O'NEILL, ELIZABETH SCOTT 'BETTY' - The death Elizabeth Scott 'Betty' O'Neill occurred on January 31, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Long Reach, NB she was the daughter of the late John Dorset and Gertrude May (Scott) Williams. She retired in 1976 from the DVA Hospital as Nursing Supervisor and owned and operated O'Neill's Country Store, Kingston Peninsula with her husband. She had been a member of St. Paul's Valley Anglican Church, a member of the CNR Pension and a life member of the Kingston Peninsula Heritage Inc. Surviving are her sons, Ian MacGarvie (Faye) of Saint John, Blair O'Neill (Susan) of Halifax, Michael O'Neill (Bonnie) of Long Reach; daughter, Dawn Lent (Raymond) of Hampton; grandchildren, Troy, Derek, Andrea, Kimberlee, Deirdre, Rebecca, Kelsey and Brianna; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Zachery and Lynne and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her 1st husband, Wallace Donald MacGarvie; 2nd husband, Donald J. B. O'Neill; son, Aubrey David MacGarvie and sister, Lilian Clara Laming. MARKEY, BASIL THOMAS - Basil Thomas Markey, 85, of Lindsay, NB passed away on Thursday, January 31st, 2008 at The Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville, NB. Basil was born in Hartford, NB, on December 14th, 1922, son of the late Mathew and Annie (Gallagher) Markey. Basil is survived by three daughters, Donna Hamilton (Robert), Belleville, NB, Barbara Springer (Winston), Waterville, NB, Susan Dukeshire, Woodstock, NB; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren; special friend, Ruth Allen, Fredericton, NB; and her family; brother, Earl Markey, Hartford, NB; sister, Helen Fewer, Woodstock, NB; several nieces; nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Basil was predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Culberson); daughter, Elizabeth; and a grandson, Billy. HARRIS, STAN - The passing of Stan Harris of Dalhousie (Darlington), NB, occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Wednesday, January 30, 2008. He was 84. Born August 30, 1923 in Chatham, NB, he was the son of the late John and Catherine (Miller) Harris. He spent his working life as a bricklayer, employed, for the most part at NBIP. A veteran of WWII and the Korean War, Stan served in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was a 53 year continuing member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Dalhousie Branch No. 17. Stan enjoyed playing hockey as a goalie and continued to do so to around 40 years of age. He loved to sing and found great enjoyment entertaining his family and friends. Stan is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Chapman) Harris, they were days from their 49th Anniversary; children, David Roy (Violet) of Stittsville, Ont., Brenda Senechal (Ronnie) of Dalhousie, Derek Roy (Susan) of Innisfail, Alberta, Megan Roy-O'Brien (Brendan) of Caledon East, Ont., Sharon Harris (Terry Smith) of Dalhousie and Heather Creaser (Eben) of Long's Creek, NB; eleven grandchildren, three great granddaughters and one great great grandson; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Stan was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been predeceased by five siblings. The family will receive relatives and friends at Maher's Funeral Home, 421 Victoria St., Dalhousie, NB on Monday, February 4, 2008 from 7-9 PM. Margaret Daigle (1915 - 2008) Rexton, NB - Mrs. Margaret Daigle passed away at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital , January 30th, 2008 at the age of 92. She was a former member of the C.W.L. and the Rexton Golden Age Club. She was the daughter of the late Luke Daigle and Lucy (Richard) Daigle. She leaves behind one sister, Florence Johnson (late Gérard) of St.Ignace; one brother, John Daigle (late Catherine); a special friend, Norma Carter of Moncton; and several nieces and nephews. CHRISTIE, Dorothy It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy Lillian Janet Christie (nee Traquair) on January 26, 2008. Dorothy will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her daughter, Janet (George) Giles of DeWinton, AB, her grandchildren Pat Giles of Calgary, and Michelle, Andy and Matthew Giles of DeWinton, AB and her brother Don (Judith) Traquair of Canberra, Australia. She is also survived by her husband John Christie of Calgary; a nephew and nieces of Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. She will also be missed by her very special friend Helen Nicholson of Calgary and cousins in southern Ontario. Dorothy was predeceased by her son John David Christie in September 2002. Dorothy was born in Tuckersmith Township of Huron County, Ont. on May 1, 1920. Dorothy moved to Calgary after graduating from nursing at the Victoria