Daughter-in- Law to Frank Panton and Shirley Blair both of Brantford. STEEVES, JEAN LILLIAN - Jean Lillian Steeves 97, our dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt passed away peacefully on Saturday January 19, 2008 with her loving family by her side at Protem Health Services in Moncton. Born in Canobie, Jean was the daughter of the late John and Gertrude (Rosengren) Sealy. Jean graduated from Success Business College and worked for the T. Eaton Company in Moncton for nine years. Her married life was devoted to supporting her husband in his business as a building contractor (S. H. Steeves and Son) and to her family as well as her greater church family at Highfield Baptist where she has been a member for 75 years. Jean spent her life being concerned for the well being of others who benefited by receiving a few cookies, a loaf of "Nanny's good bread", a batch of "Grampie's yummy fudge" or a bottle of her pickles or jam. She was involved in many church activities at Highfield including, being a Dominion Life Member of the WMS, a member of the Sunshine Class and the Young at Heart. She spent many hours volunteering her time for organizations such as the CGIT, Don Steeves Memorial School, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross and Spencer Nursing Home. Jean leaves to mourn her loving and devoted husband of 65 years, John Steeves as well as her daughter, Elaine Smith (Allan) of Sackville and her son, Eric (Janet) of Moncton; four granddaughters, Krista Bernard (Joel) of Vancouver, Heather Dacey (Mark) of Halifax, Amy Lavers (Matthew) of Truro, and Jill of Moncton; five special great-grandchildren who always brought a smile to Nanny's face, Kaitlyn and Emily Bernard, Tye and Carter Dacey and Noah Lavers. Also left to mourn is Jean's brother, Andrew Sealy (Peggy); sister-in-law Willa Sealy; sister-in-law, Margaret Whitely (Jim); as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Opal, Neva, Velma and Eda; brother, Ronald; nephew, Jack. Helen Humphries died peacefully at her home in Penetanguishene, with her husband by her side, on January 9, 2008. She was in her sixty-fourth year. Mrs. Humphries is survived by her husband Wayne Humphries; children Debra Potvin (husband James) and Deanna Graham (husband Bert); grandchildren Jake, Reuben and Angus (Gus) Graham, Damien, Julia and Linsday Callon. A funeral service was held in the chapel of the Penetanguishene Funeral Home on January 12. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

HANEWICH, Pauline Agnes December 3, 1915 - January 20, 2008 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend Pauline at the age of 92 years. Pauline was born in Benton, Alberta, the fifth child of eleven children born to Wasyl and Mary Hanewich. She received her education at Lonely Trail and Suburba Schools, and thereafter worked at various jobs in the Benton-Oyen area. Pauline moved to Calgary in 1942, at the age of twenty-seven and worked as a housekeeper. In 1944 she began working at Burns Meat Packers where she worked until her retirement. Pauline was a caring and giving lady and she enjoyed life. She especially enjoyed spending time with her siblings and their families. She often spent her vacations back home in Benton helping her mother and father on the farm. Pauline loved music and loved to dance. She enjoyed picnics at Bowness Park, camping and puttering in her vegetable garden. Pauline vacationed in Hawaii and enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and Disneyland. Her most memorable trip was to The Holy Land. Later in life Pauline took part in many Seniors Events at the Golden Age Club, and also with the Seniors of Huntington Hills. She especially enjoyed Stampede Breakfasts and the lively entertainment. Pauline very seldom missed a family gathering. She loved to cook and loved to have family and friends to her home, and never did a guest leave hungry. Pauline loved her Lord, and faithfully attended Saint Anne's Catholic Church while living in Ramsay. After moving to Huntington Hills in 1972 she attended Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Pauline is predeceased by her parents, Wasyl and Mary; brother John Hanewich and sisters Caroline Caouette, Wilma Dingwall, Pearl Wiencewicz and Catherine Sugden. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Elie and Zelma Hanewich of Medicine Hat; sisters Doris Lees of Edmonton; Annie Diemert, Marie Busby and Beatrice Siegel, all of Calgary, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. We thank you Pauline for all you gave as you shared your life with us. May you now rest in peace. We would like to thank Dr. Wayne Hoy for his compassionate care and kindness shown to Pauline over the last many years. Thanks also to the nurses in Unit 44 of the Peter Lougheed for the wonderful care given to Pauline. ELLIOTT, Bruce Leroy - 1918 - 2008, It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bruce Elliott, beloved husband and father, who passed away in his home, in his 90th year, in Sudbury on Sat. Jan. 19, 2008. Bruce will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 51 years Sigrid, and remembered lovingly in the hearts of his four children: Debbie Elliott-Gaumond (Allan Gaumond) of Sudbury, Kim Elliott of Burlington, Richard Elliott (Glenys) of Aurora and Sherry Elliott (Bob Vukovich) of Burlington. Bruce had 3 brothers, who he cared deeply for: Ross Elliott of Port Hope, Jack Elliott of Peterborough and the late Mack Elliott of Welland. He was a proud grandfather to 10 grandchildren: Darryl and Samantha; Mack, Emma and Jackson; Connor, and Taralyn; Brandon, Erica and Sarah. Bruce lived a long and accomplished life. He was born and raised in Port Hope, Ontario, by his father John and devoted mother Flora. He went on to serve in WWII as a Lieutenant and Regimental Intelligence Officer. He was passionate about education and earned two masters degrees in History and in Spanish. He spoke and wrote 5 languages fluently. He went on to become Principal of Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School in Sudbury in 1963 and respectably held that position for 20 years. Bruce was a lover of nature and on his days off from work and throughout his retirement, he spent quality time at his farm, often riding his tractor. In his retirement, Bruce avidly explored languages and published several papers proving that commonalities exist between many languages, pointing to a common origin. Bruce was a highly intelligent and caring man and we will always remember him with great respect, love and admiration. Irwin, John After a full and accomplished Life, in his 93rd year, John Irwin died on Sunday, January 20, 2008. His presence and spirit will live on with his devoted family and many friends. Born in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England, in 1915, John was raised on Walney Island, on the southern coast of Cumbria. He began a career in journalism with The Northwestern Daily Mail and later with the New Statesman in Calcutta where he was chief reporter. In World War II, he served as a lieutenant-colonel in army intelligence in North Africa. Upon his arrival in Canada in 1952, John resumed his career in journalism, first with Saturday Night magazine, then with Maclean's and finally as associate editor with the Financial Post. He Married Norah Joslin Brown in 1955. Together they enjoyed a loving and eventful 40 years of marriage. Norah died in 2006. Both Norah and John were lifetime supporters of the arts. As such, John served as president and became a life member of the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto. He was also president of the St. George's Society, and a member of the Royal Commonwealth Society, the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem and the Royal Canadian Military Institute, Imperial Officers Association of Canada and the 78th Fraser Highlanders. In1967 he received Canada's Centennial medal. He is survived by his sister, Kathleen (Kate) Humphreys, and his nephew Keith Humphreys and family in Newcastle, England. REID, Jason Allan - Passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness at the P.R.H.C., Hospital Dr. site on Sunday January 20, 2008. Jason Reid of Lakefield in his 29th year. Sadly missed by his parents Ron & Joanne Reid and his sister Lisa Reid (Jeff Milne), all of Lakefield. Lovingly remembered by his grandparents Dave & Phyllis Hamilton, John & Linda Dunford, and his great grandmother Marguerite Hamilton. Also remembered by his aunts, uncles and close cousins. HARDING, FRANCIS LEO - The death of Francis Leo "Frank" Harding of Saint John, NB, husband of Elma (McTavish) Harding, occurred on Sunday, January 20, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on June 18, 1931, a son of the late Charles and Hilda (Bizley) Harding. Francis had been employed with the City of Saint John Fire Department, retiring as Lieutenant after thirty-one years of service. He was a member of the IAFF Local 771. Besides his family, the love of his life was the cottage at Iona, PEI. Survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Elma; his daughter, Mary Harding and his two sons, John (Donna) and Andrew (Sandy), all of Saint John; five grandchildren, Rebecca, Eric, Nicholas, Allyson and Jack; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by three brothers and two sisters, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424 with visiting on Monday from 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. SCOBIE, Donald Thomas - March 8, 1990 - December 30, 2007 Donald Thomas Scobie passed away suddenly in his sleep on Sunday, December 30, 2007 at the age of 17 years while on a family ski holiday in Silver Star, BC. Donald was born in Calgary on March 8, 1990 and in 1998 he moved with his family to Doha, in the State of Qatar, where they lived for six years. While there, he studied at the Doha