OWEN LINDSAY Owen Fenwick Lindsay, born June 30, 1917 in Tugaski, Sask., passed away in Atikokan Hospital in Atikokan, Ont. on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005. He was raised on a farm by hard-working parents during many years of drought, hailstorms, sandstorms, and insect infestations. Observing and experiencing the hardships of those early years began the formation of his belief in social justice and a caring society for all. As a young adult, Owen worked at a variety of jobs, farming, truck driving, mining in the Yukon, and building planes in Fort Erie. In 1945, he moved to Atikokan with his wife, Edith, to work as a mechanic at Steep Rock Iron Mines. There, he was active in the United Steel Workers local as shop steward and president. He was instrumental in promoting health and safety standards at a time when few such programs existed. He also was chair of the union committee that built the union hall and bowling alley. He was on the first Board of Governors of the Atikokan General Hospital, which replaced the original Red Cross outpost with the hospital in Don Park, and later served as the chair of the board, all the time working for universal health care through political action. Owen eventually left mining to open Lindsay’s Home Furnishings, where he and his wife, Edith, worked together for many years. During that time, he became active on the executive of the Chamber of Commerce working in tourism promotion. Elected to the Atikokan School Board, he became the first chairman when Atikokan became a township. He achieved his goal at the time to raise Atikokan teachers’ salaries from one of the lowest in Ontario to the highest and, in turn, attracted exceptional teachers. He was an early chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee, which provided recreational activities for the growing community. In 1965, he became an industrial millwright and worked on various locations across Canada until 1984, when he retired at 67 years of age. Following his retirement, he initiated the formation of the Atikokan Energy Conservation Committee and became its chair. Atikokan was chosen as one of three pilot projects in Ontario to initiate community-based energy conservation projects. One of his last active volunteer commitments was as Chairman of the Non-Profit Housing Committee which built the River Terrace seniors’ apartments. He was an active member of the CCF and the New Democratic Party, and worked on every provincial and federal election since 1943, including running as a candidate in 1959 and 1963. But his greatest pride was his children and grandchildren. His assistance on their many renovation projects, support and attendance at their year-round activities, and summers with them at Eva Lake—fishing, boating, planting trees, blueberry picking, political debating, and sharing recipes—brought him great joy. Owen was pre-deceased by his wife, Edith, in 1998; son-in-law, Ed Johnson in 1997; brother, Don in 2003; and grandson, Adam, in August, 2005. He is survived by his three children, Marlene Lindsay (Iain Angus) of Thunder Bay, Ont., Colin Lindsay (Linda) of Atikokan, Ont., and Heather Johnson of Kamloops, B.C.; grandchildren, Laura Gatto (Peter) of Guelph, Ont., Sarah Young (Jamie) of Atikokan, Ont., Cal Lindsay (Ann) of Guelph, Ont., Rebecca Augier of Hamilton, Ont. Raymond Lindsay (Melanie) of London, Ont., Patrick Lindsay (Diane) of Fernie, Robin McKinley (Matt) of Kamloops, B.C., and Sue DeGrazia (Mike) and Christie Johnson of Thunder Bay, Ont.; and 16 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two brothers, Hugh (Helen) of Morgantown, West Virginia, and Albert (Grace) of Thornhill, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Owen believed and lived the following quote by Tommy Douglas: “Courage my friends, ‘tis not too late to make a better world.” Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 4, 2005 at 1 p.m. at Riverview United Church in Atikokan. In lieu of flowers, Owen requested that donations be made to the Atikokan General Hospital or to a charity of your choice.

