SALMINEN- Pirkko Salminen (nee Kopra) - Passed away peacefully at the Espanola Nursing Home on December 24th, 2007 in her 90th year. Formerly of Beaver Lake she was the beloved wife of William (Bill) Salminen (predeceased 1997).Pirkko and Bill enjoyed their many years in Beaver Lake and spent countless hours in the outdoors, fishing, skiing and gardening. She was an active member of the Beaver Lake Sports and Cultural Association and loved attending their Finnish pancake breakfasts and visiting with friends in the community. Loving daughter of Ellen and Tom Kopra (both predeceased). Dear Aunt of Mayra Boudens (Bill) of Pembroke, Elmer Salminen (Rita) of Whitefish, Ewasyke (predeceased). Dear aunt of many nieces and nephews. Very dear friend and neighbor of Diane and Ron Rancourt of Beaver Lake. At Pirkko's request, there will be no visitation or funeral. FERNAND COTE 1930-2007 The family announces with great sorrow his passing at the Sudbury General Hospital on Sunday, December 23, 2007 at the age of 77 years. Beloved husband of Anita Page of Timmins and loving father of Marc of Timmins and Daniel of Sudbury. Dear grandfather of Leisha DeMatos (Richard) of London and great-grandchildren Angela and Riley DeMatos. Also survived by his brother Maurice and sisters Claire Dumont, Raymonne Rivers (Clifford), and Rita Mageau (Gordon) all of Timmins. Predeceased by his parents Emile & Jeanne (Desjardins) Côté. Fern was with the fire department for 33 years, first as a Firefighter then promoted to Fire Prevention Officer. With other firefighters in the 1970s, Fern flew to Fort Albany as Santa to bring thousands of toys to the Native children. A hockey player in his youth and later a hockey coach, he also played fastball for the Timmins Smoke Eaters. An avid gardener, Fern was for several years a member of the Timmins Horticultural Society and won many awards for his gardening. He was an active bowler. He loved the outdoors and fishing and spent much time at the cottage, especially trekking around in his red four-wheeler. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the Miron-Wilson Chapel (Fr. Maurice Magnan officiating). Interment at Timmins Memorial Cemetery. Remembrance donations to the Timmins & District Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. SCOTT, Margaret Grace Barlow (Sheppard) - The family announces with sorrow her death in Sudbury on Saturday, December 22, 2007, at the age of 89. Born in Sudbury, daughter of Hugh and Mary Barlow (predeceased), she was the last of six brothers and four sisters. She was the loving wife of Tom Sheppard (predeceased 1965) and Jack Scott (predeceased 1990). Cherished mother of Tom (Sally), Don (Nancy), Harvey (Claire), the late Robert (Kim), and the late Harriet (John Goode). She was also predeceased by 2 lovely granddaughters, Denise Sheppard and Lorie Sheppard. She was “Nannie“ to 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, with the addition of 1 more great great grandchild and 2 great granddaughters of whom one will carry her name. Marg and Tom raised their family in Falconbridge where she was an active curler, bowler and weekly card player with “the girls“. Many fun-filled days were spent at Nelson Lake with family. She loved to dance with Tom and will be well remember for her “hula dance“. Well know for sharing her pecan pies, shortbread cookies, Christmas fruit cakes and mincemeat tarts made from her mother's old English recipes. Loved for her enthusiastic and fun-loving nature, Marg will be deeply missed by family and friends, especially Reverend Ann and her church family at the Church of the Ascension, her friends at Spruce Villa and more recently, her new friends at The Westmount Retirement Residence. Memorial Service in the Church of the Ascension 1476 Sparks St., Saturday, December 29th, 2007 at 2 pm. Interment in the Parklawn Cemetery. MARTIN, Ora Marie (nee Cameron/Cumming) - Passed away peacefully after a long illness on December 20, 2007 at Laurentian Hospital in Sudbury, Ontario. Ora was born February 16, 1929 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. She moved to Capreol, Ontario in 1952 where she worked as a school teacher at CR Judd Elementary School in Capreol, Ontario. She retired with the Sudbury Board of Education in 1987, after 35 years. Ora joined Vermillion Rebekah Lodge #289 in 1962 where she was the past Noble Grand and Deputy District President. She