HOWARD, Walter Eastwood February 12, 1920 - January 20, 2008 Walter Eastwood Howard passed away peacefully at the Intercare Chinook Hospice on Sunday, January 20, 2008 at the age of 87 years. He loved his family and is lovingly remembered by his wife of sixty-two years Peggy, and his daughters Lynda Howard, Kate Howard, Barbara (Norm) Denoon, and Joan (Dave) Sullivan and grandchildren, Michael and Ben Porter, Lisa, Karley, and Connor Denoon, and Tyler and Nicole Sullivan. A native of Calgary, AB, Walter was born on February 12, 1920. He served overseas as an officer in active combat with the Calgary Highlanders during World War II. He returned home to convalesce and article with his father H.E. Howard FCA. He received his CA in 1953, his FCA in 1983, the same year in which he retired as senior partner from KPMG accounting firm in Calgary. Walter was past chairman of the A.M.A., served on the executive for the John Howard Society, the board of Governors of Mount Royal College and Kirby College. He was past president of the Calgary branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society, and served on the executive of the Alberta division. Walter was a past member of the Gyro Club, and past president of the Al Azhar Temple Shriners Mounted Patrol with whom he rode for thirty years. He was Potentate of Al Azhar Temple in 1974, and made an honorary Inspector General 33 degree of the Canadian Imperial Council Scottish Rite in 1971. He was a member of the Royal Order of Scotland. Walter was a life-time member of Christ Church Elbow Park and served on the vestry as well as Rectors warden and was past commissioner of Calgary Branch and Canadian Pony Club. He spent his youth as an active member of the YMCA. He loved the out of doors, riding, fishing and was one of the first group of campers at YMCA Camp Chief Hector. He enjoyed a lifetime membership at the Glencoe Club and his retirement years as a member of the Bearspaw Golf and Country Club. Funeral Services will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 - 8 Street S.W.) on Friday, January 25, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . HUTCHINSON, Aleck, PhD - At Linhaven Home in St. Catharines, with family at his side, on Sunday, January 20, 2008, Aleck Hutchinson of Vineland Station, in his 94th year. Beloved husband of Doreen Croft Hutchinson and dear father of David (Gail) of Ottawa, and their children Lauren, Julie, Steven and Jessica; Donald (Judy) of Bloomfield Hills, MI and their children Adam, Sarah and Andrew; Neil (Leslie) of Oshawa; Anne (Paul) of North Gower and their children Carolyn, Christian and Alexa; Wanda (Ian) of Dorchester and their children James and Daniel. Always a farmer at heart, Aleck was fortunate enough to combine his love of growing apples with a career as a research scientist with the Ontario Department of Agriculture at Vineland, Ontario, after short careers as a schoolteacher in Alberta and then as a serviceman in the RCAF overseas. At retirement he planted two acres of blueberries which he continued to farm for over 20 years into his 90's. He remained an active member of the Ontario Fruitgrowers Association and the Ontario Order of Foresters well into his retirement. Aleck was born in Weyburn, SK and moved to Evansburg, AB as a young boy. He served in the RCAF from 1942-1946 as an airborne radar technician and later instructor stationed on D-Day at Tarrant-Rushton (“A Bridge Too Far“) RAF bomber and glider airfield in the south of England. During a trip across Canada as a soldier he met his wife Doreen in Toronto whom he married in 1947. He was educated at Alberta Normal School, obtained a BSc and MSc at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and earned a PhD from McGill University (Macdonald College) in botany/horticulture in 1958. Aleck and Doreen moved their family to Vineland in 1959 where he began a career as a research scientist, involved with rootstock development and his love and passion, apples. His pioneering work in breeding apple varieties and identifying hardy dwarfing apple rootstocks has had lasting benefits to the fruit growing industry in Canada and the United States. One of his accomplishments was the assembly of one of the largest orchards of apple varieties in the world, and he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the International Dwarf Fruit Tree Association for “devoting a lifetime in research to improving cultivars, rootstocks and cultural techniques“. Aleck and Doreen raised a family of 5 children in the Vineland area, born in 4 provinces across Canada. A religious man who could recall the day the Lord became his saviour, he was active in the church throughout his