GIBBONS, John Henry - Passed away suddenly at his family home in Barrie on Saturday, May 23rd, 2009. John Gibbons in his 55th year. Loving father of Megan and Robin both of Alberta. Beloved son of John Gibbons and the late Marie. Dear brother of Lorrie-Ann Montgomery and her husband Mark of Barrie and Colleen Mulholland and her husband Vince of Burlington. CARR, Rosanna (Rose) (Formerly Schumacker - nee Hummel) - Rose Carr died peacefully at Lady Isabelle Nursing Home, Trout Creek on Saturday, May 23, 2009. She was in her 98th year. Rose was predeceased by her parents Veronica (Albert) and Michael Hummel; her first husband Reuben Schumacker and by her second husband Harry Carr. She was the beloved mother of the late Cedric Hummel (Doris of Niagara Falls), Eileen Thompson (Roy) of Capreol, Mona Mandrusiak (Orest) of Victoria, B.C., and the late Patricia Chourinor. Rose is survived by 19 grandchildren and many, many great- grandchildren. She was the dear sister of Sarah Culbert and Ruby Loxton, both of Powassan and the late Viola Standish, Sylvester Hummel and Eugene Hummel. The Carr family will receive visitors at the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan on Tuesday, May 26 from 12:30 to 2:00 pm. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2:00. HILL, Joshua Shane - It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Josh, as the result of a car accident on May 23, 2009, in his 26th year. Josh is the son of Theda (Suzie) Hill and Glenn (Beanie) Johnson. Loving father of Austin Skye. Brother of Spring, Devin, Summer and Shawn, and Zack and Ashley. Beloved wife of the late Joseph Mulligan (1983) and dearly loved mother of the late Larry Mulligan (1985). Dear sister-in-law of Yolanda and Eileen Dal Bianco. GROSSI, Reginald Sr. - Peacefully surrounded by his family, Reginald passed away in his home on Friday, May 22, 2009, in his 81st year, after a valiant and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Mary (nee Vendromin). Loving father of Reg (Dianne), Leonard (Lauri) and Joseph. Cherished Gramps of Darryl (Stephanie), Mathew (Jennifer), Jennifer (Mike) and Sarah (Brad), and great grandfather (Papa) of Gage, Lillie and Jack. Reginald is survived by his brothers Paul (Jean), Tony (Anne), Pat (Rose), and by his sisters Agnes (the late Marino) and Angie (the late Jim), and also by many nieces and nephews. Reginald was very passionate about the art of plastering. He was happiest working on the work site where he mentored many a young apprentice. Reginald was also a devout parishioner and Usher at the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria and of St. Alfred's Church. Reginald will be missed by his family and friends, especially by all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A special thank you to Dr. Whitty for his compassionate care and kindness. Né à Scoudouc le 11 août 1918, il était le fils de feu Edmond et Elmire (Melanson) Melanson. Il laisse dans le deuil six enfants: Rose Murphy (Jim) de Scoudouc, Maurice (Annette), Jean-Paul (Claudette) et Phyllis Maillet (Fernand) tous de Moncton, Normand (Adrienne) et Suzanne Fougere (Don) tous deux de Dieppe; dix petits-enfants: Michel Melanson, Nicole Belliveau, Marc Melanson, Denis Melanson, Monique Melanson, Tim Maillet, Michel Maillet, André Melanson, Annie Melanson, Natalie Fougere; quatre arrière-petits-enfants: Danielle, Joshua, Noah et Meghan; trois beaux-enfants: Marie MacKenzie (Winston) de Moncton, Nadine LeBlanc (Randy) de Woodstock et Freddy Martin (Caroline) de Summerside. Il est précédé dans la tombe par sa première épouse, Lucienne (Belliveau) en 1975; sa seconde, Yvonne (Babin) Martin en 2007; une soeur et deux frères: Alcide, Arsène et Elda; ainsi qu'un bébé, Francis. La dépouille mortelle est exposée au Salon funéraire Frenette, 88 rue Church à Moncton (858-1900). Les funérailles auront lieu en l'église Christ-Roi à Moncton le jeudi 28 mai à 11h. David Brockie, 94, of Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Sunday, May 24, 2009 at his residence. Dave was born Sept. 25, 1914 in Alexandria, Man., the son of John Brockie and Harriet Higgensen. He later apprenticed as a watchmaker in Portage la Prairie, Man. Dave came to Fort Frances in February, 1938 to pitch baseball and worked at Gledhill’s Jewellery. That year, Dave had the option of attending a professional baseball school in Hot Springs, Ark. or playing pitcher for the Fort Frances team—a very active club at that time. Jack Cargill, a CNR employee at the Express office, knew of Dave’s ability and arranged a job for him as a clerk and watch repairman for George Gledhill, a jeweller on Mowat