LILLICO, Clifford - Cliff entered into rest, after a valiant struggle, at Victoria Manor, with his loving family by his side, on Monday, June 16, 2008. MacDOUGALL, Philomena R.N. 1915 - 2008 (nee Beaton) Longtime resident of The Arnprior Villa passed away in the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital on Saturday, June 14, 2008 in her 94th year. Beloved wife of the late Raymond MacDougall and loving mother of Paul of Nova Scotia. Special aunt to JoAnne Bretzlaff (Lorne) and Geraldine Babineau (David). Phil graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay Nova Scotia and practiced as a registered nurse in Kirkland Lake and Ottawa. She came from a large Cape Breton family and will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Resting at The Boyce Funeral Home, Chapel, Visitation and Reception Centre 138 Daniel St. N., Arnprior where family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 18th from 1 - 2:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. John Chrysostom Church at 3 p.m. Private family interment in Ottawa on Thursday. LAVENDER, Harry 2008-06-17 After a long courageous battle with cancer and diabetes, Mr. Harry Lavender, age 87 years, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph‘s Hospice care on Saturday, June 14, 2008 with family by his side. Harry was born on August 9, 1920 in Fort William where he spent his whole life. He attended Drew Street Public School and Selkirk High School during his youth and worked at Eaton‘s Foodateria on Victoria Avenue. He joined the RCAF in September 1940 at Brandon, Manitoba and trained at Number Two Bombing and Gunnery School at Mossbank, Saskatchewan. On February 6, 1942 he met the love of his life, Mildred Cowan, at Temple Gardens in Moosejaw. They were married August 1, 1942 in Sutherland, Saskatchewan and remained so, celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary on August 1, 2007. Harry served overseas in England from October 1944 until September 1945. After the end of the war Harry started his 37 year career with Canadian Pacific Railway, retiring in 1984. Harry was very much a family man, enjoying gardening, fishing, bowling and was an accomplished horseshoe player. Harry will be sadly missed by his wife, Mildred; sons: Carl, Toronto, Jack (Janice), Red Deer, and Albert (Marilyn), Barrie; sisters: Violet DeLong, Lilian Buttman (Larry) and Eva Forbes, Victoria; brother Ernie (Helen); and daughter-in-law, Corinne Goderich. Harry is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Carrie Benchea (Tom), Nashville, TN, Chris (Lisa), Oakville, Jill Youngberg (Brendan), Calgary, Jocelyn (Eric Colaiezzi), Calgary, Jennifer (Justin Henry), Ottawa and Michael, Barrie. Harry adored his great grandchildren, Sarah and Nathan Benchea, Nashville, TN, Jaime and Jessica Lavender, Oakville. As well, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews will miss Uncle Harry dearly. He was predeceased by his father James; mother Eva (Fraser); brother Jim and most recently brother-in-law Glen DeLong. Harry‘s comedic approach to life touched all the lives of those who met and knew him and he will be sorely missed. Many thanks to all the nurses of 4 North Palliative Care at St. Joseph‘s Hospital for Harry‘s loving care. Funeral services for Harry Lavender will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, June 20, 2008 at St. Thomas Anglican Church, Westfort, with The Ven. Archdeacon Andrew Hoskin officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. at the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James. Hélène Dorion 1961 - 2008 "C'est grand la mort. C'est plein de vie dedans". (Félix Leclerc) Bonjour, si vous lisez ces quelques lignes, ce sera parce que je me suis finalement rendue au bout de ma vie terrestre en ce 15 juin 2008. Je fais désormais partie de l'énergie universelle. Mon âme s'est envolée vers ce monde parallèle où tout n'est que paix et lumière. Je ne sais si je reverrai mes amours précédemment décédés, mais il me fera chaud au coeur de "serrer dans mes bras" mon frère François, ma mère Sylvette et mon père Gilles. S'il y a un paradis des chiens et des chats, j'espère aussi y revoir notre chien Pirate et ma chatte Chatoune. Le cancer m'a permis de vivre intensément les dernières années de ma vie et de la partager avec passion et courage avec tous ceux que j'aime. J'ai eu une vie