MacKENZIE, William Campbell ("Bill") Died peacefully at home at the age of 95, on February 8, 2008, in the presence of his wife Nonna (nee Sarwi) and daughter Katrina (of Baddeck, NS). Also survived by his son Niall (of Vancouver), granddaughter E.J. (of Baddeck), and a devoted company of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and their families. Predeceased by parents Kathryn (nee Campbell) and Neil, brother Murray, sisters Muriel Nicholson and Hazel Johnston. An economics graduate of Dalhousie University (BA 1937, MA 1938), where he was a leader of the solidarity movement for the Spanish Loyalists, Mr. MacKenzie joined the federal Dept. of Fisheries (now Fisheries and Oceans) which he represented on the Allies' Combined Food Board (1942-46) and its post-war replacement, the International Emergency Food Council (1946-47), both headquartered in Washington, DC. His later activities in the Department included a secondment to the Newfoundland Fisheries Development Committee (1951-53), the chairmanship of the Canadian delegation to the International Commission for the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries (1963-65), and the chairmanship of the Fisheries Prices Support Board (1976-79). From 1953-70 he was the Department's director of economic research and from 1971-80 he held the top advisory position to the Minister of the day. Modesty prevented him from belabouring what many colleagues aver: that Canada's fisheries would be in better shape today if governments had actually followed their senior policy advisor's advice. During his time at Fisheries and Oceans, and after retiring, Mr. MacKenzie was a sought-after consultant for various federal Task Forces and Royal Commissions, CIDA, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, etc. He wrote or revised the entries on fisheries economics for the Grolier Encyclopedia (1956), the Encyclopedia Canadiana (1966), and the Canadian Encyclopedia (1985, 1988); and contributed specialized studies to such publications as Resources for Tomorrow (Ottawa), 1961-62 and the Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada. As the latest-surviving exponent of the Gaelic traditions of the South Haven/Big Hill area of Cape Breton Island, he also contributed essays to the Aberdeen University journal Scottish Gaelic Studies, and belonged to several learned societies including the Folklore of Ireland Society and the Gaelic Society of Inverness. His love of music, conviviality, and the theatre never deserted him. Nor did his intellectual acuity; he had the satisfaction of completing, before his death, the manuscript of a major book. Mr. MacKenzie's family wish to express their gratitude to the nursing staff of the Queensway Carleton Hospital; to the staffs of the CCAC and its associated agencies; to the STRIDE organization (providers of homecare equipment); and to the Palliative Care Outreach Program. There will be an ecumenical memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 17th, at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa (30 Cleary Ave.) Interment will follow in Baddeck, NS at a later date. O'CONNOR, William John May 26, 1932 - February 6, 2008 Passed away suddenly on February 6, 2008, while vacationing in Mexico with his wife, Teresa. Predeceased by parents Myrtle and Bill O'Connor and sister Margaret (Wilkinson, Tribe). Survived by his sister Nora (George Stromme) and nieces and nephews of Wainwright, Alberta. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Teresa Mangione and his children, Mary Ellen (David LeBrun) and grandchildren Madeleine, Joey and Lucie LeBrun of Kingston, ON, Anne Louise (John Ross) and twin grandchildren, Liam and Emily Ross of Vernon, BC, Laura Rose O'Connor of Edmonton, and John David O'Connor of Istanbul, Turkey. John was very fond of his in-laws, the Mangione family of Ottawa, especially his mother-in-law Lucy. John always the devoted family man and proud Canadian graduated from Alberta U. (BSC) and Western ( Dip.Bus.Admin .). Thereafter he enjoyed a distinguished 35 year career in the Federal Government culminating in the position of