Devoted mother and mother-in-law of Roseanne and Yaacov Taube, Penny Rabinovitch, Natie and Heidi Rabinovitch. Proud grandmother of eleven, and great-grandmother of one. Dearest sister and sister-in-law of Millie and Sonny Laxer of Toronto, Nicole and the late Sam Lerman. Sister-in-law of Suzanne and Lionel Rabinovitch, Tsyvia and the late Abe Steinberg, Florence and the late Artie, the late Celia and the late Hy Bailey, the late Nettie and the late Norman Baily. She left this world for a better one with a smile. An extraordinary woman whose love, kindness and generosity for others were the foundation of her being. She unknowingly served and will serve as a role model for all those who had the opportunity to know her. LEAL, Evelina - After a long, but incredibly brave battle against cancer, Evelina passed away peacefully at the Carpenter Hospice, Burlington far too young at the age of 43. She was the devoted mother of Amanda and Christina, and loved greatly by Julia, Tony and her brother Allen. She was also a caring godmother to Denny and Nick. Evelina was loved by all who knew her, and those close to her were not surprised that she far outlived her original prognosis. She will live forever in our hearts. TURTON, Leonard - Born July 31, 1922, Northwich, England, passed away peacefully at Riverside Glen, Guelph, Ontario, on Friday, May 29, 2009, in his 87th year. Predeceased by his wife Hazel Margaret (Gray) Turton in 1987. Father of Leonard and Sam, Pappy to Teri, Jesse, and Zoe, Great Grandpappy of Tayler. Len served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, and during Spitfire flight training in Niagara, met and married Hazel Gray in St. Catharines. Len worked at Foster Wheeler Limited and became a manager of national and international projects, although many believe that coaching soccer was his real genius. As one of the founders of St. Catharines youth soccer, he won many awards regionally and provincially with Arsenal, later known as the Gunners. With Hazel's steady support, he became a mentor to many, many young people. Len requested simplicity at this time, and no ceremony - he preferred us to remember him each in our own way. Cremation will be followed by private internment at Victoria Lawn Cemetery with Hazel. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the St. Catharines Concord Soccer Club. CARNEGIE , Christina "Effie" January 14, 1917 - May 26, 2009 Effie Carnegie passed away peacefully on May 26, 2009 at the age of 92 years. Effie was born in Beulah, Manitoba, the fourth of nine children. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her daughter Leslie; grandchildren Jody (Vince) and Jamie; great-grandchildren Ethan and Brady; sister Betty (Andy) and brother Jim (Jean). Effie was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and Ernest; brothers Bob, Don, Bill, and Murray; sisters Mary and Jean and son-in-law Colin. She worked with the CPR for thirty-seven years. Effie was a caring and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved spending time with her family. She was a hard worker who was always busy and enjoyed being a very active member of Hillhurst United Church. Some of her interests and talents included gardening, knitting, sewing, and listening to the bagpipes. McDONALD , Florence Ethel (nee Boppre, nee Castiglione) July 19, 1926 - May 27, 2009 Florence of Calgary, passed away on May 27, 2009 at the age of 82 years. Florence was born on a farm in Carbon, AB, on July 19, 1926. She was the daughter of Vincent Castiglione and Agnes Saul, homesteaders from England who came to Alberta in 1905. She was the youngest of six girls, and has two younger brothers. Challenging times and a hard land that was Alberta in the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's shaped this family. Pioneering spirit and values of many Albertans can easily be seen in all members of the family. In 1939 the family moved from Carbon to Calgary. After the war she met and married Donald J. Boppre. Married for twenty-eight years, together they raised three sons and a daughter in Calgary, until his death in 1975. She remarried a very good boyhood friend of Donald's, Sylvester McDonald (Sam). They embraced both the joys and sorrows of life until Sam passed away in 1997. Mom was quick to ask you, "So what do you know for sure?" or when asked how she was doing her response was always, "Anybody I can, so watch out!" Let us just say she gave you fair warning. Left to mourn are her sons Gordon, Lorne (Jennifer), daughter Cindy (Dave), grandchildren, Julia (Ken), Erin (Mark), Melissa (Lucas) and Candice (John). She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Tailor, Lucas, Mike, Emma and Maya as well as brothers Vincent (Bev), Clifford (Verna), special niece Joyce McKinley and numerous other nieces and nephews. Florence was predeceased by her husbands, Donald Boppre in 1975 and Sylvester A. (Sam) McDonald in 1997, her son Robert Boppre in 1984, her mother in 1926 and father in 1962. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Agnes, Marie, Alice, Thelma and Lucielle. MEGER , Gordon John May 7, 1933 - May 29, 2009 Gordon passed away on May 29, 2009 at home after a lengthy and courageous battle with lung cancer at the age of 76 years. Gordon was born in Biggar, Saskatchewan in 1933, and spent his childhood on the family farm near Selkirk, Manitoba. In his youth, he pursued a professional hockey career before returning to Manitoba to complete his education. In 1958, he became a Chartered Accountant. He spent his early career with Sill Streuber Fiske in Winnipeg and relocated to Calgary in 1971. In Calgary, he continued his career as a sole practitioner where he loved to help his clients and built many valuable relationships. Gordon celebrated his fiftieth year as a CA in 2008. When he watched his children Gordon and Ingrid also become Chartered Accountants it only increased his pride in the profession. In 1974, he married Alice and the couple moved