ELLIOTT, Edith Vera (nee Killick) Elliott, Edith Vera - 94, born and raised in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, passed away on October 26, 2007, at Beaverbank, Nova Scotia. During her long life, and largely as the wife of a "CPR man", Vera lived in Rocky Mountain House, Victoria, Banff, Moose Jaw, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Kelowna, Stittsville and Halifax. Beloved wife of the late Donald Victor Elliott who predeceased her in February 1975. She is survived by her three daughters, Marjorie (Jim Gillick) of Stittsville, Ontario, Patricia (Dale Wishart) of Sackville, Nova Scotia, and Dianne Elliott (Doug Hunt) of Scarborough, Ontario; five grandchildren, Ryan and Janna Gillick and Rod, Greg and Brian Wishart; and four greatgrandchildren. Vera was predeceased by her parents, John H Killick and Ada B (Brown) Killick, sister Marjoried brothers Harold, Bernard and Gordon. TONNING, DR. HENRIK O. MD, FRCPC, FACP. - The death of Dr. Henrik O. Tonning, husband of the late, Wanda (Giberson) Tonning, of Saint John, NB, occurred at his residence on Saturday, October 27, 2007. Born in Stavanger, Norway on June 20, 1917, he was a son of the late Henrik F. and Olga (Jorstad) Tonning. Dr. Tonning immigrated to Blacks Harbour, NB with his family in 1929. He attended school in Blacks Harbour and subsequently went on to Dalhousie University where he obtained his Medical Degree in 1943. During his studies there he was awarded the Kellogg Foundation Scholarship and won a prize for the highest standing in Histology and Pathology. During the Second World War he enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps and served in Canada and Overseas as a captain in the Medical Corps until 1946. On his return to Canada he worked for a year at the D.V.A. Hospital, Lancaster, NB and carried on a private practice in Saint John. Thereafter, he proceeded on the postgraduate work in the Department of Pathology at the Banting Institute in Toronto, followed by clinical medicine research at the Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, the Lahey Clinic and the Mass. General Hospital, Boston, Mass. His studies at Mass. General Hospital were partially supported by a fellowship he received from the Canadian Arthritis Society. Dr. Tonning became a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1950, Certificant and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada a year later, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1966. He returned to his practice in Saint John in 1952 in the specialty of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and in 1956 he was appointed Head of the Department of Medicine at the Lancaster D.V.A. Hospital. In 1966 he was appointed Head of the Department of Medicine at the Saint John General Hospital. He took an active part in the planning of the current Saint John Regional Hospital. In 1971, his dedication and commitment to medical education helped the Regional Hospital in obtaining an affiliation with Dalhousie University for the integrated Intern and Residency Program. He served as the Chief of Medicine at the Saint John Regional Hospital until June 30,1982. Dr. Tonning was instrumental in establishing the first clinic in rheumatic diseases in 1952 through the cooperation of the New Brunswick Division of the Arthritis Society and the generosity St. Joseph's Hospital. Following retirement from the Saint John Regional Hospital, he then served as Deputy Director at the Canadian Red Cross Transfusion Service in Saint John until 1994. He was appointed as a Faculty Member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Student Honor Society, a member of the Canadian Medical Association, the New Brunswick Medical Association, the Canadian Arthritis Society, the Canadian Rheumatism Association, the American Rheumatism Association, the American College of Physicians, the Alumni Association of Lahey Clinic and the alumni of Harvard Medical School. He was an Associate and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Dalhousie University from 1954-1982. A listener, leader and visionary, he was respected for his administration skills and quiet diplomatic finesse. In 1982, his official retirement year, he was accorded the title, Man of the Year in Medicine by the Saint John Regional Hospital. Dr. Tonning's contribution to the development of specialty medical services in N.B. and his leadership in medical education in the Saint John area were further recognized when in 1994 the University of New Brunswick awarded him an honorary degree of Doctor of Science Honoris Causa. In the same year he also received a Regional Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons for his contributions to medicine in New Brunswick. In 1996 he was made a senior member of the Canadian Medical Society. In 2000, he was designated a Laureate by the American College of Physicians, Atlantic Region, being the first New Brunswick doctor to receive such an award. Less than a month ago, Dr. Tonning endowed a scholarship fund to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation to support new Brunswick students in their medical educational studies in this Province. This endowment continues his decade's long commitment to the establishment of an advanced medical educational facility in New Brunswick. Dr. Tonning was active in numerous professional associations and social groups throughout saint John and the Maritimes. He was an accomplished fly fisherman and loved cross-country skiing. Over the years he enjoyed curling, sailing and bird hunting. Married in 1944, Dr. Tonning was predeceased by his loving wife, Wanda Geraldine Giberson, RN from Bath, New Brunswick. Together with his wife, countless hours were spent enjoying the world of antiques. Their summer home and property on the Kingston Peninsula was one of their proudest treasures. Dr. and Mrs. Tonning were long standing members of the Anglican Church of Canada, Sharing and celebrating worship at both St. Paul's Valley Church and St. Paul's, Rothesay, NB. Dr. Tonning is survived by his two sons, Henrik (Jean) and Stephen; his three grandchildren, James (Amy), Kare and Henrik; one great-grandchild, Abigail; several nieces. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Daniel; and his sister, Elizabeth. BULLEN, Ronald Sydney March 24, 1938 - October 26, 2007 Ron Bullen, beloved son, father and grandfather passed away suddenly on Friday, October 26, 2007 at the age of 69 years. Ron had a real passion for life and lived it to the fullest. He was raised on the family farm in Alberta's Peace River Country. It was there he did his schooling through correspondence and won the Governor Generals Award for the top marks for his Provincial Grade Nine Exams. This would be only the first of several other awards which he would receive in his lifetime. Ron was a visionary in Alberta's oil industry as one of the Founders of Canadian Fracmaster. Ron was an accomplished pilot and one of his greatest joys was flying. If he was not in his plane, Ron liked to keep busy building treasures in his woodworking shop, tinkering at his cabin or playing bridge with good friends. Ron is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law, Derek and Susan Bullen, Brent and Dawn Bullen, Chris and Heather Bullen; seven grandchildren, Brittany, Tessa, Brayden, Morgan, Sydney, Stevahn, and Caelahn; extended family, James and Lisa Scott, Jeff and Tanya Morris and their children, Sierra, Kaya and Jules; mother Inez Bullen; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Dell Bullen; and sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Bob Grunewald. BROWN, GLENWOOD DARRELL The passing of Glenwood Darrell Brown, aged 78 occurred on Saturday, October 27th at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton. Born in Kingsclear NB, he was the son of the late Henry & Beatrice (Kelly) Brown. Baptist by faith, Glenwood was a skilled carpenter all his life. He previously served three years in the Engineering Corp. of the Canadian Armed Forces as well as being a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 4. Glenwood was an avid woodsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and picking fiddleheads when he got the chance. Survived by his wife of 56 years, Pauline (Kennedy) Brown; five sons, Darrel (Vickey) of Fredericton, Dana (Mary) of Smithfield, Danny (Tanya) of Mazerolle Settlement, Dean (Kim) of Salisbury & Dow (Sharon) of Mazerolle Settlement; two daughters, Donna Dunphy (Dale) of New Maryland, Darlene O'Donnell (Kirk) of Fredericton; two brothers, Norman (Irma) of Fredericton, Weyman (Grace) of Mazerolle Settlement; four sisters, Joyce Bennett of Fredericton, Arylene Thompson (Harold) of Fredericton, Gail McLellan of Dartmouth NS & Delma Whitney of British Columbia; 18 grandchildren; several nieces & nephews; as well as a special daughter in law, Debbie Campbell (Donnie). DEKKER, Krista Marie - Peacefully entered into the arms of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Friday, October 26th 2007 at the Chatham Kent Health Alliance surrounded by her loving family and friends at the age of 27. Krista courageously journeyed through Huntington's disease and was a teacher to us all. GLENCROSS, CHARLOTTE JEAN - Born May 5 1949 in Montreal, died October 26, 2007 in Fredericton, of cancer. Survived by her husband, Jon Thompson; her mother, Gwendolin Glencross; brother, Roderick Glencross; and sister-in-law, Penny Glencross. Charlotte was an accomplished artist in weaving, tapestry, water color, batik and ikat, well known for her extraordinary gifts in color, texture and conception, as well as for her fine skill and attention to detail. Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting), Concordia University, 1970; Bachelor of Arts (History), UNB, 1991; Diploma in Weaving, New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, 1976; Apprenticeships in Tapestry, Germany and France, 1978-79. She was a self-employed studio artist for 20 years, then a NB government program officer and administrator for fine arts and crafts for 10 years, before returning to her own studio in 2000. She served on boards of fine arts and crafts organizations provincially and nationally for many years. Throughout her working life she was a tireless advocate for the arts and crafts community. Charlotte led the community volunteer project that brought about the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, to which she devoted most of the last seven years of her life. Her work on the New Brunswick Arts Board and on the Charlotte Street Arts Centre was recognized in 2006 by an Excellence Award from the Province of New Brunswick in 2006 and the Paul Harris Award from the Fredericton Rotary Club in 2005. She was an avid gardener, canoeist and skier. GRAY, Reid Haldon January 6, 1932 - October 24, 2007 Reid Gray, beloved husband of Margaret, father of Laura, and father-in-law of Craig, passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at the age of 75 years, following a brave struggle with heart problems. Reid was born and raised in Woodstock, New Brunswick, where he graduated from high school. He attended Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, earning Degrees in Math and Geology in 1953. From there he set out to see the world, starting in Western Canada in the geophysical industry, which became his lifelong career. He got as far as Alberta where he met and married Margaret Tumoth in 1955. Reid's work took the young couple to the Southern U.S. where Laura was born. The family spent time in Cuba, Chile, Indonesia, and Singapore before returning to Calgary in 1976. At that time, Reid joined Petro Canada where he worked until his retirement in 1990. He never lost his understanding of or feeling for work in the field. Retirement brought new interests in golf and travel. Reid and Margaret enjoyed visits home to New Brunswick, winter trips to Arizona and North Carolina, and longer excursions to Australia, South East Asia, and Africa. He was a man with a wonderful sense of humour and a sense of fairness to all. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Margaret and daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Craig; as well as many other relatives and friends. Reid was predeceased by his parents Laura and Haldon Gray. McRAE, Joyce Irene - Joyce's journey concluded on Saturday, October 20th at Linhaven in her 86th year from colon cancer. Comforting her in her last 24 hours, as in the previous months, were her daughter, Molly Clark and son-in-law Bob, her granddaughter, Brenna Clark and her husband Stuart Warren, all of St.Catharines; her granddaughter Adria Campbell and her husband Doug, of Niagara-on-the-Lake; her brothers, Ed Sherar and wife Maria, and Stan Sherar and wife Diane, and her sister, Marge McQuestion, all of Niagara Falls; and the wonderful, caring staff of Dalhousie House of Linhaven, who helped make her final days more endurable. She is also survived by three sons, Ron (Darlene) of Ottawa, Grant (Linda) of Kincardine, and Terry (Janet) of Whitby, a brother Ken Sherar (Doris), of Brampton, eight other grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren . Her final wish for departure was to be cremated, without ceremony, and her ashes scattered on Lake Eugenia, as were those of her husband Cecil, who pre-deceased her.