Executive Director of the Canadian Grain Commission. Mass of Christian Burial to be held February 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy Parish, Winnipeg. REID, James QC 1931 - 2008 James (Jim) Reid died Sunday February 10, 2008 at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta, after suffering a stroke. Jim was born Oct. 2, 1931 in Cupar, Fife, Scotland, and completed his MA at St. Andrew's University and then his law degree at Dundee University, Scotland. Jim emigrated to Canada in 1956, and completed the Law Society of Upper Canada's Bar Admission course in 1961. Jim worked in the city solicitors' department of the City of Ottawa from 1961 until 1966, when he joined the law firm of Hewitt Hewitt and Nesbitt. The firm became known as Hewitt Hewitt Nesbitt Reid in 1969 and Jim received his QC 1976. He enjoyed his litigation practice with the firm until 1995, when he retired to care for his wife Vivian. They had been married in 1958 and she had had a long career as a schoolteacher, but after her retirement she began a long gradual struggle with Alzheimer's, and she predeceased him in September 2007. Jim is survived by his brother Bob (Joan), his nephews Douglas (Sharon), Paul, and Michael (Claire) and their families; by many members of Vivian's family, with special thanks to Donna and Crystal; and by his Calgary family Marilyn, Caitlin and Jeff. BOWLES, Edward Allan. At the age of fifty-seven, passed away suddenly on December 27, 2007 in Saint Luc Hospital, Montreal. Beloved older son of Herbert Edward Bowles of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec and the late Rita Shanahan, he is survived by his sister Margaret Dickie (William) of Amissville, Virginia and brother Michael Bowles of Costa Mesa, California, by several aunts and many cousins. He was predeceased by grandparents Herbert Percival Bowles and Nancy Agnes (Middleton) Bowles as well as Joseph Shanahan and Mary (MacLaughlin) Shanahan. Cremation has taken place. LAVIOLETTE, Brenda March. (1934-2008). Brenda passed away peacefully in the early hours of February 7, 2008. Born on October 19, 1934 in Grimsby, England, loving wife to Marcel Jean Laviolette. Devoted mother to Vicki & Adele and their husbands Pierre Gosselin & Andrew Lachance. Sister of Peter March and Marilyn Wensley nee March. She will forever be remembered in the hearts of her grandchildren Tyler & Kirstin Lachance, Marc-Antoine & Erik Gosselin for they were the apple of her eye and in their words 'The best Granma Ever'. Brenda touched the lives of many with her generosity, hospitality and sharp wit. Whether it was preparing a 7-course meal at the last minute or helping out in an emergency, Brenda was always an incredibly reliable rock in the face of a crisis. She will be remembered for her candidness and her cheerfulness. A private family gathering will be held on February 23 in celebration of her beautiful life. DEAN, Bruce William DEAN, Bruce William - 73, Dean, passed away February 12, 2008, in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Dean, he was a son of the late William and Myra (Hamilton) Dean. For many years, he worked for the Department of Highways in Cranbrook, B.C., and in retirement, farmed on the family homestead in Dean. He was an avid marksman, winning many trophies in competition, as well as a devoted backpacker, fisherman, hunter and horseman. He was a member of Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean. Surviving are brother, Newton (Joyce), Cranbrook, B.C.; sister, Beulah (Arthur) Huntley, Bass River; his wife, Geneva; her children, Debbie (Gary), Trent (Lorraine), Sonya; grandchildren, Clayton, Tyler, Fred, Eva, Emily, Luke, Rosanna, Virginia; nephews, Keith, Terry; nieces, Jane, Avis. He was predeceased by brother, Wesley; sister, Viola. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday and funeral service 2 p.m. Friday, both in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean, Rev. Gary Burrill officiating. PICK, Nelson M. PICK, Nelson M. - 86, New Minas, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Wolfville, he was a son of the late Eldon and Beatrice (Harrington) Pick. