PAQUETTE, Léo (1927-2007) - Passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, December 29th, 2007 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital Laurentian Site after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Son of the late Joseph and of the late Béatrice (née Blais) Paquette. Predeceased by his loving wife Fernande “Verna” (née St-Denis) in 2006. Loving and cherished father of Michelle, Claude (predeceased), Guy (friend Kathleen), Marc (Karen), Pierre (Annette) and special dad to his first grandchild Natalie (Shawn Frappier) all of Sudbury. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Stuart, Glenn, Shiayanne, Joël, Mathieu, Lyanne, Danielle, Gabrielle, Madison and Cohen. Dear brother of Rodolphe (Alice), Rollande Eaton (friend René Dionne) all of Sudbury and Huguette Roy of Montréal. Predeceased by his brothers Dr. Cérile and Paul (Hélène of Sudbury) and by his sister Claire Gravelle (late Gaston). Sadly missed by his many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Léo was a proud citizen of Sudbury, a member of the “Richelieu“ and a “Chevalier de Colomb“. His greatest accomplishment was his family. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren. Founder and operator of Bull Industrial Supply, Léo worked hard everyday to ensure the quality and consistency of his “Shop”. He was at his happiest when surrounded by family and friends at his “paradis” on lake Nipissing in Lavigne. A man of strong faith and charitable by nature, Léo would always remind his children to “Thank God for keeping him healthy enough to work” and shared his success with those less fortunate. With admirable humility, Léo helped many families by providing means to education and housing without ever expecting a thank you. All he asked is that people “pay it forward” and share their good fortune with others. A special thank you to all the staff at the Palliative Care Unit at Laurentian Hospital. GATHERCOLE, Franklin (Frank) Samuel April 28, 1927 - December 28, 2007 Franklin (Frank) Samuel Gathercole, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 28, 2007 at the age of 80 years. Frank leaves to mourn his loving wife of fifty-two years Terry; his son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Linda; two daughters and one son-in-law, Cathy and Terry, and Rhonda; his grandchildren Russell, Karlea and Chelsea. He is also survived by his brothers, Jim (Fay), and Don (Wilma); sisters Lil (Herb) and Evelyn (Renee); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by his brothers George (Zoe), Tom, Bob (Georgie) and Les (Audrey); and his sisters Grace and Fran (Ron). Frank was born on April 28, 1927 in Kerrobert, SK to Walter and Grace Gathercole. He was an honourary member of the Probus Club of Calgary, acting Master of King Solomon Lodge in Cochrane, and Past District Deputy Grand Master. As a member of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, he was Past Thrice Puissant Grand Master, Past Commander in Chief and earned his 33rd degree - Charter Member of the Springbank Lions Club and Springbank Heritage Club. Frank owned and operated the Bottrel General Store, Pre Pak Meats of Calgary Ltd. and Intertherm Services Ltd. Michel était un être exceptionnel, d'une générosité légendaire, travailleur et extrêmement dévoué. Il aimait ses enfants, Brad et Heather Zipkin, Jodi Zipkin et Stacy et Barry Gurman et il était pour eux un ami fidèle. Ses petits-enfants Jordan, Sam, Lauren, Rachel, Justin et Aaron l'appelaient affectueusement Papa. McNEIL, Mary Louise (Mary Lou) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Lou early in the morning of December 29, 2007. She is predeceased by her husband Dr. Donald McNeil. She is survived by her children: Susan (John Finlayson, Maple Bay, BC), Marilyn (Henry Byzinski, West Long Branch, New Jersey), Dr. Don Jr. (Trudy, Columbus, Ohio) and Laurie (Gavin Duke, Red Deer, AB). Lovingly remembering Grandma are eleven grandchildren: Jason Finlayson and Leanne Baird (nee Finlayson), Tasha and Derek Byzinski; Bradley, Graham, Devon and Kaelyn McNeil; Carlie, Lisa and Christopher Duke, and two great-grandchildren, Mathew and Brooklyne Baird. Mary Lou was born on August 29, 1920 in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. She was a proud graduate of the Holy Cross Nursing program in Calgary, Alberta. After raising their family and supporting Don's medical career in Calgary, Alberta, Mary Lou and Don happily retired to Victoria in 1984. Mary Lou's talent for letter writing was exemplified in her documentation of the wonderful trips she enjoyed with her husband. She was a volunteer extraordinaire, and a consummate hostess who made everyone feel welcome. Her kindness and warmth was without comparison. HANLEY, BLANCHE HELEN - With great sadness we wish to inform her loved ones and friends of the passing of our dear mother, Blanche Helen (Feran) Hanley, daughter of the late Frederick J. MARCHAND, Cynthia Sue - In loving memory of Cynthia Sue Marchand (Lown), 59, who passed away peacefully at her home in St. Catharines, surrounded by her loved ones and pets on Tuesday, December 25th. Cynthia courageously and fearlessly battled breast cancer for nearly seven years. Her children and grandchildren were the centre of her universe. She shared an amazing connection to people and nature. She was dedicated to helping others. Even as she underwent weekly chemotherapy treatments this past year, she organized a charitable event, “Operation Africa“, with her friend, Dr. Kwame Donkor, to raise money to build a library for a small village in Africa. She was so proud to be a part of such a wonderful cause. Kwame will be making the trip to Africa to present the funds raised with a memorial photo and plaque in Cynthia's honour later this January. Cynthia was born in Fort Erie on December 15, 1948, daughter of the late Arthur and Ethelyn Lown. Cynthia realized her dream of seeing much of the world, through one of her passions - travel. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, India and Asia. She lived many years in Niagara-on-the Lake and was very active in the community. Cynthia always had something lovely to say or wisdom to impart to anyone who entered her life. Cynthia was devoted to growing as a person and helping others find the beauty in themselves. She was an early teacher of Transcendental Meditation and was a direct student of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Later in her life she was introduced to Five Elements Chi Kung and Kung Fu and was a long time student and friend of Sifu Gilberto in Niagara Falls. Surviving Cynthia are her daughter Vanessa; her son Drew; son-in-law Chris; grand children Avery and Nevyn; her former husband and dear friend Jean; her three brothers Gilbert, Glen, William, her sister Cheryl and their families. She will be sadly missed and eternally loved by all of us. In respecting Cynthia's wishes, no funeral or memorial arrangements have been made. Expressions of sympathy and condolences can be directed in the form of donations to the Marchand Kruczynski Family Fund. The fund was established in Cynthia's honour in 2006 by Vanessa, Drew, Jean and Chris. The mandate of the fund is to support breast cancer research, education and alternative treatments. TEED, GEORGE F. - The death of George F. Teed occurred on Sunday, December 30, 2007. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1915, he was the son of J.F.H. Teed and Muriel V. (Wetmore) Teed, and was predeceased by his wife of 53 years Janice D. (Harrison) Teed. George lived life to the fullest in his community, even during his later years. He was an active member and leader of many organizations including, St. Paul's (Valley) Church Choir and Vestry, Trinity Church Choir, St. Andrew's Curling Club, Rothesay Tennis Club, RKYC, The Armouries Badminton Club, YMCA, St. George's Society, NB Branch of the Loyalist Association of Canada, Saint John Historical Society, Saint John General Hospital Board of Directors, RCS, Old Boys Association, Rothesay Playhouse, Fundy Frolics, Saint John Theatre Group, KV Players, NB Symphony, Dance Club, and Choral Groups including most recently The Carleton Choristers. He attended Winter Street School, graduated from Rothesay Collegiate School (RCS) and attended the University of Kings College in Halifax. George began his career working for W. Pittfield, T. McAvity & Sons, Red Rose Tea and Canada Veneers, before going into business for himself. He owned and operated various businesses over the years in wholesale lumber, fishing and agriculture, housing construction, building products and hotel management. He opened the first car rental company in Saint John. George thoroughly enjoyed his friends, of whom he had many. He was a very positive and sociable person. He will be missed by his many friends of all ages and from many walks of life. He is survived by his six children, Margot Burke (Donald) of Dartmouth, Janice Willis (Raymond) of Saint John, John Teed (Patricia) of Rothesay, George Teed (Valerie) of Rothesay, Brian (Butch) Teed (Sandy Hatfield) of Rothesay, and Bill Teed (Stephanie) of Rothesay; his sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Mary Gillis and Gloria Trivett; and brothers, Eric Teed and Hugh Teed. SMITH, Sean Michael July 30, 1979 - December 28, 2007 Sean Michael Smith, beloved son of Dorothy and Rich, dearly loved brother of Ben and Kaity, of Airdrie passed away suddenly in an industrial accident at an oil rig site near Waterton Lakes National Park. Sean was full of life, full of dreams, and a keeper of endless lists. He blessed us with his kindness, sense of humour, generosity and free spirit. Sean loved family and friends, music, sports, food, and lively discussions. He was a gifted writer, a good athlete, a bad navigator, a skilled and ardent debater, and most of all, a warm and loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. Sean possessed both strong inertia and powerful momentum. He was slow to start new activities, but able to achieve great things when he set his mind to them. Sean was a graduate of George McDougall High School in Airdrie and Carleton University in Ottawa. He was proud to have completed his first Olympic length triathlon last spring and was working to save money to pursue his goal of becoming a lawyer. He had travelled to Europe for the 2006 Winter Olympics and greatly enjoyed a fantasy sports trip to Denver this fall where he saw the Avalanche, Nuggets and his beloved Broncos. Sean always followed his heart and the golden rule on his journey through life. His life was way too short, but he lived it fully and we feel fortunate to have felt his love. Besides leaving a huge hole in our hearts and lives, Sean was loved and will be missed by his grandparents, Chad and Roberta Kirby; Boone and Margie, Kathy and Bob, Robert and Linda, Cathy, Murray and Katherine, Steve and Rona, Angie and Cam, David, Danny, Mike, Kailey, Mac, Evan, Gordon, Kirsten, Allison, and Keegan, the uncle, aunts, and cousins to whom he was a wonderful oldest nephew and cousin; Kim and many friends. He also brought great joy to his Grumpa John and Grandma Norma while they were alive. LAING, Bernard J. Bernard J. Laing went to join his Lord and Savior on December 28, 2007. He was the loving husband of Joan Laing. Bernie is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Terry (Bill) Negenman, Glenda Wenger, Tracy (Garry) Mauch; Sherry Henrickson; Robyn (Rick) Andrews; Wendy (John) Westlake; Kellie (Jim) Krueger, Gaylene (Paul) Barry, and many amazing grandchildren and great-grandchildren. TOST, Mathilda Beloved partner of Joseph Surjan of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on December 25, 2007, at the age of 78 years. Mathilda will be lovingly remembered by her children: Wilfred, Helga, Anthony, Raymond, Marlene, David, Eddie and Joe; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters and numerous other family members and friends. She was predeceased by her son Warner. BOCCHICCHIO, Filomena - Peacefully in the presence of her family Filomena passed away at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Sunday December 30, 2007 in her 84th year. Beloved wife of Serafino, proud mother of Paul Bocchicchio and Mary (her husband John) Pagliacci. Loving grandmother of John Nicholas Pagliacci and Daniel Pagliacci. Also survived by her sister Antonietta (her husband Mario) Gesualdi, niece Maria (her husband Tony) Rainone, nephew Carlo Gesualdi and her extended family and friends.
