MAYBIN, Margaret Louise Margaret Louise Maybin born January 25, 1919 in Cremona, Alberta, passed away at Rotary Hospice House, Richmond, BC, September 13, 2007. Louise was the daughter of an Alberta pioneer, Frank Colwell. She grew up in Calgary and went to art school in Los Angeles. She was a devoted wife, mother, friend, volunteer. She was an artist. Louise will be remembered with love by her daughter, Patricia and son-in-law, Rick Donaldson of Vancouver. A tree will be planted in Louise's memory in Fish Creek Park, Calgary. SCHMALTZ, Frances Mary May 30, 1933 - September 14, 2007 Frances Mary Schmaltz of Calgary, formerly of Beiseker, AB, passed away on Friday, September 14, 2007 at the age of 74 years. Frances was born in Calgary and moved to Beiseker with her family in 1945 where she resided until moving to Calgary in March of 2005. In 1952 she married Wendel Schmaltz and for forty-four years they farmed north of Beiseker. Frances was active in various community organizations over the years and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Frances is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Jacqueline and John Schissel, Denise and Lloyd Heine, Wendy Schmaltz, and Patricia and Kim Jones all of Calgary; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lyle and Rhonda Schmaltz of Calgary and Brent and Kim Schmaltz of Beiseker. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren. Frances was predeceased by her husband Wendel and her brother Bill. HARTSHORN, Donna Elaine (Service Advisor - Jim Tubman Motors and past advisor at Myers Motors) Suddenly on Sunday, August 12, 2007. Donna Hartshorn (nee Niebergall) beloved friend of Shawn Atkinson. Dear sister of Pat Thomas (Calvin Haeusler) and a niece Lee both of Saskatoon and many friends and relatives across Canada. Donna was predeceased by her parents during the past year Ernest and Agnes Niebergall of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Donna was bright, generous, caring and had a quick sense of humour. Donna shared her passion for automobiles with her partner, Shawn at SAR Sound and Performance, her love of dogs with their faithful canine companion, Samson, who accompanied them to all car shows. Donna had worked for many years at Myers Motors in Ottawa and was employed at Tubman Motors at the time of her passing. Donna left us far too soon, but in her short time with us, she touched many lives and will be remembered for her kindness and laughter. WILLIAMS, Cymryd P. (Cym) Dec. 12, 1927 - Sept. 10, 2007 It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Cym Williams. He is survived by his wife, Helen, daughters, Lyn Hall (Steve ) of Ottawa and Pamela of Duncan. Also missed by step-granddaughters, Erin and Alison and granddaughter, Meaghan, as well as brothers Ted (Laureen), John and family on both sides which he knew and loved. Cym grew up in Kamloops. After finishing his Civil Engineering degree at UBC he spent over 30 years working with the Forest Service, which he much enjoyed. In 1984 he suddenly developed Guillaine-Barre syndrome which hospitalized him for a year and left him partially paralyzed. A kind and gentle man whose quiet courage and strength in handling his life challenge has inspired all who met him. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at St. Aidan's United Church, 3703 St. Aidans St., Victoria, B.C. at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 17th. A reception for all will follow at the church. The family would love to collect any special memories for a keepsake journal. HEATHER PROUDFOOT BARRY - On September 14, 2007, surrounded by the love of her family and friends, Heather peacefully passed away at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax. She was a loving and wonderful mother, wife, daughter, and friend who will be sadly missed but remembered with love and a smile. Heather was born in New Glasgow N.S. on December 17, 1958. She graduated from New Glasgow High School in 1977, where she excelled in soccer and music and was the founding editor of the High School Newspaper. She studied journalism at Carleton University in Ottawa, graduating in I981 with an Honours Degree in Journalism (with concentrations of study in Canadian History and Political Journalism) Heather worked summers as a newspaper reporter with the New Glasgow Evening News, landing her first full time job at CFNB Radio in Fredericton, covering city council and the law courts. Heather began her career with the Atlantic Television System (CTV) in 1982 in Saint John. In 1984, ATV moved her to Halifax to report for Live at Five and the 6 o'clock news. In 1988 Heather became the network's Legislature reporter covering the political events