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas with the West Nova Scotia Regiment and an artillery unit. Following the war, he spent his working career in farming. He was an avid walker and a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Dr. C.B. Lumsden Branch 74, Wolfville. He is survived by daughters, Joyce (Russell) Best, Truro; Carol Pick (Barry Nicks), Sheffield Mills; sons, Kenneth (Barbara), Port Williams; Ronald (Barbara), West Brooklyn; Donnie (Cheryl), St. Croix; sisters, Annie May Regular and Rosaline Trask, both of Halifax; brother, Winston, Wolfville; grandchildren, Kevin, Jeffrey, David, Cindy, Gregory, Ronnie, Robbie, Tiffany, Glen, Glenda, Kenneth, Pam, and Elliott; 20 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. ALLEN, David Gerald ALLEN, David Gerald - 46, Chebogue, passed away peacefully in Yarmouth Regional Health Centre on February 11, 2008, after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. He is survived by his mother, Jean Allen, Yarmouth, and was predeceased by his father, Henry in 2002. David leaves behind his loving sister, Paulette Babin (Richard Thibodeau), Chebogue, and brothers, Jim (Wendy), Yarmouth; Barry (Crystal), Apple River, Cumberland Co., and Brian (Eloise), Amherst. David will also be missed by Judy Allen and Earl Babin, who were part of his family. David will be sadly missed by his nieces, Erica and Jennifer, and his nephews, Jeff, James, Derek and Patrick. David cherished his friends and considered them a part of his family. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his kindness, which was at the centre of his being, and for his loving ways. He spent the first part of his adult life taking care of the mentally ill and more recently, disadvantaged youth. David was interested in photography and writing. CUTLER, William Leo "Bill" CUTLER, William Leo "Bill" - 77, Dartmouth, died February 11, 2008, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Ramea, N.L., he was a son of the late Henry and Mary (Baggs) Cutler. In his early years he was employed with Simpsons and later with D.N.D. at the Bedford Magazine from where he retired. Bill loved and enjoyed his family. He also loved woodworking and gardening. During the last number of years he was a wonderful caregiver to the love of his life, his wife of 54 years, Mary. Besides Mary, he leaves behind children, Paul (Elvis) Giles, Bernice (Michail) Oickle, Bill, Donna Casey, Kevin (Debbie), all of Dartmouth; George (Jill), Fall River, and Cathy (Todd) Caines, Dartmouth; grandchildren, to whom he was affectionately known as "Skipper", Jason (Wendy), Arrin, Andrew, Sean, Matthew, Maria, Ryan, Dakota, Stephen, Ethan, Will, and Kacey; great-grandchildren, Adrian and Annabell, and sister, Rita "Maud". He was predeceased by brother, George, and sister, Annie. HOPKINS, David Ernest HOPKINS, David Ernest - 69, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2008, in Dartmouth General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born January 31, 1939, in West Head, Cape Sable Island, he was a son of the late Cornelius and Elva (Ross) Hopkins. David was a loving husband, father and very proud and loving grandfather. During his life David was a hardworking dedicated employee. He began his working years as an aircraft mechanic with Fairey Aviation, and later became an experienced sandblaster and crane operator. He retired after 25 years of service with the Halifax County School Board. He is survived by his loving wife, Gladys (Kelly); his sons, David (Bethany), Dartmouth; Stephen (Delene), Cole Harbour; Dale, at home; special grandson, Haydn "Mighty Mite", and brother, Burtt, Ottawa. He was predeceased by his sister, Geraldine Gray. There will be no visitation by request. A Celebration of David's life will be held on February 15 at 2 p.m. in A.L. NICKERSON, Victor St. Clare NICKERSON, Victor St. Clare - 67, Welshtown, passed away at home on February 8, 2008. Born in Barrington, he was a son of the late Herman Leonard and Hilda Elizabeth (Foster) Nickerson. Vic worked in British Columbia for a while. He also