BATORSKI, Krystyna - Passed away peacefully on March 15, 2008 surrounded by her family at home in her 88th year. Beloved mother of Terri and Andrew Jaroszonek, dearly loved Babcia of Monika Jaroszonek and Dorothy and Jeff McIntyre. Predeceased by her husband Roman (1975), brother Marian Hajt and sister Halina Debska. Krystyna was a survivor of the Warsaw Uprising and a German labour camp, arriving in Canada with her husband in 1948. Active member of St. Mary's Parish and, until recently, with the Polish Scouting Association. Family will receive friends at the PATRICK J. ZIMMER, Jean - of Tobermory suddenly at the Peninsula Family Health Team facility in Tobermory on Friday, March 14th, 2008. The former Lillian Jean Russell in her 89th year. Devoted wife of the late John Peter Zimmer (1998). Lovingly remembered by her brother-in-law Ted Elliott; sister-in-law Pauline (Mrs. Harold Fidler); nieces; nephews; and many friends. Predeceased by her parents Bert and Mary Anne Russell; her brother Walter; and her sister Helen Elliott. Jean worked as a Registered Nurse for over 32 years; and was the pipe organist at the Settlement Church and Tobermory United Church from 1975 until 2004. STOKES, Leslie (Les) C. 2008-03-17 Leslie (Les) C. Stokes 80, of Riverview, NB with his loving family at his side, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday March 16, 2008 following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Moncton, he was the son of the late Chesley and Annie (Crandall) Stokes. Les was retired from Air Canada (1990) with 43 years service and attended St. Paul‘s United Church, Riverview and Mountain View United Church, Moncton. Leslie will be sadly missed by his wife, Ruby Tower; sons, Shawn (Carol); Thayne (Diana); Troy (Carolee) all of Riverview; grandchildren, Scott, Kendra, Ryan, Tyler, Meghan, Dylan, all of Riverview; sisters in law, Elva Whitney, Thunder Bay, ON; Mona Miller (Darrell), Moncton; brothers in law, Gordon Hare (Mae), Whitneyville; Herbert Dixson, Moncton; Gordon Hume, Winnipeg; several nieces and nephews. MATCHETT, Brian Jeffrey 2008-03-17 Brian Jeffrey Matchett, son of the late Bob and Nell Matchett of Nipigon, passed away in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, March 15, 2008 surrounded by loving family and support workers from the Hodder Avenue Group Home, where he has resided for the last several years. Right to the end, Jeff charmed everyone he met with his sparkly eyes, outgoing personality and his keen sense of humour. His death leaves a huge hole in many hearts. Jeff’s quality of life over the last years would not have been possible without the love and support of the clients and staff at his Hodder Avenue Group Home. Jeff was predeceased by his parents, grandparents, many aunts and uncles and brother-in-law Bob Wynn. He is survived and will be greatly missed by sisters Peggy (Tom) Varga, Sharon Wynn, Janna (Bob) Stewart and brother Bob (Isobel) Matchett as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Brian Jeffrey Matchett will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home. BODNAR, Deane 2008-03-17 The family is sad to announce the sudden death of Deane Bodnar. A resident of Atikokan, Deane passed away peacefully in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on March 12th, 2008. She is survived by brothers Donald (Kay) and family, Paul (Anne) and family as well as sister -in-law Shirley Sheehan and family. She was predeceased by her brother Mickey, her father in December 1980, husband Jack in July 1996, mother in October 1997 and brother Ted in June, 2005. According to Deane‘s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Atikokan Hospital Extended Care Wing or the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #145 in Atikokan would be greatly appreciated.

