Gordon Banks (Shirley) of Orillia, sister-in-law of Betty Machibroda of Ottawa, and Jack Bragg of Brantford. Dear aunt of Douglas Banks (Carmen) of Ottawa, Lorrain Maxwell-Coghlan (Peter) of Australia, Joan Gardave of Ottawa, and Catherine Hicks of London. Fondly remembered by cousin Claudette (Herb) and best friend of Ruth Acteson, both of Florida. She will be remembered also by many relatives and friends throughout Canada and United States. Joan graduated from the Brantford General Hospital School of Nursing in 1946 and it became her life-long profession. OATTES, Merle Ebert - Peacefully, with his family by his side, Merle passed away at the Brantford General Hospital on Saturday, June 14th, 2008 in his 86th year. Cherishing memories of happier times are his wife of almost 61 years, Doreen and children Dave (Cheryl), Dale (Barb), Gary and Marilou. Fondly remembering their grandpa are Jeremy & Ryan (Andrea) Oattes; Courtney, Kelly & Natalie Oattes and Scott & Graham Ferguson. Great granddaughter Amelia Oattes was a “ray of sunshine“ during Merle's last difficult months. Merle is also sadly missed by brother Carl (Carol), as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by sister Eleanor and parents Graham & Pearl. Born in Michigan City, Indiana, Merle moved with his family to Almonte, Ontario in the early 1930's. After graduating from Queen's University in 1944, Merle worked for Bell Telephone as a supervising engineer for 19 years before chasing his dream of guiding young people. He taught physics and science at North Park Collegiate for 22 years. His students will remember his gift for quick wit and dry humour. Merle was a member and president of the Telephone City Kiwanis Club and a volunteer with the Literacy Council and CNIB. Following a private interment service at Mount Hope Cemetery, his family will welcome friends at a reception to celebrate Merle's life on Thursday, June 19th at 3 p.m. at the Charing Cross Reception Suites, adjacent to DENNIS TOLL FUNERAL HOME, 55 Charing Cross. STRINGER, Joyce Ruby (nee Wilson) - After a short but brave battle with cancer, on June 14, 2008, at Brampton Civic Hospital; at age 77. She is loved and missed by husband Lloyd, children Lynda (Brian) Baxter, Ken (Karen), Glenn (Wendy), and Karen (Walter) Bordne; and grandchildren Kerry (Jeff) Linton, Kristy Baxter, Katelynn Stringer, Lynsey and Bradley Bordne. Predeceased by sister Eunice (Jim) Mercer. Sister-in-law to Lois (Don) Mackie, Noreen (late Ross) Kane, and Robert (late Gayle) Stringer. Special aunt to many nieces and nephews. HOOPER, Tracey Dawn May 19, 1965 - June 14, 2008 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Tracey Dawn Hooper of Calgary, AB on Saturday, June 14, 2008 as she succumbed to a courageous struggle with cancer. A loving daughter, sister, and aunt she was predeceased by her father Edd Hooper and is survived by her mother, Mae Hooper; her siblings, Wally Hooper (Suzanne Gott), Linda Douglas (Marty), Karen Bischoff (Jeff), Lori Hooper (Marian Hansen); her nieces, Megan and Leah Douglas. Many of her happiest memories were shared in long-time friendship with John Shearer. Tracey was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta; graduated from Lord Beaverbrook High School; then studied Costume Design at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. She returned to devote her life to her theatre community throughout her twenty-two year career as wardrobe mistress at Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, Stage West Theatre, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Banff Centre for the Arts, and for numerous other theatrical productions across Canada. Tracey aka Trak was a very talented, special lady whose caring, generous ways, quick wit and infectious laugh will be sorely missed by all. LAVENDER, Harry 2008-06-17 After a long courageous battle with cancer and diabetes, Mr. Harry Lavender, age 87 years, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph‘s Hospice care on Saturday, June 14, 2008 with family by his side. Harry was born on August 9, 1920 in Fort William where he spent his whole life. He attended Drew Street Public School and Selkirk High School during his youth and worked at Eaton‘s Foodateria on Victoria Avenue. He joined the RCAF in September 1940 at Brandon, Manitoba and trained at Number Two Bombing and Gunnery School at Mossbank, Saskatchewan. On February 6, 1942 he met the love of his life, Mildred Cowan, at Temple Gardens in Moosejaw. They were married August 1, 1942 in Sutherland, Saskatchewan and