McNAMARA, Joseph Gerard Bernard “Jerry“ - Peacefully, on Monday, September 24th, 2007 at the St. Catharines General Hospital in his 82nd year. Loving father of Kevin (Susan) McNamara of Burlington and Linda (Lionel John Jr.) Middleton of Thorold. Jerry served with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War as a Rear Gunner in a Lancaster Bomber, and was Awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for Bravery. He worked at the Exolon Company (Canada) for 49 years before retiring in 1991. The family will receive friends at the HAMMOND FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Vigil Prayers will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday at 3 pm. OVERALL, Norman John Leonard - Peacefully at his residence in Niagara Falls on Sunday September 23, 2007 in his 88th year. Beloved husband of the late Jean Overall (1995). Loving father of Candice Armstrong (David Keller) of BC., Eric “Rick” Overall (Jill) of Manitoba, John Overall (Carol Desormeaux) and Todd Overall (Debbie) all of Niagara Falls. Dear grandfather of Gerald, Paul, Matt, Kim and Kelly. Survived by his sisters, Mary Mace, Ellen Ness, Florence Stanley and his brother Peter Overall. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents and 8 brothers and sisters. Although Norman was very quiet about his efforts during the Second World War, he is remembered as one of the few surviving members of the well known “1st Special Service Force“ also known as the “Devil's Brigade“. SANDERSON, Hudson Keith (Sandy) - On Saturday September 22, 2007, Hudson Keith (Sandy) Sanderson, 82 years, formerly of Niagara Falls, passed away at the Kings County Memorial Hospital in Montague, PEI. He is survived by his children Terry (Bill Morningstar), Eric (Kim), Stuart, and Adam. Also survived by his grandchildren David, Daniel, Andrew, Kevin, Haley, Sarah, Kyle, and Robyn, and daughter in law Kana. Brother of Stanley, Niagara Falls. Husband of Jean Sanderson, also of Niagara Falls. He was predeceased by his son Gordon Keith (2005), first wife Mary (1956) and infant daughter Linda (1952). Audrey (Cotter) was predeceased by her husband John Alexander Brooks (1908-1992). MacKENZIE, Melvin (Mel) Robert February 22, 1928 - September 23, 2007 Mel MacKenzie, beloved husband of Anne MacKenzie of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2007 at the age of 79 years. Mel MacKenzie was born and raised in Souris, PEI. He joined the Canadian Bank of Commerce and his career with the bank spanned forty-six years. Mel's career took him to many different locations but most of his career was spent in Calgary and Edmonton. He volunteered many hours with the Diabetes Association (Foothills). Besides his loving wife Anne, Mel is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jim MacKenzie, Grant and Jody MacKenzie; and two grandchildren, Adrienne and Alex. He is also survived by a sister Marion Large; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wally and Arlene McKenzie, Alton and Isabel McKenzie. CARON, Oscar Oscar Caron of Raven, Alberta passed away peacefully in Calgary September 23, 2007 surrounded by his children. Oscar was a self-made man, a true country gentleman who took great pride in the number of people that he called friends. By opening his home to them all, he made it possible for so many of us to enjoy the wonders of the "farm" and partake in good fun and camaraderie. He was born in 1926 in Batoche, Saskatchewan, third in a family of twelve to Armand and Mathilda Caron, and moved to Calgary in 1947. After a few small jobs, he began his lifelong career in construction, and his son Dale keeps his company Oscar Caron Construction still active today. Oscar purchased the land at Raven in 1956. It was our summer place to grow up, bring our children where he taught and showed us many of the pioneer ways of his upbringing in Batoche. "The Farm" is the legacy he has left behind. We were always so proud of our Dad and his work ethic was our constant role model. He built the new home in Raven in 1975, moved from Calgary and as he saw a need, continued to develop the property. The outhouses, the Roundhouse, the picnic tables, the showers - he always found something that piqued his interest and he had to build it so we, his friends and family, could enjoy it. Aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and neighbours - everyone enjoyed Mom and Dad's hospitality, especially the annual Father's Day Weekend. He and Mom loved to travel during the winter months to the USA and after Mom passed away in 1990, he continued his travels with his dear friend, Murriel. SCHAUB, Halley Ann (nee MacBain) We celebrate the life of a beautiful and profoundly generous spirit. Halley Ann, 72, died of cancer on September 23, 2007 in Dundas. She died the way she wanted