Wonderful mother of Tabatha (Jason Buckingham), Jessica (Charlie Koester), Gary Jr. (Andrea). Cherished Nanny of Desiree and Bret. Loving daughter of Elizabeth Howe. Ina will be sadly missed by her sisters Nora and Lana, brothers Raymond and Paul, and extended family and friends. JOHNSON, Merlin Milton July 9, 1949 - December 31, 2008 Merlin Johnson, beloved husband of Doris, and beloved father of Brandi and Andrea, of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at the age of 59 years. Merlin was born and raised in Drumheller, AB. After completing high school, he enlisted in the Canadian Navy, which would take him to Halifax, and later, CBC Cold Lake. After rising to the rank of Corporal, he received his Honourable Discharge and moved his family to Calgary. In Calgary, Merlin had a successful and fulfilling career with Apple Fitness as a service technician, and was a member of Apple Fitness since its beginnings. He volunteered in Track and Field for over fifteen years, obtaining his credentials as an official, which allowed him to officiate at various meets across Canada; including international calibre meets held in Alberta. Merlin is survived by his wife, Doris; their children, Brandi and Andrea; sisters Sharon Lowry and Gail (Earl) Liddicoat; brothers, Randy (Tina), Gene (Sylvia) and Dwain (Karen). He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Clara Johnson and numerous extended family members and friends, including his in-laws, the Bourgeois. Merlin was predeceased by his parents, Alma and Milton. NIEMI 2009-01-04 Mrs. Annaliisa "Lisa" Niemi, a resident of Dawson Court, passed away peacefully at TBRHSC on Wednesday December 31, 2008. Born in Port Arthur, Ont., August 16, 1925, she was raised and educated in Gorham & Ware Twp. She moved to Vancouver, B.C. where she spent six happy years before returning to Port Arthur where she met and married George W. Niemi. They were blessed with two sons, Glenn and Mark and later with two dear grandsons, Kai and Cole. She was an active, founding member of Christ Lutheran Church and sang in the choir there for over 40 years. She also enjoyed volunteering at Bethammi Nursing Home. Her other interests included their camp at Hazelwood Lake, traveling, aquabics and skiing in her younger years. She was employed at Delmar’s Ladies Wear and later at Bourke’s Drugs for 16 years. Lisa is survived and lovingly remembered by sons; Glenn (Linda), Mark (Lesley Clark), grandsons; Kai and Cole, sisters; Leah Annala, Agnes Huotari (Walter), sisters-in-law; Lisa Maki, and Velva Humpheys and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Waino and Senja Maki, husband, George, sisters; Vi and Eila and brother Pentti. A service of remembrance will be held on Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 1:30 PM at Christ Lutheran Church, officiated by Reverend Dan Repo. Cremation has taken place and a Private Interment Service will be held at Riverside Cemetery on a later date. Heather Gail BENEDICT March 26, 1941 - December 27, 2008 BENEDICT Heather Gail Benedict, age 67, formerly of Upper Falmouth, Hants County, passed away on Saturday, December 27th, 2008, at the Windsor Elms Village, Windsor. Born on March 26th, 1941, in Three Mile Plains, Hants County, Nova Scotia, she was the only child of Ruth (Brown) Crowell, Windsor, and the late Percy Crowell. She was a member of St. George' Anglican Church, the Ladies Guild, the church choir, and was formerly a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed creating her crafts, travelling, drawing and oil painting, her flower garden and especially seeing the deer in her back yard. She also loved children and was well known as a road runner. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Freeman Clarence Benedict; her children, Robert "Bob", Upper Falmouth; David (Dawn), Pleasantville; Mark (Gail), Upper Falmouth; Catherine (Allan) Pemberton, Dill Road; Michael (Lisa), Windsor; grandchildren, Katelynn Dixon; Samantha, Joseph and Hannah Benedict; Mark Benedict and Emily Pemberton; Jason, Alannah, Erica, and Logan MacNeil; great grandchildren, Dauphne and Taylor Benedict. Besides her father she was predeceased by, her granddaughter, Katelynn MacNeil. Mrs. Margaret Lizzie MacKinnon June 22, 1915 - December 27, 2008 93, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully in Northwood Centre on December 27, 2008. Born in Kewstoke, Inverness Co., Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late George and Murdena (MacDonald) Ferguson. Margaret's home was always open to family and friends and she enjoyed making the "tea" and welcoming all who dropped in for visits. Margaret