Frances was born on March 23, 1924, in Summerside, P.E.I., to her late parents, Harry and Iva (nee Currie) Heckbert. Beloved wife of the late James Beaton and loving mother of Harry of Bedeque, Brian (Brenda) of Bedeque, Wayne (Margo) of Alberta and Earl of Summerside. Also lovingly remembered by her nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Survived by her sister Jean Hughes of Charlottetown, P.E.I. Besides her husband and her parents, Frances was predeceased by her brothers Earl, Harry and Lloyd Heckbert and her sister Irene Bryanton, her brothers-in-law Willard Bryanton and Henry Hughes and her sisters-in-law Bea, Peggy, Ruth and Alice Heckbert. CAMERON, Duncan 2008-12-29 August 7, 1914-December 26, 2008 Mr. Duncan Leonard Cameron, (Len) Cameron passed away on December 26th , 2008, in his 95th year of youth, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with his family at his side. He was born in Fort William on August 7th, 1914 to John Cook (Jack) Cameron and Ellen Mae Back. He was the oldest of 10 children. Len was educated at St. Stanislaus School, Fort William Collegiate Institute and was also in the first class at St. Patrick‘s High School. He was one of the founders of the school‘s football team a few years later. Len spent the summers of his childhood camping at Amethyst and Silver Lake where he developed his love for the outdoors and spent time with his father, brothers and Uncle Duncan perfecting their skills at the sport of fly fishing for trout – an old country (Scotland) family tradition. In 1941, he married Louise Helen Spooner and settled in Fort William where they raised their family of 3 sons, Leonard Jr., Duncan and Robert. He shared his love of the outdoors with Louise and passed on his passion for fly fishing to his boys. The family spent many an hour trout fishing at Buckaday Lake. In later years, fishing and gardening with Louise was the focus of his summer recreation. Len‘s first place of employment was Matthew‘s brokerage office. He also worked on the Gunflint Trail at Mackie Siding, as a Sampler on the grain boats, and at the Great Lakes Paper Company. The bulk of his career was spent working with his father and Uncle Duncan at Delamater Rankin Wholesale Distributor, as a salesman, until he retired in 1979. He knew most corner store proprietors in Port Arthur and all who were acquainted with Len knew of the many adventures and exploits he and his customers “experienced” over his 40+ years in the business. He ended his working days as an employee of the Hudson‘s Bay Company. At the time, he was the oldest person (64.5 years) the company had ever hired. Acknowledging this fact was the only slight concession he ever made to admitting he was aging. His interests were many and varied. However, family was #1. He came from a large family and married into an even larger one. All the time was family time and he strove to keep family ties and activities at the forefront in both the Cameron and Spooner families. Fishing was always a leisure activity to be pursued. Len and Louise also shared a passion for gardening at their “farm” in South Stanley where they spent much of their time together. Here is where he refined his Rube Goldberg skills to a science. He also loved to spend Saturday evenings watching his beloved Montreal Canadiens on Hockey Night in Canada. His accomplishments were many. In the early to mid 60‘s, he was Secretary of the Fort William Progressive Conservative Association and he would conscript his sons to assist him in everything from playing “O‘ Canada” at association events to perfecting the fine art of licking stamps and envelopes for the association‘s regular mailings. Len dedicated close to 60 years to the development of curling at both the local and national levels. He first became involved with curling as a participant in Fort William in 1942. It was not long before he was contributing his talents at the board table becoming Treasurer of the Fort William Curling Club in 1944. From that point on he would serve on the Board of the organization for 30 years. Appointed President of the Club in 1953, he held this position until 1957, the longest term of any President in the club‘s 100 year history. Elected to the Executive of the Northwestern Ontario Curling Association in 1957, he served as this regional group‘s President from 1961 to 1963. At the national level, he served as the NWOCA representative to the Dominion Curling Association from 1961 to 1965. He was Chairman of the Lakehead/Thunder Bay International Bonspiel in 1953, ‘55 and‘57 and Secretary Treasurer from 1958 to 1961 and again from 1974 to 1980. Len served as Co-Chair of the MacDonald Brier held in Fort William in 1960 and as Chairman of the 1966 National Mixed Curling Championship. In 1973, he was awarded a life membership in the Fort William Curling Club. He was later granted a life membership in the Northwestern Ontario Curling Association. He was also a member of the Hawk‘s Nest, a group of like-minded individuals, dedicated to developing and refining the social traditions of the men‘s national curling championships. He was member of Morning Class, a Brier tradition, started by Colie Campbell, one of the original members of the Hawk‘s Nest, and