remained so, celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary on August 1, 2007. Harry served overseas in England from October 1944 until September 1945. After the end of the war Harry started his 37 year career with Canadian Pacific Railway, retiring in 1984. Harry was very much a family man, enjoying gardening, fishing, bowling and was an accomplished horseshoe player. Harry will be sadly missed by his wife, Mildred; sons: Carl, Toronto, Jack (Janice), Red Deer, and Albert (Marilyn), Barrie; sisters: Violet DeLong, Lilian Buttman (Larry) and Eva Forbes, Victoria; brother Ernie (Helen); and daughter-in-law, Corinne Goderich. Harry is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Carrie Benchea (Tom), Nashville, TN, Chris (Lisa), Oakville, Jill Youngberg (Brendan), Calgary, Jocelyn (Eric Colaiezzi), Calgary, Jennifer (Justin Henry), Ottawa and Michael, Barrie. Harry adored his great grandchildren, Sarah and Nathan Benchea, Nashville, TN, Jaime and Jessica Lavender, Oakville. As well, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews will miss Uncle Harry dearly. He was predeceased by his father James; mother Eva (Fraser); brother Jim and most recently brother-in-law Glen DeLong. Harry‘s comedic approach to life touched all the lives of those who met and knew him and he will be sorely missed. Many thanks to all the nurses of 4 North Palliative Care at St. Joseph‘s Hospital for Harry‘s loving care. Hélène Dorion 1961 - 2008 "C'est grand la mort. C'est plein de vie dedans". (Félix Leclerc) Bonjour, si vous lisez ces quelques lignes, ce sera parce que je me suis finalement rendue au bout de ma vie terrestre en ce 15 juin 2008. Je fais désormais partie de l'énergie universelle. Mon âme s'est envolée vers ce monde parallèle où tout n'est que paix et lumière. Je ne sais si je reverrai mes amours précédemment décédés, mais il me fera chaud au coeur de "serrer dans mes bras" mon frère François, ma mère Sylvette et mon père Gilles. S'il y a un paradis des chiens et des chats, j'espère aussi y revoir notre chien Pirate et ma chatte Chatoune. Le cancer m'a permis de vivre intensément les dernières années de ma vie et de la partager avec passion et courage avec tous ceux que j'aime. J'ai eu une vie remplie, intéressante, enrichissante et heureuse. Une vie pleine. Je remercie entre autres mon ami fidèle, Ghislain, de m'avoir accompagnée jusqu'au bout de mon souffle. J'envoie un bouquet de tendresse à ma cousine Claire, un clin d'oeil à mon amie Norma, un "Fantastique!" sonore plein d'affection à mon oncle Gilles, et une grosse collade à mon oncle Yvon et à sa femme Danielle. Tous m'ont épaulée jusqu'à la fin et à leur manière. Je vous dis un GROS merci d'avoir fait partie de mon aventure. J'envoie aussi plusieurs bouteilles à la mer pour saluer avec affection, outre Martine, mon amie d'enfance, mes ami(e)s de toujours, d'hier et d'aujourd'hui ainsi que ceux et celles vivant au loin. Ils se reconnaîtront. Une pluie de bises tout particulièrement à Nicole et à Marcel ainsi qu'à Erna, en Belgique. CRAFT, JUDY V. - The unexpected passing of Judy Craft of Saint John, NB, wife of Mel Craft occurred on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at her residence. Born in Sussex, NB on February 20, 1952 , the daughter of Arthur and Sheila (Powell) Goddard. Judy loved to spend her time bowling and playing horseshoes. Survived by her daughter, Krista (Mike) Webb of Hampton, NB; her grand-daughter, Isabelle; her sister-in-law, Lily (Alfred) LeBeau; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and her nephew. Frank Arthur Menzies The death of Frank Arthur Menzies husband of Joan (Kirkpatrick) Menzies of Whitney, NB occurred at his late residence on Monday, June 9, 2008 at the age of 67. Born in Whitney, NB, Frank was the son of the late Clarence and Gertrude (Sharpe) Menzies. Frank lived on the family farm, which dates back to 1835. After graduating from NSER high school in 1958 he attended Maritime Forest Ranger School and graduated in 1962. Over the years, Frank was involved in sports including minor baseball and hockey. He was a member of the NSER Alumni, Northumberland Co-op board of directors, Miramichi Exhibition, Labor Board of New Brunswick, president of Newcastle Minor Hockey, past chairman of the Scottish Heritage Association Inc., and past president of the Highland Society of New Brunswick at Miramichi. He was the Human Resources manager at the Repap Mill for several years. Following his retirement in 2000, Frank devoted his time working on his farm and woodlot. Besides his