ANDREWS, Ray November 29, 1920 - December 23, 2008 Ray Andrews passed away suddenly surrounded by family on December 23, 2008 at the age of 88 years. Beloved husband of thirty-three years to Betty and loving father to Catherine Schachtel, Hal (Patrice) Andrews, and stepchildren Tom (Theresa), Don, and Joe Beaupre, Lynn (Bill) Koyzan, and Lisa (Jim) Geiger. Sadly missed by nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and sister Phyllis Sutherland. Ray was born in Winnipeg, MB. He served in the Navy and was active in the Royal Canadian Legion No. 284 and the ANAF. Ray enjoyed a varied professional life which included the oil industry, real estate and banking. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed curling. GARRIES, Irl Russell (White) August 8, 1922 - December 22, 2008 Irl Russell (White) Garries, beloved husband of Dorothy Garries of Calgary, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2008 at the age of 86 years. White was born August 8, 1922 in Stella, Nebraska. He immigrated to Bentley, Alberta in July 1930 with his family. White served his country in the RCAF as a bomb aimer overseas during WWII. Upon his return, White married Dorothy on June 11, 1949 in Calgary. White worked for thirty-one years with Alberta Livestock CO-OP as an accountant. White was very family oriented, and enjoyed to be in the company of his children. He especially loved to make an annual trip home to Bentley for the Annual Rodeo Days Parade. White is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Debra Garries. He was predeceased by his parents, Katie and Ralph Garries; brother, Red; sister, Hazel; son, Brian; and daughter, Debbie. PORTER, Kenneth Patterson February 27, 1921 - December 23, 2008 Our much loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on December 23, 2008 at the age of 87 years. In recent years Ken lived at the Edgemont Retirement residence where he made some very good friends and will be missed. Ken was an Air Force WWII veteran. He drove a streetcar for Calgary Transit before becoming a Health Inspector with the City of Calgary until his retirement. Ken will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his daughters Sandy (Dennis) Young and Laurie (Ken) Miyasaki, grandson Casey Young, (Marie Audenaert) and great-grandson Brayden Young, granddaughters Jessica Miyasaki (husband Bob Smyth), Holly Miyasaki, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Del, his parents James and Maggie Ann, his sister Rae and his brother Ed. He is survived by his sister Aileen O'Neill. We would like to thank all the nurses, care aides and support staff at the Edgemont and Peter Lougheed Medical Centre for all that they did for our dad and for the care and concern shown toward his family. At Ken's request, there will be no Funeral. He wished to be cremated and his ashes placed alongside his beloved wife. A Celebration of his Life will be held in the spring of 2009. BURTON, Rose - Beloved wife of George, passed away peacefully on December 16th, in her 91st year. A loving mother to daughter Kathy and son Bill (deceased), devoted grandmother to Ron Bradley and Jason Burton, and great grandmother to Thomas and Bauer. Rose and George lived for many years in Innisfil Township and enjoyed many happy years in Sandy Cove Acres until their move in 1996 to Sechelt, B.C. where they recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Suffering many strokes over the last ten years, Rose lovingly cared for by her husband, family and care givers. Rose loved strongly and deeply for family and friends, and was admired by all she met. DENIS MARTEL, époux de feu dame Isabelle Poudrier et conjoint de dame Jeannine Duval, domicilié à Thetford Mines. Il était le père de Claude Martel conjoint de Manon Côté et de Josée Martel conjointe de André Poulin.Il était le grand-papa d’Alexandre, Francis, Maxime et de Emilie, le frère de Gaetan conjoint de Françoise Labranche, Pierrette conjointe de Yvan Mercier, Réal conjoint de Cécile Vaillancourt, Gilles époux en premières noces de feu Madeleine Vaillancourt et conjoint de Murielle Théroux, Ginette conjointe de Marcel Roy, Diane conjointe de Michel Turcotte et de Réjean conjoint de Jacinthe Fortier. Il laisse également les enfants de sa conjointe: Daniel Duval conjoint de Guylaine Perreault, Stéphane Duval conjoint de Lucie Moreau et Marc Duval conjointe de Sophie Lamontagne et également ses beaux-frères et belles-soeurs de la famille Poudrier et de nombreux autres parents et amis. Bob lived in Port Colborne most of his life, and worked at Union Carbide for 39 years, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed playing and coaching baseball, golf, fishing and hunting. Mr. Arthur Ernest Thornton December 18, 1913 - December 19, 2008 Arthur Ernest Thornton age 95 of Amherst passed away on Friday, December 19, 2008 at the Victoria Manor in Amherst. Born in Amherst, December 18, 1913, he was the youngest son of the late John and Amelia (Adams) Thornton. Arthur worked as a self-employed Mason in the Amherst area for over fifty years. He liked spending time at his cottage at Jackson Point, with his friends and family. During his life he enjoyed, dancing, card playing, motorcycling, boating, snowmobiling and four wheeling. Arthur and Emily were members of the “Fly Away Campers” and traveled around the area. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was predeceased by his first wife, the former Emily Mitchell; son, William; daughter in law Wanda, as well as his sister, Connie Ison; and brothers, Charles and Arnold. (Duthie) Cummings of Saint John West, went home to be with his Lord and Savior unexpectedly at Highlow Farm in Hampton on December 19, 2008 at the age of 84. Born in Lower Southhampton on June 28, 1924, he was the son of Smith and Verna (Patterson) Cummings. Dr. Cummings, a graduate of UNB Fredericton and the University of Toronto, practiced dentistry for forty-one years in Saint John West. He was an active member of Lancaster Baptist Church and the Gideons. He lived a very active life enjoying his farm, hunting and fishing. He said he had enough projects to keep him busy until he was 120. He took great pride and joy in his seven children and grandchildren. Surviving in addition to his wife, Ruth, of fifty-eight years, are two sons - Dwight (Susan) Cummings of Bloomfield; Dr. Brent (Jennifer) Cummings, of Hampton; five daughters - Jane (Dr. Joseph) Addison of Chicago; Diane (Rev. Dr. David ) Kofahl of Clarence, N.Y.; Karen (Rev. Dr. Leo) Gallant of Sussex; Cheryl Langford of Grand Bay; Krista (Talbot) Crowe of Fredericton; three brothers - Glen (Vivian) Cummings, Colby (Audrey) Cummings, all of Woodstock and Malcolm (Lou) Cummings of Fredericton; one sister Vera (John) Cowie of Woodstock; 21 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Marie Nelson, and brothers Hayward, Edison, and Clifton Cummings, and son-in-law Keith Langford. Resting at Castle "Fallsview" Funeral Home (634-1701), 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John West. Visiting at Fallsview on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will take place at Lancaster Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 23 at 2 p.m. Following the service a time of fellowship will take place in the Church Hall. Hazel Louise Waycott February 27, 1921 - December 20, 2008 Waycott, Hazel L. Hazel Louise (Shaw) Waycott passed away at Kennebec Manor on December 20, 2008 with her family at her side. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family of six brothers and two sisters. She was born on February 27, 1921 in Maces Bay to Cyrus and Mary (Mawhinney) Shaw. She is survived by two sons; Richard (Elva) Waycott of Maces Bay and Maurice (Ann) Waycott of Waweig, and one daughter Helen (Lester) Hyslop of Maces Bay, nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons. She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Maces Bay, a life member of Trinity A.C.W., and the Lancaster Deanery A.C.W., a choir member for many years, and a member of the Fundy Bay Senior’s, Maces Bay and a former member of the Orange Lodge. She was predeceased by her husband Sydney and granddaughter Lorene March. Resting at Castle "Fallsview" Funeral Home (634-1701), 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John West. COYLE, Randall (Randy) Robertson December 23, 1949 - December 17, 2008 It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce Randy Coyle died tragically on December 17, 2008, on a remote beach in Panama, Central America. Randy was born in Unity, Saskatchewan and most recently resided in Calgary. He grew up with his family on various horticultural experimental farms throughout the prairies. He always had a love for the sea and joined the Canadian Navy as an Electrical Tradesman and Leading Seaman, stationed in Halifax, NS and Victoria, BC. After leaving the Navy, he became a firefighter and paramedic and worked for the fire departments in both Lethbridge, AB and Nelson, BC. Randy changed careers in 1979, attended school in Houston, Texas and became a drilling fluid engineer. He worked domestically in Canada for a few years but the majority of his working life was spent overseas, working on offshore drilling platforms in several countries in both the Middle East and Africa on a monthly rotation basis out of Canada. In the 1980's, Randy, Linda and Jason lived together in Kuwait. He was a hard worker, enjoyed the challenges of his work overseas and was well respected for his knowledge and expertise in his field. He was particularly proud that he had worked on all of the various types of offshore platforms from jack-ups, semi-submersibles, and finally a deep-sea drilling ship. Through the years, he had realized many accomplishments and firsts with companies such as Kuwait Oil Co., ExxonMobil and Chevron. Randy loved adventure and always lived his life and each day to the fullest. He was witty, had an excellent sense of humor and was a big tease. He was a very generous man and provider and shared all of his abundance with both his family and friends. His passions were gardening, cooking and boating. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for forty-one years. Randy was a loving husband and best friend of his wife Linda of thirty-eight years; a proud and loving father of his son Jason Coyle (Kristin Thomas); and he will be sadly missed by his son Eric Nelson; his mother Thea Chapman; his sister Jacquie Chapman (Stan), Steven, Jennifer (Don Jones), Tyler and Gabe; his sister Cheri Gibbons (David), Erin and Nicole; his brother Dorsey DeWitt (Roberta), Stacey; Murray Skelding (Doreen) and family; George Skelding (Debbie) and family; Edgar Skelding (Lissa) and family and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Randy was predeceased and will be welcomed home by his father, Jack Coyle, his grandparents John and Alice Coyle; an infant son, Randy Coyle, Jr. and stepfather, Frank Chapman. EVERITT, Ernest (Ernie) Edward Daniel - In loving memory of Ernest Everitt, who passed away at the Saint Joseph's Villa in Sudbury on Thursday, December 25th, 2008, Ernest (Ernie) Everitt formerly of Coniston in his 79th year. Beloved husband of Joan (Lawrence). Loving father of Richard (Maria Rispoli) of Pinawa and daughter Norma (Hubert Lavailee) of Calgary. Devoted grandfather to Louisa- Joan Everitt of Ottawa; and to Melissa Georgopoulos and Sara Lavallee of Calgary. He is predeceased by his parent's John and Florence Everitt (Greenacre) of Coniston; and his brother John and wife Marie. He is survived by his brother George Everitt (Jean) and his sister Florence (Eric) Williams, both of Nanaimo British Columbia, and by his many nieces and nephews. Ernie was born in Beauchesne Quebec in 1929, grew up in Mactier, Ontario and Coniston, Ontario. During World War II, he was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He married his wife Joan in Sudbury in 1950. Together they lived on Wembley Drive and Lockerby in Sudbury before settling in Coniston for 48 years. He worked briefly for the CPR and then in 1947 went to work at International Nickel Company (INCO) until his retirement in 1993. He was a mechanic and engineer for the electrical locomotives used at the Coniston and Copper Cliff smelters. He transferred this aptitude to the maintenance of his home and vehicles. Ernie was a long time board member and officer of the Coniston Credit Union, later to become the Northern Credit Union. He proudly served there for over 25 years. Dad always enjoyed the company of his friends and new acquaintances. He was a member of the Coniston Curling Club. During his retirement, Dad and Mom traveled to the prairies visiting family. He maintained a life-long interest in aviation and railroads. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of Saint Joseph's Villa for their kind and compassionate care of Dad. SAWATZKY, Donald E. 2008-12-26 Donald E. Sawatzky born November 19, 1924 in Morse, Saskatchewan passed away December 23, 2008 at the St. Joseph‘s Hospice, Thunder Bay, ON. Don grew up in Morse, Saskatchewan where he received his schooling and in 1944 he joined the Navy and served his time on the HMS Puncher. He served as a torpedo technician and had many fond memories of his tour of duty travelling through the Panama Canal, to North Africa, north to the Hebridies and to Norway. After the war he attended business school in Winnipeg and worked for a short time for the family business in Morse, Saskatchewan before coming to Marathon in 1949. There he met his wife Mary and they wed in 1950. Together they had four children. He worked in the accounting department for America Can and James River Corporation until his retirement. In his younger days he enjoyed playing hockey with the Marathon Mercuries and later with the Old Timer‘s League. The family has many fond memories of the camping and road trips to visit relatives. Over the years he had been active as a union representative for OPSEU, a founding member of the Marathon Credit Union, and served as a member of the Legion, and the fire department and ambulance services. After retirement he work for Pinkerton Securities for a number of years. After the passing of his wife in 2001 he moved to Glacier Ridge in Thunder Bay where met his present wife Trudy. A few years later they moved to a condo at Glengowan Place where they made many new friends. He and his wife enjoyed there travels to