Avenue. Dave never regretted his choice, continuing to live in Fort Frances ever since, enjoying Rainy Lake both summer and winter. He was happiest when boating and showing others the beauty of the area. Dave gained the reputation as an excellent pitcher, with one sportswriter stating in an article that “Brockie turned in nine innings of superb baseball.” He was nicknamed “Diamond Dave” because diamonds were involved in both his sport and his business. For severals years, Dave sponsored the Brockie’s baseball team from 1948-55, as well as juvenile hockey teams. Dave joined the RCAF in 1940, serving until his discharge in 1945. Dave met his wife, Mildred, daughter of Bruce and Belle Lloyd, in Fort Frances. They were married in Toronto in November, 1942 as Dave was en route to England, where he spent two years at Topcliffe, Yorkshire working on Halifax bombers with the RCAF. Shortly after his return to Fort Frances after WWII, he purchased the jewellery business from Mr. Gledhill in 1947. The new business, Brockie’s Jewellers, was first on Mowat Avenue until, in 1962, it ws moved to the Lloyd Building at 255 Scott St. Dave was joined at the new location by his son, Ted, a certified gemologist, and by Orla Thomassen as watchmaker. Their official opening was held May 9, 1962. Clerks included Marlene Ervich, Elaine (Carpenter) Hogan, Ingrid (Martin) Gushulak, and Elsie (Macedon) Ward. Dave was highly-respected in his business dealings, and for his kindness and thoughtfulness, and enjoyed his customers very much. He retired in 1980, with Ted taking over the business. Dave waas active in the Boy Scouts, both in Portage la Prairie and Fort Frances, as Scoutmaster and later as a member of the District Council of the Boy Scout Association. He also was one of the charter members of the Fort Frances recreation commission, a member of the rink committee of that board, and he participated in the reorganization of senior hockey in Fort Frances. Dave was a member of the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, receiving his 50-year pin in 2000. He was an ardent supporter of the Kiwanis Sunny Cove Camp project. He also was a Sunday School teacher at the United Church and, earlier, at St. Andrew’s Church, he served on their board of managers. As well, he was a member of the sportsmen’s club and the Canadian Wildlife Federation. He and his wife were founding members of the Fort Frances Museum, and they also supported the SOS Heritage Building Group. Dave is survived by his wife, Mildred; son, Ted Brockie (Ruth) of Fort Frances, Ont.; daughter, Helen Moszynski (Richard) of Winnipeg, Man., five grandchildren, Lisa and Craig Brockie, Jennifer and Chris Moszynski, and Sherri Gackley; and three great-grandchildren, Skylar and Ronan Brockie, and Ryan Aptekmann. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 29, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances, with Rev. Barbara Miller officiating. Isabelle Cormier - C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès d’Isabelle Cormier, survenu à l’Hôpital régional d’Edmundston, le dimanche 24 mai 2009, à l’âge de 82 ans, après une courageuse lutte contre le cancer. Née à Edmundston, elle était fille de feu Vital Cormier et de feu Régina Pelletier. Elle manquera beaucoup à son époux, Lionel Roy. Elle laisse aussi dans la peine son frère, Robert (Claudette Bossé) et ses soeurs: Louise (feu Claude Boudreau) et Colette, ainsi que plusieurs neveux et nièces, tous d’Edmundston. Ses frères, Yvon (Hermance Martin), Lionel et Paul (Gisèle Albert) et sa soeur, Germaine (feu Walter LeBel), l’ont précédée dans la tombe. On se souviendra d’Isabelle en éducation où elle a oeuvré pendant 37 ans. Elle a enseigné 12 ans. Elle a été conseillère pédagogique et consultante en évaluation pendant 25 ans. Elle s’est aussi dévouée au scoutisme et au guidisme pendant 25 ans. Au diocèse, elle a oeuvré en catéchèse et en liturgie, aux mouvements la Rencontre, Renouement conjugal, Développement et paix et Service préparation aux mariages. En paroisse, elle a fait partie de chorales et de liturgie. La dépouille mortelle sera exposée au salon Guy O’Regan, 515, boul. Everard Daigle à Grand-Sault, le mardi 26 mai, de 14h à 16h, et de 19h à 21h. EGAN, Joseph Martin - 87, died May 22, surrounded by family, at Sarnia's Bluewater Health, where he'd spent six months struggling to get home. Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia (Huggins), and loving children Phil (Laurie) of Oakville; Larry (Rita) of St. Catharines; Vince (Marilyn) of Sarnia; Barbara (Ian) of Sarnia; Beverly (Dave) of Courtright; Mary-Jane (Peter) of London; Vici of Hong Kong; Paul of Detroit; and Cort (Tara) of Hamilton. He is also survived by step-children Nancy (Jeff); Terry (Maria); and Gayle, all of Sarnia; and by a sister, Theresa Foley, of Toronto. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Joe is predeceased by his first wife, June (2000) and daughter Frances June (Moe) Egan (1985) and brothers Vince (1988) and Frank (1989), sister Mary Cowley (2000) and parents Vince and Annie. Joe was born March 6, 1922 in Toronto, and moved as a youngster to Point Edward and later, Sarnia. Joe attended SCITS (Sarnia Collegiate and Technical School) specializing in electricity. When the Second World War began, Joe enlisted in the Navy and served valiantly during the Battle of the Atlantic, as HMCS Prince Rupert's electrical artificer. In 1944, the Prince Rupert sunk the German sub U-575 and Joe guarded German prisoners. It was while on furlough in Hamilton that Joe met June. The couple raised 10 children and operated a successful family business, Power Installations (Sarnia) Ltd. A Master Electrician, Joe was 29 when he launched the electrical-mechanical contracting business that helped build the Chemical Valley and employed hundreds of skilled tradesmen. Joe always made time for his kids, who fondly remember trips to Niagara Falls and Expo '67 in a city bus converted to a camper that slept the entire family. In 1985, the Egans' youngest daughter, Frances, died in a house fire. The family successfully pushed for a groundbreaking smoke alarm bylaw. Joe and June were named to then Sarnia mayor Marceil Saddy's honour roll. That same year, Joe contacted the surviving crew of the U-575 and an amazing reunion was held in Germany, with Joe and June staying at the home of the sub's former captain. Joe was proud of his war record and this lesson in forgiveness and redemption, often speaking to students on Remembrance Day. He was also proud of his three grandsons who served in Afghanistan. Joe was an artist, writing articles, producing videos, and working on books about the war, his life, and other subjects. In the late 1990s, June developed Alzheimer's disease and Joe was her loving, patient caregiver, insisting she be cared for at home where, as he put it, she felt safe. After June's death, Joe rekindled a romance with a high school sweetheart. He and Virginia wed that same year - a union that extended and enriched Joe's remaining life. Joe was a longtime member of the Sarnia Rotary Club, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, the Sarnia Construction Association and the National Electrical Contractors Association. Friends will be received at STEWART FUNERAL HOME, 254 George St., on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday. ARMSTRONG, Deborah Lee (Mousley) - Passed away suddenly at the Ottawa General Hospital on Thursday, May 21, 2009 with her loving family by her side. She was predeceased by her infant son Curtis in 1990. She is survived by her husband Paul and loving daughter Katherine. Also, survived by her adoring parents Art and Ileen Mousley, sisters Darlene Sprowl (Terry) and Tammy Senkus (Arvydas), in- laws Elizabeth and Paul McCormick, John and Pamela Armstrong, and Charles and Ann Armstrong. Nieces: Kristen, Kristina, Kaitlin and Ashley. Nephews: Neil, Alexander and Jason. Deborah was born in Timmins in September 1958 and attended Schumacher Public School and Roland Michener in South Porcupine. She attended Mohawk College/ McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario in Physiotherapy. She worked at home care as a Physiotherapist and managed the Physiotherapy Department at the St. Mary's General Hospital. With her exceptional gift she opened up her own clinic and touched the lives of many individuals in the Timmins area. Deborah was a kind, compassionate and loving individual who took great joy in healing her patients. She always managed to find time to be active in the community, such as Access Better Living for more than 20 years. The past few years she has been involved on the board, and served as President of the Timmins Symphony Orchestra. McORMOND, Robert (Bob) John - The family announces with sorrow his death on Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - Laurentian Site. Bob was 73 and was born in Sudbury. Beloved husband of Patricia Louise (Maloney); father of Christina (predeceased), Russell (Rina), James (Josee); brother of Ed (Mina), Ken (June) both predeceased, Walter (Marion), Mildred (predeceased) (Bill), Leonard, Muriel, Charles, Lillian (predeceased) (Neil) and special sister-in-law Hulda. Bob and Pat married in June of 1963 at St. Stephens on the Hill United Church where they still