Beloved husband of Beverley (Pokie) Patterson of fifty-two years. Dear father of Wendy Patterson, Mark Patterson (Doreen) and Tammy Matheson (Kyle). Dear grandfather of Ryan, Jordan, Tamara and Cheyenne. Brother of Harold (Donna) and Gordon. Brother-in-law of Winston (Marge) Tahamont and Marlyn Kornack (Earl). Also survived by several nieces and nephews including Linda Benham. PAUL, Ulo. After a long battle with diabetes, Ulo left peacefully in his daughter's arms Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the age of eighty. He will be sadly missed by his wife of fifty years, Hilja Paul, his daughters Maarika (Martin Fafard) and Siiri (Leo Tang), his grandchildren Aleksi and Kristian Paul Fafard and Sierra Tang. HAGERMAN, Thomas "Tom" Revis September 15, 1943 - June 13, 2008 It is with great sadness we announce Tom's passing on June 13, 2008 at age 64, ending his three-year battle with lymphoma. The youngest of eight children born to Bruce and Ada Hagerman, Tom grew up on the family farm near Sylvan Lake. Tom is survived by his loving wife Dixie of thirty-seven years; son Jordan Hagerman of Sylvan Lake; daughter and son-in-law, Tanya and Gary Taylor of Calgary; sisters Agnes Duval (Edmonton), Gertrude and Ewart McDonald (Red Deer), Aneta Halvorson (Sylvan Lake); brother Jack and Val Hagerman (Kelowna and Gull Lake); sister-in-law Shirley Hagerman of Markerville; mother-in-law Barbara (Edwin) Jahraus of Lacombe; in-laws Jyl and Gerald Talsma of Lacombe, Ted Strathman (Marge Wray) of Red Deer; as well as many special nieces, nephews, and cousins and a great group of friends. HERON, Gladys T. On June 13, 2008 Gladys T. Heron of Calgary, widow of John Kenneth Heron, passed away at the age of 90 years. Born in Watson, Saskatchewan she lived in Spalding, Saskatchewan; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Sherridon, Manitoba and her last fifty-six years in Calgary. Gladys is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Lynden and Heidi of Calgary and Lance and Lise of Calgary, as well as her grandchildren Chantale, Stacie and Chad. Gladys is also survived by her brothers Ray Voldeng of Fort McLeod and Mervin and Lily Halvorson of Calgary, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gladys' thoughts were always of others. Gladys was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother with a sense of humor that touched all whose lives passed through hers. Mom, we thank you for your love and devotion. JOHNSTON, Harrol "Harley" Joseph 1928 - 2008 Harrol Joseph Johnston of Calgary passed away at home in the loving arms of his family at the age of 80 years. Harley was born on March 19, 1928 in Coleman, AB. A gentleman and gentle man, he was generous of heart and soul to all who knew him. His honour and integrity reflected a giant among men. Dad's true passion in life was his family. Over the years, family and friends have gathered to enjoy celebrations and undoubtedly be tickled by his dry wit and sense of humour. Dad also loved his cars, golf, a good game of cards, and in recent years, winter retreats with Lucille to Mesa, AZ. A pipefitter by trade, Harley worked for the CPR for forty-two years in the Ogden and Alyth shops. He was also a member of the Navy Reserve out of HMCS Tecumseh. Harley leaves behind his sweetheart and wife of fifty-eight years, Lucille; their children, Joseph and wife Doris, Linda Silvius and husband Dana, Bruce and wife Teresa; grandchildren Cynthia, Luke, Dave, Aaron, Christian and Adam; great-granddaughter Grace; three brothers and three sisters, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Belle and Dan Johnston, and brother Don. EGERS, DONALD OTIS The home going of Donald Otis Egers of Hardwood Ridge, NB, occurred on Friday, June 13th, 2008 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton. Born in Linton, NB, he was the husband of the late Norma (Boylen) Egers and the son of the late John T. and Esther (Mowatt) Egers. Donald is survived by three daughters, Gayle Egers of Hardwood Ridge, Sharon (Stephen) Hiltz of New Zion, and Donalda (Tom) Cole of Hardwood Ridge; three brothers, Max (Verna) of Moncton, Bennett (Lucy) of Langley, BC, and Carl (Catherine) of Hardwood Ridge; one sister, Carolyn "Ted" of Niagara Falls, ON; one grandson, Curtis; four granddaughters, Ava, Catherine, Sara, and Cailey; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his family thanks his homecare worker Barbara Walsh. In addition to his parents and his wife, Norma, he was predeceased by brothers, Russell, Willard, and