MAINS, Heather Lee February 1, 1957 September 1, 2007 Heather has left us, but she leaves an enduring legacy. Heather's advocacy in the not-for-profit sector reflected her deep concern about how people can interact compassionately with other people, animals, and the environment. She was a dedicated champion of women's health and well-being; a fun-loving mother to Curtis and Mia; and a friend to society's under-served. "Helping to transform social cause into social action" was both her mantra and that of the social marketing company, Duegood, she founded with her life partner, John. In Heather's various roles as mother, doula, speaker, and educator, she thrived on connecting people and ideas. Her interests were boundless and her curiosity was endless. Whether curating art shows, breaking new ground in quality maternal care, exploring self healing through Jin Shin Jyutsu, or carving down a ski hill, Heather embraced life with energy, flair and compassion. Nature - and especially, water - were fundamental to Heather's spiritual being. She died in a kayaking accident on the Tay River in Perth, Ontario. Heather's network of colleagues, friends and family are invited to remember and celebrate her fifty years of life in a memorial service at the Metropolitan Community Church, 115 Simpson Ave., Toronto on Saturday, September 22 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please support the causes that were close to Heather's heart. OBITUARY SHIRLEY HARIT December 3, 1932 - September 12, 2007 Peacefully in her sleep in the Palliative Ward in the Nanaimo General Hospital, Shirley passed away. Born and raised in Montreal, Shirley spent her most memorable moments competing on the tennis courts. She was a Quebec Champion for many years and was ranked as high as number two in Canada. She married Val in 1954, also a top tennis player. She was also a champion bowler and an avid bridge player. She spent many memorable evenings at the Mount Royal Tennis Club in Montreal, dining on the outside veranda. Her laughter could be heard all the way to court six. Her longtime companion Jean Bastien (2003) was a big part of her life in her later years. He will always be in our hearts. Shirley moved to Nanaimo, BC, in 2003 to be with her daughter Debbie and grandchildren Candice (15) and Richie (14) Hall. She loved Nanaimo, her nice condo, the beautiful surroundings and her little dog Susie. Shirley also leaves behind sister Joy (Montreal), sister-in-law Vera (Montreal) and daughter Diane (West Virginia). ELY, Marjorie Elizabeth (nee Thurlow). An inspiring Mum, Nan, great-Nan, and great-great Nan, is at rest in the presence of her faithful friend and saviour Jesus Christ. Marjorie started her life journey in England on August 12, 1924 and completed that journey on September 9, 2007 in Montreal, Quebec. A veteran of WWII, Marjorie served as a private in the British Army in England, where she met and married Private John (Jack) Thomas Ely (predeceased) of the Canadian Armed Forces. Leaving her family and country she moved to Canada with her daughter Ann (Arthur) Shane. The family grew with the birth of Judy (Robert) Lalonde. Marjorie was a special Nan to her grandchildren Joann (Gerry), Scott, Nadine and Phillip, her great-grandchildren Carrie, Stephanie, William (predeceased), Milissa, Chelsea and Amanda; and her great-great-grandchildren Katie-Lynn, Kayanna, Daniel and Thomas, and a special friend to Pat Hoffman. As you watch over us we will hold you in our hearts until we meet again, never to be separated. LAFLEUR, Celia Frances (nee Cantlie). Died peacefully on September 11, after a brief illness. Born in 1913, she was the youngest and last surviving child of Col. George S. Cantlie, original commanding officer of the 42nd Battalion of the Black Watch, and Beatrice Mary Campbell of Quebec City. She is survived by her children Deirdre Stevenson, Cynthia Baxter, Eric Molson and Stephen Molson, son-in-law Robert (Bob) Stevenson and daughters-in-law Jane Molson and Nancy Molson; by grandchildren Eric and David Stevenson, Colin, Brian and James Baxter, Andrew, Justin and Geoffrey Molson; and by sixteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Henri Grier (Laffie) Lafleur and will be greatly missed by her stepsons Henri and Anthony, their wives Anne and Sarah, and their children Sophie and Marc, and