MORIN, Rebel (Smith) - Passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at the Welland General Hospital on October 8th, 2008 at the age of 61. Rebel (Smith) Morin, beloved wife of Alex Morin, cherished mother of Matthew (Melanie) Morin and Jessica (George) Buckton. Rebel will be sadly missed by her sister Dinah (John) Martin, and her brother Peter (Joy) Smith. She will be fondly remembered by her brothers and sisters-in-law; Doris Poulin (late Robert) Pat Morin (late Eddy), Elna (Ray) Cté, Jules (Marion) Morin, Julien (Elise) Morin, Cécile Létourneau (late Gaston), Diane (Claude) St. Laurent and Elizabeth (Ken) Beatty. Predeceased by her sister-in-law Lydia (Larry) Fontaine. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Rebel graduated from McMaster University in 1967. She started her teaching career in Port Colborne and later taught at St. Catharines Business College. She then took time off to raise her children, and returned to work as a court clerk in the cities of Welland and St. Catharines. After her retirement, she enjoyed many hobbies; quilting, knitting, cross stitching and even tried her hand at painting. Her most favourite pastime was travelling, especially her winters in Florida, where she made many friends because of her outgoing personality. Rebel will always be remembered for her humour, funny antics and her witty personality. She will be missed by all. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Welland Funeral Home 827 East Main Street, Welland, on Friday October 10th, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at St. Andrew the Apostle Church at 10:30 a.m. In keeping with Rebel's wishes, cremation will follow. POCHOPSKY, Irene Viola (née Bigelow) - It is with great sadness that we announce that this well known pioneer of Kirkland Lake passed away at the Kirkland & District Hospital on October 9, 2008. Irene was born in Buckingham, Québec in 1920. Her parent moved to Kirkland Lake in 1924. Irene was raised and educated in Kirkland Lake. She married her childhood sweetheart Michael, affectionately known as “Porky”, who passed away in 1985. Irene was a tireless volunteer with Kiwanis and a true supporter of the community. She was proud of the fact that she and her friend Betty Ann LaBerge were known as FRIENDS OF THE ROCK and together they raised and donated three quarters of a million dollars to various charities in Kirkland Lake. Irene was named citizen of the year in 1996. Irene was predeceased by her husband Michael; parents Garnet and Victoria; brother Lionel, sister Doris and granddaughter Mandy. Irene leaves behind her son Kenneth, daughter Barbara, grandchildren Lori, Jeffery, David, Kerry, Andrew, Kristen, and great grandchildren Jade and Sara. Irene will be missed by all those who loved her. June Hartley Posted 5 days ago June Hartley, the former June Downard, beloved wife of Russell Hartley of Clifford, passed away at Louise Marshall Hospital in Mount Forest on Sunday, October 4, 2008, aged 71 years. Dear mother of Lynn and Casmire Stodolak of Arthur, Lois Huffman of Hamilton and Lori Hartley of Guelph. Also survived by four grandchildren Nathan, Clayton, Nicole and Brooke, five brothers Jim, Bob, Leonard, Ken and George Downard and two sisters, Marjorie Timmins and Suzanne Knox. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service of remembrance will be held at the Garrett Funeral Chapel in Clifford on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 11 am with visiting one hour prior. McCONNELL, James Kenneth “Mac” - A resident of Chatham, and formerly of the Tilbury area, James Kenneth “Mac” McConnell died suddenly at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on Thursday October 9, 2008 at the age of 75. Born in Kingston, son of the late Oscar & Eileen McConnell. Best friend and companion to Louise Brodie of Chatham. Dear father of Mark McConnell & his friend Tabitha Arnold of Merlin, Laurie McConnell Borschke & her husband Ralph of Leamington, and fondly remembered by their mother Janet McConnell of Tilbury. Predeceased by one brother and one sister. Mac devoted 10 years of peacetime service to the Canadian Navy, and retired from Union Gas after 28 years in the meter shop. He was heavily involved in minor hockey as a player, coach, and in later years as a referee, and was a dedicated umpire for Chatham SloPitch for many years. KENNY, Amelia Catherine ( MacLellan) - Peacefully at Temiskaming Hospital on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at the age of 89 years following a courageous battle with cancer. Born at Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Mrs. Kenny was a long time resident of Temagami and a faithful member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. FRANKLIN, Florence - Florence died peacefully with family at her side on Friday October 3, 2008 at the St. Catharines General Hospital following a short illness. She was eighty-five years old and was predeceased by her husband of forty-seven years, Morgan. Much loved, she is survived by her daughter Dorothy, brother Donald McWhirter (Mississauga), sisters Dorothy McWhirter (Dundas), and Ruth (Bud) Knight (Kelowna, B.C.) and her sister-in-law Catherine Franklin (Mississauga). She is also survived by nieces and nephews. Florence trained as a nurse at the Brantford General Hospital and after nursing in her early life worked in the office at Branscombe Real Estate and occasionally in her husband's accounting practice. A community volunteer throughout her life in the Hospital Auxiliary, St. Catharines Lionettes and other organizations she was also an active member of Memorial United Church, now amalgamated in Silver Spire United Church.