adult life, first at Vineland United Church as a Sunday school teacher, and later at the First Baptist Church in Beamsville as an usher and a deacon. The family will receive friends at the VINELAND CHAPEL of the TALLMAN FUNERAL HOMES, 3277 King St. on Thursday 2 - 4 and 7 - 8:30 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Beamsville on Friday, January 25th at 2 p.m. Interment at Wilberforce, ON. OBITUARY ALBERT (AL) MONTAGUE CHANNELL Passed away on Friday, January 18, 2008 at his home in Waterloo, ON, surrounded by his loving and caring family - Audrey (Alexander), his beloved wife of 53 years, and sons Scott, Brent and Craig. Al will be greatly and sadly missed by son Scott, daughter-in-law Marlene and grandchildren Kate, Jane and Scott Jr. (North Vancouver, BC), son Brent, daughter-in-law Denise and grandchildren Vanessa and Victoria (Oakville, ON) and son Craig, daughter-in-law Lori and grandchildren Kayla and Mellissa (Plymouth, MI), as well as brother Doug (Mississauga, ON) and sister Barbara (Miller) (London, ON). Al was predeceased by his parents Harold A. (1989) and Grace E. (Perry 1986). Al was born in Sherbrooke, QC, on November 10, 1927. He lived in various cities in Quebec and Eastern Ontario until joining the Royal Canadian Navy and serving on the HMCS Red Deer during the Second World War. Al then settled in Montreal, joining the Royal Bank of Canada in 1947. He enjoyed a very successful 40 year career with numerous stops in Montreal, as well as New York City, Havana, Moncton, Vancouver and Coral Gables, FL, where he retired as Vice President - Latin America/Caribbean in November of 1987. In retirement, Al and Audrey split their time between Waterloo, ON and Sarasota, FL. Al was extremely proud of his 3 sons and 7 grandchildren, traveling often to see them in many of their sporting and academic activities. Al believed in giving back to the community. Throughout his life he was involved with many charitable and volunteer organizations, including the Waterloo Home Support Services Program, where he was a volunteer driver for many years. Being an avid tennis player, Al joined the Waterloo Tennis Club and played with and against younger opponents right up until October 23, 2007. He was then hit with the scourge of cancer in early November 2007. Al's battle with cancer was short and courageous. His family would like to thank Drs. Moolman, Ward and Tan, the nursing staff at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre, the nurses on the 8th floor of the Grand River Hospital, the Community Care nurses (Sara, Paula and Joan) and the nurses at Bayshore Home Health and the Red Cross for their care and compassion towards Al and his family during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice in Al's honour would be greatly appreciated. Cremation has taken place. MAKO, Erna - (Gretzinger) - On Monday January 21, 2008 at the Niagara-on-the- Lake Hospital. Erna was born in the Ukraine on March 5, 1917 eldest of 11 children to Albert and Theresa. At an early age she came to Canada with the rest of her family and settled in Saskatchewan near Nokomis. She hated the cold but loved school, especially writing. Her stories were special and she prided having them read to the class by her teacher. Erna met and married Steve in 1935 and had 56 wonderful years together. They loved to travel! They came to Ontario in 1943 and eventually bought a farm on Scott Street in St. Catharines. In 1960 they moved to a farm in St. Davids. Erna enjoyed life at Pleasant Manor in Virgil for the last two years. Mom loved her gardens, animals and cooking (yummy desserts!!). She especially loved her family and was an excellent example of how a Christian life should be lived. Her life lived will continue to be a beacon to those who knew and loved her. Erna was predeceased by grandson Darryl Nikkel; brothers Ervin, Ron, Leon and sister Frieda. She leaves behind to mourn her children Erwin (Sandy), Larry (Barbara), Irene Bucknall (Jim) and Ruth Nikkel (Allister). Her grandchildren Marty, Marsha, Murray, Brian, Delby, Darlene, Dennis and Cheryl have lost an irreplaceable grandma. Erna found special joy from her 10 great- grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings, Bruno (Adelle), Alvin, Harry (Donna), Ben (Ann), Jean, Agnes and many nieces and nephews. BOTARI, Flavio Anthony (“Flav”) - At Foyer Richelieu, Welland, Friday, January 18th, 2008, peacefully, aged 92 years. Flavio is predeceased by parents John and Elvira (née Corsini), brother Louis, sister Agnes Page (Arnold), brother Joseph, sister Mary Samson (Francis) and by his beloved wife Louise (née Lusina). He is lovingly remembered by son John (Susan), and