worked in the woods with horses. He drove a logging truck here for many years and this is what he enjoyed doing most of all. His favourite place was Long Lake. Vic is survived by brothers, Edward (Muriel), Sable River; Maynard, Shelburne; half-brothers, Frank (Geraldine), Birchtown; Doug, Newellton; sister, Sheila (Paul) Boutilier, Shelburne; half-sister, Joan Garland, Birchtown; 14 nieces and nephews; aunt, Edith Foster, Shelburne. Born in St. Peter's, she was a daughter of the late John and Annie (McKenzie) MacEwen. She was a former member of St. Peter's Community Club, the Bonnie Brae Senior's Club, Branch 47 Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, St. Peter's United Church Women, St. Peter's Home and School, Covenant Rebekah Lodge (I.O.O.F.), St. Peter's United Church Member, and a 50 year member of the St. Peter's United Church choir. She is survived by nephews, John (Barb) MacEwen, Billy (Sharon) MacEwen, Ian (Rosette) MacEwen; nieces Kendra (Steve) Gesner, Kathy (Colin) MacDougall, Kimberly (Paul) Hiscock, Allison (Kenneth) Martell, as well as sisters-in-law, Cecilia MacEwen-Trowhill and Marcia MacEwen; many grandnieces and grandnephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Gilbert Prime; sons, Darrell, Byron; brothers, Kenneth, William (Bunter), Harvey MacEwen; sister-in-law, Mary Irene (Flood) MacEwen, and sister, Georgina in infancy. She will be fondly remembered by everyone who knew her as having a lovely singing voice, kind disposition, soft-spoken manners and unending smile. She will be remembered as a gracious person whom everyone loved. Those of us that were close to her will never forget the tasty baked goods that she used to make for us. TOBIN, Douglas John TOBIN, Douglas John - Left us February 11, 2008, at the age of 64, after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. He was the only child of the late John and Irene (Kelly) Tobin. He was employed as a bus operator with Metro Transit for the last 25 years. Doug will be sadly missed by his wife of 35 years, Bettie (Keeping); his daughter and number one fan, Kelly (Perry) Boudreau, daughter, Tamara (Peter) Zarelli, Montreal; also his beloved granddaughter, Kayla and his grandson, Gavin, both of Halifax. Doug will be missed by his cat, Louie. Special thanks to Kelly for the help and extra caregiving when Mom needed her the most. Also to Perry, who was there as Bettie's second set of hands and never far away when physical challenges were presented. Bettie would like to especially thank palliative care nurse, Glenna, Dr. Morzycki and nurse Veronica Tanner, and our angel, Mary Lou, and Bettie's sister, Audrey. Also, thank you to everyone who helped make Doug's last days more comfortable. Arthur was born on October 17, 1926, in Bishopville, and was a son of the late James and Leora (Tracey) Vaughan. He is survived his wife of 61 years, the former Verna Tracey; son, Dale (Bonnie); daughters, Judith Vaughan, Donna (Garnet) Mason and Barbara (Bill) Mesheau; brothers, Royce (Florence), Leo (Joyce), Clyde (Mabel), and Eric (Ruth); sisters, Gwendolyn (Peter) Crane, Ella (George) Kewley, and Shirley Skipper; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Arthur was predeceased by sisters, Christine Boudreau, and Sylvia in infancy. Arthur began his working career in the Royal Reserve Army, Windsor. He then went on to work for many years at Minas Basin Pulp and Power Ltd. He was a member of the Minas Waves Seniors Group, an adherent of Hantsport Baptist Church and a member of the Country Entertainers Band. Born in Smith's Cove, he was a son of the late William H. Berry and Euta (Simmons) Berry. Arthur was a veteran of the Second World War, and served overseas in France, Holland, Germany, and Belgium with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He was employed at CFB Cornwallis for 25 years in the clothing stores division. He was a member of Smith's Cove Baptist Church where he served as treasurer for many years. He also enjoyed singing in the men's choir. Art greatly loved gardening around his home and caring for the birds that visited the outside feeders. He