SIMONS, HENRY BORDEN Henry Borden Simons of Tracy, NB passed away at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital on March 16, 2008 at the age of 68. Henry is survived by his wife, Dianne (Sullivan) Simons; two daughters, Donna Nason and Kathy Mersereau (Thomas) both of Tracy; one son, Rick Simons of Fort St. John BC; five sisters, Grace Smith, Shirley Walsh (Skip), Jean Benjamin (Glen), Mary McKay (Donnie), Ellen Gillis (Danny) all of Nova Scotia; five brothers, Jack (Sharon) of NS, Art (Norene), Edward (Hilda), Donnie, Kenny (Gayle) all of British Columbia; eight grandchildren, Gregory, Katherine, Ben, Kara, Jake, Kaylee, Michelle and Jesse; several nieces and nephews. Henry was a member of the Armed Forces in the Black Watch and RCR as a heavy and light duty mechanic. Henry was a member Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 55, Gladstone Curling Club and Black Watch Association. He is predeceased by his parents, Grace (Fountain) and Arthur Simons; and one brother, Gordon. There will be a Legion Tribute at 6:30 pm with visitations to follow at Nu-Life Pentecostal Church, Tracy, NB. on Tuesday from 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service will be from Nu-life Pentecostal Church on Wednesday, March 19 at 1 pm. with Pastor Richard McFadgen officiating. Interment in the Tracy United Baptist Cemetery at a later date. MORRISON, ELIZABETH (BARDEN), MRS. MURRAY L. (May 8, 1912 - March 15, 2008) - For seventy years, a resident on Sewell Street, Saint John, NB and since December 2004, a resident at The Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home. Elizabeth was born in London, England to William Harold and Elizabeth Ellen (Nichols) Barden. She was the youngest and last survivor of her siblings, Ellen, Florence, William, Harold and Leonard. Elizabeth is survived by her only child, widowed daughter, Patricia (Mrs. K.E.H. Smith, Bsc, Cd); three grandchildren, Kimberly (Heather) Smith, Murray (Shelley) Smith, Elizabeth (Barry) Galbraith; and five great grandchildren. Elizabeth was widowed in 1975. When Elizabeth was 16, Canada advertised in a London newspaper, a five-year plan to hire domestics for the Montreal area (guaranteed employment) including round-trip transportation. In those days large homes had many domestics, usually from the UK, and were commonly referred to as the big houses. Elizabeth received her indoctrination at Canada House, London. Before she left for the colony with her stepsister, Eve, her dad reminded her she would be on her own in a strange land and that she should neither be cheeky nor too British. In Montreal, Elizabeth worked for two big houses on Red Path Lane and Montreal is where she met Murray, her future husband. Elizabeth crossed the Atlantic three times with Cunard Lines, twice with her daughter in tow. The last trip in 1939, the ship she tried to book was full so they waited for another. Later she heard the original ship had been torpedoed and sunk. Elizabeth loved Canada and most particularly Saint John. After retiring she made almost daily trips to Saint John City Market, took excursions with her quilting buddies, Evelyn Logan and Eva Kilpatrick to Ganong Chocolates in St. Stephen and really looked forward to the twice annual trips to Nova Scotia to visit family. Several times a year, Judge Rod Logan, bravely treated the girls to a meal and a day out and he never forgot to, and delighted in ordering an ale for her. Elizabeth was often asked how she kept so fit, to which she replied that it was good food, a daily ale, a daily slice of dark chocolate, daily errands, house work and climbing the 32 steps to her flat. For many years, Elizabeth taught at Modern Success Business College on Union Street and after retirement, she became accustomed to being approached by former students who thanked her for her firmness and dedication. For over forty years, Elizabeth was a volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross, the Church of St. John & St. Stephen Auxiliary, the Animal Rescue League, St. Paul's Church Mother's Association Quilters, Saint John General Hospital, Saint John Regional Hospital, and the Saint John (1985) Canada Summer Games Society Inc. She was also involved in English instruction for immigrant ladies. Elizabeth possessed many recommendations, citations and letters-of-thanks from the City and organizations to which she had volunteered. Elizabeth Morrison is resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424), Saint John, NB, E2K 3H6, with visitation (viewing) between 12:00 and 1:00 pm on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, followed by Elizabeth's funeral, at 1:00 pm, conducted by Rev. Dr. John Crawford of St. John & St. Stephens Presbyterian Church, at Brenan's Chapel, followed by a reception then interment