of the day from Province House in Halifax. She remained in that position until 1996, also serving in various executive positions for the Legislative Press Gallery Association. During her career as a political journalist Heather covered many significant events, now part of Nova Scotia's political history. Her stories documented such events as the tumultuous end of the Buchanan era and the rise and rocky fall of the John Savage government. She also had the opportunity to travel. She was sent to Washington D.C. to cover the ushering in of the free trade era when Brian Mulroney became Prime Minister. Heather also covered Canadian Military maneuvers off the coast of Puerto Rico. She was among the first journalists sent to the site of the Westray Mine disaster and along with the CTV team, provided ongoing coverage of the immediate aftermath of the event and the years of political fall-out that followed. Heather always said that was the most significant story she ever covered. She was especially touched by the event given that it happened in her own home county. Indeed it was her love of home and family that kept her near, despite several opportunities to work nationally elsewhere in the country. In 1992 she met and, two years later, married the love of her life Art Barry. Together they had two boys, Michael in 1996 and David in 1997. Heather continued to work part-time for ATV after the arrival of her sons but then devoted herself solely to her family and community. She was president of the Crichton Home and School Association, a co-ordinator with the Block Parents Association and a member of the Saint Andrews Presbyterian Ladies Guild. She has also served on the selection panel for the University of Kings College Atlantic Journalism Awards. She also continued her volunteer work with CTV's Cape Breton edition of the Christmas Daddies telethon appearing as co-host with dear friend and colleague Bill Jessome for 20 years. Diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2004 Heather confronted her fight quietly but bravely. She fought back and became well again and was resuming a regular life with family and friends. A family trip to Disneyworld in 2005 and time spent at the family cottage in Pictou County will live in our memories forever. On May 31st, 2006; however, the bad news came. The cancer was back and Heather and her loved ones were in for the fight of their lives. Her husband Art, her boys and her family were at her side for every moment of the battle and her gratitude and love for them saw her through. Heather spent the last months of her life preparing her family for what was to come. Long talks with the children, lots of hand-holding with Art and her Mom made for many special moments. Even then, the good moments outweighed the bad. September 15, 2007 HEATHER PROUDFOOT BARRY - While shorter than it should have been, Heather felt she led a full life. A wonderful childhood rambling over the sands and rocks at the cottage, close to 20 years in a profession she lovedand looking after her own family and children. Despite her illness she still managed to pull off the best Halloween parties in the neighborhood, our regular Christmas traditions and our Valentines chocolate fondue parties. She was always quick with a get-well note or basket of food for anyone else going through tough times. And her smile..oh, that smile,continued to light up a room until the very end. Heather is survived by her husband Art Barry, sons Michael and David at home, her parents Jim and Jean Proudfoot of New Glasgow and brothers Frank (Tara), Kendall (Jenny) and Jim (Janet). She is also survived by her wonderful nieces and nephews.and oldest and dearest friend Barb. Heather would like to thank her many friends and neighbors who rushed to her side when needed. Every card, every note, every little package meant a great deal. Heather's ashes will be scattered in the waters of Chance Harbour in Pictou County. There shall be no visitation but family will be receiving friends at in Dartmouth on Monday evening, September 17, 2007 at the Banook Canoe Club between 6:30 pm and 9:00 pm. Flowers may be sent to the Banook Club between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the palliative care unit of the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow (1-902-752-8311). LAW, William (Bill) Died on Sunday, September 9, 2007 in his 81st year, from a damn cancer. Survived by his loving wife Audrey "Muffet"; three sons Bill, Bob and Jim; twin grandchildren, Billy and Becky. Bill luckily "found" Muffet while on a trip to England in 1954 and she followed him back to Canada in 1956. Bill learnt to fly and do parachute jumping at an early age and after graduating from Queen's