Sean and Heather, as well as their five grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by her refugee child, Adrian van Millingen, and by many nephews, nieces and cousins, for whom she was the family matriarch and genealogist, and the keeper of the family memory. There will be a service of celebration of her life on her birthdate, Saturday, September 22 at 12 noon at the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, 3415 Redpath Street, Montreal. SLIPP, EDNA MAY (DUPLISEA) - Edna May (Duplisea) Slipp of Central Blissville, born September 24, 1918, peacefully passed away at the Oromocto Public Hospital to her eternal rest on September 14, 2007, at the age of 88. Edna is survived by three daughters, Ruth Burtt (George) and Donna Slipp of Central Blissville, Wendy Harris (Matt) of Fredericton Junction; three sons, Ronald Slipp (Janie) of Hoyt, Harold Slipp (Sharon) and Duane Slipp (Sherri) of Fredericton Junction; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a niece and a nephew. Edna loved to spend time with her family and enjoyed her time picking berries and working in her gardens. She was very community minded, belonging to several groups of the Blissville United Baptist Church as well as many community organizations. She was a home maker to her husband and children. She was predeceased by her husband, Luther Slipp, and parents, Hattie (Bell) and Hartley Duplisea, as well as her brother, Erwin Duplisea. PARKS, VIOLA - 1925-2007 - Viola (Ramsay) Parks, 82, wife of the late Edward Parks, of Riverview, NB and formerly of Miramichi, NB, passed away suddenly on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 as the result of a traffic accident. Born in Barryville, NB, Viola was the daughter of the late Peter Ramsay and Marceline (Robichaud) Ramsay. She was a member of St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church in Moncton. FORGEY, FRED GORDON (BUD)- The death of Fred Gordon (Bud) Forgey Jr., loving husband of Jean (Quigley) Forgey occurred on Thursday September 13, 2007 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born 1928 in Saint John he was the son of the late Fred and Pearl (Cook). Bud was a Machinist working at McAvity's, Simms Company and later owned and operated Forgey Brothers Machine Shop. He enjoyed hunting, playing golf, playing the mandolin and could always be heard whistling. Besides his loving wife Jean, he is survived by his children Gary Forgey (Pearl) of Saint John and Cheryl Bergasse (Paul) of Brantford, ON; his twin granddaughters Makayla and Alexis Bergasse; sister Letitia Clark of Sussex; sisters in law Verna Forgey, Josephine Forgey and Audrey Forgey all of Saint John; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers Ferdinand, Brougham, Wallace and Bertram Forgey; sisters Ada Hines, Mary Cormier and Bertha Weir; infant siblings Pearl and William. BENNETT, BRIAN ALLISON - The death of Brian Bennett of Saint John occurred after a courageous battle with cancer on September 12, 2007. Robert "Bob" C. Hamilton 1922 - 2007 SHEDIAC CAPE, NB - Robert "Bob" C. Hamilton, of Shediac Cape, passed away following a lengthy illness (Marfan Syndrome) at The Moncton Hospital on Thursday, September 13, 2007 at the age of 84. Born in Shediac Cape, NB he was the son of the late Frank and Edith (Burden) Hamilton. Bob was a farmer for many years and was a former school bus driver and custodian with District 15. He was a life long member of St. Martin's in the Woods Anglican Church, Shediac Cape, NB. He was a member of the Canadian Marfan Association. A loving and caring husband, brother and friend he will be sadly missed by his wife of forty years, Lilian (Hanington) Hamilton; a sister, Ella Welling of Moncton; brother, Harvey Hamilton of Shediac Cape; as well as several Hanington brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. MOORE, SCOTT KENNETH It is with great sadness that the family of Scott Kenneth Moore announce his passing. His brave battle with cancer ended on September 13, 2007 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Woodstock, NB on December 28, 1975, Scott spent his early years in Nackawic, NB. Following graduation from the Nackawic High School, he moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he lived until March of 2007. During his 12 years in Edmonton, Scott worked as a health care