to their home in Lakeview Village. He loved to walk in North Glenmore Park, collecting golf balls along the fence of Earl Grey. Golfing was one of his passions, along with his red golf shirts. He was a member of Canyon Meadows Golf Club for thirty-five years, a place he loved to spend time with many great friends he made over the years. He spent magnificent summer vacations in Kelowna, where he loved the hot sunny weather, the beauty of the lake and of course, the many golf opportunities there. Since retiring (which often meant he only went to the office for a few hours a day instead of all day), he spent several winters in Hawaii with Alice. He cherished their morning walks by the ocean, coffee on the lanai and watching the sunset in Honolulu. He loved to stop into Duke's on Waikiki Beach and taking Alice to the Halekulani Orchid Room for a special dinner. Gordon leaves behind with loving memories, wife Alice; daughters Ingrid and Holly (Raqib); sons Keith and Gordon (Shelley); grandson Ian; brothers Edward (Nancy), Ernie (Pat), Paul, Walter (Phyllis) and Elmer (Lorraine); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers William and Werner; parents Eda and Albert; as well as sisters-in-law Betty and Nel. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at Canyon Meadows Golf Club (12501 - 14 Street S.W.). CRANHAM , Orva Josephine (nee: Sinclair) March 17, 1922 - May 28, 2009 Orva Cranham passed away in Sparwood, BC, on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the age of 87 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Norman (Erna) Cranham, of Calgary, Margaret (Blaine) Lee, of Silvertip Ranch, Winnifred (Brian) Gallelli, of Crossfield, and Dorothy Butterfield, of Sparwood; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; sister Eleanor Bridges, of Selkirk, Manitoba; brother Robert (Marlene) Hampson, of Kelowna, BC; and many more family and friends. Orva was predeceased by her husband Douglas Cranham, son Francis Cranham, and son-in-law Thomas Butterfield. Orva was born and raised in Selkirk, Manitoba. Due to the Depression, she started working at the age of fourteen and at the age of eighteen she met and married Doug Cranham. Doug was enlisted in the Air Force which took both him and Orva to places all over Canada and to Germany. They were the proud parents of five children, one of which was lost to SIDS at the age of four months. After Doug retired from the Air Force the family settled in Calgary and area. Orva loved raising her kids. Her family will always remember her for the way she took such loving care of them and how she was a friend to everyone. He leaves behind to mourn his loving daughters Adriana and Silvana, his sons-in-law Antonio (Tony) and GianCarlo and his beloved grandchildren Amanda, Isabel and GianCarlo. He will be sadly missed by his dear sister Rosalia (Lina), his brother-in-law Gaetano, his sister Carmela of Italy and many nieces and nephews. UHRICH, James Addision, DMin, BDiv, BSc Leaves to mourn his wife Margaret, son Brian (Heather) of Winnipeg, daughter Alanna of Toronto, brother David (Avril), mother Bernice, and sister-in-law Valerie Boddis (Ken) all of Winnipeg plus cousins Uhrichs, Wakemans and Luneys. Jim was active all his life within the United Church of Canada, beginning in his home church of Transcona Memorial as a Sunday School teacher, Young People's, Organist for the Senior Choir and eventually as a candidate for ministry. He was ordained June 2, 1968 by Manitoba Conference in Brandon, Manitoba and settled on his first pastoral charge - Hartney-Lauder-Dand. Throughout the 70's and 80's he served several churches in Winnipeg laterally as the Presbytery's first Intentional Interim Minister. In 1991 he accepted a call to St Andrew's United Church in Calgary where he served for 8 years. Since then he has ministered in various cities in Ontario. He was working as Supply Minister at Southminster United Church when he was taken ill in late January of this year. Jim had a love of music that enabled him to share a different side of himself. Whether it was playing guitar with the local high school group "Shane and the Divines" who played for burgers and shakes at a local drive-in or whether he played "boogie-woogie" on the organ for his friends when he was practicing at the church. In 1979, while working in a team ministry with Rev Ian Macdonald at Winnipeg's Augustine United, the two started writing songs at a workshop. Over the next few years they started writing with neighbourhood clergy, and together with Rev Bob Wallace and Bishop Gordon Light they formed "Common Cup Company." Over the years, Common Cup recorded 8 albums of original music for worship and with the addition of Richard Betts and Scott McDonald, continue to perform together whenever they can get a "gig". Jim will be missed when they provide leadership for Music Week at the Anglican Retreat Centre in Sorrento, BCis July. He will be there in spirit. The family wishes to thank the medical staff of Ottawa General Critical Care Unit for all the care given, with special thanks to Rev Doug Longstaff the Spiritual Director of Civic Hospital and the United Church Ministry Staff of Lillian Roberts (Presbytery), Debbie Aiken (Ottawa/Montreal Conference) and Rev Angela Bailey. The cards, letters, and phone calls from friends and members of the various congregations that Jim served, especially Southminster United in Ottawa were greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a donation in Jim's memory can do so to the United Church of Canada Mission and Service Fund or to a charity of your choice. BASSEN , Henry (Hank) December 1932 - May 2009 Henry (Hank) Bassen entered the presence of Jesus May 29. A life-long Calgarian, Hank was an NHL goaltender with the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins. Hank was married to Shirley Dippel until her passing and is survived by his appreciative children Shane, Brian, Sandy, Bob, Mark, and numerous grandchildren.
