MOON, Ellen - After a difficult year of illness and injury we sadly announce the passing of Ellen “Cush” Moon, on Thursday, January 1st, 2009 at the Brantford General Hospital, at the age of 79. Ellen Mary, beloved wife of the late Dennis F. Moon (1998). Loving mother of Trish (Paul) Birley of Paris Ont., and Shawn (Krista) Gannaw of Lefroy Ont. Cherished Nana Moon to Brendan and Sage (Sault Ste. Marie) and Maggie (Lefroy). Dear sister of Sarah (Mic) and her husband Hank Gannaw of Brantford Ont, and Michaeleen (Mike) and her husband Rod Berger of Paris Ont. Much loved by niece Cheryl (Dan) Murrell and their family Christopher, Justin and Jennifer of Brantford, Ont. Ellen was a dedicated nurse in Ontario and B.C. for over 30 years, who believed nursing was a vocation. NORTON, Mary Alice - Passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2009, in her 81st year, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Dear mother of Tom (Linda) & Greg (Nancy) all of Kitchener. Loving Grandmother of Karen, Laura, Courtney and Scott. Also survived by; her brother John Race and his wife Hazel of Simcoe, sister-in-law Judy Race of Burlington, cousins, nephews and nieces. Predeceased by her husband William Scott Norton (2003), parents Dr. Wilfrid Watson Race and his wife Alice M. Race (nee Brooks), and her brother Wilfrid B. Race. Born in Brantford on May 31, 1928, and resided in Cambridge (Galt) since 1956. She was a retired laboratory technician and was a member of Knox's Galt Presbyterian Church. In her community, she was an avid and active bridge player, member of the Silver Star Society, Cambridge Women's Probus Club and a board member of Meals on Wheels. Mary's friends will remember her for her courageous 40 year battle with Scleroderma. Family will receive friends at COUTTS FUNERAL HOME, 96 St. Andrews St, Cambridge, on Monday, January 5th, from 2-4 and 7-9pm. VERVAEKE, Gerald Joseph - Died peacefully in Brantford in his 85th year on January 2, 2009. Gerry is joyously reuniting with his beloved wife of 59 years Wilma (Dixon) but sadly leaving behind seven children; Wayne (Barb), Glenn (Libby), Marilyn (Bob) Makinson, Randy (Helly), Janice, Larry (Susan), Victoria (Brian) Poncelet, 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Dear brother of Hector, Stella, Rita, Albert, Victor, George, Hilda and Roy. General Gerry and Wilma worked side by side operating Gerry's General Store in Restoule, Ontario for 16 years. Upon retiring to Brantford, Gerry enjoyed fishing, golf, fishing, travelling, fishing, playing cards, woodworking, spending time with family as well as fishing. Gerry will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. PARNELL, Colleen Claudette (Miller) - The Parnell family announces with sadness the passing of Colleen Parnell on December 31, 2008 at the North Bay General Hospital. Colleen was the beloved wife of Jack Parnell who passed before her on the same day 4 years ago. She is now “dancing with Jack in Heaven” and reunited with her parents, Alex and Gertie Miller and her youngest sister Sharon Hall. Colleen raised six children: Linda (Dave Derma), Caroline (Tennant), John, Jeff (Giovanna), Laura (Eric Modeen) and Stanley (Victoria). She also leaves behind nine grandchildren including Alex (Jenn), Kara, Caprina, Kyli, Keegan, Gina, Jack, Jake, Anders and her soon to be born first great grandchild. Colleen was fiery and funny, always teasing and willing to “poke the bear”. She was a spiritual person who loved gardening, curling, Ivan's hamburgers and Jack's piano playing. CESAR, Martin - Passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side, on Friday January 2nd, 2009 at the St. Catharines General Hospital at the age of 86. Beloved husband of Margaret for 49 years. Cherished father of Emil (Darlene), Frank, Paula (David) Rittenberg. Special Ati of Eric, Amanda, Angela, Derek, Benjamin, Aidan and Jordan. Brother of Janez and Joze of Slovenia. Predeceased by his sisters Francka and Johanna and his brothers Ludvik and Frank. Martin immigrated to Canada in 1951. He worked in the lumber mills in Northern Ontario and then moved to St. Catharines. Martin worked at General Motors for 34 years. He retired in 1988 but continued to be very active around his home and garden. A special thank you to Dr. H. Kim, Dr. Rabin and Dr. Luce for their care and attention. Martin is resting at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton Street. GOUPIL, Frère Henri, F.I.C. (Hermias, 1916 - 2008) Le 31 décembre 2008, est décédé, à l'infirmerie de La Prairie, Frère Henri Goupil, f.i.c., à l'âge de 92 ans, dont 76 années de vie religieuse. Henri Goupil, fils d'Adrien Goupil et de Marie-Anne Duquette, est né à Saint-Léon-de-Compton, le 30 juillet 1916. Il entra au noviciat de La Prairie en 1932 et fit profession perpétuelle en 1938. Il enseigna à Montréal : Saint-Stanislas, Saint-Zotique, Saint-Pierre-Claver et collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. Il passa plus de 30 années de sa carrière d'enseigant au pensionnat de Philipsburg ; il avait développé une méthode personnelle de l'enseignement du français qui donnait d'excellents résultats; il fut aussi directeur pédagogique et conseiller auprès des autres enseignants. Outre sa famille religieuse, il laisse dans le deuil sa soeur Léoze Goupil (feu Ernest Roy) ainsi que ses neveux et nièces. BYRNE, Ronald Calvin Passed away after a lengthy illness on Thursday January 1, 2009 in his 75th year. He was surrounded by his loved ones when he was reunited with his darling wife, Joyce Byrne, who passed away in 1981. Devoted step-father to Scott Cameron (Joyce) and Glenn Cameron (Bonnie). HALSTEAD, Ronald Lawrence (1923-2008) Ron passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital on December 31, surrounded by family. Born and raised in Alberta, third of eight children of William and Ada (Mould), Ron will be dearly missed by his wife, Viola (McAllister) and daughters Cathy (Gunter) Neugebauer, Beth (David) Weckman and Shauna (Paul) Salomone. Grandfather of Eric Neugebauer, Nicole and Andrea Weckman and Brenda Salomone. Predeceased by siblings Doris, Francess, Edward and first wife Irene (Claeys). Ron was a co-pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Burma during the Second World War. After completing his Ph.D in Soil Science at U Wisconsin, he spent 35 years at the Experimental Farm in Ottawa as research scientist then Director General, retiring as Acting Assistant Deputy Minister of Agriculture Research in 1987.