worker specializing in those with disabilities. In both places, Scott's outgoing personality and love of people made him a joy to be around. He will be remembered as a wonderful son and brother as well as a loyal friend. He is survived by his parents, Ann and Ken Moore of Nackawic; his sister, Alyson Hirtle (her husband Austin and their daughter, Zoe) of Barrie, Ontario; his maternal grandparents, William and Vera Hutt of Saint John; his aunts and uncles, Gail Crain (Frank), Jane Shannon, Jack Moore (Rita), Linda Caverhill (Michael), Robert Hutt (Jean), Barbara Hutt (Kevin) and many other close friends and cousins join his parents in sorrow. LEGASSIE, ALDEN EUGENE The death of Alden LeGassie of Saint John, husband of Joan (Magee) LeGassie, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on September 12, 2007. Born in Fredericton, he was a son of the late Thomas and Kathleen (O'Leary) LeGassie. Alden had been employed with Rocca Construction and was a supervisor for many years. He enjoyed carpentry, woodworking and gardening. He volunteered his time and talents with the Scouting and Guiding groups, local schools, the Chicken Noodle Club and the Inner City Youth Ministry. He was a member of the South Central Citizen's Committee and of the Vestry of St James Anglican Church. Alden was brought up Catholic but attended St James Anglican Church for 47 years and most recently attended Germain Street Baptist Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Bob LeGassie (Ada) of Quispamsis, one daughter, Susan Colwell (John) of Saint John, one brother, Reggie LeGassie (Sandra) of Oromocto, three sisters, Pauline Carr (Willie) of Geary, Avis Cabana (Ray) of Fredericton and Doreen LeGassie of Mill Cove, three Grandchildren, Melissa and Patrick Colwell and Erin LeGassie, several nieces and nephews and several cousins. June 21,1921 - September 13, 2007 CHRISTOS, Bobby - Born June 21, 1921 in Kefalonia, Greece. Beloved husband of Sia Christos for 52 years. Devoted father to daughters, Christine and Nora, and son-in- law, Daniel Campbell. Proud grandfather to Mary Christos-Campbell. Lovingly welcoming to new family members, Jeff Girdlestone, Nadine, and Kelsey. Arriving in Canada with only $15, he worked tirelessly bringing many family members to what he affectionately describes as “this beautiful country“. His incredible work ethic, passion for life, and those he loved was demonstrated each day of his life. Dedicated owner of the Times Square Restaurant, Bobby displayed his love of the job, and his customers for over 40 years. He emotionally describes those years as, “the best (years) of his life“, always greeting his customers with a hearty, “Hello my friends“. Passing to a better world in his Orthodox faith, Bobby will be dearly missed, but his spirit will live on in all those lives he touched with his goodness and love. MULHOLLAND, William-David «Bill» À la maison, entouré de sa famille, est décédé le 8 septembre 2007, William David Mulholland était âgé de 81 ans. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Nancy Booth, ses enfants William (Ev), Charles, James (Elke), John (Martine), Elizabeth, Madeline (Danny), Sarah, Caroline (Andrew) et Bruce, ses petits-enfants Matthew, Eric, Fiona, Sam, Patrick-Henry, Véronique, Isabelle, Madison, Finny, William et Andrew. Né à Albany, N.Y., il est le fils de feu William David et de feue Helen Elizabeth (Flack) Mulholland. Durant la deuxième guerre mondiale, il sert aux Philippines pour l'armée américaine (1943-1946). Une fois rentré au pays, il étudie à l'université Harvard (B.A. cum laude, 1951) et par la suite, il obtient son M.B.A de la Harvard Business School (1952). Il débute sa carrière chez Morgan Stanley & Co en 1952. Il est le fer de lance du financement du projet hydro-électrique de Churchill Falls au Labrador. En 1970, il accepte le poste de président-directeur général de la compagnie Brinco, complétant ainsi la construction du projet Churchill Falls. En 1975, il est nommé président de la Banque de Montréal (1975-81), président-directeur général (1979-89) ainsi que président du conseil d'administration (1981-90). Bill défendait l'excellence et l'éthique en affaires. Il croyait fermement à leur importance afin d'établir une norme claire dans ses propres entreprises. Il livrera constamment et publiquement ce message, spécialement