Aunt Madolyn will be very sadly missed by many great nieces and great nephews and their families. Madolyn was a lifelong member of Central United Church. RIDER, Patricia - Passed away peacefully on Saturday March 7, 2009 at the St. Catharines General Hospital in her 89th year. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Walter Disney Rider (1991). Proud grandmother of the late Eric Saumure, Daniel and Matthew Zold, and Andrew and Nicholas Butty. She will be missed by her cousins Elizabeth Papp, Louis Papp, and Dr. Richard Kerekes (Valerie), and by her extended family in Hungary (Gelse and Szabolcs). Mrs. Mocsan was born in Welland where she lived all her life. She taught in Welland schools for many years. SOWA, Paulette (nee Bourdages) - After a courageous battle with cancer, Paulette Sowa (nee Bourdages) of Welland, passed away in her 73rd year, peacefully on March 8, 2009 with her daughters by her side. She was predeceased by her loving husband John. Loving mother of Cheryl and her husband Jamie Buckborough of Hagersville, Diane and her husband Rob McGivern of Cambridge. She will be sadly missed by her 6 grandchildren Ryan (Abby), Braden, Joshua, Caitlyn, Owen and Brody, and her 3 great-grandchildren Nolan, Natalie and Rianne. BEDFORD, Duncan -- Veteran WWII Friday, March 6, 2009 at the age of 87. Beloved husband of the late Kay (nee Rodgers). Dear father of James (Bonnie) and Rod (Jennifer Paul). Cherished grandfather of Melanie Bedford, Lara Davis (Jamie), Dan Bedford (Stacey), Hollie Bedford and great-grandfather of Kristyn and Charlotte Davis and Miles Bedford. Dear brother of John, Ozzie, Peggy and Gordon. Predeceased by sister Mary and brothers Cyril and Charlie. Duncan was a Silver Life Master in Contract Bridge and a WWII Veteran, having served in Europe. He was honoured with The 1939 - 1945 Star, The France and German Star, Canadian Forces Decoration and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was also a prolific golfer, curler and fisherman. He was Director of the Investigations Division for Revenue Canada and a Registered Industrial Accountant until retirement. The care at the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre was greatly appreciated. A Family Service will be held. Interment Pinecrest Cemetery. FLYNN, Mildred (nee Cartier) On an unseasonably warm March 6th day, 2009, as the sun broke through and afternoon skies cleared, Mildred cast off comforted by the presence of all of her immediate family. Mildred was the only daughter of Joseph Albert and Annie Mary Cartier (nee Chevrier), born on the 19th of April 1921 in the middle of Alberta (Stettler), in the middle of 5 brothers, William, Albert, George, Howard and Wilfred, all of whom predeceased her. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, James and her three grateful children John, Kathleen and Gregory, their spouses, 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Mildred was raised in Alberta, but lived and brought up her own family in Ontario, Alberta, London (UK) and British Columbia. She was a gracious and charming woman. She enjoyed the arts, lively bridge and despite a deep loathing of water sailed both Lake Deschene in Ottawa and the Gulf Islands of B.C., navigating Jim and various dogs down the centre of every channel. She dressed beautifully and knew what it meant to be a lady. Mildred endured the Alzheimer's journey with dignity and was lovingly cared for by the staff at the Westmount Nursing Home in Kitchener-Waterloo, where Jim continues to live. Family is deeply appreciative for all her personal, medical and spiritual care. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer's Society where you live. OBITUARY WILLIAM O. BUSAT 1918 - 2009 Passed away peacefully on March 6, 2009 with family at his side. He had just celebrated his ninetieth birthday on December 20, 2008. He had a long and distinguished career in health care administration and consulting, including thirty years at St. Mary's Hospital in Montreal, retiring as Executive Director in 1986 to continue his career as President of Busat & Associates, an international consulting corporation. He served as Special Advisor to the Minister of Social Affairs of Quebec and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Health as well as Fellow and Regent for Quebec of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. MARTIN, Michael Peter With his family at his side, Michael Martin died peacefully on March 5, 2009, at the age of 54. Born and raised in Montreal, Michael was an avid outdoors man, nicknamed "Madman Martin". He worked as a journeyman/typographer at the Montreal Star and the Montreal Gazette before moving to Toronto where he eventually opened his own business, MPath Inc. Michael found his calling teaching Computer Graphics. He is survived by his parents, Peter Martin and Johanna Martin, his brother Andrew (Sandra Walker), nieces Courtney and Jayclyn Martin, sister Jennifer (Robert Kepes), niece Victoria and nephew David Kepes. We will miss his irreverent sense of humour, his intellect and his deep "radio voice". OBITUARY ANNIE RAMSAY SHAW (nee Ferguson) Annie Ramsay Shaw (nee Ferguson) died peacefully in her ninety-sixth year at the Glebe Centre in Ottawa, at 1:30 p.m., March 5, 2009. She is survived by daughter Sandra Fraser and son, John Shaw, and was Grandmother to Douglas, Lyle, Miranda, and Meaghan and great-grandmother to Sadie. Annie was happily married to Lawrence Douglas Shaw for 39 years whom she met by editing his spelling queries while working at the CP Rail. Later, both volunteered at the Montreal West Community Centre and enjoyed playing bridge there. Annie spent most of her life nourishing family members and working as the best secretary for her daughter at age 86-92 and enjoyed