HAMILTON, Jean Forbes 2008-03-30 It is with great sadness that Jean’s family announces her passing on Saturday, March 29th, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Care Group palliative care/hospice unit after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jean was born and raised in Port Arthur and graduated from P.A.C.I. She married Ernie Hamilton in 1943 and began to raise her family- a daughter Susan and a son Ian. When the children were young the family moved to Ottawa. As the famiy grew older, Jean commenced work with the Pulp and Paper Association of Canada. When Ernie accepted the position as chief electrical engineer with Domtar Paper in their head office in Montreal, the family relocated. Jean lived in Baie d’Urfe on the West Island of Montreal for the past forty years returning to Thunder Bay in 2006, taking up residence at Glacier Ridge Retirement Home. While in Montreal, Jean was active with her sorority, worked at the Pointe Claire library and actively persued her passion of duplicate bridge where she attained the rank of silver life master and met many new friends. Jean was an avid reader, loved the theatre and travel, and patiently tended her tomato and perennial garden. Jean will be dearly missed by her family. She is survived by her daughter Susan Cressman (Ken) of Thunder Bay, and son Ian Hamilton of Frederic, Maryland. She was a devoted grandmother to Karen McQueen (Steve), Jamie Cressman (Heather Speak), Sheri Cressman, Ken Cressman Jr.(Sofia), all of Thunder Bay, and Darlene Hamilton of Perry, Georgia Her greatgrandchildren-Kyle, Mitchell, Ainsley, Jenna, Ryan, Bradley, Alicia, Emily, Abigail and Carter were a significant part of her life. Jean was predeceased by her husband Ernie in 1983, sisters Margaret McGregor(1977), Rita McGregor(1963), her father Colin Forbes McGregor (1936) and her mother Mary Ella McGregor (1961). Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 207 S. Brodie Street on Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Care Group Palliative Care Unit or any charity of your choice.

SPIRES, Leicester Knight (Lester) 89, passed peacefully on Saturday morning, the 29th day of March 2008, at the Granite Ridge Manor, Stittsville, ON. Leicester Knight was born on Friday, the 27th day of December 1918, at the family home in New River, NB; son of the late Florence Edna (Murphy) and Stephen John Spires. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; Leicester was the last surviving member of his family. Born in Dartmouth, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Irene (Walters) James. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, and she took great pride in her home. She was an avid gardener and reader. She also loved sewing, crafts and tole painting. She was a former member of the Upper Stewiacke Garden Club, Ladies Auxiliary of Meagher's Grant Fire Hall, and a volunteer at many community events. She loved nature and caring for animals. Elaine is survived by her husband, Ken; daughters, Angela (Billy) Shannon, Anita (John) Pickup, Trina (Tim) Sampson; brother, Ken (Jeanne); grandchildren, Laura, Christian, Holly, Danielle, and Michaela. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Elaine was predeceased by her brother, Jackie, and aunt, Caroline Mills. COOPER, Wyman Ernest COOPER, Wyman Ernest - 79, Upper Stewiacke, passed away March 28, 2008, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Pope's Harbour, he was a son of the late Henry and Lilas (Murphy) Cooper. He was a carpenter by trade and a gardener by choice, but his dedication was to his family. He could be counted on for a lively game of cards with friends or family. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 54 years, the former Berniece Chisholm; sons, Michael (Lesley), Upper Stewiacke; Greg (Lisa), Halifax; Calvin (Christine), Truro; David (Alka), Brampton, Ont.; daughter, Shelly (Bruce) Wilkie, Fall River; grandchildren, Alex, Nick, Chris, Lauren, Rachael, Justine, Courtney, Nicole, Brian, Matthew, Kyle, Ashton; brothers, Melvin, Walter, Wallace, Raymond; sisters, Mae, Pearl, Gladys, Annie, Lillian, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Stanley, Irvin, Melvin, Sydney, Arthur, and sister, Eva. Cremation has taken place. She was an avid golfer, bridge player, and a long-time member of Brightwood Golf and Country Club and Grace United Church in Dartmouth. She is survived by her son, Ronald (Ellen), Enfield, and her daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Zinck (William), Dartmouth. She is also survived by her sister, Myrtle Bradford, Ont.; grandchildren, Lisa, Laura, Tamsen, Steven, David, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Eric; six brothers and three sisters. Cremation is under the care of Donald K. Walker Funeral Directors Ltd. (469-5601), Dartmouth. A memorial service will