BEATTY, Christopher Perrin April 26, 1984 - January 30, 2008 Our beloved Christopher passed away peacefully in Chiangmai, Thailand, following a motorcycle accident the previous weekend. He was surrounded in his last moments by members of his immediate family and some of his closest friends, and by the prayers and good wishes of the hundreds of people whose lives he enriched. Christopher's short life was characterised by his need to love and to be loved, his independence of thought, his intense loyalty to those who mattered most to him, and his determination to fight for what he believed was right. He was born at Guelph General Hospital and lived his first eleven years in Fergus, Ontario. As a child, he was bright, fun-loving and often mischievous. He brought enormous joy to his family and to their friends, who loved watching him grow. In 1995, Christopher moved with his family to Ottawa. His most important academic influence came when he was a student at Sedbergh School, where the patient and loving attention from staff and the close friendships he developed helped shape the young man he was to become. He held those friends and the many others he made along the way close to his heart throughout the rest of his life, alongside his immediate family, his grandparents, his aunts and uncles, and his cousins. Christopher chose King's College at the University of Western Ontario, for his post-secondary education, graduating in May 2007 with a BA (Hons) in Political Science and History. In addition to being a natural athlete, he loved music and took particular pleasure in introducing new songs and singers to his family and friends. A skilled writer and a passionate debater of politics and philosophy, he loved to argue about ideas, often long into the night. His charm and his intensity could light up the darkest room. Christopher was delighted when Patrick, his only sibling, became a student at Western. Patrick and Christopher formed a deep bond, and Christopher was prepared to take on all comers to support his younger brother. Christopher's death is a heavy loss for Patrick, who loved him equally strongly, and will always be grateful for their time together. Christopher left Canada for Chiangmai, Thailand at the end of July to spend a year as a residence don at the American Pacific International School. He planned to return to Canada this summer. He would then enroll in graduate school before embarking on his mission to change the world. While in Chiangmai, Christopher found time to explore. In October he visited Cambodia by himself and he spent Christmas with Canadian friends living in Korea. In his final conversation with his parents, he talked about how happy he was and about the warmth of the Thai people. Christopher's last evening was spent with friends from the school, sharing drinks and discussing philosophical issues. After his accident, both the excellent local medical staff and the Canadian government did everything possible to help Christopher and his family. His aunt, Dr. Joanne Wilkinson rushed to his bedside from Australia to assist. Christopher's body was cremated in Chiangmai and will come home to Canada with Patrick and his parents. A service will be held for him at McLaren Hall, Ashbury College, 362 Mariposa Avenue, Ottawa at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, 2008, immediately followed by a reception. KENDALL, Stephen James Dec. 24, 1954 - Jan. 29, 2008 After a brief battle with stomach cancer, Stephen (Steve) passed away in Winnipeg in the presence of his friend, partner and lover of 17 years, Glen Patrick Hoban. He is survived by his mother Louise Mary Kendall (nee Delahunty), his friends, and his co-workers at the Norwood Hotel, where he was a chef, many of whom were very fond of him. He is predeceased by his father, Frederick James Kendall. Steve spent his childhood as a 'forces brat'. His great loves in life were knowledge, learning, skill, books and the Divine. Stephen was one of the founders of the Winnipeg Pagan community in the late 80's. He spoke a few times on the Peter Warren show, and was for a time editor of "The Minstrel" magazine. He was writing a book which was to distill his decades of experience with the Divine. OSBERG, G. L. (Larry) 1917 - 2008 Peacefully on the evening of January 28, 2008 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Born and educated in Alberta, Larry met Edith Spencer during the war in Ottawa - an event he later described as "the best thing that ever happened to me". After completing his doctorate at the University of Toronto in 1949, he joined the National Research Council, working there until retirement in 1982. An avid downhill skier until the age of 87, Larry had only recently begun to think of himself as getting old. Predeceased