at Riverbank Cemetery, Norton, N.B. LORETTE, HELEN MAE - The death of Helen Mae (nee Robertson) Lorette, 77, of Sackville, occurred peacefully at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Sunday, March 16, 2008. Born in Moncton, Helen was the daughter of the late James & Mildred (McClintock) Robertson. A wonderful mother, wife, and grandmother, Helen enjoyed tending her flower beds, reading, and knitting. Helen was a member of St. Vincent's Roman Catholic Church, Sackville. She was formerly employed with Mount Allison University, retiring in 1994. Married in 1955, she is survived by her husband Eloi Lorette, Sackville; two sons, David (Janet) Saint John, NB and Jeffrey (Jennifer), Moncton; one brother, James; a sister, Betty MacLean of Amherst; and three grandchildren, Katherine, Caroline and Amy. She was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and Jack; and sisters, Freda and Raye. Helen's remains have been entrusted into the care and supervision of Jones Funeral Home (70 Bridge Street, Sackville, 364-1300). Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. DARRAH, SISTER AUDREY J. - The death of Sister Audrey J. Darrah (Sr. Jean Marie) occurred at Ruth Ross Residence on Saturday, March 15, 2008. Sister was born in Saint John, a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Margaret (Dolan) Darrah. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on February 2, 1939. A teacher by profession, Sister Darrah taught school at St. Patrick's Orphanage, St. Patrick's, Assumption, and Holy Trinity Schools in Saint John. She also taught at St. Mary's Indian School in Fredericton and at the Tobique Reserve School in Maliseet, N.B. After thirty-five years of teaching, Sister Darrah was involved in Volunteer work in Saint John and in catechetical ministry in Saint John and Berwick, N.S. Sister ministered at St. Peter's Home, an emergency shelter for children, and as a receptionist at Rocmaura Nursing Home. She was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph H., John L., and Patrick Darrah; and eight sisters, Mrs. Catherine Muckler, Miss Helen M. Darrah, Miss Dorothy T. Darrah, Miss Ada G. Darrah, Mrs. Mary Sprague, Miss Paula Darrah, Sister Florence Darrah, and Miss Jean Darrah. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31 Cliff St., with visiting on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Vigil Service will be held on Monday evening at seven o'clock. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Vincent's Chapel on Tuesday morning at ten o'clock. BUDROW, VERDELL ALLEN (1947-2008) - At the U.R.V.H. Waterville, NB, on March 16, 2008, Mr. Verdell Allen Budrow of Bath passed away at the age of 60. Born in Woodstock, NB, Verdell was the son of the late Percy & Nina (Oakes) Budrow. Verdell worked for the NB Telephone Co. for 30 years, Verdell was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, he was very active in the Bath Lions Club for 30 years, serving as club president two terms and zone chairman once, and served on several hard working committies. Verdell is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Shirley (Giberson) Budrow; his daughter, Mrs. Jill (Dennis) Brennan of Saint John, NB; his handsome grandsons, Sam and Drew Brennan; sister, Lois Budrow of Saint John, NB; brother, Orland (Edna) Budrow of Stickney; mother in law, Violet Giberson; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his parents; and half brother, Avon Oakes. Resting at Kilcollins Funeral Bath on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 2:00 pm, from Kilcollins Chapel Bath, Rev. CALVENE, Felix February 9, 1921 - March 13, 2008 Felix passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the age of 87 years. His immediate family was close by his side in the final few days of his life, when he suddenly succumbed to complications due to heart failure. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of fifty-one years, Maria, along with his two children, Lydia (Robin Koolloos), Daniel, and his granddaughter Serena. He will also be remembered by two sisters, Livia Mason (Italy), Marie (Lou Lou), brother Guido (France), along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Ampelio and Tranquillo (France). After first arriving in Canada in 1951, Felix spent a few years in Quebec working in the Forest Industry. He arrived in Calgary in 1953, and worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway from 1956 until his retirement. Felix was always quick to offer assistance to anyone who was in need of help of any kind. Those who knew him well will miss him but not forget his sense of humour, his witty charm, and love of music. He cared very deeply for his family, worked very hard his whole life, and remained active up until just before his death. SPINA, Rosa 2008-03-16 