was also a member of the Trinity United Church. Ora was an avid curler and golfer who also enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and playing on the computer. Ora is predeceased by her father, Owen Kennedy Cameron of Big Island, Nova Scotia (deceased in 1950); her mother Bessie May Callaghan of Port Shorem, Nova Scotia (deceased 1973); her brother John Edward Cameron (deceased 1988) of Big Island, Nova Scotia and his wife Agnes, her sister Helen Agusta Fraser (deceased in 1998) of Hopewell, Nova Scotia and her sister's husband Weldon (deceased in 1992). Ora is also predeceased by her first husband George Arnold Cumming (deceased in 1974), of Piedmont, Nova Scotia and her son Lawrence Edward Cumming (deceased in 1981). Ora is survived by her husband Norman Martin of Carpeol, her son Gerald Richard Cumming of Capreol and his wife Louise, step-mother to Shelley (husband Peter Fiset) of Sudbury, Judy (husband Danny Cormier) of Elk Lake, and Candice (husband Lawrence Johnston) of Vernon, B.C., grandson Andrew George Cumming of Toronto, granddaughter Carol Ann Cumming of Toronto, granddaughter Tina Anne Marie Cumming of Toronto, great-grandson Kevin James Cumming of Toronto, step-grandchildren Paul and Julie. Loving sister-in-law of Catherine (husband Dave Watson) of Thedford, Ontario and various nephews and nieces. Ora was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Predeceased by her sons Marcel (Maria of Kingston) and Jean. Dear sister of René (late Lucienne) of Chelmsford and Thérèse Dubois (Florian) of Sudbury. Predeceased by her brothers Denis, Donat (late Helen), Anisia Castonguay (late Philias) and Leo. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Gilles, Natalie, Brian, Richard, Chantal, Joël, Michelle, Francine, Cassandra and by her great-grandchildren, Alexandre, Stephanie, Alexander, Bradley, Kaleigh, Katherine and Anna. Born in Italy, he came to Canada in 1951. Gino worked as a miner at INCO for 33 years, and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Faith. ALPINE, Elizabeth (nee Tabaka) - Peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, Elizabeth Alpine passed away December 17, 2007 at Fisherman's Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia at the age of 75. Loving mother of Mary Lee (Petey) and husband Robin Barton of Corunna, Ontario, Lynn and husband John Gillard of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. She will be dearly missed by her three grandchildren Sherri, Candace, and Christopher Barton. Survived by her sister Mary Ralbosky and her sister-in-law Margaret Ann Tabaka. Pre-deceased by her parents, Martha and Peter Tabaka, her beloved brother Joseph Tabaka, dear brother-in-law Joseph Ralbosky, and her husband John (Bud) Alpine. THORNLEY, Dorothy - In her 86th year, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2007 at L.H.S.C. University Campus, London. Beloved wife, soul mate, travelling companion and dancing partner, squares and rounds for over 65 years of married life with her husband Stanley. Born in Chichester, Sussex, England in 1922 she served her country during WWII in the Women's Land Army, and 4 years as an inspector in the Metrology Department of the De Havilland Aircraft Company at Lostock, Bolton Lancashire. She emigrated to Canada in 1948 and resided in Brantford for 53 years, being a member and regular attendee of St. Luke's, St. James and St. Mark's Anglican Churches and serving in many capacities. Residing in London since 2001 she has been a member of St. Martin in the Fields Anglican Church. Dorothy will be sadly missed by her husband Stan, sons Stewart (Nancy), Jan (Mary Anne), Christopher and partner Michael, who were all deeply loved by Dorothy and who held her dearly in their hearts with true admiration and affection. She was very proud of her grandchildren, Shelby, Reid (Laurie), Matthew, Harris (April) and great- grandchildren Brandon, Luke, Jack and Faye. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their families in England and Canada. As per Dorothy's wishes, her cremation and committal service will be under the direction of the Rev. CHAMBERS, Robert (Bob) Ingram - aged 70 and formerly of Chatham, died Nov. 30 of an apparent heart attack at his home in St. Augustine, Fla., the community where he had been living for the last 25 years. Born in Winnipeg, Man., Nov. 28, 1937, he was the only son and eldest child of Clair L. and J. Estelle (Ingram) Chambers, who were also former Chatham residents. During his years in St. Augustine, Bob parlayed an outgoing personality, a quick, observant mind, and a gift for the visual arts into ECM Video Productions, a company he built from the ground up. In serving the local real estate and tourism industries as well as other commercial interests, he became well known and widely respected for the excellence of his work. A natural bonhomie allowed him to make friends easily. His formative years were spent in Winnipeg, Sudbury, Kirkland Lake, Moncton, and finally Halifax, where he rode as a member of the Halifax Junior Bengal Lancers, graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School and attended Dalhousie and Saint Mary's universities. The lure of the pool hall and other youthful distractions, however, set him on a non-academic path that eventually led to careers in broadcasting and video production. He got his start in radio in1962 at CFCO in Chatham, where he worked in advertising. From there he went to the United States, and joined a station in Columbus, Ohio. He married in 1971 and returned to Canada in 1972, bringing his young family to Toronto, where he worked briefly in photography and for a local radio station before going back to the United States in 1974. A number of station manager positions followed in places such as Thomson, Ga., and Statesville, Spartanburg, and Eden, N.C. In each venue he took stations that were in the red and brought them into the black. But the industry had changed; at the first sign of profit, new- style owners, with an eye on better investments, were eager to sell. So he switched gears in the 1980s and went to St. Augustine. There he worked as a tour guide and then as owner-operator of The Pelican Pub. He later used proceeds from the pub's sale to start his video company, for which he did all the shooting, scripting, narrating, editing and production. In all aspects of the business he was self-taught. While he lived most of his life in the United States, he proudly retained his Canadian citizenship. Other constants included a love of photography, music, and animals - especially dogs. In his youth, he was an enthusiastic guitar player and he occasionally performed with friends in a few nightspots. At his death, he was sharing his home with four dogs. He is survived by his wife of seven years, Sharon, St. Augustine, Fla.; his daughter and only child, Kelley Robyn, from a previous marriage to Nancy (Thurston) Chambers, both of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) Clair, Halifax, N.S.; four first cousins: Leslie, Dartmouth, N.S.; Gordon, Victoria, B.C., and Thomas Cochrane and Patricia (Cochrane) Giera Siddall, both of Chatham, as well as long-time friend, Bob Smith, also of Chatham. Bob Chambers was predeceased by his parents in 2000. His body was cremated in St. Augustine. A memorial gathering of his friends will be held at his home, 1 p.m., Jan. 12, 2008. 10945307

BAKER, Charles (CB) Bertrum - At the age of 80 of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, passed away Sunday, December 23 at the QEII Health Science Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born in Parry Sound, ON, on April 23, 1927 he was the son of Alec and Irene (Kelly) Baker. He served on the Timmins Police Force from 1953 to the mid 1960's, when he began his employment with Ontario Hydro. He remained with Hydro working in the Toronto, Burlington and North Bay offices, until his retirement in 1992. In the last few years, Charlie was a tremendous help to his son, Rick, in his food business. He was a friend to many, always willing to offer a helping hand. He was an avid and proficient golfer. He (and his wife, Jane) faithfully followed the trials and triumphs of the Toronto Blue Jays. He had a keen sense of humour. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Jane Elizabeth (Wickham) Baker, two sons, Rick (Sandra) Baker of Lower Sackville, NS and Doug (Sara) Baker of Langley, BC, a brother Victor (Audrey) Baker of Barrie, ON, four grandchildren, Elisha, Dara, Emma and Meghan and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers; Francis and Michael, sisters; Madeline and Anna and nephew Bobby Young. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of Neurology Ward, 8.1 for their care and kindness. SWAINSON, Jacqueline Edith (nee Arnell) 1933 - 2007 Passed away on December 20, 2007 after a lengthy battle with cancer at the age of 74. She was born in Calgary on July 26, 1933. She lived as a child in the Cochrane, Alta. area and attended high school and technical training in Calgary. Jackie worked for various companies in her younger years and was employed by the City of Calgary, Law Dept. for eighteen years and retired from there in 1995. Jackie has left behind her loving companion, Don Estabrooks, Summerland, BC, her son Tim Kehoe (Carolyn), Winlaw, BC and grandsons, Denny Kehoe, Edmonton, Alta. and Joe Kehoe (Chantelle), Edmonton, Alta. She is also survived by two brothers Neil Arnell (Enid), Calgary and Ken Arnell, Maple Creek, Sask., three nieces, Karen Arnell, St. Catherines, Ont., Patty Arnell, Calgary, Alta. and Tracy Arnell, Edmonton, Alta. as well as three nephews Dale Arnell, Douglas Lake, BC, Peter Arnell, Cochrane, Alta., Keith Arnell, Calgary, Alta. SCOTT, Tom Foster June 25, 1923 - December 25, 2007 Tom Scott, beloved husband of Yvonne (Tommy) passed away in Calgary on Christmas Day, 2007, at the age of 84 years, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Tom was a devoted and loving father and grandfather and will be fondly remembered by his children, Deborah (Lynn) of Toronto, ON, Ted (Jo-Ann) of Toronto, ON, Jennifer (Graham) of Calgary, AB, and Geoff (Michelle) of Burlington, ON; and by grandchildren, Hart and Cayley Lambur, Caroline, Ian and Katherine Scott, Liam and Riley Duff and Foster and Dustin Scott. Survived by his brother Peter of Vancouver, BC. Tom was born in Cumberland, BC. He graduated in Applied Science, as a mechanical engineer, from the University of British Columbia, in 1946. He was president of the University's graduating class in that year and won the Engineering Institute of Canada prize. After graduation, Tom headed east to work in various engineering capacities for CIL (later Dupont of Canada) in Montreal and Shawinigan, QC. While in Shawinigan, he met his beloved Tommy in nearby Trois Rivieres. They were married in 1952 and eventually settled in Beaconsfield, QC, where they formed many lifelong friendships. In 1971, intrigued at the potential of the oil sands and the prospect of taking his career in a new direction, Tom moved the family to Fort McMurray, where he managed engineering and maintenance for Great Canadian Oil Sands (GCOS), now a division of Suncor. This was followed by a move to Edmonton in 1973 to handle the assembly and marketing of GCOS's oil sands technology. In 1976, he moved to Calgary to join recently formed Petro-Canada, serving on the Syncrude Management Committee and on the Alsands Executive Committee, managing the Canstar Oil Sands Project, and finally before retirement in 1985, serving as Vice-President, Heavy Oil. In 1978, he was made a Life Member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta. Tom was an enthusiastic golfer and bridge player. He was a long term member of the Earl Grey Golf Club, where he regularly joined the "Hustlers", and had many dear friends. Tom's family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Chinook Hospice for their kind and considerate care of Tom. FERRIS, Francis Grant - October 31, 1940 - December 23, 2007. Passed away on Sunday December 23, 2007 at the Saugeen Memorial Hospital in Southampton. Francis (Grant) of Port Elgin was in his 68th year. Grant was an enthusiastic outdoorsman who worked diligently over his lifetime to protect and preserve the environment. One of his great loves was fishing on the Saugeen River where his motto was “catch and release“. Another love was motorcycles, and he spent many happy days riding his Gold Wing along county roads with his motorcycle buddies from Guelph. He was a proud member of the Grey Bruce Motorcycle Touring Club, Outdoor Writers of Canada, the Sydenham Sportsman Association, Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Lake Huron Fishing Club, Friends of MacGregor Point Provincial Park, Blue Ridge Sportman's Club, Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, co-founder and writer for the Grey/Bruce Outdoors Webpage, and many others. But his greatest love was for his family. He will be forever missed by his wife of 38 years, Gloria (Faryon), and his children Frank, Russ (Manie) of Milton, Lara Inneo (Vito) of Guelph, and Alyssa (Shawn MacPherson) of Cambridge. He was a proud and loving Papa to Olyvia Inneo and Talia Ferris. He is also