to: at home in the arms of her family with the magnificent fall colours of the Spencer Gorge spread out before her window. Born August 17th, 1935 Halley Ann grew up in Dundas, and met Uwe, the love of her life, in 1953. A McMaster Nursing grad, she practiced for several years. Halley and Uwe settled in Ottawa to raise a family. A learned soul, she cherished books, music, poetry, theatre and the New Yorker. Halley Ann taught piano and life skills to hundreds over the years. There was nothing she would not do for a friend or someone in need. Halley Ann is deeply missed by husband Uwe, children Ben, Janine and Hartley, son-in-law Thomas Adams, daughters-in-law Soonki Schaub and Renn Scott, and grandchildren Eloise Adams, Halley Park Schaub, Callen Schaub, Kayla Adams, Thea Schaub and Maxwell Schaub. Many thanks for the care she received from nurses of the VON, an order in which she had proudly served. SIMPSON, Paula March 8, 1930 - September 23, 2007 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Paula Simpson, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Paula was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on March 8, 1930. She left Yorkton and relocated to Winnipeg where she lived and worked until 1951. From Winnipeg, she moved to Calgary where she roomed with her lifelong friend, Joy Kimbel. In 1955, Paula married Kenneth R. Simpson and they started their life together. Their daughter, Kennan, was born a year later. With a new family, Paula and Ken moved to Edmonton in 1957. During their time in Edmonton, Paula made many new friends and strengthened family connections with the Parker family. In 1971, Paula and Ken were transferred back to Calgary where she was able to be amongst family and friends. After their return, Paula started working at the University of Calgary in 1979 in the Faculty of Continuing Education where she worked until her retirement in 1995. During a busy and fulfilling retirement, Paula concentrated her efforts on various volunteering activities and spending precious time with her only granddaughter, Morrigan Simpson-Marran. Daughter Kennan (Murray Marran) and granddaughter Morrigan will have Paula's example of her humour, kindness, and generosity of spirit to carry with them always. Her brother Walter (Ineke Van Tooren) and their children will greatly miss Paula. Nieces Ann (David) Derwent, Jacquie (Harry) Homer-Dixon, Betty (William) Parker, along with their children will remember many happy times with their aunt. Her wonderful friends Alan and Marion Denis, Trudy Armstrong, Koreen Prevost and Fran and Terrence McPhee also share in our sadness. Many other family members and friends know that she reunited with her husband, Ken and other loved ones who have predeceased her. Paula lived life abundantly and we are thankful for every moment that we shared with her. KNIGHT, Jack (A.J.) Veteran, WWII Royal Canadian Engineers Retired Federal Civil Servant In Ottawa, at the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre, on Sunday, September 23, 2007, in his 86th year. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Francoise (nee Noel de Tilly). They were married for 60 years. His passing is mourned also by their children: Patricia Foottit; Ted (Barbara); Jacqueline (Chris Goodwin); and Christopher (Jane). Also left are his beloved grandchildren of whom he was so proud: Tom (Andrea) and Sarah Foottit; Erin and Heather Knight; Kimberley and Alex Goodwin; Andrea Padgett (Drew) and Lindsay Knight. There are four dear great-grandchildren: James and Victoria Foottit; Elena Knight; and Aidan Padgett. Jack was predeceased by his parents and his brother Reginald. He is survived by his brothers William and Robert, and his sisters Hilda (Jack Lane) and Beatrice. There are also many nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law Louise Pelletier. The family owes a debt of gratitude to the staff on Ottawa 2E, at the Perley, especially his nurse Karen Savery, and Dr. Robert, both of whom have cared for Jack with compassion since his stroke ten years ago. Also to Danny Villeneuve, his private caregiver, who went far beyond duty in looking after Jack's needs; words cannot describe the value of Danny's devotion, and the peace of mind he gave to the family. Special thanks go also to his sister, Beatrice, whom Jack trusted and valued for her medical advice and faithful loving care. Friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue (at Richmond Road) on Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at St. Barnabas, A & M, at the corner of Kent and James Streets, on Saturday at 11 a.m., with Father Frank Kirby officiating. Reception to follow in the Church hall. As expression of sympathy, donations in memory of Jack may be made to the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
