Merle will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Born in McKerrow, Merle worked for Falconbridge for 37 years. He was a dedicated volunteer for the building of St. Kevin's Parish as well as a charter member of the Knights of Columbus #7368 and the choir of St. Kevin's Church. He enjoyed wood working, especially making toys for his grandchildren and crafts for the CWL Christmas Tea, biking on Muskrat Trail with grandchildren and camping at Holiday Haven (Manitoulin Island). The family would like to thank all the wonderful Hillcrest staff at St. Joseph's Villa for the wonderful love and care you have given Merle and for the exceptional support you have given us. DERGANC, Stanley - June 19, 1939 - Jan. 10, 2009 - The family announces with great sadness the passing of their brother Stanley Derganc at the age of 69 yrs. He passed away peacefully at The Timmins & District Hospital on Jan. 10, 2009 surrounded by family and friends. Stanley is survived by his brothers Edward (Muguette) St-Antoine, Quebec, Matt (Rejeanne) St-Eustache, Quebec, John (Gloria) Sudbury, and Leo of Porcupine. Stanley will be missed by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Stanley was predeceased by his father Matthew in 1968, his mother Louise (nee Ivec) in 1990, and by his brothers James, Joe and his sisters Helen & Elsie. Stanley was born in Rouyn-Noranda where he resided for close to 35 years until he moved to Val Caron, On., with his Mother Louise. Later on Stanley moved to Cochrane then on to the Extendicare Residence in Schumacher. It was then that Stanley became involved in The Cochrane Temiskaming Resource Centre's Day Program. Stanley later moved to the Blahey Court Group Home where he resided for the next 10 years. He quickly found his way into the hearts of those living and working at the group home. His pleasure was to tease. He loved to sneak around and play a joke on someone when they weren't looking, then all the while watching and laughing in anticipation of their reactions. No matter how often he would do this he always found it funny. Stanley had many friends who supported him in his home, at the CCS Day Program as well as the Handi-Trans drivers who “had a date with him twice a week“ for several years. Stanley will also be greatly missed by his brother Leo. Stanley was truly Leo's best friend. Leo visited Stanley almost every day and he always knew how he was feeling. They had a bond that only brothers have. Stanley's warm and welcoming smile will always be remembered by those who knew him and loved him. There will be a memorial service in the spring. 11385183

HERRMANN, Norma Mae It is with profound sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Norma on December 25, 2008, in her 72nd year, at the Vancouver General Hospital. Norma is survived by her loving husband Don, children, Peg (Mark) of Calgary, AB, and Dan (Nadia) of Burlington, ON. Of special delight were her five grandsons, Jacob, Gregg (Kara) and Adam (Dan) Parsons, Liam and Landon Herrmann. Treasured siblings include, Anna, Audrey (Glen), Ray (Marj), Eleanor (Doug) and Marion (Gene). Norma is also survived by her stepfather Joe (Lil) Herold and sister-in-law Joan (Clarence) Veenstra. She is also survived by Don's family, Alvina, Bill (Eileen), Ed (Lorraine), Gerine (Gerry), Ruby (Bob), Marlene, and Ron (Diane), as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and their families. Norma also leaves behind many great friends. Norma was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Myrtle Hutchinson and her beloved brother Robert (Bob). DUNDASS, Dr. Roberta Phelps (Beister). Age eighty-eight, passed away peacefully in Magog, Quebec on December 26, 2008. Wife of the late Harry Beister (Kalamazoo, Michigan), she leaves her brother George Dundass (late wife Doris), and is predeceased by her brothers Charles Howard Dundass (Muriel), and John Dundass (late wife Edythe). For decades, Roberta was one of the first and best specialists in pediatric dentistry in the Montreal area. She and her brothers practiced together in their Westmount office for more than thirty years. Roberta will be sadly missed by her ten nieces and nephews, Helen Dundass (Norm), Murray Dundass (Trish), Donna Young (Kevin), Debbie Dundass (Gerry), Bruce Dundass, Barbara Dundass (Dave), Judith Mitchell, John Dundass (Joanne), Chris Dundass (Peter), and Julie Hamilton (Bob). Through the years she enjoyed visits from many grandnieces and grandnephews, including Maggie Hamilton and her late brother Tim Hamilton, children of Julie and Bob Hamilton. She also leaves behind her good friends, Norman Gordon, Michel Brien and Johanne Langlois who cared for her for the past eleven years. John served in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Canada, Korea, Continental Europe and Cyprus from May 16, 1945 to January 20, 1973, retiring as a Regimental Sergeant Major. John served in the RCMP for eight years as a Special Constable. He subsequently worked with the Alberta Forestry Service. PALFENIER, Otto Albert Joseph November 13, 1938 - January 12, 2009 Otto Albert Joseph (Al) Palfenier (Brother James, Third Order of St. Francis) of Calgary passed away after a short fight with cancer on Monday, January 12, 2009 at the age of 70 years. Otto was born on November 13, 1938 in Medicine Hat, AB. Al devoted some years as Scouter "Al" with 44th Scout Group of Scouts Canada. He was owner of Al's Flower Delivery, Al's Courier Division, After Hours Delivery, then after 1993, transfer ownership of Al's Courier Division, then worked with new owner until 2000, then left after a short time went to work for Monarch Messenger, working on putting incoming calls into their computer until he retired. He served in the Canadian Army with; The Black Watch, Royal Canadian Dragoons, Canadian Guards, 2 PPCLI and RCASC for a total of ten and a half years. Al has been fighting the DND, Canadian Government and DVA since 1980 for a pension. His hobby has been genealogy since age ten, and since the internet, got everything he had on the internet under PALFENIER CONNECTIONS. In addition to having over 668,338 people linked to the family trees and has been assisting people with finding their lineages. Al was predeceased by his first wife Mary Therese (nee Corneau) on May 8, 1985, uncle Leonard Bondy, and his second son, Pastor Kenneth John Angus Palfenier on May 25, 2005. Kenneth left behind his wife Debra Palfenier (nee Thomas) and first wife Beth Palfenier (nee Baker). Al is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael Gerard and Michelle (nee Molner) Palfenier; grandchildren, Christopher Palfenier, Robert (Lindsey (nee Randall)) Palfenier, Marc, Martin and Mac and Mary Margaret Palfenier and husband Dale Braconnier; great-grandchildren, Tianni, Luke and Kaylee Palfenier; uncle Walter Bondarenko; Leonard Bondy's children. SCOTHORN, Arthur Dalton Born April 11, 1920, to parents Charles and Harriet (Toupe), of Sydney NS, Arthur passed away peacefully at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the age of 88. He served the Royal Canadian Navy during WW II aboard a Corvette, part of the fleet guarding the supply route from Newfoundland to New York City. After the war, Arthur earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Dalhousie University in Halifax and headed west to work. He retired from the Department of Public Works in Ottawa where he worked as an HVAC specialist. Arthur is survived by his wife of 55 years, H. Elizabeth (Beth McGuirk), daughter Pam, son Paul (Lillian Chow) and his grandchildren, Jonathan and Erin. He was predeceased by his brother Charles. A memorial service will be held at Woodroffe United Church, 207 Woodroffe Avenue, on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 - 1900 Merivale Rd, Nepean, ON, K2G 4N4 would be appreciated. COLTHORPE, Albert (Al) 1931-2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Al on January 13, 2009 at home in Rawdon, Quebec after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his son Abby (Darcy) and twin daughters Pam (Dick) and Joy. He leaves behind his sister Dorothy. He is also survived by his companion Wanda Purcell. BERNDT, Emma Emilie December 24, 1914 - January 13, 2009 God lovingly took our dear Mom, Oma, and Omama on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the age of 94 years. Emma lived a courageous life, going through difficult times during the war, starting over in Germany and then immigrating to Canada in 1953. Through it all, she remained positive, worked hard, and with a strong faith in Christ, her strength of character persevered, leaving family and friends with many fond and loving