GILFORD -- Edward R. Bouley, 77, of Rockwood Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005, at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia. He was born Oct. 21, 1928, in Nashua, the son of Arthur Jack and Louise (LaPlante) Bouley. He lived most of his life in the Nashua/Hudson area before moving to the Lakes Region in 1990. He was an optician and was in business with his brother, Dr. Paul Bouley, and Dr. Eliot Lasky for many years. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Lakes Church in Lakeport. He was a former communicant and choir member of St. Joseph Church in Nashua. He was very active with the New Hampshire Mental Health Alliance in Nashua for many years. He was a ham radio operator and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Loretta (LeBlanc) Bouley of Gilford; a daughter, Linda Noel Fairbanks of Winnisquam; two sons, David E. Bouley of Merrimack and Russell P. Bouley of Gilford; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. at the carriage house at Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lakes Church, 50 Washington St., Lakeport. Terry James Comeaux, 54, of Port Arthur, TX died November 5, 2005 in his residence. Mr. Comeaux was born in Acadia Parish and had lived in the Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas areas. He was a 1968 graduate of Lake Charles High School and attended McNeese State, Louisiana State University and the University of South Western Louisiana. He worked in electrical sales for many businesses throughout Southwest Louisiana, Beaumont and Houston, TX areas and was currently working for Wholesale Electric in Beaumont, TX for the past 5 years. He never met a stranger in life. Mr. Comeaux's passion was life and music. Survivors include his father Walter L. GILL - Janet "Jan" M. (Hebert) lata, 56, of 29 Mountain Road, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005 at home peacefully after a long battle with cancer. Janet (Hebert) Lata was born June 5, 1949 in Chicopee, daughter of the late Armand and Alice (Houle) Hebert. She graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield and from Springfield Technical Community College with a degree in communications. In 1981 Janet and husband Mitchell moved to Gill and purchased a liquor store. Soon after they opened an automobile dealership. They owned and operated Jan's Package Store and Mitchell Motors in Gill for the past 24 years. Janet enjoyed traveling, boating, antiques, flea markets, flower gardening, bird watching, reading, and life itself. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. The employees, customers and Gill community became part of her extended family and she touched and was touched by many. PLAINS - Gary Dean LaRoque, 71, passed to his Savior and Great Spirit on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, in Plains.Gary was a kind and loving man to all his family and friends. Those of us blessed to have known him lost our symbol for compassion that day. Through his spirit, he will guide us to our own understanding of compassion.A "Farm Boy" in rural Alexander, N.D., Gary helped his parents, Doris and Ernie LaRoque, toil the land in the '50s. He and his family moved to Missoula in 1966. Motorcycle racing was an early passion, mixed with building hot rods, including his 1936 Ford five-window rumble seat coupe. He acquired his coupe in his teens, made it work and restored it in his early '40s. His car often made its way to work at Ron's Auto Refinishing, where he worked for 32 years as a body man and painter.Gary's love for humans spilled over to his love for animals. He knew they could reason and loved them, too!Many extraordinary things can be said of Gary, but he was a man who just did and let others make of it what they would. Gary would concur with his late father, Ernie, "Too many of us become enraged because we have to bear the shortcomings of others. We should remember that none of us are perfect and that others see our defects as obviously as we see theirs. We forget too often to look at ourselves through the eyes of our friends. Let us therefore bear the shortcomings of each other for the ultimate benefit of everyone."Gary is survived by Margaret LaRoque; his only son, Kurt and his wife Roxanne; his three beautiful and gifted daughters, Cindy Hall and her husband Mike, Linda Schell and her husband Ray and Sandra LaRoque; his mother, Doris LaRoque, 93, who celebrated her birthday Oct. 7, with family and her oldest son, Gary. His daughters Cindy and Linda sang for their grandma, but Gary was so touched by the beauty of his daughters and their gift for music, he headed back to Plains with tears of joy.Gary was the oldest of two brothers, Jerry "Buddy" LaRoque and his wife Tisha and David LaRoque and his wife Tammy. Gary has five grandchildren, one new great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.Visitation will be held from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Garden City Funeral Home. Ella Gallagher Ross age 93 widow of Colin, her husband of 52 years. Dear mother of Margaret Ross, Mary Carson (Gerry