SMITH, D. MERLE The death of D. Merle Smith occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton on September 3rd, 2007, at the age of 87. Born May 8, 1920 at Doak Settlement, NB, she was the daughter of the late Clarence & Elizabeth (Lord) McConnell. She lived in Waterville, NB for four years following WW II, moved to Presque Isle, ME in 1949, returning to Fredericton in 1977. Merle was an accountant and secretary. She was a member of the Olivet Wesleyan Church in Marysville and while as a member of Presque Isle Wesleyan Church, she served in various ministries. They included 20 years on the board of administration; 17 years as Sunday School Supervisor and Director of Seniors. One of Merle's passions was music and she sang in the choir and the King's Daughters Quartet. She is survived by her children, Joanne Johnson of Fredericton and Wanda Prather of Easton, ME, Nina Haywood (Eric), Muriel McGuire (Owen), Merle (Annabel) Smith, Viola (Wally) Lewis, Clara (Murray) Bickford, Melvin (Faye) Smith; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one brother, Eugene McConnell of Jacksonville, NB; one sister, Donna Wallace of Lincoln, NB. She was also predeceased by her husbands, James McIsaac and Edward J. Smith; children, Durrel Smith, Hartley Smith and Lillian Frost; brother, Alvah McConnell; sister, Leona Harvie; sons-in-law, Dale Johnson and Bryant Cummings; grandson, Rev. Lyndall Frost; brother-in-law, Sterling Wallace and sister-in-law, Jean McConnell; and a very special childhood friend, Bill Hewitson. Resting at Bishop's Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road with visitation on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. RAINEY, C. William "Bill" Bill passed away in the early morning of August 27, 2007 after a short but undaunted and fearless battle with colon cancer at the young age of 54, with his family by his side. He will be forever loved and remembered by his beautiful wife, Diane (Jefferies), and his fantastic and adored children, Kacie and Jeff and his faithful Boxer, Kona. He is also survived by his three brothers, Doug, Dave (Deanna) and Brian Rainey; his sister-in-law Janice Quinn and her husband Sean, and his two very special nieces, Avianna and Joelle Quinn; brother-in-law David Jefferies; Michelle and Emilie Rainey; Ellen, Jeff, Laurie and Victoria Powers. Predeceased by his mother and father, Shirley and Keith Rainey; and his mother-in-law, Nora Jefferies. Bill was born in Duncan, B.C. and moved to Calgary at a very early age. He attended Elboya Elementary and Jr. High and graduated from Henry Wise Wood High School. Bill received his B.Sc. from the University of Alberta in 1976. With a never ending quest to learn, Bill earned numerous diplomas from the University of Calgary and Queen's University School of Business, Executive Development Centre. Through the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, he was currently preparing to write the Chartered Director's exam in September. After the successful completion of this course the Chartered Director Designation (C. Dir) would have been bestowed upon him. After completing university and a six month adventure tour of Europe, Bill began his business career with Xerox in Calgary and then went on to work for Royal Trust in Toronto where he took on increasing responsibilities leading to his position as Managing Partner Sales Management and Training. He and his family moved back to Calgary for several years where he assumed a Director's position with AGT/Telus. Group Telecom recognized his skills and Bill and his family once again moved to Oakville to lead the National Sales and Technical Support teams as Senior Vice President. Three years ago, Bill with his incredible "A" team was given the opportunity to create the vision, culture and environment of the start up VOIP Company, Vonage Canada. Bill was honoured to have served this team as President of the company. Giving back to the community was extremely important to Bill and his passion for helping children led him to become the Chairman of Kid's Help Phone in Alberta as well as being a member of the National Board of KHP. Bill was also the Chairman of the Executive Advisory Council for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Bill's special interest and truth be told, his gift, was the mentoring, nurturing and coaching of his family, friends and business colleagues. He was able to bring out the best in those people who sought out his wisdom and guidance. Watching Kacie's karate classes and Jeff's hockey games gave Bill immense pride. His voracious passion for reading allowed Bill to gain incredible insight and invaluable knowledge into history and business. Bill loved taking family vacations to warm and exotic places where he could indulge in his love of scuba diving and sailing. These vacations and adventures also allowed Bill to capture those moments through his love of photography. Golf was the game that kept Bill humble. Bill always looked forward to taking the annual holiday to the family cabin at