POLAND - Walter A. "Bepa" Bilodeau, 89, of Harris Hill Road, died Thursday, Dec. 1, at his home.He was born in Livermore Falls on Sept. 4, 1916, the son of Henry and Georgianna Chicoine Bilodeau. He graduated from Livermore Falls High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.He was married Feb. 8, 1940, to Eva Constantine, who predeceased him on April 24, 1999.Prior to his retirement, he was employed at International Paper in Jay, was a member of the Quarter Century Club and was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 10 in Livermore Falls. He attended Eaton Memorial Methodist Church in Livermore Falls. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed woodworking and making latch-hook rugs.He is survived by a daughter, Pamela Cleaveland and her husband, George, of Poland; a son, Walt Bilodeau of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Sally George and her husband, Rich, Debbie Lorenzano and her husband, Rick, and Ronald Bilodeau and his wife, Marney, all of Phoenix, and Christopher Cleaveland and his wife, Jennifer, of Poland; seven great-grandchildren, Anna, Keli, Anthony, Angela and Kyle, all of Phoenix, and Logan and Emily of Poland; two sisters, Jeannette Hartford of Auburn and Lorraine Ellingwood and her husband, Walter, of Livermore Falls; a brother, Norman Bilodeau and his wife, Bernice, of Livermore Falls.He was predeceased by his wife; a grandson, Andy Cleaveland in 1985; a sister; and three brothers.

SOUTH HADLEY - Raymond J. Cote, 87, of Bartlett St., died at home surrounded by his family, on Dec, 2, 2005. Born Sept. 23, 1918, in Holyoke MA, he was the son of William & Alma (Fortier) Cote. Raymond was raised in Holyoke and has resided in South Hadley for 53 years. He retired in 1980 from the former Community Savings Bank in Holyoke after working as a custodian for 18 years. Raymond previously worked for Croteau Building Movers for 15 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Armandine (Houle) Cote. He leaves seven children: Elaine Ittner and Anita Lengieza of South Hadley, Paul Cote of Sealy, TX, Nancy Archambault of Belchertown, Carol Clark and Susan Whitlatch of Moundsville, W.VA, and Frank Cote of Lakeland, FL. He will also be missed by eight brothers: Gerald of Springfield, Elroy, Earl, Harold, Richard and Harvey all of Chiropee, John of Belchertown, Charles of Easthampton; and three sisters, Gertrude Nichols and Muriel Thibodeau of Chicopee, and Charlotte Piwco of E. Douglas, MA; also 20 grandchildren; and 41 great grandchildren. Raymond was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters. A funeral service will be on Monday at 9:00am from the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, followed by a Mass at 10:00 am in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Granby. Burial is private. Mrs. Comeaux died at 3:41 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at Lafayette General Hospital.Interment will be in Monsignor C.A. Bienvenu Cemetery, Highway 35, Church Point, La. The Rev. Leo Leise, associate pastor of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Church Point, will conduct the services. Mrs. Comeaux is survived by her daughter, Michelle Sullivan, of Church Point, La; her son, James Marcus Comeaux and his wife, Chrystalle, of Church Point, La. Paul Roger Duval, Sr., 79, of Manchester, died December 2, 2005 at his residence. He was born in Manchester, NH on September 15, 1926, the son of Jean-Marie and Elizabeth (Biron) Duval. He had resided in Manchester for most of his life. He attended local Catholic schools and graduated from the Oblate College and Seminary in Natick, MA, in 1950. He pursued graduate studies at Boston College, Boston University and the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He received a Master’s Degree in Education at Northeastern University in Boston in 1967. He was admitted into an Honor Society in Education, Kappa Delta Pi, in the same year. He served in the US Army Reserves. Mr. Duval was employed for many years by the State of NH in various departments that included Public Welfare, Education and the Governor’s Commission on Crime and Delinquency. He also worked for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore and for the Department of Labor in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. He ended his career at the Regional Office of Health and Human Services, Medicaid and Medicare Administration, in 1988. At retirement, Mr. Duval was for many years a volunteer driver for the NH Cancer Society, traveling cancer patients for treatment in numerous skilled and specialized facilities throughout New England. Mr. Duval was predeceased by a daughter, Camille Charbonneau, in 1987. Members of his family