BREEN, JOHN PATRICK (BUCKE) - of Leo Lane passed away unexpectedly on July 14, 2007. Buck was born in Saint John and was employed for several years as a scaffolder and most recently as a welder at the L. N G. Terminal. He belonged to the Carpenters Union. Survived by his mother, Marry (Diana) Breen (Wallace), Shannon Riley and their son, John Edward Paul Breen; two brothers, Wayne Breen (Jeanne) of Saint John and Richard Breen (Stephanie) of P.E.I.; one sister, Tammy Coombs (Brad) of Grand Bay Westfield; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, John Breen; and baby daughter, Katelyn. Following cremation, visitation will be held at Cavanagh Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 91 Leinster Street (634-1712) on Wednesday July 18, 2007 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. SCHARF, ROBERT F. MD. CM. BA. FRCS(C) SBST. J. - (Surviving Brother of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem), Bridgewater. Born in Saskatoon in 1924, son of the late E. F. Scharf, late president of the Cooperative Union of Sask. and Mabel F. Scharf, late daughter of Charles Beck, pioneer mayor of Yorkton, Sask. and Ellen Riddell Beck, pioneer of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. An honors graduate of Neudorf High School and of Regina College graduate of the University of Saskatchewan with great distinction. Dr. Scharf graduated in medicine from McGill in 1948. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in General Surgery and a certificate in Orthopedics Surgery. He spent 10 years as a Lt. Col. in the Canadian Army. His further career was as a pioneer university emergency department director in Halifax, NS and Saint John, NB as Chairman of the Nova Scotia Trauma Committee of the American College of Surgeons. He organized the first clinical courses for ambulance attendants in NS. He attended four Canada Games and was medical chairman for the 1985 Summer Games in Saint John, NB. University appointments were to the Universities of Ontario, Southern California and Dalhousie NS. He received the Award of Merit of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians. He was a serving brother of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. He was Chairman of the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation's Emergency Cardiac Care Committee and was responsible for putting defibrillators in ambulances in several New Brunswick localities and for wide spread instruction in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. On retirement, he was presented with a certificate of honor by the City of Saint John NB. For services rendered. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Black); children, Michelle (Dennis) Kolba, Calgary, Daniel Michael (Brenda) Scharf, Cambridge, ONT, Laurel (Francis) Joudrey, New Germany, Patricia (Gary) Stone, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Rebecca, Allison and Philip Morley, Calgary; Hannah, Krista and Mikayla Joudrey, New Germany, Thomas and Robert Stone, Dartmouth; brothers, Forest Larry Scharf, Riverside, FL, Charles Ralph Scharf, Thunder Bay, ONT, Murray Patrick Scharf, Saskatoon, SK; sisters, June McFadden, Silvan Lake, AB, Patricia Brown, Calgary, AB. O'NEILL, LAWRENCE DAVID - It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Lawrence David O'Neill, formerly of 10 Ricketts Lane, Rothesay, husband of the late Louise Roberta (McAllister) O'Neill, on Saturday, July 14, 2007. David was born in Saint John on January 5, 1929, a son of the late Lawrence Alexander and Mary Evelyn (O'Leary) O'Neill. David was very actively and passionately involved with the Community Living Board helping to ensure that persons with a development delay were given the support needed for them to live within their community, and served as Chairman of the Board for 20 years. He was a Past Grand Knight of Council 937 Knights of Columbus and had been active as a councillor with the Columbian Squires. He is survived by his 11 children, Larry (Ann-Marie) of Quispamsis, Mary Lou (Claude) Comeau of Rothesay, Ellen (David) Grant of Colbrook, N.S., Kevin (Terry) of Quispamsis, Pat (Lesley) of Saint John West, Maureen O'Neill of Saint John West, Catherine (Tom) Curwin of Quispamsis, Michael (Mary) of Rothesay, Brian of Saint John East, Paul (Tina) of Saint John West, and Carl Sabean of Grand Bay. He was also a very proud grandfather to 23 grandchildren, Ryan, Kelly, Lee, Colin, Lauren, Kale, Rory, Seth, Miranda, Zackery, Madison, Ben, Gillian, Marley, Taylor, and Camryn O'Neill; Kathryn, Michael, and Victoria Grant; Jonathon and Jenna