Mrs. Rosa Spina (nee Ricci), age 73 years, passed away peacefully at Thunder Bay Regional Science Center on Friday, March 14, 2008 with her family by her side. Rosa was born on December 24, 1934 in Larino, Provincia di Campobasso, Italy. She was the third born child of Giuseppe and Carmela Ricci. She married the love of her life, Raffaele Spina in 1958 and joined him in Canada in 1959. Here she became a full-time wife, mother and a permanent resident of Westfort. She loved and treasured her family immensely. She loved cooking, baking, gardening, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and embroidering, going to church, having company over and watching her favourite Italian shows. Rosa is survived by her loving husband Raffaele Spina (of 49 years) and her beloved daughters Carmela Spina and Maria Spina. She is also survived by her sister Maria Concetta Turco (Michele), her brother Pietro Ricci (Modestina), her sisters-in-laws Antonietta Gallo (Nicola), Maria (Pardo) DiBiase (Italy), her brothers-in-laws Michele Spina (Giuseppina), Pietro Spina (Teresa), and Vittorio Spina (Italy), numerous nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews and many other relatives in Canada, Italy and the USA. She was predeceased by her parents Giuseppe and Carmela Ricci, sister Rosa Ricci (in infancy), brother Francesco Ricci and her in-laws Rosa and Giuseppe Spina. SAWULA, Anna 2008-03-16 Anna was called to the Lord, passing away peacefully with her family by her side at Hogarth Riverview Manor in her 88th year, after a lengthy illness. Born in Orzechowzi, Ukraine, Anna came to Canada in 1949. Anna devoted her entire life to the loving care of her husband and family. She was blessed with many gifts, including a beautiful voice. She sang for many years in the Prosvita Choir, and in the choir for the Church of the Holy Protection. She also served as treasurer for the Ladies Ukrainian Catholic Church League for several years. Her flower and vegetable gardens were among her favorite pastimes and she was a very talented seamstress." Anna loved to cook for her family and friends. She spent much of her time helping in the church hall preparing food, especially perohy for church fundraising. Anna was predeceased by her loving husband Maxym (Bill) on March 15, 1986; her parents Anatoli and Antonina Baluch in the Ukraine; and brothers Julian, Adam, Myron and Petro all in the Ukraine. She was a devoted mother and will be dearly missed by her surviving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughter Irene Nordlander; granddaughter Rhonda ( Rich Nalli); great-grandchildren Jake and Joey Nalli; granddaughter Nicole ( Ted Winiarz); great-grandchildren T-J and Ashley Winiarz; granddaughter Robin Nordlander; son Steven (Eva); grandson Kristopher (Sheridan); great-grandchildren Jamie and Emma; grandson Kurtis (Michelle Langlois); son Taras (Silva); grandchildren Erica, Carleigh and Evan; son Don (Debbie); granddaughters Kayla and Meghan. RAK 2008-03-16 It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts we announce the unexpected passing of Sophie Rak at T.B.R.H.S. Centre on March 13, 2008 at the age of 90 years. She was born on October 29, 1917 in Kenora, Ontario. She was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. She enjoyed her family, especially teaching the grandchildren perogy and cabbage roll skills. She took pride in her huge vegetable garden, preserving them for winter. Her flowers also beautified her yard and home. For many years she was Westfort‘s seamstress making wedding, party and graduation dresses for happy customers. She was honoured to sew her granddaughter‘s wedding dress from just a catalogue picture and measurements. For many years she was very active with the Star Hall and Westfort Prosvita ladies making perogies and cabbage rolls, and cooking for banquets. In her "spare time" she enjoyed picking blueberries and mushrooms. Her singing and dancing always made people happy. She was an up-beat senior lady who led a very active life and had many friends. Bingo was a favourite passtime for her and her daughter Addie. Sophie will be sadly missed, and lovingly remembered by her loving daughter Addie Woodbeck, son-in-law Jack and their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, son Ed Stroszyn and children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband Tony Stroszyn in 1963, son Wally Stroszyn in 1967, second husband George Varga in 1970, third husband Mike Rak in 1986. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 1:00 pm at the Church of Ascension, on the corner of Gore & Mountdale. Donations to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre or the St. Joseph‘s Care Group would be gratefully accepted. We love you mom. You will always be in the hearts of your family and friends.