is survived by his wife, Frances (Weir) Berry; daughters, Brenda (John) Oikle, Stewiacke; Holly (Paul) Lewis, Dartmouth; brother, Lawrence Berry, Smiths Cove; grandchildren, Craig Oikle (Jane Kelderman), Pictou; Jeff Oikle (Kelly Emery), Stewiacke; Laura and Leslie Lewis, Dartmouth. FINDLAY, Delton Webster FINDLAY, Delton Webster - 84, Upper Musquodoboit, passed away February 13, 2008, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax, with his loving wife, Betty, at his side. Born in Sambro on March 15, 1923, he was a son of the late Joseph and Maude (Smith) Findlay. Delton served overseas with the Navy from 1940-1945. He was a fisherman before and after the war, and was a proud member of the community of Sambro. Following his years overseas he worked with National Sea Products until his retirement, more than 34 years later. Delton loved his family and was proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, the former Betty Stewart-Poteri; sons, Shane (Allison), Stuart (Michelle) Poteri; daughters, Sandra (Chris) Radford, Karen Findlay, Susan (Dwight) Lillico, Elaine (Donald) Whitenect; grandchildren, Steven, Trent, Bradley, Jason, Kayla, Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Sophia; brother, Bernard (Alice) Findlay; sister, Molly Kelly. ALAPIN-RUBILOWICZ, Dr. Stanislawa ALAPIN-RUBILOWICZ, Dr. Stanislawa - Halifax. The life of Stanislawa Alapin-Rubilowicz ended February 13, 2008, in Melville Lodge in Halifax. Born in 1915, in Warsaw, Poland, "Slava", as she was known here, trained as a physician and married Dr. Boleslaw Alapin. After the German invasion in 1939, she, along with thousands of other Jews, was ordered into the infamous Warsaw Ghetto, where she worked in hospitals under horrendous conditions and witnessed Nazi atrocities. Escaping in its final days, Slava survived under false identity until the arrival of the Red Army, when she joined the medical unit of a Polish division under Soviet control. Reunited with her son, Peter, and sheltered in a convent, she qualified after the war as an obstetrician and gynecologist, and remarried to Dr. Mietek Rubilowicz, with whom, in 1956, she emigrated to Israel. On retirement, they joined Peter and his family in Halifax. Slava took a degree in Spanish at Dalhousie University and was a given a gold medal. She painted, she entertained and she collaborated on an award winning book centered on her life, "Night Voices: Heard in the Shadow of Hitler and Stalin". She was predeceased in 2001 by her husband, Dr. M. Rubilowicz. Slava is survived by her son, Peter Alapin, his wife Sophia, and by her granddaughters, Iris, Montreal, and Maya, Oxford, England. At a later date, the family plans to hold a celebration of Slava's life. Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. The family wishes to extend very special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Melville Lodge.

BENNETT, Wilfred Edward BENNETT, Wilfred Edward - 87, East Havre Boucher, Antigonish Co., passed away on February 13, 2008, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital. Born in East Havre Boucher, he was a son of the late David and Eugenie (Crispo) Bennett. Wilfred was a carpenter most of his working life. In addition to farming and fishing, he worked at Atomic Energy Limited, Gulf Oil Refinery and the Pulp Mill in Port Hawkesbury. He also worked on the construction of the Canso Causeway. He was a member of the Carpenter's Union, Local 1588, Cape Breton. Surviving are his wife, Beatrice (Boucher); children, Lloyd (Mary Panek), Gerald (Nancy Johnson) and Wayne (Teresa Martinuk), all of Powell River, B.C.; Sharon (Ulrich Pinkohs), Antigonish; Charles (Rose Pelrine), East Havre Boucher; Emerson (Anita MacMillan), Antigonish; Joan (Ron Bayne), Antigonish; Heather (Tony Broussard), Milton, Ont.; Anthony (Kelly DeYoung), East Havre Boucher; Craig (Cindy MacIsaac), Antigonish; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Vincent (Ellie), California, and sister-in-law, Mary Bennett, Antigonish. He was predeceased by sister, Hilda Tirico; brothers, Xavier and Bernard. HANSFORD, Rena C. HANSFORD, Rena