memories. Emma was happiest at home cooking, baking and gardening. Missing her sadly are her daughter Erika Janz; her son Erich (Carol) Berndt; her four grandchildren, Kari (Mark), Michelle (Dave), Anthony, and Jordan; and her four great-grandchildren, Luke, Nathan, Quinn, and Sophie. Emma was predeceased by her husband Adolf in 1993, two infant daughters, two brothers and two sisters. COOK, Lorne Ryan Lorne Ryan Cook, beloved husband, father and papa, passed away peacefully at Oilfields Hospital in Black Diamond, Alberta on January 13, 2009 at the age of 65 years. Lorne is survived by his loving wife and soulmate of forty-one years Gisela (Gay) Cook, their three sons and their families (Norman, Kim, Joshua and Elizabeth of Calgary; Troy, Deanna, Kailyn and Koen of Calgary; Kevin, Sonja, Rhiannon and Liam of Halifax), and Gisela's parents Rudolf and Magdalena Laubenstein of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Lorne was predeceased by his parents Willard and Pansy Cook of Taber, Alberta and his niece Karissa Siggelkow of Bow Island, Alberta. Lorne was born and grew up in Taber, Alberta. He later worked as an office manager for Emil Anderson construction for ten years, primarily in Agassiz, BC. After moving to Didsbury, Alberta in 1981, Lorne worked with Dome/Amoco/British Petroleum for eighteen years and had worked for EDS in Calgary for the past seven years. 1924 - 2009 Mrs. Ruth Cobb of Mount Saint Joseph Nursing Home passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Monday January 5, 2009 at the age of 84. Born in England, Ruth came to Canada as a war bride. She was a home maker and attended Newcastle United Baptist Church. She is survived by four daughters Barb Hamilton (Fred) of Miramichi, Ruth Flynn (Chet) of MacKenzie B.C., Phyllis Young (Temple) of Woodstock and Sandra Carroll (Brian) of Miramichi; two sons Billy (Janet) of Miramichi and Stephen (Shelley) of Miramichi; two brothers David and Michael both of England; 18 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband William she was predeceased by three brothers Denis, Philip and Brian; one sister Margaret and one grandson Troy. The family received relatives and friends at Northumberland Funeral Home on Thursday, January 8, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Born in Strathadam NB, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Alexia (Hare) Scott. She was a homemaker and a member of the United Church of Canada. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by two daughters, Wanda A. Jardine (David) of Upper Derby, Donna Buggie (James) of Red Deer Alberta; four sons, Kenneth McAllister (Linda) of Grand Lake NB, George Miller McAllister (Elizabeth) of Courtney BC, Wayne McAllister (Connie) of Red Deer Alberta, Junior (Daniel) McAllister of Sunny Corner; 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Besides her husband and her parents she was predeceased by one daughter-in-law Barbara; two sisters, Inez and Jean; two brothers, Kenneth and Freddie Scott. Carroll Ellis of Bannon, passed away suddenly on December 15th, 2008 at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville, NB. Carroll was born on February 25th, 1928 in Bannon. Carroll was the son of the late Preston and Pauline (Belyea) Ellis. He leaves to mourn his wife of 62 years, Winnifred (Parsons) Ellis. His daughter Sharon Brewster (Kevin Swim) of Bannon, 3 grandsons Robert (Jenifer) Brewster of Avondale, Shawn (Jennifer) Brewster of Bannon, Ryan (Maaike) Brewster of Somerville, along with 3 great grandchildren. Wendy Lee Sampson of Earlton died recently after battling cancer for two years. Mrs. Sampson was a wonderful wife and a loving mother. She was a very creative and talented woman in arts and crafts. She was also a member of Holy Trinity Church and the Catholic Women’s League. Mrs. Sampson is survived by her husband Jeff; daughter Mellisa (husband Michael Ward) and granddaughter Kairi; son Steven Sampson; mother Helene; sister Joanne (husband Tony Daishne) of Calgary; and brother Ron Byers of Charlton. She was predeceased by her father James Byers. The funeral is arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service to be conducted Thursday, January 8 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church by Father Wayne Mills at 11 a.m. Cremation will take place.