remplie, intéressante, enrichissante et heureuse. Une vie pleine. Je remercie entre autres mon ami fidèle, Ghislain, de m'avoir accompagnée jusqu'au bout de mon souffle. J'envoie un bouquet de tendresse à ma cousine Claire, un clin d'oeil à mon amie Norma, un "Fantastique!" sonore plein d'affection à mon oncle Gilles, et une grosse collade à mon oncle Yvon et à sa femme Danielle. Tous m'ont épaulée jusqu'à la fin et à leur manière. Je vous dis un GROS merci d'avoir fait partie de mon aventure. J'envoie aussi plusieurs bouteilles à la mer pour saluer avec affection, outre Martine, mon amie d'enfance, mes ami(e)s de toujours, d'hier et d'aujourd'hui ainsi que ceux et celles vivant au loin. Ils se reconnaîtront. Une pluie de bises tout particulièrement à Nicole et à Marcel ainsi qu'à Erna, en Belgique. Je laisse dans le deuil également plusieurs oncles, tantes, cousins et cousines des familles Bernier, Dorion et Lizzio. Gerald Adrian "Jerry" Rice Gerald Adrian "Jerry" Rice - 56, of Beaverbank, Nova Scotia, passed away surrounded by his family, Friday, June 13, 2008 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, VG Site, Halifax. Born in Truro on October 31, 1951, he was a son of the late Clifford and Agnes (MacPherson) Rice. He was raised in Kentville, Nova Scotia and spent each summer at the family cottage in Kingsport, a place very special to him. He graduated from Horton High School and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He was stationed in Deer Lake, Corner Brook and Holyrood, Newfoundland. Jerry and Sharon then transferred to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where Jerry worked Halifax Detachment, Cole Harbour Detachment and was involved with the integrated police services in the Halifax Regional Municipality. He served as Court Liaison Officer for more then 10 years, from where he retired. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Oakfield Golf Club. He was also an avid history buff and enjoyed working out at the gym. He is survived by his wife, the former Sharon Mary Adair; two sisters, Dorene (Gary) Cleveland, Kentville; Sister, Betty-Lou Rice, Mount Saint Vincent, Halifax; mother and father-in-law, Edward "Jim" and Evelyn Adair, Petitcodiac, New Brunswick; sister-in-law, Cass Rice; brother-in-law, Clayton (Susan) Adair; several nieces, nephews and four godchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, JoAnn Rice Radford and a brother, James Rice. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008, Father Lloyd O'Neil officiating. WATERALL, CHARLES JAMES - Charles James Waterall, loving husband of Florence (Lewis) Waterall, of the Ridgwood Veteran's Wing passed away on June 15th, 2008. Born 1928 in Minto, NB he was the son of the late Charles J. Waterall Sr. and Queenie Pearl (Banister) Waterall. Charles was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War serving with the 1st Canadian Air Borne. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Fredericton and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 22. Charles owned and operated King Pin Bowling Lanes for many years. Besides his loving wife Florence, he is survived by his daughters, Tanya-Lee Waterall of Nerepis and Patricia Elaine Wasson (Duane) of Minto; brothers, Gerald Albert Waterall (Whillamenia) of Toronto, John Bush, Quispamsis; sisters, Mary Murray (Donald Vance) of River Herbert, NS and Joy McKeggan (Garnett) of Amherst, NS; grandchildren Patrick, Shannon, Shawna, Rhonda and Trevor; great-grandchildren, Isaiah James, Dillon James and Emma Lee; several cousins, nieces and nephews. HALL, LILLIAN MAGGIE - The death of Lillian Maggie Hall, 98, occurred on Saturday June 14, 2008 at the Loch Lomond Villa. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Alfred and Marcella (Kieley) Mason. Lillian was a retired employee of Irving Oil Ltd. and was a former member of Royal Canadian Legion #14 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed singing and playing piano and had entertained at various nursing homes. She was the loving mother of Marlene Curtis of Saint John and Doris Toole of Ottawa; and grandchildren, Bonnie (Kitchener) and Linda; and great-grandchildren, Anthony and Jacqueline (Kitchener) and Michael and Christina. She was predeceased by two sisters and five brothers. DILLON, MARION MADELINE Marion (Brown) Dillon, wife of the late Stanley Dillon, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, June 