C. - Pictou. It is with great sadness the family of Rena C. (Ferguson) Hansford announce her passing, at home, on February 13, 2008. She was a daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (MacCallum) Ferguson. Born on Pictou Island, February 11, 1924, she moved to Pictou at age 18. She worked with the war effort and local bakeries. She is survived by all her children, Freda (Clarence) Piercy, Brussels, Ont.; Melville (Marilyn), Guelph, Ont.; Cindy, at home; Bonnie, Pictou; Randy (Wendy), Lake Echo, as well as her brother, Lowell (Jean) Ferguson, Three Brooks, and sister-in-law, Elsie Ferguson, New Brunswick. She had 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren, whom she adored. Rena was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Melville, along with her brothers, Louis, Ken, Arthur, and Vernon, and her sisters, Thelma, Janie, Marjorie, and Almida. Her family will always have cherished memories of her jokes, laughter, storytelling, love of cards, and her knitting. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in St. James Anglican Church, Pictou, with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Burial will be in Seaview Cemetery. Family flowers only please. PETRIE, Paul Alexander PETRIE, Paul Alexander - 63, Halifax, passed away suddenly in QEII Health Sciences Centre on February 13, 2008. He was born in New Waterford and was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Patricia (Prendergast) Petrie. Paul attended Mount Carmel School, New Waterford, and later attended St. F.X. University. At the time of his passing, he was employed by the Commissionaires of Nova Scotia. He will be sadly missed by his brothers, Ray (Irene), Remington, Ind.; Art (Annette), Dartmouth; David (Donna), New Waterford. He will also be missed by his nephews and nieces, Moria, Stephen, Aaron, Laura, Douglas, and Curtis, and also by grandnephew, Owen, and grandniece, Elly. The family is grateful to Father Phil Thibodeau, Buffy, and the staff at QEII for all they did for Paul in his last days. PUTNAM, Kenneth Graeme PUTNAM, Kenneth Graeme - 76, Dartmouth, passed away in Dartmouth General Hospital on February 13, 2008. Born in Lower Onslow, he was a son of Lewis and Mary Putnam. Ken was a graduate of Mount Allison University and Nova Scotia Tech. He joined British American Oil as a professional engineer in 1958, retiring from Petro Canada Ltd. in 1988. He remained active in his field for a number of years as a consultant. Ken loved to sail and spend quality time with his little friend Winston. Ken was a kind and perfect gentleman, a loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather. He is survived by wife, Shelia (Lake) Putnam; sons, Robert (Priscilla) Putnam, Cole Harbour; David (Connie) Putnam, Hammonds Plains; Kevin (Yuen) Putnam, Toronto, Ont.; brothers, Doug Putnam, Dartmouth; Al (Joan) Putnam, Truro; grandchildren, Kevin, Matthew, Daniel and Evie; several nieces and nephews. Born in Gormanville, he was a son of the late Creighton and Abbie (McCulloch) White. Blair worked in the woods, cutting logs for Walter Wright and other companies. He also worked for Latimer's Construction in Truro for a number of years. He was an owner and operator of a trucking and backhoe business. Then he worked for the Department of Highways until retirement. He is survived by his wife, Hilda; sons, Kevin (Wenda), South Maitland; David (Pamela), Gormanville; Todd (Ethel), Devon, Alta.; daughter-in-law, Faye White; sisters, Nora Cameron, White Settlement; Myrtle Lynch, Windsor; Evelyn (Fred) Uhlman, Mooseland; grandchildren, Jeremy (Amanda), Dwayne (Angie), Tracy (Paul), Becky (Peter), Stephanie, Odessa; stepgrandson, Michael; great-grandchildren, Timothy and Jenna; several nieces and nephews. Del was a graduate of Dalhousie and St. F.X. University. She worked as an office manager for the Board of Trade in Sydney for many years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. BLEAU (née Harris), Liliane 1934 - 2008 Lili nous a quittés le 8 février, à l'âge de 73 ans. Elle est partie tout en douceur, après une longue bataille qu'elle a menée avec ténacité.