Hooper) and Penny Ross. Loving grandmother of Craig, Carolyn and Derek Carson; David and Megan Hooper. Predeceased by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Ella's journey began 93 years ago in St. Jules de Cascapedia on the Gaspe coast. She became a successful and respected elementary school teacher, first in Arvida and later in Montreal. She spent her last years in Ottawa surrounded by her family. In her retirement, her passion for needlepoint resulted in a legacy of over 100 petit point pictures that grace the homes of her children and many others. Ella will be greatly missed, forever remembered and always loved but we are comforted in the knowledge that she is at peace. We would like to extend our profound thanks to Dr. John Russell and Dr. Lila Graham and the staff of St. Patrick's Home for the wonderful care they provided our mother. ANDRE JOSEPH MARTEL SR. BURLINGTON — Andre J. Martel Sr., 45, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005. He was born in Burlington on Dec. 16, 1959, the son of Clement J. and Dolores A. (Boucher) Martel. He worked at the former General Electric plant and was an expert mechanic and carpenter. He took great pride in using his skills to bring his various projects and ideas into reality. His humorous personality will live on in the hearts of all whom he touched. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, son and brother who will be sorely missed by all his surviving family and friends including his two daughters, Tracey Martel of Burlington and Amy Martel of Las Vegas, Nev.; his son, Andre Martel Jr. of Burlington; two grandsons, Christopher and Jaydyn and an expected granddaughter, Brooklyn; three brothers; two sisters; much extended family; and his longtime girlfriend, Donna “Jeanie“ of Burlington. Pomerleau, 60, of Somersworth, N.H. died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, surrounded by loved ones at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after an accidental fall.He was born July 4, 1945, and was the youngest of 10 children. He grew up in Gonic, graduated from Spaulding High School and served as a radio man in the U.S. Navy for three years.A devoted husband and father, he found pleasure in the simple things in life — fishing with his boys, stopping each morning for coffee and scratch tickets at the Bread and Butter, jamming with his countless musician friends and relatives, and telling anyone who would listen, how much he loved his wife, Kathy Dell Isola.At first glance one might have found Dan to be rough around the edges. Those that knew him well would, however, tell you of his gentle soul and his goodness of heart.His passion in life was his music and he was well known around the Seacoast region as an accomplished musician who was humbled by his God-given talent. Over the years, he played with the Del Rays, the Dave Nappy Band, 4 Hits and a Miss, the Freeborn Band, and the Studebakers; was a studio musician for Gordon Lightfoot; and recorded with the Blarney Stones in Cleveland.He was predeceased by his mother, Elsie Pomerleau; his father, Joseph N. Pomerleau; his brothers, William and Ernest, and his daughter, Caitlin. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Kathy Dell Isola; his sons Danny, John, Aron and his wife, Catrina; his daughters, Danielle Perreault and her husband, Roger; Aimee Wade and her husband, Bill; Hilary Pomerleau; Justin Zaetz, who Dan cared for as much as a son; and his grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Chloe, Alison, Nicole, and Joshua. BOUCHARD, VIRGINIA, 78, of St. Petersburg, died Monday (Nov. 7, 2005) at St. Anthony's Hospital. She was born in Augusta, Maine, and moved here in 1960. For many years she was a nurses aide and worked at St. Anthony's, St. Petersburg General, and Metropolitan Hospitals. She also worked at Sam's Club and Wal-Mart as a food demo associate. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Al, St. Petersburg; two daughters, Kathleen Brown, Clearwater, and Bonnie Crabtree, St. Petersburg; three brothers, Bruce, Roland and Earl Dyer, all of Augusta; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. AGAWAM - Roland W. Gagne, 84, a 33-year Agawam resident and formerly of Springfield, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. Roland was born in Holyoke on October 21, 1921 a son of the late William and Eva (Dubuc) Gagne. He attended Springfield schools and graduated from the former Springfield Trade High School. Roland retired from Jet Tool in Agawam and had previously been employed at several local machine shops. He