her days spent at the Perley Rideau Veterans Day Hospital from 2003-January 2006 and was loved by her family. Many thanks to the exemplary staff at the Glebe Centre. Annie Shaw will be missed by all. FERGUSON, Judith August 4, 1933 - March 7, 2009 Judith Ferguson, loving and generous mother, sister, wife and grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2009 surrounded by her children at the Foothills Medical Centre. Judy was born in Montreal, QC, and moved west with her husband Fergie and their children in the early 70's. She embraced the West, involving herself in the Samaritan Club and the church, as well as enjoying tennis, golf and bridge. Her warmth and selflessness inspired all who knew her and she was always ready with words of encouragement and a positive attitude. She carried that positivism right to the end of her battle with cancer. Judy will be greatly missed by her three children, David (Jen), Alec (Wendy), and Andrea (Andrew); her grandchildren, Johanna, Tessa, Eliza, Bridget, Nigel and Winston; her sisters, Nancy, Audrey (Alan) and Mary (Don). ISON, Kenneth February 14, 1933 - March 7, 2009 Kenneth Ison passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the age of 76 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marie Ison; his son Robert (Carolee) Ison; and his daughters Lori (Bill) Cox and Brenda (Michael Schiller) Ison. Kenneth also leaves behind his grandchildren Chris Ison, Daniel Kenney, Stephanie Kenney, Matthew Cox, Taylor Cox and step-granddaughter Miranda Schiller. He will be missed by his sister Corrine; his sisters-in-law Marge and Jackie; as well as numerous cousins. Kenneth worked for seventeen years with the Canadian Pacific Railway and then, at the age of thirty-three, finished his high school and went on to receive his Bachelor of Education. He then taught for twenty-five years at Ernest Manning High School and Crescent Heights High School before retiring in 1992. He enjoyed spending his free time camping and fishing in the mountains and on the British Columbia coast. SAWCHUK, Teresa Stephanie "Terry" July 15, 1959 - March 5, 2009 "Some people seem to specialize in being kind and generous while doing thoughtful deeds for other people" - A. Bradley. Teresa Stephanie Sawchuk passed away peacefully at the Sarcee Carewest Hospice on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the age of 49 years. Teresa was born in Edmonton and graduated from Louis St. Laurent High School. She earned a nursing degree from the University of Alberta, and began her career at the U of A Hospital as a surgical nurse and education leader. She worked with AADAC in Grande Prairie as an addictions counsellor and detoxification nurse. Later, Teresa worked at Nav Canada as an occupational health and safety nurse, and with Life Mark in Edmonton. A trip to Kona, Hawaii allowed her to fulfill her dream of missionary work. Since 2007, Terry worked as the site nurse for Ellis Don Construction at Foothills Medical Centre. Teresa was devoted to her faith. She was beautiful, kind and always had time to help others feel better about themselves. Teresa reached out and gave from the heart, living a simple and fulfilled life. Teresa is survived by her mother and father, Elizabeth and William Sawchuk; sisters Debbie Dymianiw (Jim Dymianiw), Barbara Sawchuk (Robert Sulatycky), and Judy-Lynn Sawchuk (Stephen Paskevich); and nieces and nephews, Dayna-Lynn, Deanna, Katia, Michael and Elena, whom she considered to be her children. Alvin Duncan MacNaughton, husband of Harriet MacNaughton, of Henderson St., Miramichi, passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital, on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the age of 76. Born in Chatham, on May 4, 1932, he was the son of the late Sinclair and Willemina (Lockerbie) MacNaughton. He was an accountant by profession and a former employee of Geo. Burchill co. Ltd., W.S. Loggie Co. Ltd., Wm Gregan Trucking Ltd., Northeast machine Works Ltd. He was a member of St. Andrews United Church, Miramichi; a member and former treasurer of the Session; a member of the Community Kitchen Program; a member of the Miramichi Golf and Country Club; a member of the Miramichi Chapter of the Highland Society; a member and former treasurer of the Riverside Cemetery Committee. He is survived by his wife, the former Harriet Jardine; one daughter, Shelley Lovely (Darrell), of Fredericton; one son, Paul MacNaughton (Nicola), of Riverview; five grandchildren, Matthew and Becca MacNaughton, Mikayla, Jason and Ashley Lovely; two sisters, Leona MacLean (Harrison), of Black River Bridge and Elizabeth Godfrey (William), of Moncton; one brother, Fred MacNaughton (Joan), of Riverview; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant brother, Samuel Emmett MacNaughton. Visitation was at the funeral home on Friday. The funeral service was held from St. Andrews United Church, on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight. A musical prelude was played by William Sweezey and the music for the service was provided by David Mann. The hymns were "In The Bulb There is A Flower", "I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry" and the recessional hymn was "God Be With You Till We Meet Again". The men's choir sang "You Have Come To The Lakeshore." Family remembrances were given by daughter in law, Nicola MacNaughton and the scriptures were read by niece, Carla Smith. The honorary pallbearers were Harold Bird, Jim Guimond, George Hickey, John Hanna, Duncan Jardine, Sherman MacDiarmid, Henry Wilson, Bill Sweezey, Jim Simpson. The active pallbearers were Garth MacLean, Brian MacNaughton, Keith Godfrey, Matthew MacNaughton, Olden Court, Ralph Campbell. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, later in the spring.