13, 2008. Marion was in her 89th year. Born on July 28, 1919 in East Brighton, NB, she was a daughter of the late John and Alice (Billings) Brown. For many years, Marion and Stanley could be found enjoying every Saturday selling goods at the Boyce Farmer's Market. Marion was a former member of the Central Hainesville Baptist Church. She faithfully attended the Burtt's Corner Baptist Church and was a member of the choir until she was unable to attend. Marion was also a member of TOPS # 3813. Thanks to her family and many caregivers Marion was able to remain at home throughout her lengthy illness. Marion is survived by eight children, Gerald (Lynda) of Kingston, ON, Donna (Ron) Osborne of Burtt's Corner, NB, John (Betty) of Edmonton, AB, Joyce (Reno) Bourgoin of Burtt's Corner, NB, Kathleen (Jerry) Brown of Bear Island, NB, Norma (Stephen) Brewer of Burtt's Corner, NB, Madeline (Livain) Martin of Fredericton, NB and Karl (Debbie) of Burtt's Corner, NB. Frank Arthur Menzies The death of Frank Arthur Menzies husband of Joan (Kirkpatrick) Menzies of Whitney, NB occurred at his late residence on Monday, June 9, 2008 at the age of 67. Born in Whitney, NB, Frank was the son of the late Clarence and Gertrude (Sharpe) Menzies. Frank lived on the family farm, which dates back to 1835. After graduating from NSER high school in 1958 he attended Maritime Forest Ranger School and graduated in 1962. Over the years, Frank was involved in sports including minor baseball and hockey. He was a member of the NSER Alumni, Northumberland Co-op board of directors, Miramichi Exhibition, Labor Board of New Brunswick, president of Newcastle Minor Hockey, past chairman of the Scottish Heritage Association Inc., and past president of the Highland Society of New Brunswick at Miramichi. He was the Human Resources manager at the Repap Mill for several years. Following his retirement in 2000, Frank devoted his time working on his farm and woodlot. Besides his wife, Joan; Frank is survived by one daughter, Susan Menzies Nowlan (Joey) of Whitney, NB; one son, Allan Menzies of Whitney, NB; one sister, Joan Somers (Frank) of Whitney, NB; and four grandchildren, Kayla, Aidan, Haley and Maguire; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Frank is predeceased by one sister, Betty Parks. The family received visitors at Bell's Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. LUOMA, Aarne Johannes September 20, 1936 - June 11, 2008 Aarne was the youngest son of John and Sanna Luoma. He attended Three Hills Ridge School, Trochu Valley High, Olds Agriculture School and then SAIT, taking Radio and Electronics Technology plus Electronic Engineering at U of C and U of A. He apprenticed in radio with B.G. Mathieu and Bob's Radio and TV (Donnelly). He was very active in the Trochu community, supplying PA systems for official openings for over twenty years. He installed the sound systems in the Trochu arenas, swimming pool, the United Church and the old community hall. He was an amateur HAM Radio Operator and belonged to several HAM Radio groups. He took flying lessons and owned several airplanes, with his own private airstrip on his farm. He was a member of the Kneehill Flying Club, Three Hills Flying Club, The International Flying Farmers, Alberta Flying Farmers as well as member of the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association. Aarne was one of the members instrumental in developing the current airstrip for the Three Hills Airport. Aarne had the pleasure of flying two Ultra-Lite aircrafts which were built in Trochu, a Gama-Gobee for Larue Smith et al, and a Jodel-D9 built by Art Pierce, Art Meding, Pat McKee and Aarne. This "work of Art" is now located at the Reynolds Museum in Wetaskawin, Alberta. Aarne was a member of the Trochu Community Band from 1952 to 1978, playing the Sousaphone and was the last Band Master. He has been a member of the Trochu Rifle and Pistol Association since 1952. He has been a member of the Trochu Fire Department since 1957, his roles have covered Fire Chief, Trainer and Arson Investigator. We understand he is the oldest active volunteer firefighter in the Province of Alberta. He also served on the Board of the Three Hills Gas Co-op and the Trochu & District Community Hall. He thoroughly enjoyed using his earth mover to prepare the location of the current Trochu Community Centre. Aarne also grew seed