Maria Petrovic Passed away on / Décédé(e) le July 27, 2007 With sadness we announce the death of Maria “Mitz” Antonia Petrovic nee Nagler, on July 27th at the Sensenbrenner Hospital in Kapuskasing at the age of 87. She is survived by her son, Stephen (Yvette McLaughlin) of Kapuskasing, one sister, Lydia Nagler of Zell am See, Austria, one sister-in-law, Marie Nagler of Mindemoya, three grandchildren, Joshua, Hannah and Marisa as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stevan and a brother, Theodore Nagler. Maria was born October 19, 1919 in Zell am See, Republic of Osterrich. She graduated from Offentliche Handelsfchule in Salzburg, Austria in 1935. She lived and worked across Europe including Austria, Germany, and Denmark prior to returning home to Zell am See after the Second World War. There she met Stevan her future husband. Mitz followed Stevan to Canada and they were married in 1952 a union that lasted 51 years. They settled and raised a family in Sudbury, Ontario, living there until 2003. Her career in Sudbury included various administrative positions with local legal firms and the Ontario government. Following her retirement she spent her summers at her cottage on Manitoulin Island. In 2003 Maria made the journey north to Kapuskasing. She loved her time in the north saying it was the best place to live with the greatest people. Mitz was a world-class skier and Olympic hopeful who thrived in the Austrian Alps. Her love of skiing continued in Canada well into her 70’s becoming a local Sudbury legend. Her passion in the summer was spending time on the local tennis courts. She had a true love of the outdoors and cherished her boat trips into the remote bays of the North Channel and time spent at her Manitoulin cottage with family. While indoors she loved to read, cook, and reminisce about her experiences. Mitz’s deep love of animals was bestowed on her dogs that seldom missed a treat. Her greatest love and most cherished moments were the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Her unselfishness touched so many around her and she brought much joy to all those who crossed her path. She will be remembered as a loving, wonderful and kind wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will truly and sadly be missed by all those who shared in her remarkable life and will forever be in our hearts and souls. We love you so much. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date in Midemoya, Ontario. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Maria’s memory to the charity of your choice.

Outre son épouse, il laisse dans le deuil ses enfants : Manon (Pierre Beauregard), Carole (Martin Gonzales): ses petits-enfants: Pierre-Olivier et Sarah; ses frères: Hermas (Rose-May Malette), Osias (Micheline Meunier), Athanase (Suzanne Mantha): ses soeurs: Albina (feu Noé Lalonde), Thérèse (feu Paul-André Lahaie), Lise (Marcel Raymond) ainsi que plusieurs beaux-frères, belles-soeurs, neveux, nièces, cousin(e)s et ami(e)s. Il fut prédécédé par son frère Albert (Jeanine Raymond) et ses 2 soeurs: Malvina (feu Gaston Provost) et Irène (Roland Cousineau). Mrs. Grant was born in Newcastle, a daughter of the late John and Regina (Pitre) Benoit, and had resided the greater part of her life in Saint John. She is survived by a son, Vernon Thibeau of Montreal; a step-son, David Grant of Calgary; two step-daughters, Mary Jane McManus and Betty Ann Grant, both of Saint John; two brothers, George (Odile) and Raymond Benoit, both of Miramichi; three sisters, Marie Edith Benoit of Moncton, Bertha (Alyre) Malley of Saint John, and Theresa (Richard) Daigle of St. Louis de Kent; five step-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews, and cousins. REID, Dorothy Edna June 28, 1914 - July 26, 2007 Dorothy Edna Reid, (nee Turner) of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at the age of 93 years. Dorothy is survived by her son David Reid of Calgary; three grandchildren, Cheryl (Wes) Schroeder, Karin (Dion) Schultz and Graham (Nadia) Reid, all of Calgary; six great-grandchildren, James, Ryan, Daria, Taylor, Natalie and Jared; brother-in-law Gordon Moore and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jack Reid on July 28, 1991; her daughter-in-law Barbara Reid and two brothers, Bill and Bob Turner. Dorothy was born on June 28, 1914 in Calgary. Dorothy and Jack were married in 1938 and were together for fifty-three years. She had a secretarial career which included working for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce for many years. Dorothy enjoyed the outdoors, camping, flowers and the ever present birds, and always had bird seed out for the birds at home. She lived in the Sunalta community her whole life until three and a half years ago when it was required that she move to a seniors' residence. Dorothy enjoyed the company of family and friends for card games and loved preparing family roast beef dinners. Funeral Services will be held at St. Stephen's Anglican Church (1121 - 14 Avenue S.W.) on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. A Family Graveside Service will follow in Queen's Park Cemetery. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff on Unit 72 at the Foothills Medical Centre. WASHOOK, Leslie Ruth (nee Hapko) July 21, 1959 - July 26, 2007 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leslie on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at the age of 48 years. Leslie will be sadly missed by her husband John; children, Donald and Kathleen; father Rudolph Hapko of Winnipeg; her sisters, Gayle Todd (Douglas), Cheryl Hapko, Carol Hapko, Lenore Pelowich (Kerry), and Glenda Hapko, who all live in Winnipeg; father-in-law Steve Washook of Calgary; and sister-in-law Kris Karnes (Benton) of Dallas, Texas. She also leaves to mourn her nieces and nephews, Andrea Moser (Nicholas) and son Rudy of Langdon, North Dakota; Randall Todd of Winnipeg, MB; Casey and Austin Karnes of Dallas, Texas; Tyler Pelowich of Winnipeg; and Stacey Pelowich of Orlando, Florida. Leslie was predeceased by her mother Mary Hapko and mother-in-law Myrtle Washook. Leslie grew up on a farm just outside Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba before moving to Winnipeg to attend Red River Community College where she trained to become a Baker and Cake Decorator. She moved with her family to Saskatoon for six years, back to Winnipeg for a year and to Calgary for the last ten years. Leslie will be fondly remembered as a person who was always actively involved in her number one passion, her family's activities and hobbies. She will also be remembered for the way she enriched her friends' lives and for her artistic talent which is displayed on murals in some of the recreation centers in Calgary. HALASSY, MATILD "EVA" - After a gutsy battle with cancer, the death of Mrs. M. Eva Halassy (Varga) of Champlain Heights, Saint John, N.B, loving wife of Tibor Halassy, occurred with her family at her side at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, N.B on Friday, July 27, 2007. Born in the village of Tata in communist Hungary, April 25, 1938, Eva was the daughter of the late Ilona (Heitz) and Lajos Varga. With great personal risk, she and Tibor fled their homeland to make a new home in Canada, arriving March 3, 1957, pregnant with Sylvia and three year old Judy in tow. She spent her first nine months recuperating in the Saint John Tuberculosis Sanatorium. Following her recovery she went on to open Eva's Beauty Salon which became a Saint John landmark, operating for 43 years. She began in the Ten Eych Hotel, later opening on Union Street where she stayed for 32 years. She will be well remembered by the many hearts and heads she touched with her gentle hands, loving smile and straightforward nature. Eva loved sitting in the sunshine enjoying her garden, watching the History Channel, doing Hungarian crosswords, cheating at cards, but most of all, she loved to feed you. She raised five wonderful children who gave her nine beautiful grandchildren, who were blessed to have such a strong role model touch their lives. Besides her husband, Tibor, with whom she celebrated fifty years of marriage last October, Eva is survived by her three daughters, Judy Halassy (Peter Buckland), Kathy Vautour (Kevin) both of Saint John, NB and Sylvia Reede (Bryce) of Truro, N.S; two sons, Alex (Janice Legere) of Quispamsis, NB and Andrew of Saint John, NB; "Bubby" or "Mimi" will be missed by her grandchildren, Joshua, Dustin, Nicholas, Elliot, Zachary, Maxmillian, Alexander, Noah, and Sophia. Eva is also survived by her brother, Lajos Varga and sister, Zsuzsa Vitai (Varga) both of Tata, Hungary and her loving sister, best-friend and colleague, Marika Dekany (Tibor) of Quispamsis, NB. Also a special cousin, Maria Hegyi of Tata, Hungary; and nephew, Robert; as well as cousins and nieces in Hungary. Eva was also predeceased by her beloved Aunt, Manci. She will be tenderly remembered by us all. He was born in Allardville, N.B. Auguste came to the Sudbury area in 1968 from New Brunswick. He had been a truck driver for various trucking companies for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors and in younger years he fished and hunted. Auguste enjoyed socializing with family and friends. Beloved husband of Annette (Cayer) Boudreau of Sudbury. OBITUARY NORMA ANTONIA (ENGEL) SKLIVAS September 10, 1937 - July 26, 2007 Wife of George Sklivas for almost fifty years. Mother of David (Louise Hurteau), Howard (Julie Mills), Caroline and five grandchildren - Paulina Fauchon, Benjamin, Ryan and Jackie Sklivas and Michael Sklivas. Special grandmother of Alex and Kendra Hughes. Predeceased by her parents Tony and Paulina Engel. Norma