include his wife of 52 years, Beatrice M. (Gagnon) Duval of Manchester; two sons, Paul Duval of Manchester and Dr. Jules Duval of Arlington, VA; three daughters, Elizabeth Alexander of Orrington, ME, Valerie Chames and Irene Martineau, both of Manchester; 13 grandchildren; four sisters, Fernande, Therese, Sister Jeanne Duval of the Presentation of Mary, and Annette, all of Manchester; nephews, nieces, and cousins. Calling hours at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St, corner of North St, will be Monday from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. Paul R. Forcier, of Manchester, died December 1, 2005 at his residence after a period of declining health. He was born in Manchester on December 5, 1918, the son of Laurette Senneville. Prior to retirement, Mr. Forcier was employed as a welder by Union Local 474. Bolduc, Betty J.-- Bay City, Michigan-- Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away Thursday, December 1, 2005 at Bay Medical Care Facility at the age of 84. Betty Jean Friday was born August 15, 1921 in Bentley to the late Elmer and Meda (Yanna) Friday. She married Leo N. Bolduc April 22, 1944; he survives her. Betty was devoted to her family and will be greatly missed. Surviving besides Leo, her loving husband of 61 years, are two children, Sandy (Bob) Meeks of CO, and Wayne (Suzanne) Bolduc of Bay City; three grandchildren: Melanie (Jim) Voyles, Jeff Bolduc, and Brian (Jessica) Bolduc and their daughter Jordyn; two sisters Dorothy (Ollie) Amley of Sanford, and Mary Miller of Midland; one brother Jim Friday of Rhodes, and several nieces and nephews. Roland M. Gauthier, of Albion, died Wednesday, November 30, 2005 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. Born August 23, 1934 in Manville, he was the son of the late Narcisse F. & Delores (Rouette) Gauthier. Roland lived in Manville for forty years before making his home in Albion. He had worked as a salesperson at Bellingham Electric, Bellingham, MA for eight years before retiring in October 2005 due to illness. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was the Past Commander of the Alphonse Yell American Legion Post #9 in Manville & Past Commander of North Lincoln Volunteer Ambulance Corps. He is survived by his Companion; Mario Correia of East Providence, two sons; Marc Gauthier of Albion & Eugene Gauthier of Manville, two daughters; Denise Lambert of Providence & Jacqueline Smith of West Warwick, and a foster son; David Reed of Franklin, MA., and ten grandchildren. SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - Adeline Landry Shumaker, 77, of Dunwoody, Atlanta, Ga. died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005.Born May 28, 1928, in Breaux Bridge, La. and a native of Lafayette, La., she was the daughter of the late Edgar d'Acourt and Abby Eve Landry. Formerly a resident of Sumter, S.C. and Durham, N.C., she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William George Shumaker. Mrs. Shumaker attended Southern Louisiana Institute and served several years as a long distance operator with AT&T and Southern Bell Tele-phone prior to being a homemaker for 55 years. LEWISTON - Murielle L. Laverdiere, 68, of 29 Union St., Lewiston, died Thursday evening, Dec. 1, at Central Maine Medical Center surrounded by her loving family, following a long illness.She was born in Lewiston on Jan. 13, 1937, the daughter of Aime and Rachel (Deslauriers) Mercier and had been a resident of this community all of her life.She was educated at St. Peter's School and was a graduate of St. Dominic's Regional High School Class of 1954.She and her husband Raymond owned and operated Able Power Rooter for many years. She also taught adult swimming lessons at the YWCA in Lewiston for 25 years.Murielle was an active member of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and the Sabattus Senior Citizens. She loved swimming and reading. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family and friends.She is survived by her husband, Raymond Laverdiere, whom she married on June 8, 1957, of Lewiston; one daughter, Anita Richards and her husband, Timothy, of Auburn; three sons, Ronald Laverdiere of Lewiston, Richard Laverdiere and his wife, Kelly, of Lewiston, and Roland Laverdiere and his wife, Kimberly, of Greene; two sisters, Aurore Boulette of Lewiston and Pauline Bourgoin and her husband, Joseph, of Sabattus; one brother, Antonin Mercier and his wife, Grace, of Greene; five grandchildren, Melissa Leavitt and her husband, Jamison, of Minot, Ryan Richards and his wife, Mihoko, of Lewiston, Lysa Laverdiere of Lewiston and Riley and Lotus Laverdiere of Greene; and several nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by one brother, Laurent Mercier.