Sylvan Lake, Alberta where he could relax with his family and friends who always dropped by. There will be an open house to Celebrate Bill's life on Friday, September 21, 2007 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a short commemoration beginning at 4:30 p.m. The celebration will be held at the Glencoe Club located at 636 - 29 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB. A special thank you to all the caring Doctors and staff at OTMH, the Henderson Hospital in Hamilton, and our family physician and friend, Dr. John Denby. McLEISH, Vera May October 4, 1919 - August 31, 2007 One of the bravest women who ever lived died on Friday, August 31, 2007 at the age of 87 years. For three years, Vera May McLeish fought ovarian cancer and congestive heart failure, trying to keep well for her husband, Neil. They had been married for sixty-two years and she was the joy of his life. Vera was born on a grain farm near Cromer, Manitoba, on October 4, 1919 and her heart was never far from there. She had a very happy childhood with her parents, Bella and George Schmeltz, five sisters, and two brothers - Myrtle, Harvey, Rose, Gordon, Grace, Rene, and Lillian. Her brother, Gordon, and her sister, Lillian, are still living in Reston and it was one of her joys to go home to see them and all of her other relatives in Manitoba. Vera met Neil in Oak Lake, Manitoba, where she went to board with her sister while going to high school. Neil loves to tell the story of seeing her outside of the General Store. His friend asked him if he knew who the new girl was and if he had met her yet. Neil answered: "I haven't met her but I know that she is Myrtle's sister and I'm going to marry her someday." Neil went overseas for five years during World War II and Vera trained as a nurse and a secretary while he was away. Of course, they did marry when he came home and they lived a happy life together. Vera loved her life as an Air Force wife and moved all over Canada and England with her husband during his career. She often told of living in isolation on a radar base named Holberg on the Northern tip of Vancouver Island where cougars and black bears were frequent visitors to their yard. She said the two happiest days of her young life were when her children, Dennis and Wendy, were born. After Neil's retirement from the R.C.A.F. in 1964, they settled in Calgary and Vera went to work as a secretary for the Calgary Public School Board. In 1976, she retired to take care of her son, Dennis, who was dying from leukemia. That was the hardest thing that she ever had to do and she did it bravely and beautifully. Dennis died peacefully because of her. Vera's granddaughters, Jennifer and Sarah, were absolutely precious to her. They brought her great happiness and she took to the role of Grandmother with love. Jen and Sarah are missing their Grandma terribly. Her husband, Neil, her daughter, Wendy, and her son-in-law, Darrel, also survive Vera and are all so sad about her death. We thank all of the many, many friends and relatives who have faithfully visited over the years and made Vera's life full and fun. NETCHAY, Nicholas - Passed away peacefully on Monday, August 27, 2007, in his 88th year.Nicholas was born in the Ukraine on St. Nicholas day, December 19, 1919. He came to Toronto, Canada in 1951 with his wife Nila, her parents Katerina and Nikifor Osochenko and three children Alexey, Alexander and Olga. After two years of working, he saved to purchase a fruit farm in Beamsville where daughter Ludmila was born and they raised their family. He later developed a successful construction company, Rainbow Construction, which was long recognized in the Niagara area for its high quality homes. Nicholas was a member of the Masonic Lodge as well as a very active member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Hamilton. Following the sudden death of his wife Nila in 1966, Nicholas met Maria Wyprysky whom he married in 1970. Nicholas welcomed Maria's son Victor as his own. Nicholas left a loving legacy in his large family. He will be missed by his wife Maria, his son Alexey (Margaret), grandson Wesley (Jennifer), his son Alexander (Mary), grandson Gregg (Colleen), great- grandchildren Jake and Charlee, grandaughter Andrea (Jeff Ernewein), great- grandchildren Emma and Abigail, daughter Olga (Ian Martin), grandchildren Sean and Ryan, daughter Ludmila (Reid Beard), son Victor Wyprysky (Mary), grandchildren Stephen, Adam and Victoria, sister-in-law Zina, nephew Walter and friends and relatives in the Ukraine and Canada. Visitation was held at TRUSCOTT, BROWN AND DWYER FUNERAL CHAPEL (1309 King St. E., 905-549-2417) on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Panachyda on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service was held at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox (855 Barton St. E.) on Friday August 31, 2007 at 10 a.m. Interment at Woodland Cemetery. DAYMAN, Verna Pheobe (STEPHENS) died peacefully in her sleep on September 2, 2007 with her family at her side. Verna was born in the Grenfell area on March 21, 1925, and was raised on a farm near Corning, SK. As a young woman Verna worked in Regina at Eatons before she married the love of her life, Lloyd Dayman, on July 10, 1950. They resided on a farm near Windthorst until 1956. They moved to a farm east of Corning until their retirement to Windthorst in 1987. Verna had a fondness for music and loved to dance, whether it was on the dance floor or in the kitchen. She enjoyed a good laugh and was always eager to be in on a good joke. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Verna will be missed by Brenda Dayman of Brandon, MB; Brian (Faith) Dayman of Assiniboia, SK; Donna (Jim) Johnston of Sherwood Park, AB; Linda (Dave) Englot of Glenavon, SK; Ron (Monica) Dayman of Corning, SK; Joan (Ralph) Allan of Creelman, SK; her brother Roy (Audrey) Stephens of Corning, SK; sister Betty Jean (Edwin) Hipfner of Ontario and fondly remembered by her 18 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and all of her nieces and nephews, relatives and friends including her dear friend Gladys McLean of Regina. JEFFREY, Nora (Allen) - Died peacefully at the Algoma Manor in Thessalon on September 1, 2007. She was born in Thessalon on May 26, 1910, first child of Herb and Lottie Allen. A few years later the family moved to a farm at Livingstone Creek, 5 miles east of Thessalon. Nora and her siblings walked 1.5 miles to a one-room school house on Maple Ridge. Her father had made the bricks for that school, from Maple Ridge sand in 1903. Nora became a teacher and her first post was to the Maple Ridge School where her students included her youngest brothers, Ray and Dean. She then moved to Sault Ste Marie and taught in the Greenwood School in Korah. In 1938 she married Joseph Allan and they had 3 children, Ken, Joy, and Pat. Joseph died in the Second World War in 1945. Nora and her three children moved back to the farm at Livingston Creek to live with her father and two youngest brothers in 1947. She returned to teaching in Sault Ste Marie at Greenwood in 1954. Over the next 20 years she also taught at James Lyons, Isabel Fletcher, Prince of Wales and Broadview (where she became the special education teacher). In 1969 she married Bill Jeffrey, a member of her church. Nora has been a life- long member of the Christian Science Society. Nora is predeceased by husband Bill, brothers Bill, Ray and Glen, sisters Ivy and Goldie. She is survived by brother Dean (Thelma), sons Ken (Paddy) and Pat (Patricia), daughter Joy (Bert). By direct descent she had just one grandchild, Joe (Stephanie), and one great grandchild, John. But through the marriages of Ken, Pat, Joy and Joe she was happy to welcome into the family grandchildren Jonathan (Marina), Ken (Elizabeth), Wendy (Doug), Sue (Grant), Debbie (Wes), Sky (Rob), Reed (Brian), Wave (Otto); great grandchildren Sasha (Greg), Chantal, Kody, Leaf (Tanya), Rain (Rory), Teslin (Peter), Brandon, Curtis, Brendon, Bryce, Alysha (Mark), Kyle, Jordan, Dustin, Derek; great great grandchildren Anna and Landon. The descendants of Herb and Lottie have remained close, in good part due to the efforts of Nora's niece, Lynne Flood. Lynne and numerous nieces and nephews will remember Nora with love and affection. The family would like to thank the staff of the Algoma Manor for their high level of loving care over the past two years. VALLES, Bridget (Bid) Theresa (nee de Sousa) May 7, 1928 - September 1, 2007 Bridget Valles passed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on Saturday, September 1, 2007 at the age of 79 years. Mum and Dad immigrated to Canada in 1961 and over the years welcomed and encouraged numerous newcomers and family members. The Christmas cards came from everywhere! She loved to entertain, enjoyed all her travels, was a fabulous cook and was an active member of her church community in Montreal, then in Calgary until her health declined. Over the last decade, she gained strength through her Christian faith and her own personal angel, my Dad. She taught me to sew a straight line, a love of shoes and to always do my best. Her one regret was that I did not inherit her culinary skills gene! She was so proud of Tyler and Kendra and the fine human beings that they are. In honour of my Mum, hug someone you love today. Frank Jacob Chapeskie d'Arnprior était alors âgé de 85 ans. Frank a vécu sept ans à la Villa d'Arnprior, 1 an au centre hospitalier Grove et ses deux derniers mois au Centre de santé Perley Rideau pour anciens combattants où il a reçu des soins exeptionnels. Il était le fils bien-aimé de feu Peter Chapeskie et de feu Pauline Rumleskie. Il était l'époux bien-aimé de feu Stella Kulas (1978); le cher père de Robert (Josée Méthot) d'Orléans. Il était également le frère adoré de John de Cobden, Barbara Armstrong de Brockville et Dorothy Howick d'Hamilton. Il fut prédécédé par son frère Peter, sa soeur Anne Stegne et une petite-fille, Danielle. Un merci très spécial à Marie pour son aide, sa compassion et pour sa présence auprès de la famille.