Hospital in London, Ont. in 1943 and has lived here ever since. For the last twenty-five years, Dorothy has lived at the Carewest Fanning Centre, after suffering a major stroke. She enjoyed participating in the many activities offered there, particularly painting and gardening. We would like to thank all of the staff at the Fanning Centre for their warmth, generosity and kindness, and for helping Dorothy feel at home for so many years. We would also like to thank Dr. John Bradley for his years of care and support, as well as the staff of the emergency department and Unit 52 of the Peter Lougheed Centre for caring for Dorothy in her last hours. Gloria was born on April 30, 1930 in Jamaica. She loved spending time with family and friends. Margaret Wesley, of Constance Lake The funeral service for Constance Lake health clinic worker Margaret (nee Taylor) Wesley, 59, was held Jan. 19, 2008 following her death Jan. 14 at Sudbury hospital from diabetes complications. Born June 29, 1948 at Pagwa River, she worked initially as a Jane Mattinas Health Centre referral clerk and later as a community health representative after taking the two-year Confederation College program in the early 1990s. Besides her Mattinas Centre work in health promotion and volunteer efforts with elders, she helped raise her grandchildren and worked with the community’s Santa Claus committee. Known for her sense of humour and laughter, she enjoyed nature, the outdoors, and outings to the former Mammamattawa settlement at English River. Predeceased by her parents Annie Iserhoff and Simeon Taylor, and infant son Terrence, she leaves her husband George Wesley, a son Daniel Wesley Sr, a brother Ernest Taylor, all of Constance Lake, and 15 grandchildren (plus a 16th due in February), all of Constance Lake. First Nation pastor Darius Ferris directed the service at Full Gospel Church. Interment followed at the Constance Lake resting grounds by her father’s gravesite.

Evelyn was a long time resident of Kirkland Lake known for her secret recipe fudge, knitting, bingo and sense of humour. Funeral service was held in Sydney, Australia on Wednesday, January 30, 2008. KNOLL, Catherine Clare (Murray) Peacefully and in the presence of those she loved, at Ottawa, January 30th, 2008, in her seventy-ninth year. Cathy will be remembered fondly and missed greatly by all those fortunate enough to have known her, especially her beloved husband and best friend of fifty-four years, Alan Knoll; her sisters Marie Anne White of Calgary and Patricia Prowse of Salt Spring Island, BC; her children Angela, Gerald (Louise), Mary Kay, Catherine (Peter), John (Lee) and Greg (Kelly); and her grandchildren Justine, Sara, Jameson, Andrew, Elizabeth, Carleigh, Alex, Tess, William, Catie, and Heidi. Cathy was a very social being who loved family and friends, life and laughter, wit and stories, and was happiest in the midst of a large (and loud!) three-generation Knoll gathering. Her faith, love and hope also radiated outward to her community, where she gave her time joyfully to many charities, including the Catholic Cursillo movement, the Ottawa Food Bank, the Christmas Exchange, the Waupoos Family Farm, and primary-school mentoring. Instead of flowers please make a donation to any of these charities, or to Cathy's favourite, the St. Joseph Supper Table (St. Joseph's Parish, 151 Laurier East, Ottawa, K1N 6N8). NORRIS, Rita - It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the death of Rita Norris (nee Raby) early in the morning of January 31, at the age of 91 years. Rita died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by that which she valued most; the love and support of those important to her. Her son, Fred was at her side and provided immeasurable comfort during her final hours. A lifetime proud resident of Sudbury, Rita was the loving wife of (Major E.J.) Ed Norris (predeceased 1978), the daughter of Leda (Canuel) and Arthur (Bunny) Raby and sister of Lucille (Gordon Bissett), Ralph and Edmund (all predeceased). As the undisputed matriarch of her family, she is survived by her daughter Judith Cleminson of Sudbury, and her sons Jim (Maureen Jack) of Niagara Falls and Fred of Sudbury. She was simply “Nana“ to Andrea Shea Hudson (Jim Hudson) of Lively, Chris Hill (Donna), Josanne Hill and her special “boys“, great-grandsons AJ & Brandon Hill all of Naples, Florida. Rita was the much- loved sister-in-law of Dr. Albert (Ab) and Jimmie Norris of Iowa City, Iowa. She is also survived by a vast number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Fiercely independent, Rita leaves a legacy of strong family values and traditions, many many recipes that “freeze beautifully“ and memories of a woman with a sharp mind and a kind heart. HAYES, Brian