completed her secondary education at the Montreal High School for Girls in 1954 and then graduated from the Jewish General Hospital for Nursing in 1957. She was the recipient of the Harriet Blocke Silver Medal for Bedside Nursing. She continued in her nursing career until 1968, leaving it to join her husband in the insurance industry. She established the agency of Groupe Sklivas Incorporated, retiring in 2000. While working in the insurance industry, Norma became involved in the Anglican Church of Canada, becoming a diocesan pastoral visitor and lay reader. She traveled the diocese extensively, preaching, giving workshops, etc. One of her proudest achievements was completing her Master's degree in theological studies at Concordia University in 2000. She was also able to study in the Holy Land at St.George's College in Jerusalem, receiving a diploma in Pilgrimage and Spirituality. Here at home, in 2002, Norma was appointed by Archibishop Andrew Hutcheson to be the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer Diocesan Representative for Montreal and the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada. Norma always enjoyed a healthy and active life. With George (and without) she traveled extensively. She was a member of the Twin Ski Club, the JB Ski Club, the West Island Sports Club and the Summerlea Golf and Country Club. In the year 2000, she returned to the Jewish General Hospital as a volunteer, working in the emergency room. A generous and loving wife, mother and friend, she will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Many thanks to Dr. Jeremy Sturgeon and Nurse Cora of the Montreal General Hospital Oncology Dept., Doctor Sauve and nurse Monique Sasseville of the Vaudreuil-Dorion CLSC and all the doctors, nurses and volunteers of the West Island Palliative Care Centre. Predeceased by her husband John Louis Dubroy, her sister Irene Thaxter Sharpe-Noble, her brother Ross Thaxter (Elva) and survived by his family, nephews David Thaxter (Marion), Dean Thaxter, niece Sharon Thaxter (Ken), her nephew Keith Noble (Pam). Jean is survived by her special niece Lois Noble (Borden), her dear nephew Larry Noble (Lorraine), survived by sisters-in-law Dorothy Killeen and special niece Judi Killeen, Monica and Marguerite Dubroy, and special niece Leslie Cain, as well as many nieces and nephews of the Dubroy families. Maureen was born April 12, 1949 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, grew up and worked most of her life in Ottawa. Maureen was Past President of the Catholic Women's League and Past President of Sigma Phi Sorority. Marthe Michaud 1939-2007 À l'Hôpital Général de Grand-Sault, le samedi 28 juillet 2007, à l'âge de 67 ans, est décédée Marthe Michaud, épouse de George F. Michaud, domiciliée à Grand-Sault. Née à Drummond en 1939, elle était fille de feu Alfred Rivard et de feu Alvine LeBel. Pendant une dizaine d'années, Mme Michaud exercait le bénévolat auprès de divers comités de sa paroisse Saint-Georges de Grand-Sault. Outre son époux, elle laisse dans le deuil trois fils, Mario (Liza) de Dieppe, Yves (Lynn) de Grand-Sault et Daniel de Sackville, son gendre, Gérard Michaud (feu Sylvie) de Grand-Sault, sept petits-enfants, un frère, Jean Rivard (Mildred) de Grand-Sault, quatre soeurs, Marie-Anne Hurtubise (Yvan) et Thérèse Godin de Montréal, Anita Thériault (Charles) et Alma Thériault (Maurice) de Grand-Sault, belles-soeurs, Marie-Louise Rivard et Alma Rivard et beau-frère, Léo Gagnon, ainsi que de nombreux neveux et nièces. Elle a été précédée par sa fille, Sylvie, ainsi que de nombreux frères et soeurs. La dépouille mortelle est exposée au salon Guy O'Regan, 515, boul. Everard Daigle à Grand-Sault. Ses funérailles auront lieu le mardi 31 juillet à 16h en l'église de la paroisse Saint-Georges de Grand-Sault, et l'inhumation au cimetière paroissial. Les heures des visites seront le lundi de 19h à 21h, et le mardi de 14h jusqu'au départ pour les funérailles. JOHNSTON, G. Claire - Grace Claire Johnston, age 89, passed away peacefully at her residence, Roberta Place Nursing Home, Barrie, on Wednesday, July 25, 2007. She was born in Winnipeg, daughter of the late George and Myrtle Hicks and had lived in London until coming to Stratford in 1950. Claire had been a former employee of the Stratford Festival, a Past President of the Rotary Anns, and a member of the Perth Regiment Chapter IODE. She loved playing bridge, was an avid reader and enjoyed many happy summers at their “beloved“ Muskoka cottage. Beloved wife of Allan Frederick Johnston who predeceased her April 14, 1990. Loving mother of Patti Durst and her husband Donald, Barrie, Tom Johnston and his wife Sherry Yundt, Mississauga. Grandmother to her adoring grandchildren Peter Durst and wife Marnie, Emily Durst and husband Jim Hockley, Barrie. Great grandmother of Claire Hockley.