Normand C. Pepin, 73, of Merrimack died Thursday Dec. 1, 2005 at Elliot Hospital in Manchester after a long illness. Mr. Pepin was born May 3, 1932 in Nashua and was the son of the late Camille and Beatrice (Soucy) Pepin. He was raised and educated in Nashua, a graduate of Nashua High School, and a lifelong resident of the Nashua/Merrimack area. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.Mr. Pepin was a firefighter with the Merrimack Fire Department for 27 years. He was also a tank truck driver with Rochette’s Oil service of Merrimack. He was a member the NH State Fire Wardens Association, a 40 year member of American Legion Post 98 and a member of VFW Post 8641, both of Merrimack, and was very active in the Merrimack community. Members of the family include his wife of 50 years, Florence (Beausoleil) Pepin of Merrimack, a son- Bruce Pepin of Merrimack, a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Tom Kryander of Pittsfield, NH., 3 grandchildren- Ryan MacDonald of Belmont, NH, Nathan MacDonald and his wife Yuko of Japan, and Sean Kryander of Pittsfield, NH., 4 sisters and 2 brothers-in-law- Madeline Miller of Merrimack, Jean and James Dutton, of Naples, FL. Patricia L. Campeau, 69, of Wesley Chapel, FL, formerly of Cheshire, passed away on Wednesday, (November 16, 2005) after a three year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born on August 6, 1936 in Torrington, daughter of the late Edmund and Mary (Columbie) Perkins. Pat moved to Cheshire in 1962 from Torrington where she resided until 2004. She was active for many years working for the American Red Cross during bloodmobile drives. She was also a member of the Red Cross Disaster Committee. Pat worked at Compuweigh Corp. and later at Bozzuto's Inc. where she was Benefits Administrator until retiring in 2004. She leaves two daughters, Lori J. Campeau of Wesley Chapel, FL, Shari Cardozo and son-in-law Manny Cardozo of Tampa, FL; a son, John C. Campeau, Jr. of New Haven; a sister, Maurie Harrington and brother-in-law, Jack Hanington of Killington VT; four beautiful grandchildren, Manuel, Sarah, Benjamin and Hannah Cardozo. She also leaves three nephews; a niece and many cousins. A celebration of her life will be held at Slater Funeral Home, 242 South Main Street, Cheshire on Monday, December 5, from 5-8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at Epiphany Church at 1750 Huckins Rd., Cheshire, on Tuesday, December 6, at 10 a.m. Burial will be immediately following at St. Bridget's Cemetery, Cheshire. Rita E. (Poirier) Prisby, 72, wife of the late Walter A. Prisby, died Thursday evening (December 1, 2005) at her daughter's home in Kensington, NH after a long illness. Born in Newburyport on August 23, 1933 she was the daughter of the late Alcide A. and Estelle (Turgeon) Poirier. Mrs. Prisby and her husband were married in the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Ipswich, MA in 1954 and they were communicants of the church until its closure in 1997. Mr. and Mrs. Prisby were active members of St. Stanislaus' Adult Choir. After the closure Mr. and Mrs. Prisby became communicants of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Ipswich. They also became active members of Our Lady of Hope's Adult Choir. Mrs. Prisby was an avid knitter and was a member of the Prayer Shawl Knitters Club of Our Lady of Hope Church. She was also an active member of the lpswich Family Y.M.C.A. She was a Den Mother of the Cub Scouts Troop# 144 of St. Stanislaus' Church. Mrs. Prisby was very involved with all of her grandchildrens' activities, her grandchildren meant the world to her. Mrs. Prisby was predeceased by her husband on April 13, 2003. Mrs. Prisby is survived by her five children and their spouses, Walter A. "Bud" Jr. and Elaine Prisby of Amston, Bonnie M. and Daniel Provost of Kensington, NH, Pamela A. and Bob Levesque of Salem, MA, Timothy A. and Doreen Prisby of No. Andover, MA, Steven M. and Denise Prisby of Cape Neddick, ME; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Poirier of Hampton, NH and Jack Poirier of Seabrook, NH; a sister, Edna Fyrberg of Gorham, ME; and many nieces and nephews. LOWELL -- Roland A. Rochette, 75, a lifelong Lowell resident who worked for the city for more than three decades, died Thursday, Dec. 1, at Lowell General Hospital, following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late M. Pauline (Demers) Rochette.He was born in Lowell, April 17, 1930, son of the late Thomas J. and Ecephise (Doucette) Rochette. He attended Lowell schools and was a communicant of the former Ste. ORANGE— Richard A. Salois, 62, of 51 Carpenter Street, died Friday, December 2, 2005 at home surrounded by family. He