel will be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and friends in the United States and Canada. The family would like to offer our sincere thanks to the management and staff at Extendicare Mississauga for the wonderful and compassionate care offered to mom during her stay with them. McBRIDE, John (Jack) died on April 30, 2009 at the age of ninety-five. Born January 30, 1914 in Montreal, Qc. and predeceased by his wife Doris Evelyn (nee Wilson), April 7, 2000. Married in October 1939, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in October 1999. Jack's entire business career spanned every aspect of the advertising profession, retiring in 1970 as a Director and Senior Vice-President of Cockfield Brown and Company. In 1971 they pulled up stakes and moved to the West Coast. Commissioned into the Black Watch of Canada during WWII, Jack volunteered as a Canloan Officer to the British Army, landing on the Normandy beaches with the 7th Bn Black Watch in the 51st (Highland) Division. His father had served in the Imperial Black Watch in the First World War and died on the Somme in November 1916. "Canloans" were a special group of Canadian Officers who volunteered to serve in the British Army due to a shortage of British Infantry Officers for the forthcoming invasion of North West Europe. The life member of the 51st (Highland) Division Officers Club his memoirs of the Normandy bridgehead are deposited in the Black Watch Museum at Belhousie Castle Perth, Scotland. Beloved wife of sixty years to Mort, loving mother to Lorraine (Robert Domask), Brian (Bridget Madill), J.P. (Christine), Janet (Paul Pilon), caring grandmother to Jennifer, Alison, Cheryl, Melanie, Emily, Ben, Stephanie, Nathan, Shawn, Andree and Charlotte; and great-grandmother of Riece, Ada Rose, Dante, Samantha. McFARLANE, Elizabeth Joan Peacefully at Bluewater Health Norman Street Site, Sarnia on Thursday, June 4, 2009, Elizabeth Joan (Ganley) McFarlane, age seventy-nine of Point Edward. Beloved wife of John "Jack" McFarlane. Loving mother of Ken (Cheryl) McFarlane and Susan (Dan) Mumme. Cherished grandmother of Laura Mumme, Jason Mumme, Connor McFarlane, Leigh McFarlane, Geordie McFarlane, Andrew McFarlane, Ian McFarlane and Logan McFarlane. Survived by dearest sister Diana (Robert) Nielsen of Christieville, Que. Predeceased by sister Clare Ganley of NDG, Que. and brother Peter Ganley of Montreal, Que. Joan was a longtime and valued employee of Air Canada in Montreal, starting in the steno pool and retiring as a department manager. Joan and Jack moved to Point Edward from Montreal in 1991 to enjoy their retirement. She was active here and enjoyed bridge, line dancing, social and volunteering activities, primarily with the I.O.D.E., but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her husband John. Advancing Parkinson's disease eventually limited the former activities but couldn't begin to dim the latter. A special family thanks to the Staff of Vision Nursing Home, The Cardiac Care Unit as well as the Palliative Care Unit at Bluewater Health. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 8, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. HUNTER , Gordon Irvine January 13, 1917 - May 31, 2009 On Sunday evening Gordon passed away peacefully, at home, with family by his side, after 92 years, 4 months and 18 days of life. Born in Winnipeg, he brought his wife and young family to Calgary, in 1949, where they remained until moving to Kelowna 1996. Gordon was a very active Kiwanis Club member for many years and a very well respected member of the water and waste water industry throughout western Canada. Some of his favourite activities would include sailing, golf and holidays in Hawaii. Gordon was greeted on the other side by many loving people, as he was preceded by his wife of sixty years (Edna), his mother (Agnes) and father (John) and his three older sisters (Elsie, Margaret and Ina), as well as countless other friends and relatives. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by all the friends and family he has left behind. Gordon is survived by his three sons (Grant, Ross and Keith), two daughters-in-law (Bev and Del), six grandchildren (Megan, Gordon, Marc, Jenn, Jess and Jenny) and six great-grandchildren (Rhythm, Indy, Isabel, Claire, Shaila and Scott), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other friends, family and business associates. NICKLE , Rosemary June Victoria Rosemary June Victoria (nee Ellison), "Grandy", passed away quietly in the presence of family members on June 3, 2009, just short of her 88th birthday. Rosemary was predeceased by her beloved husband Sam C. Nickle in 1994, her daughter Suzanne in 2000, and her elder siblings Virginia Hesketh in 1984 and Albert Ellison in 2008. She is survived by her grandchildren Holliday Patriquin and Troy Patriquin and great-grandchildren Joseph, Tyler and Devin, her sister-in-law Margaret Ellison and numerous nieces and nephews. Her early years were spent pursuing a career in dance, and later her talents extended to millinery work, fashion and dressmaking. After being left a young widow and mother in the early years of WWII, she met and married Sam Nickle with whom she shared an active and fulfilling life involving philately, travel, support and promotion of Canadian artists and involvement with the Calgary Highlanders Regiment. Together, Rosemary and Sam were gracious hosts who welcomed hundreds of people into their home over the years. Rosemary's easy elegance and grace will be missed by all who knew her. ROTHNIE , John Melvin October 20, 1922 - June 3, 2009 It is with grateful hearts that we announce the passing of a fine gentleman, John Rothnie, at the age of 86 years. We are relieved that he is now free of pain and worry. As a Flying Instructor with the RCAF during WWII, John developed a life-long passion for flying. He was also a dedicated employee at Universal Ford for over forty years. John will be truly missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Larry Wearmouth as well as sisters May Robbins of Brandon, Manitoba and Betty Lane of London, Ontario. He was predeceased and now reunited with his wife Florence, of sixty years, and his parents, John and Lillian Rothnie.
