Frederick Davidson Orchard STILLWATER LAKE, NS - Frederick Davidson Orchard, 63, of Stillwater Lake passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008 surrounded by his loving family followed by a brief but difficult battle with cancer. Fred was born in Moncton, N.B., to the late Oswald Frederick and Helen (Davidson) Orchard. He served in the Canadian Navy for 12 years and joined the Canadian National Railway in 1974, retiring in 1999. Not one to sit idle, following retirement, he worked for the Progressive Rail in Montreal and Kentucky, New Brunswick East Coast Railway in Campbellton, and as a real estate broker for Century 21 in Lower Sackville. In the past year, Fred enjoyed working with the Canadian Corp of Commissionaires at the Halifax Port of Authority. Throughout his career, Fred earned the respect and friendship of everyone he met. Fred was a past recipient of the President's Award of Excellence from the Canadian National Railway. He was also past president of the Riverview, NB., Kinsmen Club. Fred was devoted to his family. His children could always count on him to be there when they needed him. This would include late-night "taxi" service where he heard all but told nothing. Fred loved playing Santa for his family and friends and was an avid gardener. He loved traveling, especially to Las Vegas. Fred concluded his life as he lived it, concerned about his family rather than himself. Fred is survived by his wife, the former Ethel Laybolt, his loving wife of 40 years; sons, Kevin (Brenda), Moncton; Kory (Pam), Lantz; daughter, Kim (Paul) Barry, Cambridge, ON; grandchildren, Melissa, John, Papa's special man Ben and another grandchild due in June; sisters, Fran Stewart, Halifax; Barbara (Ron) Law, Calgary; Aunt Grace Orchard, Bridgetown; Aunt Elva Orchard, Norton, N.B.; numerous nieces and nephews. Fred enjoyed the companionship of many close friends, especially Victor and Shirley Feaver and Frank and Jeanette Stone. The family would like to extend special thanks to the doctors and nursing of staff of 8A at the Victoria General Hospital and his niece Barbara Stewart. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Homes. A memorial service will be held 1 pm Thursday March 20th in St. Luke's United Church, Upper Tantallon. Rev. Dubé Louis 1917 - 2008 « Je vous laisse en héritage la plus belle expérience qui a guidé ma vie: L’amour en partage » À l’hôpital de l’Enfant-Jésus, le 16 mars 2008, à l’âge de 90 ans, est décédé monsieur Louis Dubé, époux de Roselle Lehoux. Il était natif de Saint-Vallier de Bellechasse. Il a obtenu un doctorat en psychologie de l’université de Rennes en Bretagne. Homme d’une vaste culture, professeur émérite de la Faculté des sciences de l’éducation de l’Université Laval. Il a enseigné pendant 40 ans: 15 ans au Collège de la Pocatière et 25 ans à l’Université Laval. Louis Dubé, excellent pédagogue et très bon communicateur, consacra la plus grande partie de sa vie à l’enseignement. Il contribua par son livre, ses conférences et différents écrits à transmettre son savoir et son amour de la vie. HOSKIN, HARRY JAMES Harry James Hoskin, 88, passed away peacefully in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, March 16, 2008. Born in Halifax on March 20, 1919, Harry was the son of the late Stanford and Mabel (Young) Hoskin. Harry attended school in Halifax, graduating from the Halifax Academy in 1937. Throughout his life, Harry received a great deal of pleasure from sports and athletic events, through participation as an official and as a spectator. During his teens, Harry was the reigning Diving Champion of the Maritimes for several years and then became a diving official. He also competed in gymnastics, rugby, swimming and track and field events. Harry took great pride in watching his children and grandchildren as they followed in his athletic footsteps. He served in the Militia both before and after the Second World War. He was a decorated war veteran, having served overseas with the Artillery and the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, being wounded in 1945. Harry retired from the services in 1978 with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. In 2002, he was honoured by receiving the Netherlands Commemorative Medal by the Dutch Government for taking part in the liberation of that country during the Second World War. Harry started his work career in his teens at William Stairs Sons and Morrow. After more than 40 years with the company, he retired in 1978 as General Manager of the Plumbing and Heating Division, and co-owner of the company. Following his retirement, he worked with CESO, assisting Native communities throughout Nova Scotia. He was a member and Director of the YMCA, chairman