with his life-long friend and brother, Sulo. His other interests included cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, pedal biking, metal and woodworking, photography, mechanics, locksmithing, computers and every type of electronic gadget. Aarne was predeceased by his father John in 1979, his mother Sanna in 1991, and his brother Sulo, just three months ago. His is survived by his nephew Larry Luoma, nieces Ruth Luoma, Barbara Ek and Donna Perry as well as many great-nieces and nephews. The Luoma family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and recognition to the Foothills ICU staff and the neurosurgeons for their professional care and concern for Aarne during his short stay. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the Trochu Fire Department or STARS Air Ambulance in Aarne's memory. GARKUT, George Zdzislaw - Peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer at the Stedman Community Hospice on Friday June 13, 2008, at the age of 80. Loving husband of Mary. Beloved father of Julian, John (Mary) and David Garkut. He is predeceased by his parents Jan and Marcela Garkut and by his sisters Isabella, Zofia and Teresa. George is survived by his sister Danuta (Pierre) Haas and by his nephew John Szpala. He will be sadly missed by his extended family members and friends. George enjoyed fishing and gardening in his spare time. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. BLACK, Steve 2008-06-17 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Steve Black announce his passing on June 12, 2008. Steve was born in Fort William on March 31, 1927, the youngest of six children, to Eva Black. Steve was an avid sportsman who participated in all sports as a youth, but his passion was hockey. He played minor hockey in Fort William until his junior career where he played for the Port Arthur North Stars in 1945-46. In 1946-47, Steve played in Oakland of the Pacific Coast League and in the next season he was promoted to St. Louis of the American Hockey League where he played on the “Thunder Bay Kid” line alongside Johnny Raynak and Pop Backor. In 1949-50, Steve was called to the Big Show with the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL. This spectacular season saw Steve named as the team Rookie of the Year and the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup. Steve was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks part way through the following season. In 1952, Steve commenced his Western Hockey League career with the Calgary Stampeders where he led the team in scoring for 3 consecutive seasons. Steve married Josie Carso in 1950 and when his first daughter was born in 1955 he decided that it was time to move back to Thunder Bay to be with his family. Steve began working at the LCBO in 1955 and retired as a store manager in 1985. Steve was a member of the Elks Hockey Organization, the Knights of Columbus, the Ortona Legion, the DaVinci Centre, and Chapples Golf Course. He coached minor and junior hockey for years and played with the Elks Oldtimers. Steve was a fisherman, a blueberry picker, a mushroom picker, a gardener, and a rancher who raised his own cow each year. Steve‘s greatest passion in life was his family, in particular his four grandchildren: Michael, Jessica, Alison, and David. He took great interest in all of their endeavors. Steve was worshiped by Mary Jo‘s dog Packer who he visited daily. He also enjoyed his daily coffee group every morning at the Adanac Hotel. Steve was predeceased by his wife Josie in 1994, his mother Eva and brothers Mike and wife Ann, Joe and his wife Elsie, Bill and Peter and his sister Mary and her husband John and his dear niece Pat Marcon. He is survived by his daughter Judy Murphy, her husband Brad and their children Michael and Alison and his daughter Mary Jo Fitzpatrick, her husband Paul and their children Jessica and David, his brother-in-law Tony Carso, sister-in-law Inez Black and numerous nieces and nephews who all adored their Uncle. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 when family and friends will gather for the Funeral Mass in St. Dominic’s Church at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Daniel Lapolla c.s. Interment will follow at St. Andrew’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations please be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Foundation in Steve‘s memory.
