ESKRITT, Leslie Joseph - Joe Eskritt passed away at his home on the morning of February 7, 2008. Beloved husband of Diana Eskritt who predeceased him in September. Devoted father of Jodi Ann and Ian Joseph (Jeremy Lin Evans-Eskritt) and proud grandfather of Keagan Leslie and Loghan Dawn. Brother of Jeanette (George Poag), Nita (Jack Vicary) and Susan (Peter Tanner). The family wishes to thank everyone for their continued support through Dad's illness. Fontaine, domicilié à Grande-Digue. Né à MacDougall Settlement le 17 décembre 1937, il était fils de feu Georges Fontaine et de feu Argentina Blanchard. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse dévouée, Claudette (Leger); son fils, Dr Daniel (Dre Cynthia Hickey) de Terre-Neuve; ses petits-enfants: Grace Lynne et Jack; son frère: Roger Fontaine (Simone), de Sudbury, Ont., ses soeurs: Yolande Léger (Valmond) de Saint-Antoine, Bernice Poirier (feu Léo) de Shediac Bridge, Venolia Léger (feu Joseph) de Moncton et Patricia Vallant (feu Ron) de Calgary. Une fille, Lynne (1993), l’a précédé dans la tombe. M. Fontaine était un professeur reconnu et respecté et un comptable dans sa région, qui aimait passer du temps avec ses amis et sa famille. Après, près d’un demi-siècle d’enseignement au Oulton’s Business College, il a été bénévole au St. Pats Family Center, au Club Lion et au Karing Kitchen de Moncton, et pour le Seuil de l’Espoir de Grande-Digue. Il sera grandement regretté par plusieurs durant la saison de l’impôt. Il avait une mémoire des événements et des détails qui impressionnait les privilégiés témoins de son don. Il sera grandement regretté, mais jamais oublié par tous ceux et celles qui le connaissaient si bien. He will be certainly missed by many as the taxation season is fast approaching. His memory for events and details would impress all that were privileged to witness this phenomenal gift. LACELLE, Hubert - The family announces with sorrow, his death in Sudbury, Sunday, February 10th, 2008 at the age of 81 years. Son of the late Hector and of the late Aurore (née Lahaie) Lacelle. Beloved husband of 58 years to Florianne (née Bergeron) of Sudbury. Loving father of Roger Lacelle (Gail) of Elliot Lake, Laurent Lacelle (Jocelyne) of Sudbury and Francine MacMillan (George) of Garson. Dear brother of Roland Lacelle (late Gertrude) of Ottawa and Yvette Grottoli (Alfio) of Sudbury. Sadly missed by his grandchildren Marc, Keith (Melanie), Daniel (Anna), Denis (Sophie) his step-grandchildren Shannan, Jillian and his great-grandchildren Emma, Zachary, Haley and Darren. Derek was born and grew up in Georgetown, Guyana. He lived in Canada for the last thirty years. Derek loved life and had a passion for people. BYERS, Leonard (Len) Leroy May 5, 1927 - February 8, 2008 Leonard (Len) Leroy Byers of High River, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2008 at the age of 80. Len was born in Welwyn, Saskatchewan, and moved to Calgary in 1948. He worked in construction and became a fine carpenter. He met his wife Dorothy and they were married in 1950. Len worked for Poole Construction and then the Provincial Government at SAIT until his retirement in 1982. He also worked many years part-time at Heritage Park in Calgary. Upon his retirement they moved to Hedley, BC for a few years, back to Calgary, and had been in High River since June, 1994. Len leaves to mourn his partner Joan Larson; sons, Tom (Joanne) of Calgary, Rick (Mary Lynne) of High River, daughter Tish of Calgary; seven grandchildren, Sarah (Warren), Nick, Lisa, Amanda (Nick), Jesse (Laura), Matthew, Joel; and five great-grandchildren, Faith, Jacob, Nicholas, Asher, and Cole. Len is also survived by sisters, Ruby McGibney and Stella Tapp; sister-in-law, Barb Brown; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and a long list of good friends. PICHETTE, Ernest George March 17, 1923 - February 8, 2008 Ernest passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at his home on Friday, February 8, 2008 in the arms of our Lord. Ernest is survived by his children Dian (Ted) Okkerse, Bonita Pichette, Gerard (Kris) Pichette, and David (Brenda) Pichette, and his brothers, Andre (Yvonne) and Germain (Pauline), his special friends, Satira, Betty D. and Jack E. and many more very dear friends. Born in Portuguese Cove, Halifax Co., he was a son of the late William and Catherine (Purcell) Boyce. He moved to Westville as a young boy. He was a steel worker and pipe fitter by trade working at the Pictou Shipyards for many years until retirement. Raymond's greatest enjoyment was the love and entertainment he received from his children and grand children. He will be sadly missed by daughters, Ruth Weston (Harold); Annette Patton (Albert); niece, Frances MacPherson, all of Westville; grandniece, Mary Osmond, Union Centre; grandchildren, Katelyn and Emily Weston; Ashley Patton and Justin Osmond. He is also survived by sister Mary Boudreau, Westville, and by his sister-in-law, Muriel Boyce, Westville and several nieces and nephews. Born in Granton, Pictou Co., she was the daughter of the late Alex and Catherine (Lamey) Walker. Mrs. Fowlie was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Kentville, where she devoted much of her time to volunteering for the Christian Concern Committee for 35 years, teaching Sunday school, the Valley Cursillo Movement and was a lifetime member of the Catholic Women's League (C.W.L.). She will be forever loved and greatly missed by her many family and friends. She is survived by son Ray, Kentville; daughter, Jamie Fowlie (Rick); brother, Joe Walker, Truro; grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah, Erin, and Evan, great-grandson, Cameron Eric and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Gerry was predeceased by her husband, Eric Fowlie; brother, Ted Walker; sisters, Mary Jane Shaw and Sadie Angus. VISKOVICH, Mary “Bako” - May 21, 1914 to February 8, 2008 - It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of such a wonderful “mother”, “mother-in-law”, “grandmother” and “great-grandmother”, Mary Viskovich at the age of 93 years. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Victor in 1958, her son-in-law Tony Corak in 1962 and her two grandchildren, Nicholas Viskovich, 1962 and David Corak, 1995. Mary is survived by her sister Zora Hrvatin in Croatia, her son, Nevio (Josette), Mary and Julio. Let me tell you, she was one in a million . . . loved by all she came into contact with. Mary was born in Croatia and came to Kirkland Lake with her husband and three children in 1951. She was loved deeply by her thirteen grand-children, twenty-two great- grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild . . . they couldn't get enough of her. Bako was a fantastic cook for many years working tirelessly at many local restaurants and clubs, but gardening was her passion. She could also be spotted in the early hours cleaning snow from her walkway and looking after her little house . . . As per Mary's wishes, a private memorial service will be held in the summer at the Kirkland Lake Cemetery. At this time we would like to thank the nurses on the fourth floor at the hospital, especially Debbie, for being there for us, “thank-you”. KOWAL, Fr. Stanislaw, OMI The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Assumption Province, announce the passing of Fr. Stanislaw Kowal, OMI in Ottawa on Sunday, February 10th, 2008 after a long and difficult illness. Fr. Stan was not only a priest who served the Church with a big and generous heart, but also the Polish community of Canada. He lived out his priestly life with missionary zeal and great enthusiasm. His passing at such a young age is a great loss, not only to his Oblate community, but also to the people he served. Fr. Stan Kowal was born on February 5, 1953 in Grzeska, Poland. In 1979, Stan entered the novitiate at Swiety Krzyz and made his first vows a year later. After spending two years studying philosophy and four years studying theology, he earned a Masters Degree in Catechetics. He was ordained a deacon and then a priest (1985-1986) by Archbishop Jerzy Stroba of Poznan. After ministering for two years in Poland, Fr. Stan was sent to Canada, arriving in November, 1989. His first assignment took him to Holy Ghost Parish in Winnipeg (1991-1993). He then went to St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Mississauga (1993-1995), and later to Holy Rosary Parish in Edmonton (1995-1999). Fr. Stan returned to St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Mississauga, where he worked as pastor from 1999-2005. From 2005, he served as Pastor in Ottawa at St. Hyacinth Parish. He is survived by his brother, who is a priest working in Germany, and two sisters in Poland. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at St. Hyacinth Church in Ottawa from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. (Rosary at 7:00 p.m.) and on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Mississauga at 11:00 a.m. Visitation and the Rosary will start at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Assumption Cemetery, Mississauga. The Oblates would like to thank Dr. Charles Czarnowski, the staff of the Ottawa General Hospital and especially the Intensive Care Unit for their generosity, sensitivity and care of Fr. KEARNS, Edna Claire. 1915 - 2008. On February 9, 2008 at the age of ninety-two, after a long and valiant battle against Parkinson's disease. Daughter of the late Alice Ste-Marie and John Nicholas Kearns. Predeceased by her beloved sister Frances (Sister Alice Mary). She was admired and respected for her perseverance and endurance in the face of the disease, for her intelligence and humour, as well as for her generosity. She will be remembered with much affection and greatly missed by her devoted friend Wanda, who thought of Edna as her beloved "big sister". KELLY (nee Cross), Annie "Mae" (formerly Pettipas) KELLY (nee Cross), Annie "Mae" (formerly Pettipas) - 85, of Westphal, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2008 in Dartmouth General Hospital with her family by her side. Born in Westphal May 30 1922, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Sadie (Osborne) Cross. She was predeceased by brothers, Harris, Addie (Elsie), Gerald (Ellie); sister, Elsie; husbands, Frederick Pettipas, and Roy Kelly; an infant son and grandson. She is survived by brother, Frederick (Shirley); sister, Ellen MacLeod (Douglas); son, Carl Pettipas (Dianne); daughters, Dianne Zwicker (Ross deceased), Sheila Zwicker (Bruce), Bernice Nantais (David), Judie Saulnier (Roland deceased), Nancy Atwood (Ronald) and Sherry Conrad (Keith). She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. John's Anglican Church in Westphal. Mae served as president for the Canadian Council of the Blind, Dartmouth Harbour chapter for many years, and for a period of time was employed at the CNIB, Halifax. Mae was not inhibited by her blindness and participated in several CNIB sporting events, she loved music, singing and playing the piano, and enjoyed being with her family and many friends, along with knitting afghans, listening to her audio books, and to Nascar (#48). She had been a Ham operator for many years (VE1ET). For the past 8 months Mae resided at The Berkeley Retirement Residence Dartmouth where she enjoyed the company of many new friends. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service and reception will be held early May at her request. An announcement will be made in The Chronicle Herald at that time. PROVENZANO, Maria 2008-02-11 Mrs. Maria Provenzano (Sacco) passed away peacefully at St. Joseph‘s Hospital on Saturday February 9, 2008 with her family by her side. Maria was born in Nicastro, Italy on October 16, 1926. She married Tony (Pietro) Provenzano on December 18, 1948. In 1958 she immigrated to Port Arthur with her three sons to reunite with her husband. Soon after, her daughter was born. She enjoyed good years raising her family at her home on Winnipeg Avenue and then on Anten Street. She will be remembered for the kindness and love she demonstrated to her family and friends. Maria was a devoted wife, a loving mother, the best nonna, and a loyal friend. She was an amazing cook and a most generous hostess. Even unexpected guests enjoyed a home-cooked meal prepared within the blink of an eye. Her grandchildren have fond memories of shopping with nonna on Saturday mornings and playing animated card games at Christmas. They will always remember her selfless nature; her children and grandchildren‘s welfare would always take precedence over her own. Maria is survived by her husband Tony of 60 years, children: Tony and his daughter Ashley, Jack and his sons Peter and Christopher, Adrian and his wife Luisa and their children Anthony and Lauren; Claudia and her husband Sonny Costanzo and their daughters Crystal (Paul Kraft), Catrina, Loriana, and Stephanie. She is also survived by brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws: Frank and Vincenza Provenzano, Ugo and Elvira Provenzano, niece and best friend Livia DeLuca, as well as numerous relatives in Thunder Bay, Italy, and Argentina. She is predeceased by her parents: Francesco and Caterina Sacco, brother Francesco, and brother Domenico. LaFORREST, Hugh 2008-02-11 Mr. Hugh LaForrest, age 83 years, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, February 9, 2008. Hugh was born and educated in Quibell, Ontario. He worked in the bush and ran a tourist camp until he moved to Thunder Bay in 1962. He was employed by Local 628 Plumbers and Pipefitters until retirement. In 1963 Hugh married his wife Peggy. He had a great love for the outdoors being an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. He enjoyed cooking and gardening. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Hugh is survived by his son Dani and his wife Kerri; grandchildren Elijah and Hannah; brother John; sisters Jean Robinson, Lila Haukeness, Mildred Lundstrom, Doris Davis and husband Gareth and Nora Hill and husband Bryan. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Predeceased by his wife Peggy; sister Myrtle Groneng; brothers Charles, Lorne and David. MOREHOUSE, Gerald Eldred MOREHOUSE, Gerald Eldred - Forest, Ont., formerly of Toronto and Digby. It is with sadness the family announces the going home of Gerald on February 11, 2008, in his 95th year. He leaves to mourn his devoted wife of 68 years, Melba (Wagner). He was the loving father of Sandra Cutfeet, Glen and Joanne Morehouse, Elizabeth and Mike Mischtelle; cherished grandfather of Robyn, Kelly, Danny, Derek, Courtney and Tyler; great-grandfather of Josh, Sarah, Scott, Clay, Ryan, Joel, Rebecca, Simon, Nodin, Noah, Reese and Ethan, and great great-grandfather of Davina. Born in Digby County on May 29, 1913, he was the last surviving member of a family of 13. He moved to Toronto after the Second World War and worked as a machinist for an automobile company for 30 years, then retired to become a locksmith for 20 years. He moved to Forest in 1997. DEXTER, Joseph Carl DEXTER, Joseph Carl - 72, New Minas, Kings Co., passed away Monday, February 11, 2008, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Curtis and Muriel (Norton) Dexter. Joseph worked for Sterling's Fruit Farm for over 35 years. He had a great love for horse and pony pulls. He will be sadly missed by his many family and friends. Joseph is survived by his brother, Murray, Kentville. Besides his parents, Joseph was predeceased by his brothers, Curtis, John and Paul. Visitation for Mr. Dexter will be held from 7-9 p.m. today with a funeral service held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 16, in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home 5 Leverett Ave., Kentville (902-678-2151) with Rev. Robert Billings officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Jaw Bone Corner Cemetery. Donations in Joseph's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Canadian Diabetes Association.
