POFFENROTH, Hazel Hazel Poffenroth (nee Befus), beloved wife of Bryan, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2008 at the age of 69. Besides her husband Bryan, Hazel is survived by her children, Cindy (David), Tamy (Gordon) and Troy (Corinne); grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason), Lindsay (Don), Amy, Tyler, Chris; and great-grandchild Kelsey. She is also survived by three sisters and four brothers. At Hazel's request, a private Service was held March 14, 2008 at Centre Street Church officiated by Rev. Dr. Miriam Mollering. CHAMBERLAND, Emeria P. - In loving memory of Emeria P. Chamberland (nee Jacques), 78 years, who passed away Monday morning, March 10th, 2008 at the Extendicare York, Sudbury. Loving wife of Maurice Chamberland predeceased 1994. Beloved mother of Roger (wife Suzanne) of Coniston, Gilles predeceased 1996, Francoise (husband Guy Lafrance), and Richard both of Sudbury, Robert predeceased 2004, Carole (husband Jeff McColeman) of Hanmer and Diane (husband Steve Laurin) of Val Caron. Will be sadly missed by her grandchildren; Eric, Michel, Angele, Sylvie, Kim, Jennifer, Joel and by her great grandchildren; Hailey, Braedan, Lindsey, Ethan, Cameron, Zachary, Samuel and Zoe. Emeria was born and raised in Ste-Germaine-de-Dorchester, Quebec, where she married Maurice Chamberland in 1949. Together they made their way to Sudbury to work and raise their family. A resident of King St. for many years, she was a member of St. Jean-de- Brebeuf Church. Emeria devoted herself to her family. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. BALLANTYNE, Lucille (February 20, 1920 - March 8, 2008) - In loving memory of Lucille Ballantyne, Aunt Lou, 88 years, who passed away peacefully at Extendicare, Falconridge, Sudbury, Ontario, on Saturday, March 8, 2008. Lou was born in Victoria Mine Ontario, daughter of Isabella and David Ballantyne. Sister of Violet (James), Thomas (Helen), Daisy (Clyde), George (Priscilla), Roger (Helen), William all predeceased. Sadly missed by her youngest sister Mary Lapierre and many nieces and nephews. Lou worked at S.S. Kresge's for 42 years before retiring in 1985; a dedicated employee. In her younger years she was an avid baseball player, skier and curler. Coming from a musical family, Lou loved to sing and she played the violin. All who knew her enjoyed her quick wit and sense of humour. At times, she was known as Henrietta - a favourite nickname. She enjoyed many happy years with friends and relatives at the camp on McCharles Lake. Many thanks to the 2nd floor staff at Extendicare Falconbridge for the great care & kindness. KLOEPFER, Clarence Victor A Generous Man of Achievement Victor Kloepfer, loved and respected by a close family and many friends, died peacefully on the morning of March 11, 2008 at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. Vic was a generous man who loved life and left a legacy of service and accomplishments that has enriched the lives of many people. Born in Calgary on May 24, 1933, Victor was the third of four children born to Arthur and Philomena Kloepfer. As the name Clarence was too difficult to pronounce by his siblings, the family switched to the second name of Victor in honour of the Queen with whom he shared his birth date. Arthur worked as a manager for United Grain Growers and Philomena as nurse and President of the Canadian Cancer Society. Victor's industrious and service-oriented life began as a young boy working jobs as a newspaper and grocery delivery boy, and serving as an altar boy and Eagle Scout. Vic was an exceptional student who graduated from St. Mary's High School prior to receiving a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. After earning his Petroleum Engineering degree in 1954, he returned to the burgeoning Alberta oil industry. Working in the offices of Husky Oil, Vic happened upon the secretarial pool where he met and fell in love with Olive Sultan. Courtship ensued, and the baby carriage followed their marriage in the spring of 1957, with the births of Susan, Jay and Tony. A keen intellect and strong work ethic soon earned Victor the position of Chief Engineer at Banff Oil at the ripe age of thirty-two, moving up to the Manager of Engineering when the company was purchased by Aquitane Company of Canada. He then co-founded the preeminent petroleum consulting firm of Kloepfer & Associates (now GLJ Petroleum Consultants) at the age of thirty-nine. Vic was recognized for his achievements by his peers in 1981 with the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy's Gold Medal Award of Distinction for outstanding contribution to the oil and gas industry of Canada. Within ten years, Victor retired from the consulting firm, which had reached a staff of sixty, and focused his business acumen on his holding company Permez Ltd. while serving on numerous corporate boards. While he relished his business accomplishments, Vic's real pleasures came from time spent with his family and friends, all of whom will miss his casual demeanor, sense of humour, optimism, modesty and confident pronouncements. Many benefited from his sincere interest in the well being of others. Humble and private about his charitable contributions, it was important to Victor that he give generously, both of his time and his money, and he served on the boards of a number of social service organizations. Vic's achievements were never in a quest for acquisition, but as a means of creating and enriching personal relationships. Vic was a role model to his family as husband and father, as a mentor to business colleagues and as a supportive friend. Victor loved outdoor recreation with friends and family including hiking, skiing, camping, cycling and sailing. He also had a soft spot for the myriad pets that were an integral part of the family over the years. Despite a distinct and admitted lack of aptitude for foreign languages, Vic was a world traveler, starting with international business trips, followed by numerous explorations with family and friends, spanning all five continents. Hawaii was a special recharging spot for Olive and Vic. Serious vacationing took place at their holiday homes in Whitefish, Montana and Sidney, B.C., the sites of many gatherings of family and friends. Vic's grandchildren hold special memories of holidays with Grandad, who always took a keen interest in each of their development and achievements. Looking for the warmest climate within Canadian borders, Olive and Victor relocated from Calgary to West Vancouver in 1991. Upon arrival, the Rotary Club of Vancouver played an important role in their social and service life. Vic was honored for his contributions to the Rotary Club with a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2004. Olive and Vic celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary this last April 27, 2007 with a most memorable trip to Hawaii with their family. During his final days, Vic marveled at the full and enjoyable life he had led, and how very fortunate he was to have been surrounded by family and friends throughout his journey. Victor is survived by his wife Olive Mary, daughter Susan, sons Jay and Tony - and their three spouses, sister Anna Mae, brothers Phil and Lorne, and eight grandchildren. A special thanks is offered to all of the dear people who have visited, called and supported Vic and Olive during Vic's recent illness. LORE, Edith - January 19, 1915 - March 13, 2008 - For many years Edith was a well- known real estate broker and member of the St. Catharines Real Estate Board. Edith was born in 1915 in Toronto. She was an accomplished dancer in her youth, specializing in flamenco, which she performed in Toronto at the Royal York Hotel. After she graduated from the Sacred Heart Convent in Hong Kong, she taught English and physical education there. Edith returned to Canada and married Mark Lore (predeceased 1963). During the '40's, Edith and Mark owned the Fiesta Restaurant off Ontario Street. She was a loving and devoted mother who taught her three children the value of independent thought, altruism and personal courage. She was an active member of St. Denis Parish for many years. For the past decade Edith lived at the Oakville Seniors Residence and then the Extendicare home in Mississauga. She is predeceased by her husband, Mark Lore and survived by her loving family; Daughters Louise and Suzanne (Don West), son Christopher (Patricia Sanderson) and grandson Mark. Family will receive friends at the PATRICK J. DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL; on Monday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at ten o'clock, Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria. TAYLOR, Ronald “Ron“ - Peacefully surrounded by his family, at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Friday, March 