was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran serving aboard the U.S.S. Alaska, and receiving the WWII Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with 2 stars, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. Roland was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Agawam and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid bowler and golfer, and also would go downhill skiing with his daughter Suzanne. He also enjoyed the beach and the ocean, be he received the most enjoyment watching the Boston Red Sox, of whom he was an avid fan. Roland was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (Boisvert) Gagne, in 1993; and a brother, Raymond Gagne. He is survived by his son, Ronald W. Gagne and his wife Jean of Longmeadow; a daughter, Suzanne Prestia and her husband Clifford J. Prestia, M.D. of Wilbraham; four grandchildren, Kara Gagne, Jana Healey and her husband Dan, Courtney and Samantha Prestia; a great-grandson, Darren Healey; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will gather on Saturday November 12th at 9:30 a.m. at the Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home, 985 Main St., with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 823 Main St., both in Agawam. Rites of Committal will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, 1601 State St., Springfield. Jeff was born on July 28, 1943 in Ville Platte, LA and has been residing in Jasper, TX for the past 25 years and was locally known as "Mr. Shrimp". Dr. John F. LEFEBVRE On Friday, November 4, 2005, Dr. John F. Lefebvre died at the University of Washington Medical Center surrounded by his family. Dr. Lefebvre's death followed complications related to his recently diagnosed multiple myeloma. John was born in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada on December 26, 1933. He lived in Canada until completion of his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Ottawa. He completed his pediatric residency and a pediatric endocrinology fellowship at Children's Hospital and the University of Washington Medical Center. He later acted as a teaching professor at the UW and was an attending physician at Children's Hospital. One of John's passions was to help children suffering from chronic disease. Through his drive and determination, outreach clinics were established in Eastern Washington and Alaska for children with diseases of the endocrine system. John's affection for children also led him to design a camp outside of Anchorage for diabetic children. This project allowed children to attend summer camp without interrupting the management of their disease. These outreach programs were the most rewarding aspect of his professional career and he was working on these projects up until his death. John was well known for his larger-than-life personality and spirit, a bantering sense of humor, strong opinions and persistent stubbornness. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, and traveling. He appreciated good music, art and, as his friends and family knew, a good glass of wine. He particularly enjoyed gatherings of family and friends that included his wife's famous hors d' oeuvres, fine wine and lively conversation. John is survived by his beloved wife Randi, daughter Michelle Ahrens and her husband Ken, daughter Jackie LefebVre, son Tim Lefebvre and his wife Mary, son David Campbell and his wife Jill Hangen, and daughter Julie Davis and her husband Mike. John's life was blessed with five grandchildren and the knowledge that a sixth was on the way. Jack, Mary Elizabeth, Anna, Michael and Parker will miss their grandfather. John's family wishes to thank the staff of the University of Washington Medical Center for their extraordinarily compassionate care, support, and professionalism. Mr. Savoie served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church. Mr. Savoie owned and operated Romie's Mod Shop for 27 years. Surviving are wife, Reva; children, Gary Savoie of Flint, Timothy and wife Lenore of Naperville, Illinois, Karen and husband Robert Maniez of Fenton, Sharon and husband Andrew Hill of Grand Blanc; 9 grandchildren; 4 sisters; 2 brothers; many nieces and nephews. "T-Poke" Louviere Jr. and the late Dianne Blanchard; mother-in-law of Bill Wooddall, Shirley Louviere and the late Aubrey Sheets; grandmother of Pam Bordelon, Chad and Rodney Louviere, Derek Sheets, Robert Wooddall and Stacey LeBiche; and great-grandmother of Ken, Kelsie, Caid, Kyleigh, Rachael, Robert, Corey and Brandon. She also was preceded in death by three sisters, a brother, and her parents, Albert and Eva Schexnaydre.