was born in Lawrence on May 13, 1943, the son of Eugene and the late Mildred (Frederickson) Salois. He grew up in Lawrence and North Andover where he attended both parochial and public schools until joining the U. S. Navy in September of 1962. He served two years aboard the carrier USS Independence as an Airman, thus beginning a 40 year career in the military. When the Nike Hercules Missle sites closed in 1974, Mr. Salois went to Ft. Devens to do maintenance and administration with 726th MTBN. In 1985, he became AGR Readiness NCO with the FSB in Wayland. He served as Maintenance Sgt., Intelligence Sgt., Platoon Sgt., Readiness NCO and Senior Logistician for 114th FWD support BN in Clinton and Webster. In June of 1994, Mr. Salois retired from the U.S. Army, but stayed with the National Guard and retired from the 747 MP Co. in Southbridge in May, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Miffy (Verheyen) of Orange; father, Eugene H. Salois of Derry, NH; and four sons, Richard A. Salois of Portland, ME, John A. Salois of Hoboken, NJ, Michael R. Salois of Merrimack, NH, and Daniel S. Salois of Hampton, NH; stepchildren, Esther E. Hazzard of Worcester, Eddie Verheyen of Athol, Kara Scott of Alburquerque, NM, and Dorothy J. Verheyen and Charles Verheyen, both of Orange; sixteen grandchildren; and two great grandchildren; brothers, Eugene H. Salois, Jr. of Cape Cod, Albert E. Salois of Leesburg, FL, Dennis Salois of Derry, NH, and Gus J. She went on to study occupational and respiratory therapy in Massachusetts. For several years she was employed with the Peabody Home in Franklin and later worked with the Visiting Nurse Association of Franklin for many years. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Franklin.Of her, her family wrote, "She loved her family, animals, and nature. Her passion for life and spirit of giving deeply touched everyone who knew her."Her family includes her husband, John A. Masse of Franklin; her son, Robert R. COLCHESTER- Richard Allan Gauvin, 71, of School Road, Colchester, and formerly of Bath, ME, passed away Thursday evening (Dec. 1, 2005) after a courageous battle with cancer. Born July 7,1934 in Bath, ME, he was a son of the late Leo J. and Doris E. (Pierce) Gauvin.He attended schools in Bath, ad in 1951 enlisted in the Navy, serving during the Korean War until his discharge in 1955. Following his service, he worked for the Bath Iron Works and studied Electrical Engineering at Southern Maine Vocational Institute in South Portland. In 1962, he went to work as a draftsman for 33 years at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Connecticut until his retirement. On 1972, he wed the former Lois Day of New Sharon, ME and in March of 1974, they welcomed their son, Brian. In his spare time, Richard was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, skiing, golf and competitive sailing and was an active follower of UCONN Basketball.He was a communicant of St. Andrew's Church in Colchester and grew up in St. Mary's Parish in Bath, where he also joined the Knights of Columbus.Survivors include his son and daughterinlaw, Brian and Betsy Gauvin of Plymouth Meeting, PA; his former wife, Lois Gauvin of Colchester; his sister, Susan Adam of New York City; two brothers, Raymond and wife, Louise Gauvin of Brunswick, ME and David Gauvin of Bath, ME; and numerous extended family members and friends.In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert.In Connecticut, friends may call 2 - 4 PM TODAY (Saturday) at the AuroraMcCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester.In Maine, friends may call 68 PM Monday at the David E. Thelma E. (Peggy) Bessette Steward, 90, 316 W. 14th St., Kaukauna, passed away Dec. 1, 2005. Mrs. Steward was born in the township of Deer Creek, Wis., on Oct. 10, 1915, the third child of Charles and Caroline (Kluge) Bessette. She was educated in Kaukauna and spent most of her adult life in the Clintonville and Appleton areas. Peggy married Harold J. Steward on April 30, 1932, in Appleton. They were married 73 years before his death in May of 2005. Peggy spent most of her working life as a seamstress, retiring from Zwickers Knitting Mill of Appleton. Peggy's leisure time was spent crocheting, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, bowling, fishing and traveling. She is survived by her daughters, Carol (Gerald) Soufal, Shawano; Valerie (John) Geer, Neenah; their sons, William (Patricia), Freedom; James (Sue), Green Bay; Robert, Appleton. Peggy is further survived by her sisters, Pearl (Arnold) Abel and Lorraine Grunert; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold; daughter, Linda; parents, Charles and Caroline Bessette; brothers, Abraham and Vernard; sisters, Isabelle LeNoble and Lucille Lodholz. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1810 N. McDonald, Appleton with Fr. Jerome Falk officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass. HOLLY HILL - Rose B. Metivier, 93, of Dubs Drive, who retired as a cafeteria manager in 1974 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., died Thursday at Daytona Beach Health and Rehabilitation Center, Daytona Beach. Born in New Bedford, Mass., Mrs. Metivier, came to this area in 1974 from Poughkeepsie. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. She enjoyed crocheting and playing bingo and the lottery. Survivors include two daughters, Rose Albano, Holly Hill, and Alice Hoyt, Port Orange; two sisters, Beatrice Hogarth, New Bedford, and Jeanette Pfitscher, Poughkeepsie; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Metivier, 93, who left on her journey to heaven on December 1, 2005. She had resided on Dubs Drive, Holly Hill, with her daughter, Rose Albano, for several years prior to her year and a half stay at Daytona Beach Health and Rehab Nursing Home because of her decline due to Alzheimer's Disease. Rose was born September 8, 1912, in New Bedford, Mass., and was one of nine children of Sinai and Bertha Dubois. In her early years she worked at Hathaway Textile Mills in New Bedford along with several of her siblings. In 1933, she married George Metivier, who predeceased her in 1964 just prior to their 31st wedding anniversary. In the mid 1950s, her family moved to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to be near her oldest daughter, Alice, and her family. In Poughkeepsie, she worked many years in manufacturing companies and was also the cafeteria manager for many years at Lucky, Platt & Co. department store. In 1974, she retired to Holly Hill to live by her daughter, Rose, son-in-law, Bob, and their two children, Bob and Jodi. While living in Poughkeepsie and Holly Hill, she enjoyed playing bingo several times a week up until her mid eighties when her failing eyesight caused her to stop. Her family always knew what one of her gifts would be for her birthday and other holidays lottery tickets! Though not a winner of anything large, even a small payoff put a large smile on her beautiful face. Rose was a wonderful, caring and giving mother, grandmother and person in general. She always thought of her family before herself. Her presence will be missed so greatly in so many ways by so many people. She leaves behind two daughters, Rose Albano, Holly Hill, who provided for her care on a daily basis, and Alice Hoyt, Port Orange. She was grandmother to nine grandchildren. Locally, grandson Bob (Pam) Albano, Ormond Beach, and granddaughter, Jodie Albano, South Daytona, paid constant attention to their grandmother with their love and also shared in her care and needs. In Poughkeepsie, granddaughter Phyllis (Jack) Anderson, and grandson, Philip Fredrickson, though many miles away, showed their love and concern as well. The remaining grandchildren live in various areas of the country. Rose had 13 great-grandchildren. Locally, great-grandson, Bobby Albano, who referred to his great-grandmother as Meme', brought many smiles to her face as well as a few lectures on behaving. In New Paltz, N.Y., great-granddaughter, Christine (Josh) Parker kept current on the condition of her great-grandmother and recently presented her with a great-great-grandchild, Kyle, born last month. There are also two surviving sisters, Beatrice Hogarth, New Bedford, Mass., and Jeanette Pfitscher, Poughkeepsie. Extended family members include Cathy O'Brien and her sons, Cory and Sean, who also paid special attention to Rose. The one thing that gives her loved ones some solace in Rose's passing is that she is going home to be with God and will be reunited with all the family members and friends that have passed before her and that she will finally be free of the ravishing and debilitating affects of Alzheimer's Disease which robbed her mind and body of so much. Her family will miss this wonderful woman who asked for so very little, yet whose heart of gold gave so very much. May God bless her always and St. Jude, her patron saint, guide her "home" quickly. Special thanks to Steve McGrath from St. Paul's Church who visited her every Sunday for prayers and Holy Communion. Thanks, too, to her physician, Dr. Yu Ho Wong, and to all her caregivers at Daytona Beach Health and Rehab, who loved and took care of her in spite of her "Bruce Lee" antics. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 4, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A Celebration of Her Life will be Monday, December 5, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Pinello Funeral Home, 1036 Derbyshire Rd., Daytona Beach. Entombment will follow at Shady Rest Cemetery, Holly Hill. DEVLIN; Catherine Lee Devlin; Catherine-51 years of age of 38 Adolphus Street, Cornwall, Ontario, died Saturday, December 3, 2005, surrounded by love in its purest form after a brave battle with cancer. Born January 27, 1954 to the late George Blacklock and Leona Miller Blacklock. Catherine grew up and spent most of her working life in Cornwall. She moved to Wolfe Island, Ontario in 1996, fell in love and married, Kevin Devlin. She also accomplished a life long goal when she opened her own hairstyling salon naming it “The Island Sunroom“, Catherine was an Angel in the truest definition of the word, making friends, such as Sherry Smith and touching hearts with her kind and gentle nature. She adored children and their innocence. Possibly her most notable accomplishment was being a caring, understanding, best-friend and most trusted confidante to her own children, Shawna Laurin (Gerry), Brooke McIntosh (Holly) and Katie Prieur. Catherine a.k.a “Momma Moo's“ playful spirit will live on forever in her grandchildren, Bailey and Cameron. Catherine was a baby sister to Ralph Blacklock (Ulana), Judy Poirier (Richard) and the late Patricia Fry (John). GRAND COTEAU - Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Grand Coteau, La. for Leonard Lagneaux, 97, who died at 9:40 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at his residence in Sunset, La.Interemnt will be in St. Charles Church Mausoleum in Grand Coteau, La. The Rev. James Lambert, S.J., of St. Charles Catholic Church in Grand Coteau, will officiate the services. Mr. Leonard was a veteran of World War II and served as a Major in the Army Quarter Masters Corps. He was stationed in Brooklyn, N.Y. during the entire war and was in complete charge of shipping supplies to our troops in the European Theatre of Operations.Mr. Lagneaux dearly loved his country and wanted to be part of the War effort. His military service in the Army was one of the highlights of his life. While in the Army he received the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.Mr. Lagneaux graduated from Ames College in the state of Iowa. Before the war, he attended S.L.I. in Lafayette and excelled in Track & Field.He retired from the Federal Government and State Govern- ment as a Ag. Inspector in the field of fruit and vegetables.His grandfather and grand-mother came to the United States from Belgium in 1890 on a cattle boat. To pay their way here their job was to clean the boat each and every day. They would have done just about any-thing to come to America be-cause here they would be free people to do as they feel and make a good living as farmers in a new and free society.His grandfather, Auguste Lagneaux was the ancedent of all the Lagneaux's who now reside in South Louisiana.Mr. Auguste became a very prominent farmer in Lafayette Parish after many years of hard work. The fruits of his work were passed down to his children and many grandchildren.Mr. Leonard and Ms. Shirley were married for 66 beautiful years. Although they never had children of their own they were like parents to their many nieces and nephews and students that Ms. Shirley taught while teach-ing in public schools in St. Land-ry Parish.Mr. Leonard will be greatly missed by his wife, family, friends and all who knew and loved him.Fort Polk will provide an honorary guard service at the grave- side.Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Shirley Richard Lagneaux, of Sunset, La.; his two sisters, Edith Millet and Solange Watson, both of Duncan, Okla. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Firmin and Francois Divoy Lagneaux; two brothers, Jerry and Irvin Lagneaux; and two sisters, Jeanne McCol-lum and Martha Nini.Visitation will be observed from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, and will continue from 8 a.m. Monday until time of services. "Splash," as he was called by all who knew him, attended parochial schools in Mexico and Rumford and was a member of the Class of 1937 at Stephens High School in Rumford.He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and proudly served four years with the 549th Artillery Field Battalion in the European Theater with the rank of corporal.Arthur married Mary A. Fleming, a registered nurse, in 1946, and celebrated 59 years of marriage on May 27. Together they raised four children, three boys and a girl.He worked for the Oxford Paper Co. (later Boise Cascade), retiring from the steam plant in 1981, after an automobile accident.Splash and Mary then moved to beautiful