Comeau; and Allison and Caitlynn Curwin. HALLIWELL, Helen Margaret - Helen died peacefully at home during the evening of July 13, 2007, at the age of 95. Helen was born in Cornwall, Ontario on September 10, 1911 and has resided in Cornwall, Kingston, St.Catherines, Temiscaming and North Bay. Helen was predeceased by her husband Percy Nichols Halliwell who died in 1991. Helen is survived by her children; Jane Halliwell-Deer of North Bay, John Halliwell (Mary Lou) of Calgary and Margaret Halliwell (Don MacDonald) of Toronto. Helen will be sadly missed by her eight grandchildren: Natalie, Jennifer and Matthew of Calgary, Emily and Shannon of Toronto and Greg (Maria) of Winnipeg, Shawn (Rhonda) of Waterloo, Susan of Ottawa and by her two great grandchildren Megan and Ethan of Waterloo. Helen is also predeceased by her siblings Leslie Oliver (Martha) of Binghamton, NY and Jessie Liddell (Bill) of St.Catharines. Her family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful care and friendship given to Helen over the last few years by Donna Boal, Janet Parks, Cindy Meir, Cheryl Cormier, Apryl Westaway, Linda Hughes, Linda Davies, Audrey Heward and also wishes to thank Pastor Bob Rittenhouse and his wife Susan for their spiritual support and Dr. Stemp for his medical care. Helen has been a long standing member and active participant as a member of the Baptist Church throughout her lifetime. More recently she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gideon's and the Mission Circle of First Baptist Church in North Bay. Helen, after graduation from Secretarial College, was employed with an Insurance firm in Kingston, until her marriage to Percy in 1937. She was devoted to her family throughout her life and was the anchor and the organizer of many successful family events, occasions and vacations. She loved the outdoors and traveling, camping and cottaging with her family. Helen was also dedicated to pursuing her artistic interests. She was active in expressing herself in fashion, sketching, working in copper, oil painting, water colours and china painting. Cremation will take place at the Forest Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church (1250 Cassells Street) on Thursday, July 19th at 2:00 PM. Friends are invited to join the family for a time of fellowship one hour prior to the service. OBITUARY JERRY CROWE Jerry Crowe passed away in the arms of his loved ones at Credit Valley Hospital on July 13, 2007. At ninety-four he continued to live a vigorous, fulfilling and busy life, but succumbed to severe pneumonia in a short two weeks. Predeceased by his beloved wife Mary (Robertson) and survived by his loving daughter Lib Gibson (Wayne Kilfoyle), granddaughters Leigh and Kerry Gibson and great-granddaughter Jamie Gibson, and step-family Daryn Kilfoyle (April), Megan McNally (Mark) and great-grandchildren Jackson, Abbey and Jessica. Pop's positive attitude, quirky sense of humour, and eagerness for new challenges charmed and inspired all who met him. Jerry had a long and successful career at the Royal Bank. Joining after his graduating Class Prophesy speech caught the eye of the local manager he worked there 40 years until retirement in 1972, except for his service during WWII as a navigator in Ferry Command. Mary and Jerry were avid travellers and Jerry proudly pulled a trailer throughout Canada and the US before settling down to winter in Pompano Beach Florida. Jerry was a fine bridge player, started a bridge club in Florida, became a certified bridge director and teacher in his 70s, and was thrilled to win the few remaining points to become an ACBL Regional Master at the Toronto National Bridge tournament this year, playing with his admiring daughter. Mary and Jerry moved to Erin Mills Lodge in 1999, where Jerry became the heart of the social life of the Lodge and enthusiastically participated in a plethora of activities. Jerry really hit his stride in his 90s - recognized as the ORCA Resident of the Year in 2005 and receiving the Ontario Senior Achievement Award from the Lieutenant General in 2005, as well as being featured in many newspaper and magazine articles. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, as he was always ready with a joke or a sympathetic ear. Family and friends will be received at the Neweduk Funeral Home, 1981 Dundas Street West, Mississauga (NE corner of Dundas St. W. and Erin Mills Parkway) on Tuesday, July 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. Service will be held at the chapel on Wednesday, July 18 at 11 a.m., preceded by an hour with the family. MUNN, WILLIAM (BILL) EUGENE The passing of William (Bill) Eugene Munn, loving husband of Gladys Munn, of Ludlow, N.B. occurred on Friday, July 13, 2007 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on June 16, 1936, he was a son of the late William and Barbara (Price) Munn. Bill attended McNamee Pentecostal Church, was a lifetime member and president of the Upper Miramichi Fireman's Club. He was also a licensed gunsmith. Bill was enrolled with the RCR's as a Para Trooper for 12 years serving two years in Germany and the rest in Canada. He also worked in the Forestry Industry for over 30 years with Russell and Swim Ltd. and J.D Irving Ltd. where he retired at the age of 64. He enjoyed singing, woodworking and was an avid hunter. In addition to his wife, Gladys, Bill is survived by three sons, Stephen (Marlene) Munn of Ludlow N.B, Terry (Chrystal) Munn of Wood River, IL and Rick Munn of Ludlow, N.B; one daughter, Barbara (Vinnie) Hunter of Astle, NB.; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Mackenzie, Jonathan and Kayla;. two brothers, Raymond (Patty) of St. George, N.B and Andrew (Ruby) of Doaktown, N.B.; two sisters, June (Irvine) Connors and Mary (Wes) Munn, both of Doaktown, N.B,; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Munn, of Fredericton, N.B; and several nieces and nephews. These are some of the ingredients in Joyce Coughlin's recipe for a life well lived. Joyce passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2007. All who knew and loved her mourn her loss and celebrate her life. Joyce was born in Toronto in 1934, the youngest of a large and active family. Joyce grew into a family of her own where she was adored by her loving husband Paul, and provided guidance, love, friendship and lifetimes of memories to her three children, Wayne, Warren and Lindy. Joyce also took great joy from her two grandchildren, Mark and Scott, and the memorable times they spent together. She was thrilled that her dreams of happiness for her children were realized through their own loving relationships: Stephanie with Wayne, Rob with Lindy and Nancy with Warren. From Red Hats to dinners, from travel to quiet time at home, from babysitting dogs to babysitting grandkids, hers was a life fully lived and one to be emulated. She will be missed and loved always. HALLIWELL, Helen Margaret - Helen died peacefully at home during the evening of July 13, 2007, at the age of 95. Helen was born in Cornwall, Ontario on September 10, 1911 and has resided in Cornwall, Kingston, St.Catherines, Temiscaming and North Bay. Helen was predeceased by her husband Percy Nichols Halliwell who died in 1991. Helen is survived by her children; Jane Halliwell-Deer of North Bay, John Halliwell (Mary Lou) of Calgary and Margaret Halliwell (Don MacDonald) of Toronto. Helen will be sadly missed by her eight grandchildren: Natalie, Jennifer and Matthew of Calgary, Emily and Shannon of Toronto and Greg (Maria) of Winnipeg, Shawn (Rhonda) of Waterloo, Susan of Ottawa and by her two great grandchildren Megan and Ethan of Waterloo. Helen is also predeceased by her siblings Leslie Oliver (Martha) of Binghamton, NY and Jessie Liddell (Bill) of St.Catharines. Her family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful care and friendship given to Helen over the last few years by Donna Boal, Janet Parks, Cindy Meir, Cheryl Cormier, Apryl Westaway, Linda Hughes, Linda Davies, Audrey Heward and also wishes to thank Pastor Bob Rittenhouse and his wife Susan for their spiritual support and Dr. Stemp for his medical care. Helen has been a long standing member and active participant as a member of the Baptist Church throughout her lifetime. More recently she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gideon's and the Mission Circle of First Baptist Church in North Bay. Helen, after graduation from Secretarial College, was employed with an Insurance firm in Kingston, until her marriage to Percy in 1937. She was devoted to her family throughout her life and was the anchor and the organizer of many successful family events, occasions and vacations. She loved the outdoors and traveling, camping and cottaging with her family. Helen was also dedicated to pursuing her artistic interests. She was active in expressing herself in fashion, sketching, working in copper, oil painting, water colours and china painting. Cremation will take place at the Forest Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church (1250 Cassells Street) on Thursday, July 19th at 2:00 PM. Friends are invited to join the family for a time of fellowship one hour prior to the service.