is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Wayne) Johnson, Mineville; Murna (Conrad) Baker, Lake Echo; and Janice (Brian) Drysdale, Dartmouth; brothers, D.J (Phyllis), Skye Glen; Peter (Florrie), Whycocomagh, Cape Breton; sister, Rebecca (John) Carew, Dartmouth; and grandchildren Lisa, Heath, Beth, Kyle, Blair, and Sarah; and one great- grandchild, Joseph Duncan; as well as many nieces and nephews. Margaret was a member of Stairs Memorial United Church, a life member of the U.C.W. of Stairs Memorial United Church and Leader of the Bertha Dillman Unit and in the past was an active member of the Cape Breton Club, Halifax. Prior to her recent hospitalization, Margaret lived at Acadia Place where she enjoyed the friendship of many. Mr. Glen Robert Hansen April 8, 1947 - December 25, 2008 61, Lower Sackville. The family of the late Glen Robert Hansen is saddened to announce his death on December 25, 2008, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Oxbow, Sask., Glen was a son of the late Christian and Kathrien (Peesker) Hansen. Glen will be forever loved and missed by his wife, Sheila (Gallant) and his daughter, Mona (Jason Lahey) of Fall River and son, Rob (Erica) of Hammonds Plains; his grandson, Brandon - the apple of his eye, and also his beautiful granddaughter, Morgan. Glen retired from the Canadian Forces (Navy) in 2001 and was proud to have served 35 years. Glen was a wonderful family man and very involved with his community and will be missed by both. He was a director of Riverview Community Centre for the past 25 years and was proud to have been chosen their Volunteer of the Year. He was also his children's biggest baseball fan and groupie and spent many hours sitting in ballparks cheering both of them on. Over the past number of years he had become a hockey grandpa and enjoyed going to see Brandon play goalie. For the past several years, Glen was an executive member of the Sackville Legion. He was proud to have been chosen as their volunteer of the year as well. Glen believed in his community and took his volunteerism seriously. When Glen's knees were younger, he enjoyed several years playing softball with the Sackville Blues. Glen was a member of Lakeshore Curling and for the past number of years, enjoyed curling at the new facility. Glen also enjoyed curling for Sackville Legion and looked forward to January for the annual curling bonspiel. They never won the bonspiels but sure enjoyed the travelling to the different legions and meeting so many wonderful curlers. Glen was also a member of Thursday night mixed darts of the Sackville Legion and was the proud shooter of the perfect 180 score. He also enjoyed his annual dart tournament with his friends. Once again, they never won but he sure enjoyed the friendships that he had forged over the years. Glen was also a Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan. He and his wife spent many enjoyable hours travelling to Montreal, Toronto and Boston to see his Blue Jays play. Besides his parents, Glen was predeceased by his sister, Shirley (Mike) Taylor. Glen also leaves to mourn his brother, Russel (Gail), Courtenay, B.C.; sister, Linda (Carman) Josey, Spry Bay; and special cousin, Ernie, Carnduff, Sask. Glen will also be missed by his sisters and brothers-in-law and the many friends he has made over his lifetime. IRVINE, Alva Irene (nee Anderberg) August 10, 1929 - January 2, 2009 Our dear mother Alva passed away peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. Alva was predeceased by her husband Jim in 1977, and her son Denis in 2008. She is survived by her brother Denis Anderberg; her daughters Thelma (Hans), Karen (Derek) and Ellen (Harvey), seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous close friends and relatives in her extended family. Born in Bassano and raised in Hussar, Alva moved to Calgary, married Jim and raised her family in Germany, Edmonton and Calgary, traveling with the Army. Alva was a lifelong member and past President of the Royal Canadian Legion's Ladies Auxiliary and the friendships she made there gave her life significant meaning. If friends so desire, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Thanks to Dr. Tam and Dr. Boyar and the staff at the Rockyview for making Alva's last days comfortable. Mrs. Sylvia Boyko December 27, 1932 - December 25, 2008 Sylvia Boyko December 27, 1932 – December 25, 2008 Sylvia of Saskatoon, SK, beloved wife to the late Walter Boyko, mother, baba, sister and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family at St. Paul’s Hospital Palliative Care Unit on Thursday, December 25, 2008 at the age of 75 years. Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Rosemary (Raymond) Malko of Aberdeen, SK; son Ken (Darlene) Boyko of Saskatoon, SK; grandchildren, Pamela Malko (Joel Jordison), Kimberly (Adrian) LaFauci, Kellianne Malko (Stephan Chelsom), Jonathan Boyko and Jennifer Boyko; sister, Natalie Korpan (David Houston); as well as all her close extended family; all of Walter’s family; and her many close friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Boyko (1990); and her parents, Harry and Ann (Shawaga) Korpan. Sylvia was born and raised in the Laniwci district, Saskatchewan. She met her future husband Walter at a dance in Laniwci and they were married in 1953. In 1955 they made Saskatoon their home and raised their two children. She lived a very active and full life. Mom was a lady of generosity, compassion, and love; she was a patient person, never judged others, and was always there to help. She helped Walter with their farming operation in Laniwci. She enjoyed gardening, loved entertaining the many family and friends at her home, loved to travel and spend time at the Casino with her friends. But, above all Mom was very dedicated to her family. She dearly loved her five grandchildren. She made her home available to them while they were furthering their education, enjoyed the many discussions they had whether it was education, politics or their day-to-day life experiences. She loved to send home care packages with her children and grandchildren. The many care packages of cabbage rolls, perogies, home baked goodies, homemade pickles are just to name a few. Her legacy will be forever remembered by her children and grandchildren and will be shared with generations to come. We love you Mom and Baba. The Prayers for Sylvia will be held on Tuesday, December 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Park Funeral Chapel, 311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK. The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. George, 214 Avenue M South, Saskatoon, SK with celebrant Rt. Rev. Vladimir Mudri. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Catholic Cemetery, Saskatoon, SK. Michael Joseph Brogan March 5, 1931 - December 27, 2008 BROGAN, Michael J. Passed away peacefully on December 27th, 2008. Beloved husband of Mary Kate (nee Kenny), and loving father to Michael, and Colleen McGuire and her husband Paul. Dear granddad of Michael J.J., Shauna, Patricia, Gillian, Katherine, and Maureen, and loving great granddad to Aeva. Survived by his sister Teresa Richard and predeceased by brother James, sisters Ann, Nuala, Kathleen, Margaret, Rose, and parents Agnes and Michael. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mike was a Department Manager at Chrysler Canada and retired after 38 years. He was a Director of the Windsor Chamber of Commerce, Director of Via Rail Canada, Chairman of the former City of Windsor Planning Board, and President and Treasurer of the Windsor-Walkerville Liberal Association. Mike was a former Trustee of the Windsor Catholic School Board, serving three terms as Chairman. He served as Transportation Chairman for the Canadian Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association. Mike was active in several other community organi-zations. MAH, Pauline (nee Mar Bow Lin) October 10, 1911 - December 30, 2008 Pauline Mah of Calgary passed away due to a stroke on December 30, 2008 at the age of 97 years. Oldest of thirteen children, Pauline was born to Lum Shee Mar and Kai Quong Mar in Victoria, B.C. on October 10, 1911. As a child she showed interest in business and spoke often of her grandfather taking her with him to meetings. Pauline was educated in Victoria, including studies of classical Chinese literature which she continued later in China but cut short when the Japanese invaded in the 1930's. She taught school in Victoria, later moved to Calgary on her own and accepted a teaching post at the Chinese church in Calgary's Chinatown. Over the next forty years she started and operated several businesses. Pauline married Bill Mah (Mah Fung Then) in 1946 and they had a son, Vincent. After Bill died in 1982, Pauline "retired", but remained active and independent until very recently. Pauline touched many lives with her natural optimism, generosity and outgoing nature. She is survived by her son, Vincent (Linda) Mah; siblings, Henrietta Chow, Frank Mar, Harry (Kathy) Mar, Dorothy Chow, Daphne (Richard) Lowe, Lillian Sim and Vivian Mar; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She will be especially missed by Linda's family; Rick Yerka, Sheryl (Charlie) Mikolcevic, Kathy Yerka, Melodie Campbell (Ryan McCarthy) and David Campbell. At Pauline's request, a private family Memorial will be held.