Weldon; and sisters Irene Smallwood and Alleyne MacPherson. Don was a World War II veteran having served in Europe with the Army Service Corp. After he returned from overseas he worked many jobs in Ontario including the St. Lawrence Seaway Project. In 1961, he moved back to Hardwood Ridge, New Brunswick with his family. Here he worked in the coalfields as a dragline operator and a foreman. Don was also a hobby farmer with a great love for horses. He had been a member of the Newcastle Bridge United Baptist Church/United Baptist Church of Minto for 43 years serving in many areas including deacon, Assist. Sunday School Supt., trustee, choir, and cemetery committee. Don left a great legacy of being faithful, jolly, and consistent. The family will receive visitors at the Minto Funeral Home (327-3490) on Monday June 16th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The Royal Canadian Legion will conduct a tribute service at 7 PM. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday June 18th at the United Baptist Church of Minto with the Rev. Phil Styles officiating. Interment will take place in the Newcastle Bridge Baptist Cemetery immediately following the service. A reception will be held at the church hall following the interment. PARKER, Walter James (Joe) October 25, 1952 - June 13, 2008 Joe passed away peacefully in the early morning hours at Mt. Pleasant House in Calgary. He is survived by his sister, Holly Helias (Alain) of Ste. Mesme, France, brothers Lorne and Jack of Calgary, a special sister-in-law Rae, aunts Kay, Babe and Bernice of Cambridge, ON, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents Everard and Holley, his brother Ray, and nephew Terry. Despite his severe handicap, he loved life, his family, music, movies and the Calgary I.O.O.B.'s where he was so proud to be appointed as the "Deputy Fuzz". MEI, Oscar - In loving memory of Oscar Mei, 81 years, who passed away Sunday, June 15th, 2008 at the SRH - St. Joseph's Health Center. A well respected and liked life resident of Copper Cliff. He was a senior clerk at the Iron Ore Plant retiring in 1982 with 39 years service at INCO. He was a life member of the Copper Cliff Italian Club serving in numerous executive positions. Oscar was always quick to help others. He was always a gentleman. Edgar Lavigne, 66, of Côte Bleu Drive, Bathurst, which occurred Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, after a lengthy illness. He worked at The Royal Canadian Legion for over 30 years as chief steward. He was a member of the Herman J. Good VC Br. 18; also a member at the Squire Green Golf Club. Born in Bathurst, he was the son of late Adelard and Sarah (Cyr) Lavigne. Beside his wife, Barbara (Young), he is survived by; one son, Darryl (Terri) of Brampton, Ont.; two daughters, Kim (Danny) Henry of South Tetagouche, Shelley Lavigne (Fernand) of St. Anne, Gloucester; four brothers, Cyr Lavigne (Sylvia), Gérald Lavigne (Faye), Vaughan Lavigne (Velma), all of Bathurst, Ken Lavigne (Dorothy) of Medecine Hat, Alb.; two sisters, Patricia Gallant (Floyd) of Bathurst, Diane Adams (Clayton) of Medecine Hat, Alb.; four grandchildren, Chad, Kelsy, Brandon and Heidi; several nieces and nephews. SHEPPARD, Donald R. - Passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Peterborough on June 14, 2008 at the age of 80 years young. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Nancy, son John (Shelley) and daughter Jane (Warren), his grandchildren Rebecca, Jordan, and Deanna (the apples of his eye), and his special friend Barbara Beck. Don is predeceased by his wife Mary Jane (nee Baker) and friend Judy Goddard. Don is survived by his sister Betty Cross (Bob), and step-brothers and sisters Bill, Dave and Lindsay Nelson, Jean Rae and Barb Elmhirst. Don is predeceased by sisters Mary, Bud, Kate and Shirley, and brothers Hud and Jack. Don taught accounting for 24 years at Sir Sandford Fleming College and has since enjoyed a 15 year retirement. He donated his time to the Continuing Complex Care Program at the P.R.H.C., Meals on Wheels and to the ladies' lunch at St. Andrew's Church. Don also enjoyed travelling and spending time with his many families (Sheppards, Nelsons, Bakers, Goddards and Becks) and friends. AMMIRATI, Salvatore (Sam) February 23, 1946 - June 13, 2008 On Friday, June 13, 2008 our beloved father, husband, brother, uncle and friend passed away prematurely, and has joined his favourite brother-in-law, John Cortese, with God at the age of 62 years while fishing at McGregor Lake, AB. Salvatore was a