carried on to this day by Len and his many Thunder Bay curling associates. Len attended 47 of the past 48 Briers and has developed friendships throughout the Canadian and international curling communities. In 2001, he was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in the builder category in recognition of his many years of hard work and contributions to the curling community in Thunder Bay and region. Len was predeceased by his spouse, Louise, in July 2001, brothers Gordon and Robert (Phil) and sister Elspeth (Elsie). He is survived by his sons Leonard Jr., Duncan, and Robert (Katie Heikkinen); grandchildren Cara Cameron, Lisa Cameron and Andrew Cameron; siblings Jack (Ange) Cameron, Ernie (Mary) Cameron, Helen Foulds, Mary Brownlee, Peter (Sandy) (Rosalea) Cameron and Emily Halvorsen; and sisters-in-law Rita Byron and Pauline Gareau. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in the Cameron and Spooner families. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday December 31, 2008 when friends and family will gather at St. Patrick‘s Cathedral at 1:30 p.m. for Funeral Mass celebrated by Rev. Msgr. P.M. Stilla V.G. Services will be complete in the church with interment to take place at a later date in Mountain View Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel with Vigil Prayers to start at 7:00 p.m. The visitation and prayers will take place in conjunction with the visitation and prayers for Len‘s longtime friend, Ab Carroll. McNAUEAL, Molina “ Min“ (née Groulx) - Born in 1918 in Parry Sound, Ontario. Predeceased by her parents Marie Gauthier Groulx and J.B. Groulx; brothers Edmond, Joseph and Ted; sisters Viola, Irene, Jay and her husband Elmer and her son Ken. Survived by her brother John (Jack) Groulx and sisters Beatrice “Bea“ Goldman and Loretta Kraft. She will be fondly remembered by countless nieces and nephews. Greatly missed by her sons Rodney (Lorraine) and Brett (Rosanna) as well as her daughter-in- law Dawn Rumble and their children Robin, Brandon, Jill, Preston, Blaine, Erin, Tara, Trish, Brett Jr., Kyle, Kori, Jamie, Shawn and Shannon; 15 great grandchildren. Min helped her mother and father and her siblings in the Dairy Business years ago. Her father J.B. Groulx owned and operated Producer's Dairy in Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake and on their family home in Dane, it was the largest dairy in the area at the time. Min was loved by all who knew her and called Grandma by hundreds. She loved children, nature and did her best to protect all of God's creation. She was adamant in her beliefs about protecting the environment, and was a vocal advocate on many environmental issues in the area. Min recently celebrated her 90th birthday. This gave her an opportunity to mingle with many friends and loved ones. She related to her family how special this had been to her. It meant so much to her that others would make such a sacrifice. Min was a humble person that shared her love with everyone. She was a strongly devoted member of the Roman Catholic Church and the Holy Name of Jesus Parish. Her love for Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Saints, Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul and Father Desmond O'Connor immeasurable. It gives her family peace in knowing she is with them all. Min was an avid supporter of many charities, local and elsewhere. She was a gentle Spirit, slow to anger and very forgiving. We cannot possibly say how much she will be missed by all who knew her. A tremendous loss not only for her family but for all of Kirkland Lake. A town she loved so much and truly believed in. LIBBY, Charles Ernest 1918-2008 - Passed away on Thursday, December 25th, 2008 at the Timmins and District Hospital, Loving father of Bruce (Nancy) of London and Ross Libby. He leaves behind 3 grand children (Sandy, Mark and Adam) and one great grandchild (Alex). Survived by his beloved sister and best friend Irene (Phil) Deacon. He was predeceased by his loving wife Patricia (nee Miller) in 2001 and his brother Reginald in 2005 (Doris). Also predeceased by his parents Harry (1971) and Beatrice (Allen) (1991).He leaves behind his cousins Marlene Fara, Allan Webb, June Savard, Sandra Vehkala and Art Stanlake, as well as, many other cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. Basil was well loved in the porcupine camp. He had lived in South Porcupine since 1923, served in the Canadian Navy from 1941-45 and had been an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, looking after the legion memoriam since 1985 and presiding over remembrance days ceremonies for many many years. Dad loved sports. He curled, golfed, swam and danced and was active well into his 90th year. In 1971, he was part of a curling team that won the Northern Ontario Senior Championship. More importantly he loved people and was always ready to help, no matter what the problem. He was deeply loved by his two sons and sister and will be sadly missed by all. Donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society will be gratefully acknowledged by the family. A memorial service to honour the life of Basil will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday December 29th, 2008 at STINSON FUNERAL HOME.
