FRIESEN, Kenneth Peacefully on July 18, 2008 in his 62nd year. Survived by his children, Jonathan and Julia, his sister, Susan Moore (Michel Landriault) and brother Glenn (Tammy). Pre-deceased by parents Bob and Mavis (Hobbs) and brother Brian (Mary). Ken will be remembered by many for his past work as a successful and talented recording engineer and Juno Award winner who worked with many of Canada's finest musicians. RONEY, Elizabeth Alice (nee Brown) February 28, 1925 - July 21st, 2008 It is with sorrow we announce that Betty, 'Nanny Betty, Gramma Betts', loving mother, grandmother and sister passed away peacefully in Ottawa, Ontario. She is survived by her children, Michael (Cynthia), Donna (Michael Heney), Tom (Maria) and Liz ; eight grandchildren, Connor, Brandon, Taylor, Jonathon and Danielle Roney, Kaitlin and Mike Heney and Braedan Nesbitt; three sisters, Winnie Walters (Ted), May Brock (George) and Jean Foran and two brothers, Paul Brown (Rose) and Lorne Brown (Mickey). Betty was predeceased by two of her children, Elizabeth and Patrick, her parents, Fred and Mary and her brothers and sisters, Helen Dubeau (Gerry), Robert Brown (Risty), Vivian Brennan (Les), Lois Miller (Ernie), Fred Brown (Irene), and Tom Brown (Jeanine). She was Auntie Betty to 49 nieces and nephews and Godmother to Patty Brown. She will be deeply missed by all of her family and friends. Betty was born in Quebec City and spent her summers with her 11 brothers and sisters on the family farm in Lac Beauport. She was educated and a boarder at Bellevue Convent in Quebec City. Upon graduation, she was awarded the Lieutenant Governor General's medal for achievement in geometry. After moving to Montreal, she embarked on a singing career that led her to an ongoing engagement at the Manoir Richelieu where she met and later married Joe Roney. After raising her children and moving to Ottawa, she returned to administrative work on the support staff teams of Ministers of Fitness and Amateur Sport, Iona Campanola and Steve Paproski. She continued working in the government until her retirement. For the past five years, Betty has been residing at the Palisades Club and has been an active member of the choir where she once again got to enjoy her love of singing. The family would like to thank the residents and staff there for all her care and enjoyment. Betty's funeral will be held Saturday, August 16th at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church at 685 Walkley Road Ottawa, Ontario, at 11:00 a.m. Please join us for refreshments and sandwiches in the church hall afterwards. An internment will follow at St. Malachy's cemetery in Mayo, Quebec. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Betty to Tuberous Sclerosis Canada. GARDINER, Lorne M. (1924-2008) Lorne passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at Perrin’s Clinton View Lodge, Clinton, near his home at Stanley Bridge, Prince Edward Island. He was 84 years old. This remarkable man leaves a huge and precious legacy to his family and friends. Treasured husband to Joyce, who died in 2002 of Alzheimer’s disease. Cherished father of Elizabeth (Ron), Alexander “Sandy” (Julie) and Jim (Nancy) and proud and loving grandfather of Scott and Jessie. Also, step-grandfather to Mandy and Jenn and step- great-grandfather to little Lane. Pre-deceased by his brothers, Stuart and David and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Beth. Lorne was uncle to several nieces and nephews. Special long-time friend of Ian and Joan Brown, to whom his family is forever grateful. Born and raised in Ottawa, Lorne met his future wife, Joyce Howe, also from Ottawa, when they were both teenagers. Some years later, he entered the RCAF and was a navigator on a Lancaster in the Second World War. He went on to earn a forestry degree from the University of New Brunswick and a PhD in forest entomology from McGill University. Lorne will be sorely missed by his family and by so many friends in Canada and around the world. An idealist and a romantic, he touched our lives in such rich and diverse ways. An outstanding scientist, naturalist, a talented poet, writer, teacher, chef, a player of guitar and bagpipes, a voracious reader and lover of language. He was equally at home in the bush, a concert hall, a library, or a canoe — in Scotland, England, northern Ontario or P.E.I. And through it all, was that incredible sense of humour. At once caustic and gentle, his appreciation for the irony and subtlety that make up all our lives, was always razor sharp. Sincere thanks are extended to all the P.E.I. doctors, nurses and caregivers who, over the years, have shown such kindness to Lorne and Joyce and to the family. Resting at the Moase Funeral Home, Summerside, where visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July, 31, 2008, from 2-4 p.m. only. A memorial service will take place at a later date in Ontario. OBITUARY JOHN RUSSELL WATT Peacefully on July 22, 2008 in his eighty-third year, with his son by his side, John Russell "Johnny" Watt leaves behind his wife of fifty-three years, Tess and his son Norm of Toronto, his sister-in-law Edna (Robert Arnold d.1979) of Montreal, and her children Audrey (Godin) and nephews Melvin, Bobby and John and their extended families. He was the third child born in Ville St Pierre in 1925 to Henry and Janet Watt (nee Boyd). Following the untimely deaths months apart in 1927 of his father and his 9 year old brother Douglas, John's mother struggled to keep her two remaining sons (older brother Arnold) with her while she worked to support the family. She