University in 1950 as a Mechanical Engineer, he spent his life in aviation. He held senior aviation managerial positions at Spartan Air Services; deHavilland Aircraft; Transport Canada; and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Although Bill never wrote his memoirs, he was given recognition of his aviation endeavours in several books by noted Canadian aviation authors; notably Shirlee Matheson, Norman Avery and Allan MacNutt. Bill had several notable people in aviation as his friends, in particular, Canadian aviation pioneers "Weldy" Phipps and Lorna de Blicquy. Bill is most proud to have been included in Queen's University's 1992 publication "Queen's Engineers; A Century of Applied Science 1893 - 1993". As being one of those engineers in the past 100 years that contributed something special to Canada's development. Since Bill never boasted outside the family about his ancestors, no one knew that his mother "Ninette" was a direct descendant (over 250 years) of Quebec's most famous family, the Baillairges. They were renowned as architects and engineers having designed and built innumerable churches in the province. The dictionary Larousse in France gives a special entry to this family. On Bill's English father's side, he could also boast that he was directly related to John Law and Sons, the owners and operators in the 1900s, of England's largest woollen mill. Bill spent his retirement with his wife on a farm outside of Merrickville where he enjoyed gardening. On April 18, 2007 Bill and Muffet celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and his 80th birthday. Interment at Beechwood Cemetery, very near his Mother - Marie Baillairge and Father - William Law. PEPPER, Miles H., Q.C. 1930 - 2007 After a long and valiant battle with cancer, Miles H. Pepper died in Winnipeg on Wednesday, September 12, 2007. He was the only son of Alexander Miles Pepper and Harriet Martha Rattenbury who predeceased him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann, and by his children and stepchildren: Shelagh Pepper of Kitchener, ON; Maureen Pepper and her children Aryn and Sam of Ottawa, ON; Michael Ratz, wife Catherine and children Caitlin, Meagan and Allison of North Vancouver, BC; Christopher Ratz and his daughters McKenzee and Emma of Ottawa; and Leslie Larkin, her husband Shawn and their two sons Trevor and Kyle, also of Ottawa. He will be missed by his sister Marion Murray-Axelson, her husband Charles of Pasadena, CA and her children David Murray, wife Lorraine and daughter Stephanie of Middletown Springs, Vermont; Yvonne Banks, husband Kent and children, Kasey and Kayla, of Colorado Springs, CO, and Russell Murray of Pasadena, CA; and by his sister Dorothy McFee and her husband John of Winnipeg, MB and their children: Louanne Adams, husband Derek and daughter Laurisa of Winnipeg; Daphne McFee, husband Paul Woods and children Melanie, Matthew, Kristien and Emilie of Ottawa; Christopher McFee, wife Susan and their son Evan of Langley, BC and Tom McFee and his wife Kristy of Winnipeg. He is also survived by his stepmother, Muriel Pepper. Miles was educated at Isaac Brock School and Daniel Mclntyre Collegiate where he was President of the student body in 1948-49. After graduation he entered the Faculty of Commerce at the University of Manitoba and graduated in 1952. He worked for a year with the Bank of Nova Scotia and then entered the Faculty of Law. While there he was Prime Minister of the Mock Parliament in 1955, Treasurer of UMSU in 1954-55, and President of UMSU in 1955-56. He joined Canadian Industries Limited after graduating from Law in 1957. He returned to Winnipeg in 1959, was called to the Bar and practiced law until late 1960. He was seconded to Imperial Chemical Industries, London, England in 1965-66 and then rejoined C-I-L in 1966 as Assistant Secretary. In 1970 Miles joined the Federal Department of Justice as Legislative Counsel. In 1976 he was named Queen's Counsel by the Governor General and in 1980 became the Director of Legal Services to the Privy Counsel Office. In early 1986 Miles was named Assistant Deputy Attorney General and Chief Legislative Counsel for the Province of Manitoba with prime responsibility for completion of the English and French versions of the revised Statutes of Manitoba. When the Statutes were either enacted or ready for re-enactment he returned to Ottawa at the end of 1987 as Secretary of the Statute Revision Commission where he worked on the Revised Statutes of Canada. In 1990 Miles transferred to Yellowknife, NWT to be Chief Legislative Counsel to the Northwest Territories with responsibility for the re-enactment of the NWT Statutes in French as well as the usual duties of Legislative