aux étudiants en affaires. Il contribuera activement à plusieurs organismes comme l'hôpital Saint-Mary's, l'Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, l'université Memorial, l'université Queen's, l'Atlantic Brücke, la fondation de la Gendarmerie Royale du Canada, la fondation du Collège Saint-Michael's, l'École des Hautes Études Commerciales, l'Institut Hudson et le Conseil Canadien des Chrétiens et des Juifs. Il a été aussi directeur de plusieurs entreprises comme le Chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique, Upjohn, Standard Life et Kimberley Clark. Il recevra un doctorat honorifique de l'université Memorial (1972) et de l'université Queen's (1988). Born in Albany, N.Y., 1926, to the late William David and Helen Elizabeth (Flack) Mulholland, Bill graduated from the Christian Brothers Academy in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was commissionned in the infantry and served in the Philippines until honourably discharged in 1946. He then completed his education at Harvard College (B.A. cum laude 1951) and Harvard Business School (M.B.A. 1952). Joining Morgan Stanley & Co. in 1952, he became a general partner in 1962 and spearheaded the then largest-ever sale of corporate securities to finance construction of the Churchill Falls hydro-electric project in Labrador. In 1970, he accepted the position of Brinco President & CEO, driving construction of the $1 billion hydro-electric plant to its successful completion ahead of schedule and under budget in 1974. In 1975, he moved to the Bank of Montreal where he served as President (1975-81), Chief Executive Officer (1979-89) and Chairman of the Board (1981-90). During his tenure, he led Canada's oldest bank into the modern era of financial services, orchestrated its expansion into the United States with the purchase of Harris Bank, and significantly improved the bank's performance, readying it for the intense competition of the emerging global marketplace. Bill was a champion of excellence and believed strongly in the importance of ethics, setting a clear standard in all of his business undertakings and consistently delivering this message publicly, especially to business students. He contributed actively to many organizations, including St. Mary's Hospital, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Memorial University, Queen's University, Atlantic Brucke, the RCMP Foundation, the Canada Olympic Trust, St. Michael's College Foundation, L'Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales, the Hudson Institute, and the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. He served as a Director of numerous companies including Upjohn, Standard Life Assurance, Canadian Pacific Railway, and Kimberley-Clark. In recognition of his public service, he was awarded honorary doctorates by Memorial University (1972) and Queen's University (1988), as well as Israel's Prime Minister's Medal (1987) and the Knight Commander's Cross (Badge and Star) Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany (1989). On his retirement, Bill was able to realize a lifelong passion, working with his wife Nancy, son James and daughter-in-law Elke to build one of the premier Hanoverian stud farms in the world, Windswept Farm. Friends are invited to join the family for visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, September 11, at the J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Rd. Georgetown, ON. FEHRMANN, Bernd We regret to announce the peaceful passing of Bernd Fehrmann on August 25, 2007 at his home in Vernon. Bernd was born in Germany in 1946 and his family moved to Calgary when he was a young boy. When Bernd had his own family, he moved to Summerland and eventually settled down in Vernon where he acted as the Treasurer for the City of Vernon for twenty-one years until retiring in 2006. Bernd was predeceased by his father Kurt. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Antonia; son Darren of Vancouver; daughter Theresa of Yellowknife; older brother Peter of Calgary; older sister Barbara of Mission; and mother Gretel of Calgary. Bernd enjoyed skiing, hiking, golfing and reading. He was a very determined and positive family man and a hard worker with a great sense of ethics. His courageousness saw him through the tough battle against cancer, with his family by his side.