often took in boarders to help pay rent, while working nights cleaning at the Raleigh bicycle factory in Montreal. John spent his childhood between their first floor flat on Rue du Couvent, his mother's relatives in Worcester, Mass., and with Uncle Alec Boyd in Lachine who all helped to raise and shape him during the Depression years. At the young age of 12 John was already a 'rink rat' at the Forum, where he witnessed the longest game in NHL history between his beloved Maroons and Detroit, and got his hide tanned for coming home at 2 am. As a young hockey player himself, he was proud to have been a childhood team mate of Doug Harvey in both hockey and softball. His love of sports stayed with him his whole life, whether it be watching les Canadiens conquer the world of hockey with their numerous Stanley Cup victories, taking in a game at Delormier stadium watching Jackie Robinson's season with the Montreal Royals, or enjoying his season tickets at Percival Molson stadium for the great Alouette teams of the 50's. He made a devoted sports fan of his son, who remembers Jr. Canadiens games at the Forum, major league baseball at Fenway Park, the 'new Shea' Stadium in 1964, seeing the World Cup Champions from England play soccer at Expo 67' and childhood afternoons playing golf with the 'old guys' at BeauChateau golf course on the south shore. Norm still plays baseball and hockey with the passion he learned from his father who was the consummate fan. One of his great thrills was to take his Dad to the 1st World Series game played in Canada in 1992. John began working at Dominion Engineering Works (a subsidiary of GE) in Lachine as a floor sweeper at the age of 16. He stayed for 42 years, retiring as the General Foreman of Shop 1 with over 200 staff, a pretty big accomplishment for a little guy from Ville St. Pierre who never finished grade 9 at Montreal High. The only time he left was a short two years overseas beginning in 1944 to 1946 to be trained in the RCAF as a tail gunner on Lancaster bombers. Once back from the war, he would spend time at the Scandinavian Club dances with his buddy Jimmy Manley who was the bartender there. That's where he met Jeanne Newton and her younger sister Tess Obodofsky (a couple of young women from a Lithuanian family in Ville Emard). John and Tess were married in 1955 and set up a small shop on Rue St. Jacques, Johns Handy Store, where they lived in two rooms at the back with their son. Through this time, John became the official chronicler of the family history through the eyes of the 8MM movie camera where he captured the Cousins and Normans early years on film. After five years of working days at the machine shop supervising the building of turbines for the burgeoning Hydro stations in northern Quebec, and evenings at the store, John and Tess were able to save enough to move the family to their dream house in Dorval in March of 1961. As an active member of the Masonic fraternity (St. George's Lodge, #440) John took his volunteering seriously and was committed to his duties of hospital visiting and representing the Lodge at Brothers funerals, offering support to grieving family members. He was considered by many to be both thrifty and a wise financial planner, long before many knew what an RRSP was. His memories of childhood poverty stayed with him, even when memory loss became a serious daily challenge. His skills in retirement planning and investing were in constant demand from family, friends and even his own colleagues at the shop. Just before taking ill with pneumonia for the first time in 2004, John at 78 years young, acted as Executor for an old friend in the Brockville area. In 1989, once both he and Tess had retired, they moved to Toronto to be closer to their son, settling in Guildwood which reminded them of their West Island home of 28 years. Tess and Norm would like to extend warm thanks to the staff of Rockcliffe (Scarborough) and Lakeshore Lodge (Etobicoke) for their caring attitudes and above and beyond service in the last two years of Johns life. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will take place in Montreal sometime in the fall. RONAGHAN, Walter E. Passed away peacefully at KGH on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at the age of 94 years. Survived by his loving wife Dora of sixty-six years, children Doreen Ronaghan of Canmore, Rachelle (Rick) Riley of Kelowna, Ronald (Marilyn) of Hinton, AB, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, brother Frank of Calgary and sister Jean Wrolson of Rocky Mountain House, AB. Sadly predeceased by his daughter Terrilyn in January 2007 Walter joined the Air Force in 1940 and served extensively on both coasts. He and Dora were married in 1942. Walter left the Air Force in 1943 and joined Barber Machinery. He had a long successful career in the oil field industry. He always looked forward to golfing and fishing. LYSAK, Irene 2008-07-25 Mrs. Irene Lysak, age 92 years, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2008 in hospital. Irene was born on July 28, 1916 in Brandon, Manitoba. She was the youngest of 8 children born to Gunner and Martha Johnson. Irene lived and worked in Kakabeka Falls, Ontario for over 70 years. She came to Kakabeka with her husband Ed Cross in 1939 where they raised 2 children, Gary and Darce. For 7 years Irene was the Postmaster at the Kakabeka Falls Post Office. In 1954 she married Peter Lysak and together they raised a son, Paul. Throughout the years Irene worked for a variety of organizations in Kakabeka, while caring for her family and her garden that she very much enjoyed. She is survived by her sons Darce and Paul (Sara), 6 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Irene was predeceased by Ed Cross in 1948, Peter Lysak in 1989, son Gary in 1982, 6 sisters and 1 brother. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held in Conmee Cemetery at a later date. The family would like to thank Hogarth Riverview Manor staff for their care and devotion during Irene‘s stay at the facility and the staff on 2C at TBRHSC for their compassion and care for Irene. Also a special thanks to Jean Beyko for her friendship over the years. She was very much her Angel. GORDON, Bill - Bill Gordon of Tofield, Alberta passed away on June 25, 2008 at Mississauga, Ontario at the age of 57 years. He is survived by his loving wife Pati; three sons Frank (Megan), Billy and Patrick; his mother Dorothy Gordon; two brothers James (Carole) and David (Stephanie); one sister Nanci Gordon, numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Bill was predeceased by his father Frank Gordon. A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m., July 20, 2008 at Bardo Lutheran Church, 4737 - 57 Ave., Tofield, Alberta, and was officiated by Rev. Kevin Langager. Memorial donations may be made Tofield Scouts or the Bardo Memorial Fund. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment followed the service at the Tofield Cemetery. FOURNIER, Julia Marie (nee Cuomo) - Peacefully passed away, in Sudbury, Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 at the age of 75 years. Daughter of the late Francisco and of the late Michaelangela (nee Magalia) Cuomo. Stepdaughter of the late Adeline (nee Cristo) Cuomo. Beloved wife of Andrew “Andy“ Fournier of Sudbury. Loving mother of Katherine Tallon (Patrick), Alan Fournier (Rosemary) and Patricia Rafuse (Terry). Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Kevin Armstrong (Jessica), Aaron Fournier, Amanda Fournier, Ryan Rafuse and by her 5 great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Anthony Cuomo (Filomena), Ralph Cuomo (Aline), Rita Miranda (Jasper) and Ida Leon (late Reginald). Predeceased by her brother Sam. The focus of Julia's life was her loving family and friends who will miss her dearly. She enjoyed spending time at her summer cottage as well as working with pottery. Julia was an active member of her community having been a volunteer member with the Red Cross, the Multicultural Center and the Sudbury Regional Hospital (St-Joseph's Health Care Centre). BERTRAND, Bertha (Walker) - In loving memory of Bertha (Walker) Bertrand, 96 years, who passed away Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 at the Pioneer Manor. Bertha was born in Toronto, where she married Theodore in 1930. She worked as a clerk for 23 years at the Sudbury Court House and then with the Department of Lands and Forests. Bertha was a Leader with Girl Guides and Brownies in the Gatchell area, she was an active volunteer for many years with several charities. She was a member of the Lively Senior Citizens and enjoyed ceramics and sewing. Bertha will be lovingly remembered as a generous and kind woman who loved people and always maintained an open door policy both at home and at her camp. Beloved wife of Theodore Bertrand predeceased 1971. Loving mother of Robert (wife Gloria) of Copper Cliff and Muriel (husband Martin McAllister) of Lively. Cherished Nanna of Cheryl (husband Michael Meaden), Anne Marie (husband David Greer), Heather (husband Andre Bourrie), Gregory (wife Holly), Debbie (husband David Carroll) and great grandchildren Colin, Nick, Mitchell, Jocelyne, Catherine, Stephanie, Jenna, Eric, Caleb, Robert, Marc, Mark, Maria, Erin, Zakery and Mason. LEONARD, Raymond Theodore - It is with sadness that the family of Raymond Leonard announces his sudden passing at his residence July 19, 2008. Colasacco, Nicola - Dec 6, 1929 - June 25, 2008 - Born in Capodaqua Italy, he immagrated to Timmins in 1953. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gilda, son Marco (Tanya), daughter Angela Mango (frank) and 2 cherished grand-children Guilia and Monica. Also survived by his siblings, Genesia Marini (Domenic), Mimina Fontecchio (adamo), Ercolino (Fiorella), Quintino (Florence), Lucy Melchiorre (Govanni), Palmina Furletti and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Annuziata in 1975, father Pasquale in 1951, brother Joe Colasacco (Madeline) and brother in law Sergio Fuletti in 2007. Nick loved his time painting. It was his passion along with fishing and hunting. One can find his paintings hanging in many homes and offices across Ontario. He was best known for his landscapes and the various Mine Headframes across Northern Ontario. He left Timmins to pursue his dream and opened an Art Gallery in Toronto. He will be missed by his family and friends. On Saturday, June 26th, 2008 at 5:00 pm, there will be a Mass in his memory at Sacred Heart Church. God bless you Nick and thank you for the memories. WISE, Sylvia G. - Peacefully at her residence in Kingston with her children by her side on Thursday, July 24th in her 68th year, after battling with cancer for 15 months. Beloved mother to Debbie Henderson (nee Rowe) and Allen Rowe. Grandmother to Les Henderson and Chris Henderson. Daughter of the late Arthur and Loreene Wise and sister to the late Joey Wise. Sylvia retired after 32 years of service at Correctional Services Canada. She will be fondly remembered by friends and family as a warm, kind and thoughtful person. Special thanks to the Palliative Care Team for the compassionate care that mom received.