in 2001 by Edith, as well as by sister Bertha Bott and his brother Gunder Osberg. Larry will be sorely missed by his children Lars Osberg (Molly Hurd) of Halifax, Peter Osberg (Mary) of West Vancouver, and Zella Osberg (Stephen Hazell) of Ottawa, and by his grandchildren Natasha, Spencer, Brendan, Heather, Sarah, Karin, Claire, Elspeth and Duncan, step-grandchildren Kirsty and Winnie, great grandchild Imogen and nieces. The Memorial Service will be held at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Avenue, at 1 pm on Sunday, February 3, 2008. SHAW, John James (Jim) C.A. Peacefully surrounded by family, Jim went to join his wife of 49 years, Estelle. Survived by his sons, Tim (Sandra), Dan (Cathy), Matt (Gail), Bob (Kathy), John, Jim and 12 grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Len (Heather) and Earl (Marian). Jim was an accomplished athlete playing football, hockey and minor league baseball. STROUD, Randall Henry 2008-02-01 We are saddened to announce the sudden passing of our brother, Randy Stroud, on January 29th, 2008. Randy was born in 1958 in Fort William, Ontario. Later, the family moved to the Current River area in Port Arthur where Randy attended local schools. In the late seventies, Randy started truck driving like his dad and the highway was his home. He was born to be behind the wheel. Randy never married but adored his niece and nephew and they loved him. We will always remember Randy for his gentleness and quiet ways. Randy will be missed by his sister Barb (Ivan) Chaput of Fort St. John, BC, brother Jim of Milton, Ontario, nephew Justin Chaput of Fort St. John, BC and niece Angel (Doug) Pruden, and their children Kieran and Logan of Chetwynd, BC., along with numerous relatives in various parts of Canada. Sherry was born on September 4, 1954 in Thunder Bay, ON, where she spent most of her younger years. She then married her husband, Donald and have been married for 34 years. Together they had two children, Bryan John and Jennifer Dawn. They moved to Dryden in 1981. Sherry enjoyed gardening, camping, hunting and fishing with her family. She survived by her loving husband Donald, son Bryan, wife Jennifer and children Jordan and Darian, daughter Jennifer Betker, husband Darren and their child Miranda all of Dryden. Father William Satterthwaite of Dryden, brothers Don and wife Lana of Dryden, and Robert of Thunder Bay, ON, sister Debbie Oberg of Dryden, and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Sherry was predeceased by her mother Barbara Ann Satterthwaite of Dryden. SPRAGG, LAVINIA PHYLLIS - Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, January 31, 2008. She was the wife of the late Harry L. Spragg. Lavinia was born on May 9, 1922 in Saint John, NB and was a daughter of the late William Frederick and Patience Lavinia (Peer) Dunham. A devout and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lavinia served as president of the Relief Society and Primary organizations. She and her husband, Harry, served a temple mission in Washington, DC in 1978. She is survived by one son, David Spragg (Cheryl), two daughters, Carol Crilley (John), Bonnie Wetmore (Robert), one brother, John Dunham (Olga), one sister, Frances Arnem (Robert), five grandsons: Edward Crilley (Gina), David Crilley (Marcey), Christopher Wetmore (Erika), Caleb Spragg and David Spragg, all of Saint John, five granddaughters; Tricia Fox (Jonathan), Beaverbank, NS, Jennifer Sanford (David), Alexander, Maine, Melissa Haas (Brian), Hampton, NB, Rebecca Spragg and Carolyn Wetmore, both of Saint John. MCLAREN, DONALD - Donald McLaren, of St. Andrews, N.B. passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2008 after 76 years of good living and a short battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed by son, Tony; daughter-in-law, Julie; and grandsons, Trevor and Tyler; and his dog, Bandit. Also saddened by his loss are his sister, Florence and Jack Irwin; his brothers, William (Laudia) and Louis (June) and their children, along with the Trecartin family and many friends. Predeceased by his loving wife, Freda (Trecartin); his parents, Louis and LuLu (Lambert); and brother, Ronald. Donnie was born and lived his entire life in St. Andrews. He and Freda previously owned the Blue Moon and Picket Fence Motels in St. Andrews. He was often jokingly referred to as the Mayor of Chamcook and at one time was an avid bowler and very active in the Legion, and with the committee for Ministers Island. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Jeff Jackson, Dr. Green and the staff in Emergency Care at Charlotte County Hospital, Bill, Laudia and Robert McLaren, and especially Susan Goertzen and Cliff Pendleton who remained at Donnie's side while we travelled from Ontario.