survived by his dear sisters Dianne Doekes (Charles) and Donna Warner (Ralph), nephews Lee and Steve Cowtan, Daryl Warner, and nieces Cheryl Klimm and Jen Warner. Also surviving are the many lifelong friends he loved as brothers and sisters. He truly cherished them. Grant was predeceased by his parents Frank Cyril Ferris and Olive Ada Collingridge, and also an infant daughter, Jessica. Cremation has taken place and a private committal will take place at Woodland Cemetery, Guelph, at a later date. BRAY, Hubert “Hub“ - In loving memory of Hubert “Hub“ Bray, 60 years, who passed away at his home, with peace and serenity, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, December 21st, 2007. Tender hearted and loving husband of Lynne (Daly) Bray of Sudbury. Warm and compassionate father of Michelle Thiessen (husband Ben), Monique Whitmore (husband Justin), Daniel and John Michael Bray. Cherished grandfather and pepere of his special lads, Drake and Wyler. Dear son of Bill and Evelyn Bray both predeceased. Proud brother of Elaine Ettinger (husband Gordon), Neil (wife Lorraine), Gary (wife Edna), Sandra (husband Darcy Paquette), Maureen (husband Robert Konopelky) and Brenda Corrigan. He will be sadly missed by his many extended family and friends. Born in Coniston, he married the love of his life Lynne in Kitchener, in 1972. Hub was a prominent Sudbury lawyer, a partner in the firm of Lacroix Forest, he was well respected and admired for his skill and abilities within the legal profession. Hub was devoted to his family, always had time for his friends, maintained a “zany“ sense of humour about life and kept a rock solid faith with his God. He was an active member of Holy Redeemer Church where he played a key role on the building committee for the new church. Hub was a great community leader; serving as the President of the Sudbury Food Bank and with Childhood Enfance, through these important organizations he ensured that every hungry person in Sudbury received food, directly and positively effecting the lives of literally thousands of Sudburians. That same passion was used to fight cancer through his work at the Northern Cancer Research Fund. Hub enjoyed sports and was an avid outdoorsman, fishing and hunting on beautiful Lake Wahnapitae and on Manitoulin Island. He was a man of culture, he loved to travel and experience different countries and people of the world. Hub had a fine appreciation of food and “red“ wine, especially while sharing it with his beloved Italians. A special thanks to Dr. Bill McMullen and Dr. Pahlo Cano for their never ceasing dedication to Hub's well being. Born in Lappajarvi, Finland on August 5th, 1928. Loving husband of Alli (nee Lamminen) for 53 years. Loving son of Anna and Vaino Rantala (both predeceased). Since moving his young family from Finland to Northern Ontario in 1958, Eino worked in the Lumber Camps near Sultan, McIntyre Mine and INCO Creighton Mine where he retired in 1988 after 25 years of service. Eino was a skillful carpenter and could repair anything. He was very devoted to his family and to their well-being. West (Diane Payment) of Winnipeg and Fanny Leuenberger (Hansruedi) of Eglisau (Switzerland); cherished gross-mamy of Myriam and Nicole; special sister of Hans Leroy (Julia) of Post Falls (Idaho) and loving god-mother of Clélia Beck (Mauborget, Switzerland). Pre-deceased by her loving husband Dr. Roxroy O. West in 1991 and her elder brother, Roberto Alovisetti in 1990, she leaves relatives in Switzerland and Italy, a niece, Sara Leroy and two nephews, Max and Roberto Alovisetti in the United States and and sisters-in-law Lydia Alovisetti, of New York City, and Barbara Marshall and Doreen West of Trinidad. Born in Bex (Vaud, Switzerland) on November 20, 1919, daughter of Giovanni Tiboldo and Fanny Uhler, she immigrated to Canada with her husband and children in 1958 and was a long-time resident of Kingston. A strong, generous and enterprising woman, she was an avid gardener, professional seamstress and gourmet cook. Fluent in four languages, she made special friends among the Italian community in Kingston. Forever proud of her Swiss culture, she developed a special love for the Canadian landscape and her little paradise at Lacey Lake exploring with pals Caleb and Rerun. She travelled the world with her husband and in her later years, found inspiration and happiness in her many car trips across the country.