of the Canadian Paraplegic Association of Nova Scotia, Life Member of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating, Member of the Royal United Services Institute of Nova Scotia, Past President of the Halifax Commercial Club and Past President of the Golden-K Kiwanis Club of Halifax, member of the Royal Canadian Legion Vimy No. 27, raised to St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 2 in May 1951, 32nd Degree in the Scottish Rite, Noble Philae Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. Harry was presented with his 20 Year Service Award for volunteering from the IWK Board of Directors. He was a member of Edgewood Oxford Street United Church in Halifax. He enjoyed several hobbies and interests, especially oil painting and fly fishing. As time went on, his love for sport fishing, especially with his wife, Helen, became an adventurous passion which they both enjoyed into their 80's. Harry is survived by his sister, Adelaide Gregoire, Scotch Village; son, David (Joan) Hoskin, Halifax; daughters, Diane (Charles) Ramsey, Fredericton, NB; Patty (Al Bergin) Hoskin, Lakeview; Kathy (Blair) Gough, Lower Sackville; granddaughters, Dr. Patti (Priscilla) Ramsey and their children, Hannah and Gabriel, New Maryland, NB; Dr. Suzanne (Dr. Conrad Fernandez) and their children, Nicholas and Caroline, Halifax; grandsons, Sean (Barbie MacDonald) and their daughter Elizabeth, Halifax; Dr. Aaron (Dr. Alicia Kam) Hoskin, New Orleans, Ont; Christopher (Jill) Ramsey and their daughters, Annabel and Julia, Fredericton, NB; Matt (Jill) Patterson and their children, Emily and Matthew, Lakeview; Blake (Amy) Patterson and their sons, Lucas and Eli, Bedford; Robert (Bonnie) Gough, Bedford; Michael (Tara) Gough, Red Deer, Alta; stepgrandson, Trevor (Dawn) Close and their children Kyle, Kaitlyn and Emily, Mount Uniacke; stepgranddaughter, Melanie Close and by his nieces and nephews. He felt very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to meet Anne and her parents and her sons, Alexander and Steven. Harry was married to Helen Ada Dooks for 60 years before she passed away in 2003. He was also predeceased by his sister, Helen Rose and stepgrandson, Robert Close. Harry was a hero to many and a role model to all for his integrity, kindness, compassion and love of life. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and friends. March 18, 2008

McALPIN, Leota (Lee) (nee Phillips) Passed away on March 15, 2008 in Calgary. Lee died surrounded by family after a period of ongoing declining health. She was born on June 28, 1924 in Olds, Alberta and had two sisters and three brothers. Lee moved to Calgary from the family farm at the age of fifteen to attend Western Canada High School and went on to train as a registered nurse at the Holy Cross Hospital, graduating in 1946. She married Alexander D. McAlpin in June of the following year and together they worked and raised their family in Calgary. Lee continued spending a lot of time with her immediate and extended family after Alex's death in 1983. She was also excited to welcome her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and enjoyed her time with all of them. Lee was always active and involved with the community. An avid hiker, she loved the Rockies and particularly enjoyed spending time at Lake O'Hara. She was fond of taking photographs and her subjects included the mountains, family, mushrooms, flowers and her many travels. Lee also liked to write and recorded many of her childhood and life experiences in a distinctive and humorous way. Through the years she got involved in numerous clubs and organizations and made and maintained many close friendships as a result. Lee will be fondly remembered and missed because she touched so many people with her loving spirit and quiet strength. YANCIE, Elizabeth (Betty) (nee Szaniszlo) It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear Elizabeth Yancie on Monday, March 17, 2008. Elizabeth was born January 30, 1928 in Abauj Megye, Hungary to parents Steve and Julia Szaniszlo. The family moved to Canada when Elizabeth was eight years old. Her parents farmed near Bow Island, Alberta where Elizabeth spent her youth. She met and married Rudolph Yancie in 1947 and farmed west of Foremost until they retired to Lethbridge in 1983. She will be lovingly remembered by her family of seven children, Margaret, David (Jeannie), Rudy, Bruce, Donna (Vern Schneider), Bet LeBlanc, Randy (Janice); ten grandchildren Troy (Linde), Darcy (Cindy), Tanya, Cassie, Katrina, Sarah, Laura, Randy, Carmen and David; and five great-grandchildren Rayna, Cameron, Corryn, Jayden and Presley; one sister Julia Bruins-Jacober of Medicine Hat, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Rudy, sister