Venice, Fla., where they resided on and off for many years. They returned to Maine, living in Auburn for 15 years, then settling in Turner for three years, before returning to Rumford in September 2001, where they have resided at Holyoke Avenue ever since.Splash's love of sports, especially baseball and football, eventually led to his greatest passion of all, golf. He loved Oakdale Country Club and Prospect Hill and had a great time playing and laughing with his buddies.Arthur lost both of his legs but never his sense of humor, and he will be greatly missed by family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW and was a communicant of St. Athanasius & St. John Catholic Church.Survivors include his wife Mary A. Gallant; sons, Lance and wife, Susan, Lee and wife, Kathy, and Larry and wife, Tammy, all of Rumford; a daughter, Lisa Fowler of Rumford; two sisters, Priscilla Simmonds of Rumford and Dorothy Holmquist of Peru; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Gallant of Florida; 10 grandchildren, Brian Fowler, USCG, of Nantucket, Kristen Fowler, senior at UMF, Sarah Fowler of Eliot, Brad Gallant and wife, Liza, of Waterville, Jane Clukey and husband, Brock, of Andover, Brittany Gallant of Wilton, Makenzie Gallant of South Rumford, and Alexander and Danel Gallant of Rumford, both attending schools in Canada; stepdaughter, Angela Powell-Madigan and husband, John, of Lyman; great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Clukey of Andover; favorite niece, Faylene Turnbull and husband, John; nephews, Donald Simmonds of Connecticut, Wayne Gallant of Rumford and Gary Gallant of Florida.He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Theresa; a brother, Edward; and a grandson, Michael Gallant.

GILL, Mass. — Joseph A. Girard of Gill, Mass. died on Dec. 1, 2005 at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital after a short illness. He was born on Oct. 8, 1919 in Turners Falls, Mass. He was the youngest of six children of Joseph D. Girard and Marie L. (Brazeau) Girard. He was educated through the 8th grade at St. Anne's Parochial School and graduated from Turners Falls High School in 1938. During his high school years he was employed by Socquet's Hillside Dairy Farm. Later, he worked at Montague Rod and Reel. He was a machinist at the Springfield Armory prior to entering the US Army Air Corps in 1942 as a radio repairman. He was honorably discharged in 1945 after a tour of duty that took him through North Africa, Sicily, Corsica, Italy, and the South of France where he also served as an interpreter for the U.S. Army. In 1946, he married Elaine Whittemore George of Stowe, Vt. who died in 1990. After moving to Gill in 1951, he worked for Stotz Electrical as an electrician and later was hired by Western Massachusetts Electric Company where he worked for many years in sales. Because of his extensive knowledge of the geography Western Massachusetts, he was known as the company "bird dog," helping line crews find downed power lines during storms. He received an Associate Degree in business from Greenfield Community College in 1972. After retiring from WMECo in 1981, he continued to work in electrical consulting through the mid 1990's. During this period, he also worked as building inspector for the towns of Gill, Bernardston, and Northfield. For years, each spring, he, his wife and family enjoyed making maple syrup in Gill. He loved woodworking and woodcutting, and gentleman farming on his property. He completely modernized a 200 year old home in Gill and he and Elaine were vital, engaged members of the community. He was a master electrician and an accomplished carpenter. He loved farming and he was avid conservationist, sportsman, and woodsman. He served the town of Gill on the school committee and the planning board, he was a town constable, a selectman and he was town moderator for many years. He also was a representative member of the Council on Aging.He is survived by one sister, Ernestine LePine of Montague, Mass. and his four children; Susanne Morgan of Cumberland, R.I., Richard of Somerset, Mass., Noreen Lemieux of Gill, Mass., and Nancy Girard of Gilmanton. He has seven grandchildren: Amanda and Alexandra Morgan, Jonathan and Timothy Girard, Seth Lemieux and Kelsey and Cameron Girard Graaskamp, and numerous nieces and nephews.Funeral services, all in Turners Falls, Mass., will be Tuesday Dec. 6 at 9:15 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Anne's Church with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Anne's Cemetery.Calling hours will be held on Monday, Dec. 5 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.Any memorial donations should be made to ALS Mass.