14th, 2008 in his 76th year. Beloved husband of Doreen (nee Robinson) for 53 years. Dear father of Nancy (Lyall) Ford and Noreen (Tony) Penna. Loving grandfather of Terri, Tyler, Taylor and Tianna. WEICKER, Constant - Died peacefully on March 12th, 2008, at Barton Retirement Residence, Newmarket. Conny was born in Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, Manitoba, on March 6th, 1920, the fourth of five children. He married and raised his family in St. Catharine's, Ontario. Conny was predeceased by his loving wife Zeta, his brothers Albert and Maurice, and his sister Alice. He will be fondly remembered by his sister Marie Price (Windsor, Ontario), his three daughters Corinne (married to William Baird), Jena (Carter Thorne), and Constance (John Martin), grandchildren David, Ben, Sarah (Tim Richards), Daniel and Zechariah, and great-granddaughter Violet. OBITUARY WILLIAM (BILL) GOSSAGE, M.D. (1927 - 2008) It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bill Gossage in his eighty-first year, at the Lakeshore General Hospital on March 4, 2008 after a courageous battle. Dearly beloved husband and best friend of Lynda Fyfe. Loving father of Bill (Erika), Pete (Annmarie), Dave, Mary (Stephan), Thom (Isabelle), and Ann (Mike). As well, he will be lovingly remembered by his extended family, Pam, Randy, and Chantal, and his many grandchildren. Bill will also be dearly missed by his many friends and colleagues. Medicine and music played a major part in Bill's life. He was a very well-respected family physician on the West Island for over forty years. As well, Bill was an active member of both the Inter-Hospital Choir and the Stewart Hall Singers. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Lakeshore General Hospital for their compassion and devotion. Also, we would like to thank our many friends for their support during this difficult time. RALPH, C.M, DFC and Bar, MA, LLD, DCL, D Sc, F.A.I.C, FCAES, (November 14, 1918 to March 13, 2008) - son of the late Fred and Pearl Campbell of Foxboro, Ontario, beloved husband of Ruth, daughter of the late William and Mabel Heron of Brooklin, Ontario. Father of Hugh (Darla) Stoney Creek, Catherine (Hugh) Wakefield, PQ, Elizabeth (Don Mitchell) Brooklin, and stepfather of Patricia Peterson (Eric), of Don Mitchell, and of Carolyn Hall (Robert) Port Perry. Grandfather of Ian, Robert, Brian, Julia, Christopher, Laura, Eric, Carrie, Shelley, Rachel, and Rebecca. Great grandfather of Eliot and Victoria. Predeceased by first wife, Joy, in 1975. Ralph was born on the family farm at Foxboro in November, 1918. Upon graduation from Stirling High School in 1937 he became a full time farmer with his parents for the next five years. The family farm became noteworthy for its Holstein herd and for winning the provincial championship in oat production. Ralph became volunteer organizer for Hastings County Farm Radio Forums and aided four of them to found the Foxboro Co-operative, which still operates successfully after 67 years, and he participated in creating the first Hastings County Federation of Agriculture and its associated marketing boards. Ralph enlisted as a pilot-in-training and subsequently was awarded the D.F.C and Bar as an RAF bomber pilot after several life- threatening incidents in European skies. On return to Canada he became a student at U of T (1946-49), then Rhodes Scholar at Oxford (1949-51) and graduated with a ‘first“ from Balliol College, Oxford. He became a Lecturer in the Dept of Ag Econ at OAC, Guelph, in 1951 and Professor and the Head of Department (1952-62). The Department of Ag Econ became an integrated home of high quality members and developed a large and stimulating graduate program. He was chosen as Hon Pres by three “years“ of students and counts many members of these years to be his very closest friends. Beside exceptional friendship with members of year '57 and '59, Ralph was a “people person“ with friends in almost every county in Ontario. He became Ford Foundation adviser to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (1962-64) and acting leader of planning, backed by 15 energetic young Jordanian economists fresh out of university. Seven years ago, on returning to Jordan he found one of these “young men“ he had hired in 1963 was now the Minister of Finance, another was Minister of Transportation, another was CEO of a major