Thomas - June 30, 1940 - January 27, 2008 Brian Hayes, beloved spouse of Penny of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at the age of 67 years. Brian was born in Montreal, Quebec and moved to Calgary where he established his own furniture company in the mid-eighties. He has many friends in the business and enjoyed his most recent business venture of which he shared with Penny. Brian played and coached football in his younger years and loved watching sports while enjoying his famous Montreal steamed hot dogs and French fries with his family. Brian's heart never left Montreal and he will be returning to his heritage where he will be buried with his family later in the summer (a notification will be posted before the event so that all family and friends may pay their respects). We will truly miss his infectious fun-loving attitude towards life. Brian is survived by his spouse Penny; his son Michael Hayes, his wife Kim Hochstein and granddaughter Payton Dee Hayes currently living in London, England; and son Patrick Francis Hayes of Calgary. BRISBOURNE, Eugene William Everard March 13, 1928 - January 23, 2008 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Eugene Brisbourne at the age of 79 years. Eugene will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by Pauline and their seven children: Greg, Bev (Roger) Davies, Joan (Grant) Jackson, Brian (Theresa), Sheldon (Corinna), Mark (Helen) and Kim (Jan) Stepkowski; ten grandchildren: Nikki, Brandon, Ryan, Bradley, Kevin, Trevor, Aaron, Shaelynn, Tierra-Lynn, and Jayden; and his great-grandchildren: Reece and Leah. He is also survived by his brother Ken; and sisters Sheila (Art) Liddle, Edith Bowman and Grace (John) Diehl, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children all whom he loved. Eugene was predeceased by parents, William and Elizabeth and brothers Harry and Dennis. Eugene was born in Prince Albert, SK in 1928. He joined the RCAF in August, 1950 and married Pauline in 1955. He had an impressive career as a Pilot, Airframe Technician & Mechanic, Sergeant and Aeronautical Draftsman. He retired from the RCAF in November, 1970. His hobbies were drawing and oil painting, building model airplanes, mechanics and fishing. Flying planes always remained his passion. Eugene loved to visit with his family and share a lifetime of stories and experiences. He will always be remembered for his positive outlook, generosity, patience and kindness. Eugene will be sadly missed by all who knew him. We would like to extend a special thank-you to all the caring and thoughtful medical staff of Unit 82 at the Rockyview Hospital. OSBERG, G. L. (Larry) 1917 - 2008 Peacefully on the evening of January 28, 2008 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Born and educated in Alberta, Larry met Edith Spencer during the war in Ottawa - an event he later described as "the best thing that ever happened to me". After completing his doctorate at the University of Toronto in 1949, he joined the National Research Council, working there until retirement in 1982. An avid downhill skier until the age of 87, Larry had only recently begun to think of himself as getting old. Predeceased in 2001 by Edith, as well as by sister Bertha Bott and his brother Gunder Osberg. Larry will be sorely missed by his children Lars Osberg (Molly Hurd) of Halifax, Peter Osberg (Mary) of West Vancouver, and Zella Osberg (Stephen Hazell) of Ottawa, and by his grandchildren Natasha, Spencer, Brendan, Heather, Sarah, Karin, Claire, Elspeth and Duncan, step-grandchildren Kirsty and Winnie, great grandchild Imogen and nieces. The Memorial Service will be held at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Avenue, at 1 pm on Sunday, February 3, 2008. SPRAGG, LAVINIA PHYLLIS - Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, January 31, 2008. She was the wife of the late Harry L. Spragg. Lavinia was born on May 9, 1922 in Saint John, NB and was a daughter of the late William Frederick and Patience Lavinia (Peer) Dunham. A devout and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lavinia served as president of the Relief Society and Primary organizations. She and her husband, Harry, served a temple mission in Washington, DC in 1978. She is survived by one son, David Spragg (Cheryl), two daughters, Carol Crilley (John), Bonnie Wetmore (Robert), one brother, John Dunham (Olga), one sister, Frances Arnem (Robert), five grandsons: Edward Crilley (Gina), David Crilley (Marcey), Christopher Wetmore (Erika), Caleb Spragg and David Spragg, all of Saint John, five granddaughters; Tricia Fox (Jonathan), Beaverbank, NS, Jennifer Sanford (David), Alexander, Maine, Melissa Haas (Brian), Hampton, NB, Rebecca Spragg and Carolyn Wetmore, both of Saint John.