English Speaking School, and later at the American School of Doha where he excelled in sports and academics, winning numerous awards including the President's Award for Academic Achievement. From his base in Doha, Donald travelled the world with his family and with school groups. Upon his return to Calgary in 2004, Donald spent one year at Elboya Junior High School, and thereafter attended grades 10 and 11 at Brentwood College in Mill Bay, BC. While at Brentwood, Donald won many awards for academic, athletic and artistic achievement, consistently making the honour roll. In September of 2007, Donald made a return to schooling in Calgary, and was attending grade 12 at Western Canada High School at the time of his passing. Donald had a great love of the outdoors, snow skiing, water skiing, white water kayaking, motor-boating, diving, squash, painting, sculpture, playing guitar, pre-2000 rock music, electronics, cooking, his friends, his dog Russell, and the family cottage in Ontario. While often mischievous, Donald displayed a quick intelligence, wit and compassion for others. He was an extremely gifted young man who had enormous potential to help make the world a better place. Donald will be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him. Donald will be lovingly remembered by his parents Jeffrey and Margaret; his two sisters, Carolyn and Susan; grandparents, Marion Booth, and Wallace and Margery MacInnes; aunts and uncles, Kathleen and Mark Henderson; Kathleen and Ron Koper; Susan Scobie and Neill Cumberbirch; and John and Dawn MacInnes; and by his cousins, Alison and Nicholas Koper; Baine MacInnes; and Michael, Graham and Sarah Henderson. He was predeceased by his grandfather Dr. D. H. Scobie, MD, FRCS(C) and his step-grandfather Harry Booth. HOYT, RICHARD (June 23, 1927 - January 18, 2008) - At Fairview Lodge, Whitby, Ontario, Richard passed away in his 81st year. Survived by his wife, Phyllis; and daughters, Lynne Valin (Barry), Nancy Hoyt (Raymond Fox), Elaine (William) MacDonald. Beloved grand-dad of Jason (Aimee), Ashley (Ian), Amy (Scott), Samantha, Nicholas, Sigourney, Vanessa, Courtenay, Alexandra; and great-grand-dad of Zoe and Abigail. Also survived by one brother, Robert of St. John, NB; uncle, Jim Waycott (Grace) of Fredericton, NB; aunt, Marguerite Spinney of St. George, NB. Born in St. George, NB., Veteran of WWII with a career that spanned positions with both Ontario Hydro and the Federal Government. Retired in Halifax, NS in 1982. POSTMA, John June 11, 1942 - January 18, 2008 After a courageous battle with kidney cancer, John quietly slipped away at home with his loving wife and daughters by his side. Over the past several months, John was overwhelmed by the amount of love and support of his family and many close friends who embraced him and his dedicated wife who was adamant he be at home where he was happiest. Keeping his memories alive is his soulmate and wife of forty-two years, Adrienne, and their devoted daughters, Karen and Janet, with husbands, John Power and Laval St. Germain and the grandchildren, Richard, Andrea and Eric. He also will be missed by his mother Jane Postma and two brothers, Martin (Mieke) and Peter (Charlotte), all from Ontario as well as many other family and close friends. John also leaves behind a garage full of retirement plans: his Goldwing, kayak, mountain bike, plenty of fishing rods and lures and numerous books on every subject. He got pleasure from the things that were all around him, especially his grandkids, who he took on hikes, fishing excursions, target shooting and most recently, to France. With every activity, there was a lesson on nature, safety, and interesting facts on history. He could sit and draw for hours with them or tell stories of wild adventures. He endured countless stories while they each fought for his attention. As time went on, we all watched him quietly suffer, but never once did he complain. He remained the gentle soul he always was, saying he had no bitter feelings or regrets, and that he would never trade his 65 fulfilling years for anything. He focused on giving thanks for the gifts he had been given and was never afraid. He kept his one-of-a-kind wit and added his little known facts to anyone who would listen. Anyone who knew John would say what a good man he was, which was evident in his commitment to serve in church, as an elder and more recently in the Stephen Ministry, being a significant support to others. He left us too early; we were not done with him yet, but we feel comfort in knowing God has a special place picked out for him. John's family sends out a special thanks to all of our friends and Dr. Anker and the nurses on Unit 74 at Rockyview Hospital as well as Nurse Barbara and the palliative care team and the caregivers at We-Care. John's Memorial Service will be on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Christian Reformed Church at 3020 - 51 Street S.W., Calgary.