be held in Grace United Church at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 31, with Rev. Stephen Fram officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. PETTIPAS, Douglas Thomas PETTIPAS, Douglas Thomas - 69, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 26, 2008, in the VG Site, QEII. Doug was born and raised in Dartmouth. He started his working life with the RCAF and ended with 35 years of driving taxi to and from the airport. Doug thoroughly enjoyed his cars as well as his time spent driving his motorcycles. Doug will be missed by his wife, Phyllis (Chipman); daughters, Michelle (J.B.) MacKinnon, Cole Harbour, and Cathy Pettipas, Sackville, N.B., as well as his brother and dear friend, Don (Mary) Ocala, Fla.; his stepsons, Stan (Adele) Hennigar, Jody (April) Hennigar, and Donald Penny. He will be remember and loved by his adored grandchildren, Ricky, Catherine, Conlan, Anthony, Kayla, Julia, Crystal, and Angela, as well as by his beloved dog, Jack. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Mark and Catherine (Higgins) Pettipas; his first wife, Angela (Forward), and by brothers, Jed and Leo. There will be a private family burial that will take place at a later date. The family would like to send out a special thanks to all of our family, friends and neighbours for their loving support and prayers during Dad's illness. NIXON, Frank W. (b. Frank Nikish) November 14, 1916 - March 23, 2008 Frank Nixon, formerly of Lethbridge and of Leader, SK, passed into the great beyond on Easter Sunday at age 91 in Calgary. Frank was born near Southfork, SK, to Mike and Agnes Nikish. He is predeceased by his first wife, Beatrice, brother John (Nikish), sister Hazel (Dordu), and daughter Barbara (Mensch). He is survived by his wife Verna (Peel), son Gregory, and son-in-law Fred (Mensch), as well as by his grandchildren Thalia, Meagan and Julian. Also still amongst us are his sister-in-law, Gwen, various cousins, and wife Verna's children Eileen, Kathleen, Marge, and Rob, and their families. A long-time barber in Leader, Lethbridge and Calgary, Frank served in the Canadian army in Europe during WWII and was a lifelong member of the Fraternal Order of Masons. Frank's other passion was golf: His steady aim was relentless and at eighty-three he defeated his son and son-in-law a final time before health issues sidelined him. Honest to the core and respected by all, the world is now a smaller place for those who knew him. "Do your best" was his admonition. It was all he ever asked of anyone. BAILEY, Phyllis. 1936-2008. On Friday afternoon, March 28, Phyllis Elaine Bailey passed away at the age of seventy-one. Born in Montreal to Anne and Max Bailey, community leaders in both the Jewish and social justice milieus. Phyllis was a life long educator and passionate advocate of human rights and social innnovation. A retired instructor and department chairperson at Champlain College; she was also a mother to Max and Jeremy Wallace, and proud grandmother of Hannah Wallace, Emma Wallace and her only grandson Dashiell Atticus York. She leaves daughters-in-law Morag York, Alice Conlin and Michelle Booth. CROWELL, Andrew Franklin CROWELL, Andrew Franklin - 83, Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville, formerly of Kentville and Wolfville, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2008, in the home. Born in Bear Point, he was a son of the late Freeland and Jennie (Shand) Crowell. He served with the RCAF in Canada during the Second World War. Following the war he continued his military career with many Canadian postings. He was posted in Germany for many years where he and his wife, Thelma, enjoyed touring throughout Europe. His last posting was with C.F.B. Greenwood. He was later employed as a commissionaire with Acadia University and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was also a long-time member of the Masonic Order. He and Thelma enjoyed camping, especially at Blomidon Provincial Park. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Faulkner, Dartmouth; son, Wayne (Glynis), Ottawa; sisters, Barbara Crowell, Barrington; Helen (Carl) Smith, Northeast Point; brothers, Roswell (Lena), Barrington Passage; Freeland Jr. (Jean), Bear Point; Donald (Ruth), Clyde River; grandchildren, Randall, Perry, Derrick, Andrew, Mark, Matthew, Candace, Christopher and Shona; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Josh, Sarah, Michael, Jordan, Kailey, Evan, Stephanie, Kailey, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Thelma Young; daughter, Melda Horne; sister, Doral Sears, and brother, Carroll. Cremation has taken place under the direction of White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, and there will be no visitation by family request. SUNDHOLM, Helen (nee Kallio) - It is with deep sadness that the family of Helen Sundholm (nee Kallio) announces her death on Wednesday March 26, 2008. She was born on August 6, 1928 in Sudbury to Christine (nee Lepikko) and Anton Kallio who predeceased her. She is also predeceased by her sister Eva and her husband Rudy Regimbal. On November 26, 1949 she married the love of her life Carl William (Bill) Sundholm of Sudbury who survives her. She lived all her life in the Sudbury area and Kipling. She leaves a legacy of life through her children Cindi Burton (Ford) of Lively, Evalin Garber (Tom) on Naughton, Tony and Bruce of Sudbury. She is fondly remembered by her grandchildren Laura, Curtis, Helena (Curtis Ransom), Luke Burton; Grant (Chantale) and Evan (friend Ashley) Garber. She also leaves behind to carry on her spirit by her great grandchildren Jayden, Mackennah, Olivia Garber and Hannah Ransom. Her sister-in-law Aino Koski (nee Sundholm) and her husband Lasse also predeceased her. She will be dearly missed by Eva and Rudy's children Betty-Jane, Cathy, John, Judy and Mimi; Andy and Miriam Hankonen and their families. She was a member of the Penage Road Womans Institute, Whitefish Girl Guides, Whitefish Lionettes, Finnish Senior Citizens Club of Sudbury, and the Lockerby Legion. SAARE, Mark Lenard - It is with heavy hearts that Mark's family shares the news of his unexpected passing March 3 in Sudbury, Ontario. Predeceased by loving parents Gunnar Saare and Noreen Speechly Saare and older brother Christian Saare, Mark will be missed and fondly remembered by friends and family in Sudbury, Toronto, Kelowna, Montreal, the United States, England, Australia and Estonia. Born in Sudbury in 1960, Mark attended Lasalle Secondary, Laurentian University and Cambrian College, all of Sudbury. Friends will remember him for his impish sense of humour and joy of music, dance and theatre. Mark loved an audience and performed in school bands at Lasalle, played the viola with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, reveled in being surrounded by girls in dance classes at the Arts Guild and took centre stage in theatre presentations at Cambrian College. Naturally gifted in so many ways, a favourite family story was while sister Tess endured grueling auditions to attend Canada's National Ballet School in Toronto, Mark was invited to join the school after a couple of simple jumps convinced the director of his potential. Mark declined, but enjoyed being the centre of attention. Following post-secondary studies, Mark joined his sister working in the telecommunication and computer communications industry in London and Toronto. He returned to Sudbury in 1991. Mark was a dear friend and loyal brother to Tess who will hold him in her heart forever. Words cannot express the depth of her sadness, but memories of dancing in the backyard in summer rainstorms, belting our rock tunes while driving home for holidays, and laughing till tears flowed and stomachs ached watching Monty Python will always be cherished. Life being Mark's sister was always an adventure and Tess was fortunate to be with him for his final few days. Many thanks to the kind and caring doctors and nurses on the 4th floor, SCU and ICU of St. Joseph's Health Centre, Sudbury, who made those days as comfortable and dignified as possible. A special thanks to Uncle Ilmar and Raija who are always there for the tough times. A service will be held May 20th, in Sudbury to honour Mark's life, with further details to follow. HAEFELI, Arwed “Fred“ - In loving memory of Arwed “Fred“ Haefeli, 68 years, who passed away Saturday, March 1st, 2008 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Centre. He was a very kind and generous man who was well liked by all who knew him. He was honest and sincere and did his best in whatever he did and was willing to give everyone a chance. GODDARD, Florence Lillian (nee Lahti) - With deepest sadness, the family announces the passing of our cherished Mother and dear friend Lillian Goddard, 83 years, at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - Memorial Site, Tuesday, March 25th, 2008. Lil was a voracious reader and had a passion for solving crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed many nights with the girls playing bridge. Lil loved the outdoors and was most at home at the Black Lake and Johnnie Lake Camps. She was in her element cross-country skiing and playing golf. While raising her three boys, Lil returned to the workforce as an Executive Assistant to the President of Cambrian College and Dean of Health Sciences retiring in 1988 after 16 years. Lillian's greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her three grandchildren, who she treasured. Beloved wife of Morley Goddard predeceased 1972. Loving mother of Morley (Heather) of Mississauga, Marcus (Jennifer) of Rothesay, N.B. and Spencer of Toronto. Cherished Grandma Lil of Lauren, Charlotte, and Spencer.