by grandchildren Katherine and Paul, all of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; by sister Leah Tirone (Steve), of Welland; and by countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Flavio will be remembered as an artist, teacher, naturalist, horticulturalist, World War II veteran, amateur astronomer, churchman, musician, modeller, friend, father, and grandfather. Born on August 25th 1915, he matriculated from Welland High and Vocational School in 1935. After graduating from the Hamilton Normal School in 1936, he worked for the Welland Board of Education, travelling between city schools on foot or bicycle as an itinerant art teacher. In 1942, Flavio volunteered for the RCAF, and trained as a Radio Mechanic. He went overseas to England in July 1944, seconded to the Royal Air Force. There, attached to 299 Squadron (RAF 38 Group), he worked on the highly secret airborne radar systems of Short Stirling bombers that towed troop gliders, and dropped supplies to the French and Dutch Resistance. After receiving his B.A. (Western) in 1947, Mr. Botari began his long career as a high school art teacher at Welland High and Vocational School. It was a point of pride for him that many of his students went on to careers in the arts. Mr. Botari gave generously of his time in extra-curricular activities, founding the WH&VS Model Flying Club and Art Club. Outside school, Flavio maintained an interest in a variety of activities. He was an avid gardener, a notable wood sculptor and a keen observer of the night skies. As a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Parish, he served as Choirmaster through the 1960s and early 1970s. Retirement gave Flav more time for his volunteer work. He often played the piano and sang for residents of the Welland Hospital's Extended Care Unit, the Rose City Seniors' Activity Centre, and St. Charles Village. He played the string bass, practicing with the Jimmy Marando big band during the 1970s. Flavio was a founding member of the Rose City Model Flyers, and was involved in many other local organizations. Flavio Botari was a man who saw beauty and goodness in everything and everyone he encountered, and who served his country and his community well. He will be sadly missed. The family will receive their friends at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence 19 Young Street, Welland on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where a Vigil will be held Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church on Thursday morning at 11 o'clock. Private Rite of Committal at a later date. PRIEUR, Marjorie Georgina Watson (nee Thompson) December 24, 1921 - January 19, 2008 Marjorie passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the age of 86. Her death leaves all of us who loved her bereft and saddened, but we are comforted when we think of the very full life she led and how many lives she enriched. Marjorie Georgina was born in Medicine Hat, AB on December 24, 1921, though her father George Thompson moved the family to Red Deer when she was quite young. After graduating from Sacred Heart Convent in Red Deer, she took her teacher's training at Calgary Normal School and her first job was in the small school district of Carritt, AB. Marjorie met and fell in love with John Watson in Sylvan Lake, AB while he was covering the annual regatta for the Calgary Albertan. After their marriage and the birth of Grant and Jinny, she retired from teaching until they were in junior and senior high school. Marjorie then returned to the classroom in the late 1950's, teaching with the Calgary Separate School Board. From those days until her retirement in 1980, she touched the lives of thousands of students from grades one through six. Marjorie made lifelong friends, like fellow teacher Vikki Reid, who visited her regularly at the Bow View Nursing Home. Books and music also played a significant role in Marjorie's life. Because of her "catholic" taste, she was just as happy playing Chopin as she was banging out the "Marche Militaire" duet with her sister Virginia. Marjorie also wrote poems, short stories and plays for her family and friends to enjoy as well as research papers for the Calgary Literary Society. She was gifted with a wonderful sense of humour and everywhere she went she found a friend. So we add to the list of family who grieve, all the friends she made throughout her 86 years. The family also thanks the staff at the Bow View Manor for the love and kindness they showed Marjorie for every day of the four years she spent there. Marjorie is survived by her son Grant (Lorraine) of Calgary; daughter, Virginia (William) Watson-Rouslin of Saanich, BC and her