Margaret, brother Steve, four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law. Elizabeth moved to Calgary in 1994 where she spent eleven years volunteering at the Kerby Senior Centre. She had a warm and gracious heart, and at a moment's notice, would help anyone. She was known for her wonderful sense of humor, and love of music and dance. She was loved by many. You are our precious angel mother and we will carry you in our hearts forever. COX, Emma Elizabeth (nee Clarke) Passed away peacefully in her 74th year on Monday, March 17, 2008 after a valiant battle with cancer at the Agape Manor Hospice in Calgary. Emma was the much loved wife of the late William J. (Bill) Cox, who passed away in October 2002. She is survived and will be forever loved by her son R. Glen Cox and his wife Anne of Belgium and her daughter Linda Wellman and her husband Peter of Calgary. Emma will be dearly missed and forever remembered by her five grandchildren Lisa Kaiser (Jarvis), Jamie and Jason Wellman of Alberta and Daniel and Adam Cox and their mother Carol of Ontario. She will be lovingly remembered by her brother William (Bill) Clarke and his wife Gerdie of Gander, Newfoundland and her sister Ina Adams and her husband Doug of Ottawa, Ontario. She was predeceased by her siblings Clara Snook, Isolla Clarke, Walter Clarke and Doreen Johnson. Emma will be remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews throughout the country. Emma was born on September 12, 1934 in Crocker's Cove, Newfoundland to the late William (Will) and Elizabeth Clarke (nee Harvey). As a young couple with two small children Emma and Bill left Newfoundland in 1960 to begin a prosperous yet hard-working life in Rexdale, Ontario. Emma and Bill enjoyed life on Stony Lake during their retirement. After forty-one years in the Toronto area, they moved to Alberta in 2001 to be closer to their daughter and her family. Emma will always be remembered for her tenacity and her good humour which never wavered even through all her difficulties towards the end of her life. She was fiercely devoted to and proud of her family and will be remembered lovingly by all who knew her from Eastern to Western Canada. Emma's family expresses their gratitude to all those who cared for Emma during her illness especially all the devoted nurses in Unit 47 at the Foothills Hospital and Dr. Allison Murray. Emma spent her final days at the Agape Manor Hospice where she received tender loving care, the family is grateful for all the compassion given to Emma and to the family. Thank you to Dr. Bruce Hoffman and his staff for the love and care given to Emma from October 2007 to mid February 2008. The family will be forever grateful for all your support. A special thank you to all her "Condo Buddies" and all the friends who visited Emma during her stay in the Foothills and at Agape. CORBETT, Nora Janet (nee McPhail) On March 15, 2008, Nora Corbett died peacefully at the age of 89. Nora was a fiercely competitive golfer, a skier and a compulsive walker. She was famous for her arrangements of poppies, Saskatoon pies, hand-built pottery and dry wit. Nora was born in North Battleford, SK on June 19, 1918. The daughter of a CNR railway engineer, she grew up in Calgary and attended the University of Alberta (B.A. 1942), where she was president of the Delta Gamma sorority and Vice President of the Students Union. She worked as a librarian before marrying John Corbett in Quebec City in 1943. Nora and John raised their family in the lively Windsor Park home they built and lived in for fifty-five years. She was loved in her neighbourhood, welcoming newcomers with food and flowers, and raising money as a farewell gift to a long-serving letter-carrier. She would sometimes leave a large zucchini on a neighbour's doorstep "like an abandoned baby." Nora was active in the Edmonton arts communities and enthusiastically supported other artists. She is survived by her husband John; daughters Mary (Graeme Dales), Calgary, Norma (Scot Jamieson), Halifax, and Helen, Calgary; son Bill, Calgary; and grandsons Cameron and Nathan Dales. She is also survived by her sister Betty Milner of Calgary, as well as a close extended family. The family would particularly like to thank devoted nieces Margaret Milner and Nancy Nimmon of Edmonton. Nora was predeceased by her parents Jennie and Alexander McPhail, brothers George and John, and sisters Frances Cadham, Marie McPhail and Helen McNichol. The family is deeply grateful to the staff and residents of Canterbury Manor for helping make Nora's final years enjoyable and comfortable, as well as to the wonderful staff at the Misericordia Hospital, who cared for her so well these past few months.