Counsel. After the enactment was complete he stayed on and became Assistant Deputy Minister after which he retired to Winnipeg in 1995. There were two things that Miles especially enjoyed in life. One was curling. He started at the Thistle Curling Club in November 1946 as a member of Daniel McIntyre's curling club. He made many friends over the years while curling, none more steadfast than the members of the Wildwood Seniors Curling Club. The other was his participation in the parachuting club in Yellowknife. He took only six jumps but they were exhilarating experiences - a thing of the moment but long in the memory. His year-long journey at Jocelyn House was made easier by the love and support of his many good friends, especially Grant Sims and his family. Miles considered them his second family. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses of GR3 at the Health Sciences Centre and to the staff and volunteers at Jocelyn House for their constant care and kindness. A gentle man. Cremation has occurred. Interment and a celebration of Miles' life will take place at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave., on Tuesday, September 18 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Miles' name to a charity of choice or to Jocelyn House, 177 Egerton Street, Winnipeg. His fondest memories were of the almost fifty summers spent at the family cottage on the shores of his beloved Lac Simon, between Ottawa and Montreal. A Quebecer by choice, he remained to the end a proud Canadian of Irish extraction and member of the Ryan clan from Almonte, Ontario in the Ottawa Valley, of which he was the last member of his generation. Predeceased by his parents James and Annie Ryan, his brothers Dominic and Martin and his sisters Sr. St. Dominic G.S.I.C., Annie Kennedy, Sadie Stanton, Mary Grace and Irene Dunnigan. He leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces, and their descendants. Dad, you didn't quite match the ninety-eight years of your late father, but your love of life, family and of others over ninety-two years were an inspiration to all. You will live on forever in our hearts and minds. Visitation at: (Valet Parking Available) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2007. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the St. Viateur church, corner of Laurier and Cote St. Catherine, Outremont. At his request, his remains were cremated. Prayers and burial at St. Michael's cemetery in Corkery, Ontario at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 22, 2007. Thanks to the entire staff of the long term care wing, 7th floor north, St. Mary's Hospital and to the staff of the CLSC Cote des Neiges-Park Extension, with special thanks to CLSC nurse Lise Verrault and CLSC Dr. Schuldiner and to St. Mary's Dr. Bonnycastle. Thanks also to our family physician, Dr. Mark Roper for his generous help and support over many, many years. May his soul rest in peace. KOSKI, Dr. George R. - In loving memory of George R. Koski, 70 years, who passed away peacefully September 14th, 2007 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Center. Son of the late Reino Koski and the late Martha Liekki (nee Laine). Beloved partner and best friend of Doreen Scott. Loving father of Christopher (Eva Janssens), Lisa (Marshall Melnychuk), David and Jordy. Loving grandfather of Sarah and Luke. Loving brother of Helen Koski and Allan Paananen (Anne Marie). Sadly missed by many cousins, nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces in Canada and Finland, and extended family comprising the Gainers and Bouchards. George was formerly a Professor in the Faculty of Education of Memorial University in St. John's, Nfld. He began his working life as a mining technician in Elliot Lake after graduating from Haileybury Mining School. However, George felt that his future lay in the field of higher education and ultimately attained the level of PhD at Michigan State University. To George life itself was a continuing learning experience. In his younger days George was an accomplished athlete in paddling, swimming, basketball and track and field. Having lived on both coasts of Canada he chose to return to his beloved Sudbury where his roots lay and felt he belonged. He shared a loving relationship with Doreen on the shores of Lake Ramsey. With his giving and generous spirit he influenced all who knew him. In spite of continuing medical adversity he had a great strength of character and stoicism. This allowed him to live each day to its fullest and remark “Life is good“. A Celebration of George's Life will be held at St. Andrew's United church, 111 Larch St.,Sudbury Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 at 11 a.m. Cremation.