wife, Joan; Frank is survived by one daughter, Susan Menzies Nowlan (Joey) of Whitney, NB; one son, Allan Menzies of Whitney, NB; one sister, Joan Somers (Frank) of Whitney, NB; and four grandchildren, Kayla, Aidan, Haley and Maguire; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Frank is predeceased by one sister, Betty Parks. The family received visitors at Bell's Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The Funeral Service was held from the Sterling Bell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 2 PM with Rev. Gary Churchill officiating assisted by Pastor Peter Culberson. Organist was Debbie Churchill. Soloist Rev. Gary and Debbie Churchill sang "Tears Are a Language" and "How Can I Live without Jesus" and Soloist Susan Culberson sang "Tenderly He Watches Over Me" Active Pallbearers were: BJ Dawson, Tommy Hallihan, Boyd Parker, Weldon Dunnett, Pat Lyons and Doug White. Honorary Pallbearers were Russell Jardine, Doug Prebble, Edison Carroll, Louis O'Shea, Bob Howe, Joe Veriker, Ricky Hosford, Ed Clouston, Jimmy Fitzpatrick Ted Curry, Charles Hubbard, Carl Nowlan, Hubert Whitney, Carl Hallihan and Simon Dunn. Burial followed in the Whitney Baptist Church Cemetery, Whitney, NB. In Frank's memory a donation may be made to ALS Society, NB Extra Mural Program or Miramichi Wesleyan Building Fund. MILLER, Margaret (nee McCorkell). Peacefully at the Wales Home in Richmond, Quebec on Sunday, June 15, 2008, in her ninetieth year. Beloved wife of the late George F. Miller. Loving daughter of the late Mabel and John McCorkell. Dearest Aunt of Carol and Dave Williams, Nancy Clark, Ken Carr, Bill and Bonnie Skinner, Renee Hislop and Craig Skinner. Also survived by many great-nieces and nephews. LUOMA, Aarne Johannes September 20, 1936 - June 11, 2008 Aarne was the youngest son of John and Sanna Luoma. He attended Three Hills Ridge School, Trochu Valley High, Olds Agriculture School and then SAIT, taking Radio and Electronics Technology plus Electronic Engineering at U of C and U of A. He apprenticed in radio with B.G. Mathieu and Bob's Radio and TV (Donnelly). He was very active in the Trochu community, supplying PA systems for official openings for over twenty years. He installed the sound systems in the Trochu arenas, swimming pool, the United Church and the old community hall. He was an amateur HAM Radio Operator and belonged to several HAM Radio groups. He took flying lessons and owned several airplanes, with his own private airstrip on his farm. He was a member of the Kneehill Flying Club, Three Hills Flying Club, The International Flying Farmers, Alberta Flying Farmers as well as member of the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association. Aarne was one of the members instrumental in developing the current airstrip for the Three Hills Airport. Aarne had the pleasure of flying two Ultra-Lite aircrafts which were built in Trochu, a Gama-Gobee for Larue Smith et al, and a Jodel-D9 built by Art Pierce, Art Meding, Pat McKee and Aarne. This "work of Art" is now located at the Reynolds Museum in Wetaskawin, Alberta. Aarne was a member of the Trochu Community Band from 1952 to 1978, playing the Sousaphone and was the last Band Master. He has been a member of the Trochu Rifle and Pistol Association since 1952. He has been a member of the Trochu Fire Department since 1957, his roles have covered Fire Chief, Trainer and Arson Investigator. We understand he is the oldest active volunteer firefighter in the Province of Alberta. He also served on the Board of the Three Hills Gas Co-op and the Trochu & District Community Hall. He thoroughly enjoyed using his earth mover to prepare the location of the current Trochu Community Centre. Aarne also grew seed with his life-long friend and brother, Sulo. His other interests included cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, pedal biking, metal and woodworking, photography, mechanics, locksmithing, computers and every type of electronic gadget. Aarne was predeceased by his father John in 1979, his mother Sanna in 1991, and his brother Sulo, just three months ago. His is survived by his nephew Larry Luoma, nieces Ruth Luoma, Barbara Ek and Donna Perry as well as many great-nieces and nephews. The Luoma family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and recognition to the Foothills ICU staff and the neurosurgeons for their professional care and concern for Aarne during his short stay. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the Trochu Fire Department or STARS Air Ambulance in Aarne's memory.