husband, Robert Prieur of Calgary. Many nieces and nephews loved Marjorie and called her their friend as well as "Auntie". They include her namesake, Marjorie O'Connor (Patrick), Elizabeth Olson (Greg), Douglas (Johanna) and George (Irena) Darrah, all of Edmonton. These are the children of her beloved older sister Virginia, who predeceased her. On the other side of the family ledger were the Watsons. Marjorie's sister-in-law, Pamela Warkentin (David Sr.) was like a daughter to her and Pam's children, Nikki and David Jr. were also much loved by her. Her first husband John Watson predeceased her in 1979. Marjorie married Robert Prieur in 1984. KOTANEN, Ruth Mary Agnes 2008-01-22 Ruth Mary Agnes Kotanen, age 84 years, passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord on January 20, 2008 after a brief illness. Ruth is survived by her beloved children: son Elgin (Joanie), and daughters Earldine (Wayne) Wardell and Joy (Dwight) Listmayer. She also has three grandchildren, whom she called "my precious jewels", Alanna, Andrew and Amy Listmayer. Ruth is survived as well by her loving sister Faith Plouffe, sisters-in-law Adeline Kotanen and Eila Belrose and numerous nieces and nephews along with their families. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Harold of 62 years, her parents John and Katherine Belrose, and brother Jack Belrose. Ruth was born in Port Arthur in 1923 and lived in McIntyre all of her life. She was an extraordinary homemaker, a wonderful wife and mother and a loyal and devoted friend. Ruth was a committed follower of the Lord Jesus Christ for close to 80 years. She was active in the John Street Sunday School (later Laymen’s Gospel Chapel) for many years, teaching children about Jesus. More recently, she led the prayer chain at Elim Pentecostal Assembly where she was a faithful attendee. Though she will be missed by her family and many friends we rejoice that she is with the Lord. Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Kotanen will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. at Evangel Church, 1260 Balmoral Street. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. HARTLEY, Robert Harold June 23, 1926 - January 20, 2008 Born in Wolseley, Saskatchewan Bob Hartley of Longview, beloved husband of nineteen years to Lillian, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Sunday, January 20, 2008 at the age of 81. Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lillian; son John (Lorrie) of Okotoks and her children Christin (Geoff Woods) and James McComb of Calgary; daughter Heather (Simon) Holden of Spain; stepdaughter Denise Landeryou of Calgary; stepdaughter Lucia Landeryou and grandchildren Jesse and Sarah of Pincher Creek; his sister Margaret Lemieux of Alida, Saskatchewan and many other family members. KIRKHAM, Frances Joyce November 16, 1925 - January 18, 2008 On Friday, January 18, at the age of 82 years, Joyce passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. She is survived by her three loving daughters, Barbara (Brent) Bailey, Patricia (Dennis) Kirkham Peterson and Betty (Lonnie) Dunn; grandchildren, Colleen (Daniel), Neal, and Mason; and her sister Lillian MacDonald. Joyce was predeceased by Travis, her husband of fifty-four years, on September 29, 2006. WOUTERS, Walter Simon April 16, 1940 - January 19, 2008 Walter Wouters, beloved husband of Faye Wouters of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the age of 67 years. Walter was born on April 16, 1940 in Vancouver, BC but he grew up in Penticton and later Calgary. He married Faye on March 20, 1971. Walter worked with Burnco Rock Products for over eleven years and he made true friends there. He was a member of Teamsters Local 362 but his proudest achievement was being a great husband and father. Walter loved woodworking, hockey games and cooking. A favourite memory was the family ski trip to Sugarloaf, U.S.A. He was also particularly fond of his best friend Scamper. Besides his loving wife Faye, Walter is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Craig and Lisa of Calgary, Troy of Toronto; and three grandchildren, Marria, Meggan and Ryan Walter. He is also survived by his brother John David (Jack). Walter was predeceased by his parents Walter and Anna. A Joliette, le 22 janvier, à l’âge de 64 ans, est décédée Mme Aline Dupuis, épouse de feu Guy Ager de Joliette. La défunte laisse dans le deuil ses fils : Stéphane, Mario conjoint de Claudine Coutu et Diego conjoint de Nathalie Gauthier, ses petits-fils William Alexander et Christopher James, ses frères et sœurs ; Ivano, Nicole, Étienne, Donatien, Colette et Martial, ainsi que leurs conjoints et conjointes, autres parents et amis.