attend. Bob was a member of the choir, Church Council and the Property Committee and participated in the church Out of the Cold program. Bob was President of the Shuniah (Sudbury) Foresters and helped organize many bowling tournaments and social events. Bob and family were active members of the National Family Campers and RVers and enjoyed camping all across Canada and the U.S. Bob worked as a mechanic at several automotive business including Woolco Automotive and Canadian, then upgraded his education and worked as a supply teacher and then taught Small Motors and Engines courses at Cambrian College. Special thanks to the Doctors and Nurses of the Palliative Care Department of the Laurentian Hospital. DONNELLY, Mary Loretta (nee O'Brien) - Passed away peacefully in the loving presence of her family on Friday, May 22nd, 2009 at St. Joseph's Health Centre at age 81. Daughter of Marie and Francis O'Brien (both predeceased) and sister to Michael Lawrence O'Brien (predeceased) of Toronto. Mary studied languages at the University of Toronto when she met her husband Hugh Donnelly at a dance class at Newman College where they later married in 1951. Moving to Sudbury shortly thereafter, Mary and Hugh established a good circle of friends while raising their three children. Although quiet by nature, Mary celebrated life enjoying the good company of friends, travelling extensively and reading anything she could put her hands on. She was truly happiest when surrounded by her family, a handful of books and a bundle of newspapers. Always putting others first, Mary gave generously of her time to many organizations. She was a longtime member of the Sudbury Chapter of the IODE. Mary was president of the parent- teachers association of St. Michaels Elementary School and served as Secretary of the National University Women's League during the 1960's. Blessed with a natural curiosity and a thirst for knowledge, Mary would often assume the role of chief researcher when helping her children with their school assignments. Not surprisingly, Mary was appointed Chair of the Sudbury Public Library in the mid 1970's. While books and newspapers were her greatest companions, she also loved to watch movies since her childhood days in Toronto. To her delight in 1999, Mary attended the 50th anniversary of her convocation at the University of Toronto with husband Hugh and daughter Maureen where she met fellow graduate, film director Norman Jewison. A person of simple pleasures, Mary took great delight in her family, whether it was sharing a newspaper on the deck with her husband Hugh, watching movies late into the night with her daughters Maureen and Joanne or enjoying the comfort of seeing her son Mark napping on the couch whenever he came to visit. Sadly missed by her husband Hugh of 58 years, her children Mark (wife Claire Zuliani), Maureen (partner Glenn Moffett) and Joanne (husband Brian Giles) and her five grandchildren Caroline, Christopher, Logan, Jennifer and Mitchell, predeceased by her brother Michael Lawrence O'Brien. LATHROP, Mr. Daniel Whiting Died peacefully at his home, on May 20, 2009 at the age of 95. Predeceased by his wife Margaret Helen Davison-Lathrop (January 2009). Survived by his children: Margot Helen Brebner, Mississauga, Ont., Harold Doran Lathrop, Welland, Ont., John Howland Lathrop, Upper LaHave, Nova Scotia, G. Edward (Ned) Lathrop, Ottawa, Ont., and Anna Hildegarde Lathrop, Effingham, Ont. Whiting leaves 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and his sister Leah Lathrop Walls (b. 1919) of Colorado. Born in 1913 in Dunkirk, New York, Whiting's family moved to Welland, Ont., in 1923. He graduated from the University of Toronto (B.Sc., metallurgy, 1938) and worked for Thompson Products (1939) and Union Carbide (1940-1950). He became Director of Atlas Steel, Welland, in 1948 and President of Welland Electric Steel in 1953. In 1959 he formed Beamer-Lathrop Construction, and retired in 1968. Whiting served on the Board of Governors at St. Andrew's College, Aurora. He also served on the Board of Governors/Board of Trustees at Brock University, St. Catharines (1965-1974). A legendary golfer, he was a member of the Lookout Point Golf and Country Club (Fonthill) since 1923. An outdoor sports enthusiast, his passion for the preservation of wilderness led him to gift 70 acres in Pelham (1998)-- identified at the Lathrop Nature Preserve-- to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Nature Conservancy of Canada or Brock University. The memorial service will be conducted at St. David's Anglican Church, 369 Thorold Rd., Welland, Ont., on Saturday, June 6th 2009 at 2:00 pm.