well-liked and respected founding member of the Del-Rich Meadows community just outside of Calgary. He was born in Castelsilano, Italy on February 23, 1946, the second youngest brother in a family of nine. He left his hometown as a youngster to find work and contribute to his family back home. He voluntarily joined the Italian military at the age of twenty, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant and earned a medal of bravery during his service. In 1971 he returned home and married Maria Cortese. They immigrated to Calgary together and began their lifelong union. As newlyweds, Sam and Maria quickly began a family raising two children together while he worked continually as the founder of Sam's Decorating for thirty-seven years. His business was successful thanks to his dedicated work ethic, quality craftsmanship and memorable personality. Sam's good humour and infectious laugh left everyone around him feeling comfortable and entertained. He will be forever remembered by his friends and family for his operatic voice and his passion for singing. Sam will be missed and loved by all who knew him. Besides his beloved wife Maria, Sam is survived by one son, Matteo and his fiancee, Jen Watson; and one daughter, Lisa and her fiance, Russ Porosky. He also leaves behind seven siblings, Saverio, Sisina, Marietta, and Caterina, all residing in Italy; Isabella, Vincenza, and his favourite brother, Francesco, all of Calgary; and all his relatives, in-laws, nieces, and nephews who will miss him dearly. CARSON, John Jarvis Died Sunday, June 15, peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at the Montfort Hospital after a brief and rapid decline in health. John was predeceased by his wife, Elspeth Herbert. Much beloved by his children Elizabeth (Ian Hutton), John (Elisa Barbarese), Faith (Barry Bellamy), Deborah (Ted Tunis), Daniel (Brenda Lillico), Kitty (Wayne Corey), his companion-caregiver Derrick Nazareth, and his grandchildren Dianna, Towani and Pascale, Philippe, Aaron and Leah, Adam, Matthew and Carson, Alexander, Eve and Benjamin, and great grandchildren, Xavion, Mahalia, Carson, Clea, Natasha, Daniel, Joseph and Elizabeth as well as his Rolston and Herbert nieces and nephews. John was born October 11, 1919 in Vancouver to parents Walter Miller Carson and Florence Jarvis. He spent happy summers on the Sunshine Coast, cottaging, camping and later working at YMCA Camp Elphinstone. He was President of the Student Council at Prince of Wales Secondary School and subsequently obtained his BA at UBC. He met Elspeth in 1938 on an Atlantic crossing and after a whirlwind shipboard romance, they corresponded for five years, marrying in 1943. He served in the Canadian Army during WWII and attained the rank of Captain. Following the war, he joined the consulting firm of Woods Gordon, settled in Toronto and built a cottage in Muskoka. He subsequently worked for Ontario Hydro and obtained his Masters degree in psychology from U of T. In 1956 he returned to Vancouver as Vice President of BC Electric, subsequently BC Hydro. He was active in community life St John's Ambulance, the Children's Foundation, and the Vancouver Board of Trade. He bought a cottage on the Sunshine Coast and was a devoted weekend cottager. In 1964, he was seconded to Ottawa to work on the Glassco Commission. He was subsequently invited to implement the recommendations and appointed by Lester Pearson as Chairman of the Public Service Commission. He served with distinction, implementing many significant human resource management initiatives and representing Canada on UN reforms of staffing. In 1976, he was named Dean of the Faculty of Management at the University of Ottawa where he continued teaching until 1989. Working with CIDA he set up a faculty of management at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura (Sri Lanka) and hosted many Sri Lankans in Canada, including Derrick Nazareth. He served on the Board of the YMCA, CUSO and was named an officer of the Order of Canada in 1977. He received honourary degrees from York University, the University of Ottawa and Sri Jayawardenapura. He loved his cottage on Heney Lake where he hosted family and friends over the decades for reunions, singsongs, bonfires and charades. He maintained active connections with his extended family and friends through a family newsletter, the Chapel Street Press. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Thursday, June 19th, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the McGarry Family Reception Centre.