Mexico, Panama Canal, the Mediterranean and numerous trips to visit family. Donald is lovingly remembered by his wife Trudy (McMullen), Catherine Kozyra (Zen), Jane Kmill (Larry) Thunder Bay, Paul (Carol) Middlefield, CT, and David Sawatzky (Wendy) and grandchildren Michael and Danielle of Airdrie, AB., Trudy‘s daughters Carol Miller (Lloyd) Perth, Bette Rowe (Tim) Burnstown ON, and Lynda Milne (George) Thunder Bay, ON, and six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Don was predeceased by his father Peter J. Sawatzky, mother Sarah Sawatzky, brother John Sawyer, brother Martin Sawyer, brother Bob Sawatzky and wife Mary Sawatzky. Mrs Rachel Rosemary Crook October 29, 1930 - December 20, 2008 The illness that took Rachel’s life could never take her spirit as she fought courageously until the very end. With family at her side, she took the hand of the Lord and left us to be with her beloved husband Raymond, on December 20th, 2008. Rachel was predeceased by her loving husband Dr. Raymond Crook in 2004. She is survived by her four children, Yvonne (Orest) Federko of Cranbrook, BC and their children Ashley & Lindsay, Nigel (Sharon) Crook and their children Jenna & Elyse, Lynn Crook (Neil Devitt) and their daughter Julia and Sheila (Ken) Burdon of Lone Tree, Colorado and their children Michael, Victoria & Andrea. Rachel was born in Reading, England in 1930 to Charles and Doris Simmonds. She received her training as a registered nurse at Brighton Hospital in England, where she met a young doctor, Raymond and they were married in June 1954. In 1957, with two young children, they moved to Saskatchewan, Canada. Rachel was active in the community and a member of Wesley United Church. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, gardening and traveling to tropical destinations for scuba diving with Ray. The family spent summers and many weekends at their cottage at Sunset Cove on Last Mountain Lake. Her grandchildren were a great source of joy and entertainment. Rachel’s family, who were the very reason for her being, will take with them the wonderful memories of the fun-loving, caring and thoughtful mother and grandmother who brought so much happiness to so many. She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends. Mrs. Charlene Leigh Price July 24, 1966 - December 20, 2008 Charlene Leigh Price July 24, 1966 – December 20, 2008 It is with great sadness that the family announces the unexpected passing of a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Charlene was born in Winnipeg, MB in 1966. Soon thereafter, she moved with her family to England, returning back to Canada in 1989. Charlene is survived by her husband of 18 years, Tony; and daughter, Abbie age 8 years; parents, Gary and Shirley Keward; mother-in-law, Iris Price of Nottingham, UK; brother, Dwayne (Roslyn) Keward and their children, Analiese, Lauren, Sophie and Allicia of Nottingham, UK; brother, Chris (Karen) Keward and their children, Katie, Daniel, Luke and Jordan of Nottingham, UK; sister, Denise (Peter) Sharp and their children, Josh and Jesse; sister-in-law, Alison (Tim) Creedon and their daughter, Alex of Lunnenberg, NS; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Charlene was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Edna and Samuel Keward; maternal grandparents, Tony and Kay Skakun; and her father-in-law, James Price. Charlene, after the birth of Abbie, in order to be with her daughter decided to work from home and built a successful business. Together, Charlene and Tony developed their screen-printing and embroidery business to form Gecko Designs, which they have been operating for the past eight and years. Charlene loved to travel and has been to many places throughout the world. On several occasions, as a family, they enjoyed holidaying in the Dominican Republic where they were able to spend quality time together forming lasting memories. Charlene will be most remembered for being a devoted mother and wife. She had an excellent work ethic, but always made the time to be involved in Abbie’s schooling, volunteering much of her time wherever she could. She enjoyed being physically active, was incredibly organized and took pride in keeping an impeccable home. Charlene had a generous heart; giving of herself in a multitude of ways. Mass of Christian Burial and The Celebration of Charlene’s Life will be held at St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church, 1202 Avenue O South, Saskatoon, SK on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with celebrant Very Rev. Fr. Ron Beechinor. Following the luncheon a private family inurnment of ashes will take place in St. John’s Anglican Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan. Condolences to the family may be sent through park’s website www.parkfuneral.ca.
