HVEZDA, John 2008-09-30 Mr. John Hvezda age 89 years, resident of Nolalu, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2008. John was born and raised in Fort William and attended St. Peter‘s School. He worked as a stevedore for Canada Steamship Lines for many years. He then went on to own and operate Whitefish Lake Cabins for almost 35 years. He was also a member of St. Peter’’s Church. John is survived by his sisters Helen Paradis and Teresa Bevilacqua, brother-in-law Walter Wywrot and sister-in-law Anita Hvezda, nieces and nephews and other relatives. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Agnes Hvezda, brothers Joseph, Frank and Peter, sister Anne Wywrot and brothers-in-law Clement Paradis and Anthony Bevilacqua. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel with Rev. Msgr. P.M. Stilla V.G. of St. Patrick‘s Cathedral officiating. Interment will be in St. Andrew‘s Cemetery. Vigil prayers will be offered on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel. MATSON, Louise 2008-09-30 Louise Mattson, 81, known to her friends as “Lucy”, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2008, in Crystal Falls. She was born in Podpreska, Slovenia on January 22, 1927, to John and Louise (Janez) Cimprich. In 1935 she moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario where she graduated from Port Arthur Technical and Vocational High School in 1945. She married George Mattson on February 22, 1947, in Port Arthur, now Thunder Bay. The couple moved to the U.S. in 1950, making their home in Crystal Falls. They were married for sixty-one years. Lucy was a stay at home mom for many years, venturing out into the work force in 1968. Lucy worked as an Executive Secretary for Keweenaw Land Association and was later promoted to Office Manager. She was active in church groups: a member and officer of Churchwomen, presided on the board of directors of United Lutheran Church, served on the Stewardship committee, the alter society, and the funeral circle. Lucy was a member of Michigan State Home Extension. She served as a Local Leader, on the County Board, and on the State Board of Directors. Lucy loved her husband, George, her family and her many friends. She had a zest for life and was always ready for adventure whether it was a trip around the globe or a day with “the girls.” Her vivacious presence is greatly missed. She is survived by: her loving husband, George; a daughter, Patricia (Gordon), a son, Robert (Dawn); three grandchildren, Tracy (Pete), Kari (Mike) and Eric; five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Toni, John, Cassidy and Madeline; a brother, Frank (Violet), a sister-in-law Zita, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by: her parents and brother John. Visitation will be 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls. MILLER, Clifford Arthur (Dusty) - Retired Canadian Armed Forces 1973 and Kingston General Hospital 1989. On Monday September 29, 2008, in his 84th year at home in Sydenham, surrounded by nature - the place he loved. Dusty will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all the people his life has touched: especially his loving partner Carol Whyman, his sons David (Sydenham), and Larry (Judy); his grandchildren: Craig, Curt and Casey King (Ian), a great-granddaughter, Rhianne (Vancouver); his sister Noreen Kimber, niece Janet Howard & her daughter Sarah; several cousins including Mary Walker (Craig) and Susan Hill (Richard); brother-in- law Dave Devall; sister-in-law Joan Cameron; the Whyman family and many special friends; including his Springer Spaniel “Storm“. Predeceased by his wife Helen and special aunt, Barb Park. Dusty was born in Brown Hill on Friday November 13, 1924. He spent 29 years in the Canadian Army, travelling around the world with the United Nations, followed by 17 years at Kingston General Hospital. His joy of life was shared with many - whether it was jiving at the RCHA Club, paddling or sailing on a lovely lake, enjoying the open air and cottage life, golfing, travelling or hitting the slopes & deep snow trails at Killington, Vermont. Dusty will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, unique poetry, cartoons, paintings, his ability to recite poems and limericks learned years ago and his whimsical garden & wine cellar. He will live on in the hearts of everyone he knew for death only ends a life, not a relationship. BIGG, Annette (nee Frappier) 1944 - 2008 - After a long illness Annette passed on to a better life to join her son Danny. She is survived by her cherished Allan, husband of 43 years. STEVENS, Marianne 2008-09-30 1941- 2008 After a valiant fight in which she never lost faith, Marianne went peacefully to live forever with the Lord on Friday, September 26, 2008. Born in Derry, NH, on January 15, 1941 to Clif and Val Smith, Marianne grew up in Salem, NH, and graduated from Woodbury High School in 1958. She attended the University of New Hampshire for four years, and upon graduation she joined the United States Navy where she served as a First Lieutenant in Key West, FL, and in Norfolk, VA. While in the Navy, she met Lt. David Stevens from Beaver Falls, PA, and they were married in Salem, NH, in 1963. They had three daughters, and were living in State College, PA, until 1975, when they immigrated to Canada to live on a Christian Community in Upsala, ON. After her husband passed away in a boating accident in 1979, Marianne continued to live in Upsala, and raised her daughters on her own. She was always strong and steadfast in her faith. She was very active in the church and involved in the community, including teaching and tutoring for many years. She was well known for her love of gardening and was always planting trees and flowers. She loved traveling, and history and discovering new places. She volunteered with the Upsala Ambulance and later became a P1 Paramedic with Superior North EMS at the Upsala Base where she worked for 15 years, until her retirement on November 1, 2006. Marianne will always be loved and missed by her family, especially by her mother, Val Smith, sister Martha Campbell, and sister and brother-in-law Hope and Ed Shaffer; and forever by her three daughters, Sarah Stevens, Susie Sinclair (Archie) and Hannah Hudgin (Andy). Her nine grandchildren, David, Denis, Abbie, Lucie, Nickie, Yasmine, Tyler, Brendan and Ryan, will all miss the special times hearing Gramma’s stories. She will also be greatly missed by her countless friends, many of whom she considered her family. A Memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the Community Hall in Upsala on Sunday, October 5th, at 11:00 am. Interment will be private. DOHOO, Roy McGregor Passed away peacefully in hospital on 28 September, 2008 in his 90th year. Born in Hornchurch, Essex, England on 3 September, 1919, Roy was, for 59 years, the beloved husband of Alice Rosemary (Mary). He was the loving father of Sheila (Thierry) and Ian (Susan), grandfather of Philippe (Carmela), Paul (Jessica), Jeff and Carolyn and great-grandfather of Nicholas, Isaac, and William. A service of celebration of his life will be held at Rideau Park United Church on Thursday, 2 October at 11:00 a.m. A reception with the family will follow the service.