exporter, another had been ambassador to Kuwait for five years, etc.etc. Ralph became Professor and Assoc Dean at U of Toronto (1964-70) and chairman of the university discipline committee moderating between uncompromising exponents of old and new views of education prevalent in the discordant years 1968-70. He then became Ford Foundation adviser to Kenya (1970-72) where he became “troubleshooter“ for a new sugar factory which brought hope and off-farm jobs to thousands of small holders of Western Province and which–wonder of wonders - opened on the very day planned. The Mumias Sugar Factory became one of his greatest achievements; it has since been expanded from the original 60,000 tons to 180,000 tons of sugar per year. Ralph returned to Canada as Principal of Scarborough College of U of T (1972-76), and spear-headed the creation of the first co-operative program of the U of T. He became President of U of Manitoba for four happy years (1976-81), during which he initiated the practice of holding convocations not only at the university but at five other cities so that non-university relatives and local friends could see their young people graduate. In 1981 he became Rockefeller Foundation adviser to Kenya and created small local teams analyzing sectors of the economy and stocked with newly graduated Kenyans. In 1984 he became Director, International Development Office of AUCC (Association of Univ and Coll of Canada) Ottawa (1984-86) largely devoted to assisting Canadian universities establish productive relations with universities of the third world. Thereafter, he was part time consultant/adviser in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and author of the book “We Flew by Moonlight“ recounting his experience as a war-time pilot ditching at night in the Channel and later being shot down on fire after bombing the Ruhr Valley. A second book, “From Foxboro, Ontario“ reviewed his long life with special attention to his early years in a farm community. He was President of the Agric Inst of Canada in 1960 and of the Can Ag Ec Society in 1959. He became a member of the Order of Canada in 1986. On June 8, 2008 he will be inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame. One of Ralph's strongest points is that he has always been a “people“ person, a quality which comes naturally to those growing up in a family like his and a community like Foxboro. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, friend, he will be sadly missed by his wife, Ruth, and many others. The funeral service will be held at Mundell Funeral Home, 79 West St., Orillia, at 1 pm on Sunday, March 30th. PAUDYN, Richard Stephan - Ryszard passed away suddenly as the result of a traffic accident in Toronto on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at the age of 86. Beloved husband of Anna, and formerly of Janina. Loving father of Barbara and her husband John, Richard and his wife Magret. Much loved grandfather of Jennifer, Michael, Krysta, Ricky, Paul, Alexandria and Katrina. Dear brother of Bozena. Ryszard and his wife Anna had spent the past 18 summers at the home of his son Richard and his family in Yarker. He and Anna were a frequent sight taking their walks along the trails and lanes of Yarker Village - a place he fondly referred to as his second home. A vastly interesting, articulate and kind man, he will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. Richard was born in Warsaw, Poland. During the Second World War, at the age of seventeen, Richard was imprisoned in the Soviet Gulag. Freed by the British, he later fought in the Second Polish Corps of the British Eighth Army as Officer of the Sixth Armoured Regiment of the Children of LWOW. He immigrated to Canada in 1948 and was employed at De Havilland and Boeing Aircraft. Ryszard Paudyn was very active in the Polish community as former manager of the “White Eagle“ soccer club, past president of the Circle of Former Soldiers of the Sixth Armoured Regiment, former director and vice-president of Branch 20 of the Polish Combatants Association, former vice president and media relations officer of the Head Executive Board of the Canadian Polish Congress, former director of the Charitable Foundation and Invalids' Fund of the Canadian Polish Congress, director of the Adam Mickiewicz Foundation. He was a frequent contributor to the Polish language press and recipient of numerous awards including the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Gold Award of the Canadian Polish Congress, Silver Cross of the Polish Combatants Association, and Ontario Achievement Award commemorating 50 years of community service. He will be sadly missed by his family in Canada and in Poland. Lillian Ruth Henson HALIFAX, NS - Lillian Ruth "Ruth" Henson 91, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 13, 2008 at home. She was the daughter of the late Hugh and Elizabeth Vernon. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Selborne and sisters Evelyn Parker and Dorothy Farley. Born in Starbuck, Manitoba, September 9, 1916. Ruth was a teacher in rural Manitoba until becoming a WREN during WW II. She met Sel, also serving with R.C.N. upon being posted to Halifax. After several moves over the years, they settled in Fairview to continue raising their family. Ruth was a long standing member of the ACW of St. John's Anglican Church, Fairview. She enjoyed membership in the WRENS Association and the Foresters Bowling League. Many volunteer hours were given to Meals on Wheels, Literacy Nova Scotia, and Abilities Foundation of Nova Scotia and as an ESL teacher. Ruth is survived by children, Marion (Ron) McKinnon, Beaver Bank, Sally (Larry) Miklos, Riverview, NB and Rodney (Carmie) Henson, Halifax; grandchildren, Gordon, Christine, Eric, Paul, Jennifer and great grand children, Damien and Nevaeh. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9pm Sunday, March 16 with a funeral service 10:00 am Monday, March 17, all at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax. Mary Christine Harrison (née Symons) December 09, 1922 - March 13, 2008 With quiet dignity, Mary Harrison passed away at the Brantford General Hospital on March 13, 2008, at the age of 85. Mary was predeceased by her loving husband Bill on March 18, 1986, infant daughter MaryAnne and her brothers Joe and Fred. Mary will be sadly missed and always remembered by her children Eileen (Ed), Linda (Ron), Jo-Ann (Mark), Mike (Leanne), Patricia (Rob), and Kathleen (Ollie), as well as ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, her sister Patricia in Australia, her many nieces and nephews in Hamilton, England, Australia and Wales, and especially her lifelong friends Pat and Ev and all their families. Mary was born in County Cork, Ireland on December 9, 1922 to Molly and Edwin Symons. The family later moved to London, England. During WWII, Mary served her country by making munitions. She met Bill (a Canadian Paratrooper) and came to Canada as a War Bride in 1946. She and Bill raised their family in Hamilton's Northend. Mary always provided a warm and loving home for her children, never putting her needs and wants ahead of her family. Mary will always be remembered by those that loved her for her amazing storytelling, her great sense of humour and for always making everyone feel at home. BOURASSA, Lydia It is with ultimate sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Lydia Bourassa on March 10, 2008 at the age of 65 years. She was born Lydia Crowe in Belfast, Northern Ireland on March 21, 1942. She immigrated to Canada in 1964 where she met and married Harvey Bourassa in 1966. Lydia will be greatly missed by husband Harvey; only daughter Sandra-lee; the two great loves of her life: her grandsons Jesse Bourassa, Adam Huebert; her mentor, Fay Martin and best friends Herta Stelle, Christine Comeau, and Sheila Kerr. Lydia was predeceased by her parents Robert and Margaret; sister Kathleen; niece Sally and her brother-in-law Bill. She leaves behind two brothers, Eric (Brenda) of Langley, BC and John (Marie) of Downpatrick, N. Ireland. She will be sadly missed by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada and in N. Ireland as well as her extended family in N. Ireland, whom she was reunited with after forty-three years, this past summer. She touched the lives of so many working at the Metropolitan Calgary Foundation for twenty-six years. Then volunteering at the Bowness Seniors' Centre and at the Bow Centre Place where she made many new friends. Cherished grandmother and great grandmother to many. She will be sadly missed by her siblings: Donat Morin, Alphonse Morin, Yvette Goulet and Hélène Morin. Predeceased by her husband Richard Donald (1985) her son Glen (1976), her parents Esdras and Yvonne Irvine as well as her siblings: Jean, Anne and Aline.