QUINN, Lionel Arthur July 22, 1932 - March 9, 2008 Lionel Arthur Quinn of Calgary passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at the age of 75 years. Lionel was born in Montreal, QC on July 22, 1932. He attended McGill University and graduated as an electrical engineer. Lionel played football for McGill University and went on to play for the Montreal Alouettes and the Edmonton Eskimos. Lionel had a great sense of humour and enjoyed playing squash and badminton at the Glencoe Club. He successfully operated L.A. Quinn & Associates for numerous years. Lionel is survived by his son Philip of England; his niece Vivian Demianiw; his nephew Douglas Demianiw, both of Texas, USA; and his good friend Joan Taylor of Calgary. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Hubert; and his sister Gwyneth. ROSTETTER, Iola Caroline (nee Clark) Iola passed away at the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre in Ottawa on Monday, March, 10, 2008, at 95 years of age. This gregarious lady lived a life rooted in deep faith, music, friends and family, and she relished her role as family elder until silenced by a stroke several years ago. Iola was predeceased by her beloved husband, Corporal Allan Rostetter. The daughter of the late Caroline Cutts and the late Harold G. Clark of Rideau Park/Leitrim, Iola survived all of her siblings: James Irvine (the late Joy), Gwen Tucker (the late Reginald), and Harold (Lois), Fred (Evelyn), Arthur (Thelma), Douglas (Beverley) and Ronald (Bev) Clark. Iola will be remembered by her sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, on Wednesday, March 19, from 11:00 a.m. until service time in the chapel at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place in St. George's Hawthorne Cemetery, Ramsayville, in the spring. HUNTER, Flora Stewart (nee Neil) November 26, 1907 - March 13, 2008 It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Flora Stewart Hunter on March 13, 2008. Flora was born November 26, 1907 in Lethbridge, AB, to parents Catherine and James Neil. James came to Canada in 1901 from The Little Cumbrae, Scotland to establish a sheep ranch, and Catherine followed a few years later, once a house was built. They were married in Medicine Hat in 1905. The ranch that Flora grew up on was situated south of Burdett, Alberta. Flora and her sisters Jenny and Jean, along with her brother John, attended the Brownlee School to which they travelled on horseback. Upon graduation Flora came to Calgary and went to Normal School, then returned to the Burdett area to teach. Harry Hunter, a young geology student working in the area saw Flora in the distance riding to her teaching job one day. Later he was introduced to Flora and they eventually married in Calgary in 1931. A few years later, their first child (Jean) was born. Harry enlisted in the army as an engineer and missed the birth of their second daughter (Catherine). Harry spent five years in Europe while Flora kept the home fires burning and raised the children on her own. After the war, Harry returned and resumed his job at the Gas Company until he retired in 1967. During this time Flora was active with the Red Cross, Scarboro United Church and P.E.G.G. Wives Club. Flora and Harry enjoyed traveling and made several trips abroad in retirement. Harry died in 1993 and Flora eventually moved to Wentworth Manor where she lived until her death at the age of 100. Flora is survived by her daughter Jean Bolger of Calgary; daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Gord Thorkelsson of Edmonton; seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. SISCO 2008-03-16 Mr. George Stephen Sisco a resident of Pioneer Ridge passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008 at his residence with his family by his side. Born December 4, 1922 in Port Arthur, George was lifelong resident of the city. George volunteered to serve in WWII as a member of the #10 District Royal Canadian Army, serving in Britain, France and Germany. Following the war George was employed as a Millright with Saskatchewan Wheat Pool for over 40 years retiring as Assistant Chief Millright. He was a member of St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, The Holy Name Society, Royal Canadian Legion and the Moose Lodge. George enjoyed travelling, bowling, golfing, curling and cribbage, but mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family. George is survived by his loving wife Mary with whom he shared 57 years of marriage, son Gordon, brother Len (Luciene), sisters and brothers-in-law: Theresa, Anne, Frank (Deloris) Bill (Fleurette), Jim, Julia (Gene), Emma (Allan), and Peter (Maureen). Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. Predeceased by his mother Caroline, father Gus, sister Doris(Harry Dido), brothers Joe and Don, son Richard in infancy, sister-in-law Assunta and her husband Joe Sarlo, brother-in-law Clay Ward, brother-in-law Mike Bruni, and sister-in-law Lucille Bruni. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 leaving the Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 N.Court Street at 9:00 a.m to St. Anthony’s R.C. Church for Funeral Mass at 9:30 am, celebrated by Rev. Lino Santi c.s. A private interment will be held in St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
